Boot Manager Discussion - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

I was hoping to get some discussion started about Boot Manager. One thing I would like to know is what roms have others successfully installed to a slot. I would also like to hear any tips or tricks. I have found this app to be frustrating, love the idea of it though. So lets get this going and help each other out, sure I'm not the only one that likes the idea of this app but have been frustrated with it at times. Thanks

Boot Manager always asks if I want to install a slot as ext2 or ext4 but it seems I'm currently running ext3. Now what?

I use ext2 usually works better also select use large boot image almost all aosp roms work fine sense roms seem more picky with bm but most work fine.

Which sense roms have you had work in a slot. I have tried Mikrunny, Skyraider Zeus and TSM Vanilla. They all work as a phone rom, have gotten them all to successfully install to a slot but none will boot.

I used to use skyraider in a slot but had it as phone rom an made a backup of it an restored the backup to a rom slot an it worked fine.I run magnolia from a slot without any problems.

Thanks RRF12, using ext 2 as you suggested I was finally able to get Skyraider Zeus and MikRunny to install and boot from a slot. Starting to like this app now. I never gave the custom sense roms much of a chance, that is why I wanted to use this app, thought I would keep them on the phone longer and play with them more.

I have tried several times to flash Areoevans new ICS kernel using boot manager and it is not working, any ideas.
Edit: Figured it out, must be you can't flash a new kernel to the slot you are currently using. I booted into a different slot and then successfully flashed the new kernel to the slot with ICS rom.

Woot! I finally got a ROM to boot in a slot. Checking large boot image did it.

Something else I have noticed that seems to work is to flash roms, kernels and other zip files to the slot roms when you're booted into the phone rom not another slot rom.

anyone using SD booster? What settings do you use?
How about MIUI roms? I can't get them to get DATA working if they are in a slot, but if I flash them in the phone rom, I get data working?

This app will let you dual boot your phone, correct? Was thinking of installing it so I can test different ROM's and not always have to re-install is I don't like a new ROM.

It gives you four ROM slots in addition to your main (phone) ROM. Pretty slick when it works. I couldn't get MikRunny to work in a slot. Each loaded slot takes 2GB of space on the SDCard.

This works great for almost all AOSP ROMs but haven't had any luck with sense ROMS at all.... which sucks because flashing a phone rom isn't really using boot manager its using your phone. Being able to boot a sense from from one of the slots is what matters and nothing appears to boot that has sense. I am able to use Aeroevans ICS roms flawlessly though.

I have yet to get a rom to work with this app... When I try to install a zip(rom) all I get is a message that there is an error building the boot.image.
I get this on all the roms I have tried. I have large boot image checked...
If I could sell this app to someone, I would ... Waste of money if you asked me.

I was having lots of issues, but finally found success.
Make sure large boot image is checked, which looks like you have
disable logging in super-user app under preferences
Check keep screen on during install
use ext 2 for sense roms.
I have succeded when flashing a rom to the phone rom, making a nandroid and then restoring said nandroid to a slot.
If you can get the logs emailed to init2winit, they have always been pretty quick with help.
I have sucessfully booted Coredroid, Condemned sense, condemned cm 7.2, MIUI 4.0 (old miui works without data in a slot), couple ICS roms, Vivow milestone 3 & TSM Bullet.

Thanks for the input.
I did finally get CM7 to install into slot one... So I booted into it. Then when I tried to download Boot Manager to CM7 from the market, I kept getting error messages from the market and was unable to download Boot Manager (or any other app) so I ended up going to recovery and flashed back to my Backup of CM9... I think I'm going to give up on this app for a while again

You don't have to flash back with boot manager if you have your phone rom setup just boot into recovery an install your zip of phone rom will be under boot manager.I use bm all the time most everything works except a lot of sense rooms which I don't use anyway.

[Q] Having major problems on Sense roms, help!

I haven't found any solution with this. About 3 or 4 weeks ago my Evo went crazy so I rebooted and was missing many apps. I did a nand to another sense rom and every time I tried to install an app (either download or from sd card) it would reboot. The odd thing is, it only does it with sense roms. I can use CM 6 or 7 fine and install whatever I want. I was originally one Myn's rls5, I also tried the Fresh roms. I have non clue what's causing this, tried googling and all said clear the market cache or try an older market, which I've done both. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
tricky one. have you tried flashing a stock sense rom, and seeing how things work for you there?
Don't use a backup. Flash a sense ROM and install everything manually.

