How to root Samsung Galaxy SII X - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hey guys,
I recently got the Samsung Galaxy S II X, originally with Telus, but now with Koodo. I wanted to know what your thoughts are on rooting the phone. I am new to this kind of thing and don't know the benefits or drawbacks. The main reason I want to root is so I can underclock my phone when battery is running low. I am currently only getting 15 hrs a day with moderate usage. If you think rooting is a good idea, do you have a link that has a step by step to do it.
Thanks in advance,
Aaron

You got absolutely nothing to lose rooting it ;-)

New Gnex (and thank you's)

Hey everybody
after 5 agonizing months (exactly) of pure iphone crappyness (my sensation was stolen on new years eve..) I am finally a proud Gnex owner
unlocked and rooted it the second I got home, took me maybe 10 minutes to go through the whole process, and so I want to thank you all and especially some particular members:
Jubakuba for giving good advice on unlocking, rooting and yakju'ing
efrant for writing the amazing how to guide to 'yakju'ing' basically everything
And The amazing mskip for his Gnex toolkit. amazing.
So, thank you all
That's amazing

Actually I was always an android user, from my days with the HD2, but when my sensation got stolen I had no choice but to use my dad's spare iphone 3gs, that thing is absolutely crap, I still can't understand how it got so popular..
But indeed.. I now see the light
I'm almost certain I'll be getting a nexus this weekend. I loved how easy it was to unlock and root the nexus s. Couple more days to wait...and think. I used to buy clamshells based solely on the screen and number of colours.
Is it as easy to unlock, root and clockwork the galaxy nexus as it was the nexus s?

Keep Nexus or return and get S3?

I know it's been asked a billion times, but I'm asking again. Hopefully I get some positive feedback. I have an unopened unlocked gnex sitting on my table that I ordered from Google and I don't know whether to keep it or return it and get an S3. I truly believe the S3 will have a pushed JB update from Samsung within a month here in the US. That said, once the S3 has JB, what's the perk to getting a Nexus? The biggest reasons I'm even considering the S3 over the Nexus is the bigger battery and the ability to add an sd card. The unlocked gsm version only has 16gb of memory. I take pics and like to watch movies on my phone. I'm coming from a 64gb iPhone 4S so I'm used to having whole seasons of shows plus a few movies plus tons of big apps without even having to pay attention to my storage at all. Will I have to worry about this with a 16gb Nexus? Did anyone else out there have the same problem and found it to be true or not true after using the phone? Basically those are my concerns. Battery and space. I know I'll always have the most up to date OS with the Nexus but it's like there's a new OS released every week. It's months and months in between updates. I'm not worried about my 10gb of music. I'll stream from the cloud or use Spotify. There again, it's just that measly 16gb of space with no way of making it bigger. Thanks for the advice in advance.
It seems as though you've already made up you're mind that you'd be more comfortable with the S3. I think the best way to put it is if you want a solid stock experience then keep the Nexus. If you don't care about stock and any major updates past Jelly Bean then go with the S3.

You seem to already know the pros and cons of each phone. You'll be in the best position to decide.
Having said that, I still think the GN is the better choice especially considering the price. I'd use the GN and wait for the next best thing to come out.
if youre worried about space.. get the s3. both are great phones. s3 should get jellyjean at some point, but to be honest its pretty fast on ics so it wouldnt really matter.
BlackBerry.
Just get the S3 if you need that much space, especially with videos.
Like they said, you seem to have made up your mind about this. And in your case, considering what you wrote, what you're looking for, I would also get the S3. As you said, the Nexus has only 16GB (although I think there's still a 32GB version) and the S3 has better battery life and camera (and the speakers in the Nexus are not too loud either).
Recently I was trying to decide between the two, so I asked in this forum and their advice really helped me decide (you can check my topic and read their opinions). And before I asked here, I was actually thinking I would chose the S3. Though my priorities weren't battery life or storage space, but software and support, so I chose the Nexus and I'm pretty happy with it. I love it. It's not the best hardware-wise, but I know that of the phones currently available, this is the best for me (and I'm waiting for the next Nexus).

Do you have a link for your thread?
You can root your GN then use external storage with sticky mount (apk)... There you will have all the space you can buy. 1T external?
I'm using 36G+16G (from my phone) with external storage and is more than what I need. So if you like the GN you have some options.
When you first line starts out with 'I know it has been asked a billion times' do you really need to make it a billion and one? Do you think you will get a special answer that the other billion people did not?
Oh look, what a surprise, it is the same exact answers that you will find in the other billion threads!

keep the nexus imho there's nothing like have a nexus.
in one year the GN will still get updates and the S3 probably not.

Doubtful. The S2 is testing JB right now and is said to get the update to JB so long as everything goes well. If the S2 is still getting updates, that tells me that in a year the S3 will still get updates.

New Verizon nexus. What ROM is best?

I had a nexus about a month ago and sold it because I bought the galaxy s3.
Then I saw Ubuntu was coming.
So when I saw a nexus on craiigslist for 100$ I went for it.
So now I want to which ROM is best on battery life but does not sacrifice speed.
I could spend all day flashing different ROMs but that's what the s3 is for haha
Please let me know the title of ROM or kernel. And if it isn't to much to ask for... A link to the thread. I'd greatly appreciate it

Last days with my Galaxy Nexus

I'm going to miss everyone here, the ROMs, the kernels and the pureness!
Getting my Xperia Z in a few days, felt it was time for a change and the nexus models(4) I don't think seems good enough to be the next nexus device. I hope I can eventually find a combo on the Z as good as Xenon and trinity on the gnex!
Peace out

I know what you mean, there are two things I want in my next phone: bigger screen and bigger battery. The N4 is a definite pass for me.
Are you planning on selling the gnex? Or keeping it as a backup? Or installing Ubuntu?
I'm going to be moving on to a new device myself in the next couple months, been trying to decide what to do with this one.

Every time I get a new phone the old one goes to my dad (who I have got hooked to flashing) and then his goes to my wee bro.

Xperia Z looks like a great phone, I would def pass on the N4 since its not much of an improvement.
I have my eyes set on the new HTC one that was revealed today thou, either that or the next Note depending on how the UbuntuOs feels
My friend just got the note 2...loves it. For now though not super easy to root.
Kuddos.. I would love getting my self Xperia Z. Perfect phone!

Yessir I am, and you read my mind. I've been wanting that N2 bad, but I keep talking myself out of buying it now since I can get an upgrade in Sep. I have been keeping an eye on Craigslist though. I'm hoping by then I can get the N3, fingers crossed for 6" 1080 and a gargantuan battery.

Nice.:good: The circle of Android life. lol
All my family just got that new Apple so I guess I'm gonna keep my gnex, I don't think i can bring myself to sell it.
And before anybody scoffs at me.. There was no way I was gonna be tech support for my parents and siblings for the next couple years, they just have to be happy with their walled garden.
Do you feel you are going to miss the quick updates?

Not really, I have never received an ota, I've been flashing since the nexus s first came out, I'll get a new phone at the end of this year so hopefully there is another decent nexus by then. The only I'm anxious about is ROMs getting the bravia engine working and stuff like that.

[Q] New Galaxy S2 questions

Can anyone help me out here?
I am looking at getting a Galaxy S2 for my little bro with T-mobile. He is not really big on apps and doesn't care much about Specs really. Just something that has reasonably good call quality, he can text on and download apps on when needed.
It is either this Galaxy S2(which is like 2 years old) or the new Galaxy S Light that is a midrange T-mobile phone that just came out.
IS this still a good buy? It's currently going for free on T-mobile so i was just curious.
Are there any glaring issues with the Galaxy S2?