I haven't tried a stock rom yet, once I get things back up I'll find one and try it.

I can't install anything. period. as soon as I try to install any apk from my sd card or anything from the market that doesn't come installed in the rom, as soon as it "finishes" the installation part it will reboot, but not a full reboot, it will go out to the boot screen (but not all the way to the htc screen).
Since going from AOSP to Sense what was your procedure for flashing? Just want to make sure your starting with a clean slate.
- What steps to you take?
- Full wipe? Data, cache, sd-ext?
- SD format?
The more info you can give the better and maybe we can help you track it down.
Ive done the standard full wipe, data, cache, dalvik. I do that everytime between roms. Not sure what the ext does and in haven't formatted my sd card since then

Update - I flashed the stock rooted 3.70 and was able to install. This was after formatting my sd card. Then tried to flash Myn's rls5 again and had the same problems as before. Only difference is with the 3.70 I forgot the flash the radios, but still had a fine signal. I flashed the radio updates with Myn's. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.
At this point all I can think of doing is unrooting your device and getting it completely back to stock, then try re-rooting and make a nandroid of your rooted, stock sense rom.
Maybe you can root through a different methods than what you did originally.
After that, try another sense rom, make sure the md5 checks out too.

What recovery are you using and what version? I thought there were known issues with ClockWork 3.x.x.x version of recovery not wiping cache correctly? If you are using ClockWork you might want to try switching to Amon_RA 2.2.1. to see what happens. There is also a zip floating around (which I have attached) that can be used to wipe everything, you may want to give that a shot then reinstall the ROM. I have not used this zip, so use it at your own risk as I cannot guarantee the results. I have read about others using this and it working just fine.

[Q] Boot Manager app Discussion

This is a thread where people can discuss what is working and not working for them for the boot manager app. I will begin by asking if anyone else is having problems using bootmanager with the magnolia ROM. My next question would be is anyone else having a problem not being able to turn on wifi for miui if its put as an sdROM? The only roms that really seem to be fully functional are CM7 and OMFG. What ROM are most people using for the phone ROM, and what roms do you have working fully as sd card roms?
I haven't had much luck with the Boot Manager so far... I can make the backup of my current rom (Miui) and try and install the zips of other downloaded roms and get almost all the way finished and then I will get an error message.. So I have given up and thought I'd wait for an update and see if that may help.
Got Miui Working fine.
After some work and reinstallation I was able to get miui working on the sdcard ROM, for boot manager. I will keep this updated if I notice any more fixes.
A quixk suggestion would be to clear them and reinstall boot manager and restart your phone, after doing that and reinstalling the ROMS on ext2 I noticed they worked/ installed, when they wouldn't before.
After getting the hang of it I have been able to flash any ROM, kernel, nightly or whatever. It's awesome, I think.
I do everything to the phone rom slot through regular clockwork recovery, as if the app didn't exist. Then from the phone rom I flash everything else to the other slots. I always go back and boot into the phone rom before I flash anything to the other slots. Not sure if that's right but it has worked for me.
It would be cool if you could restore an existing nandroid you had into one of the slots but I don't think they are formatted the same. Not sure.
Can someone explain the method of how to perform the setup?
To setup, run the "setup phone rom", which only takes a few seconds. What this does is make a copy of your boot file in case you screw something up. Once this is done, you can install up to 4 different ROM's on your SD card and then boot into them from this same program.
If something gets screwed up along the way and you cannot boot your phone, boot into CWR, install a zip from a file, and find the update.zip in the bootmanager/phonerom(or whatever ROM folder you want to boot) folder.
Currently I am running MIUI, TSM pool party, TSM gangbang, Skyraider Zues, and newt's 3.0 port.

[GUIDE] How To Have 2 (Up To 5) Roms On Your Phone And Dual Boot Them

How to Dual Boot Multiple ROMs on Your Android Phone
Whether you want to test out a new ROM for daily use or just keep an eye on one that's being developed, you can run multiple ROMs on your rooted Android phone with BootManager, and pick which one to use when you start it up.
Having multiple ROMs to choose from is great, but flashing and re-flashing new ROMs just to try them out is annoying. If you want to try one out but don't want to fully flash it over your current ROM, BootManager will let you flash it (and up to three others) to your SD card, so you can try multiple ROMs at once. The ROMs you run from your SD card won't be quite as fast, and not every ROM out there will work, but it should give you a chance to try out most other ROMs without fully flashing them.
Right now the app is officially supported on the original Motorola Droid, Droid Incredible, HTC Thunderbolt, HTC Vision, HTC EVO 4G, HTC Inspire 4G, HTC Desire, and the HTC Desire HD. It may work on other phones, though, they just aren't officially supported yet.
Note: This tutorial contains some pretty advanced stuff, and i don't recommend it if you're unfamiliar with rooting and flashing ROMs. If you're just starting out, check out how to root your Android phone and how to flash Android ROMs before moving onto something like this.
Step One: Flash a Second ROM
Before you do anything, make a nandroid backup of your current ROM with ROM Manager or through your recovery module. If anything goes wrong, you can always restore from this backup to get things back to the way they were.
To set up BootManager, just download and install it from the Market, and start it up. You'll also want to grab a ROM of your choice and save the zip file on your SD card.
When you first start up BootManager, it'll prompt you to back up your boot.img, which you should do before installing any ROMs. Once you've done that, head to "Install ROMs". Pick the zip file from your SD card containing the ROM you want to flash, and check all three boxes: Wipe System, Wipe Data, and Wipe Cache. Let it do its thing (which will take awhile). When you're done, it will give you the option of booting into your new ROM. Hit Done; we aren't ready to boot into it just yet.
Step Two: Install Google Apps and Other ROM Add-Ons
Most ROMs don't come with Google's copyrighted apps, like Gmail, the Market, and others. This is a problem, since when you boot into your new ROM you need BootManager to function if you ever want to boot out of it, and it won't work unless you're signed into the Android Market. Luckily, there's an easy fix (note: if you know your ROM comes with Google Apps installed, you can skip this step).
Download the Google Apps zip file for the ROM you just installed and go back to BootManager. Hit Install ROMs. This time, pick Google Apps' zip file, and use the same slot that you used in step one. Leave all three "wipe" boxes unchecked this time. When it's done, booting into that slot will take you to the original ROM, but with the Google apps installed.
If you want to install a theme or other zip-based mod in the future, you can do that using this method too. Just remember: if you're flashing a new ROM, check all three "wipe" boxes, but if you're just installing an add-on to a ROM, don't check any of them.
Step Three: Switch Between ROMs
To boot into one of your other ROMs, just head into BootManager and choose "Boot Installed ROM". It'll show you a list of ROMs you have installed on your device, and after choosing one of them it will reboot into that ROM. BootManager will come installed on each of your other ROMs as well, and as long as you're signed into the Android Market on that ROM, you can boot into it from there as well and switch back to your main ROM.
That's it! You can flash up to five ROMs at a time, so you'll never be bored by one measly operating system. Hit the link to download BootManager.
BootManager is a $2.99 download for Android 2.1 and up. See the Market page below for officially supported devices.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.drx2.bootmanager&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5kcngyLmJvb3RtYW5hZ2VyIl0. (Theres a lite and pro version )

I had to go by the bootloaderand after by the recovery for restored my phone
But Thanks a lot It's a very good idee to make a tuto
Does anyone have any ICS roms working with this?
i highly doubt most ROMs would work with this, especially ICS roms... it's just too good to be true, and the app needs a lot of refinement.
Yeah I downloaded the light version and the only ROM I could get working was the JoyOS port. I tried Andromadus Mimicry, MIUIv4, G2Slim, and some others I don't remember and they didn't work.

I've used this app off-and-on for months. Couple things to note. It won't work on G2/DZ unless you set the large boot setting. Also, some ROMs just don't seem to like it. Most ROMs can be made to work by installing normally, doing a nandroid then installing the nandroid to the boot manager pseudo-partition. Even that way, I've had some ROMs that wouldn't boot.
I definitely used it for ICS (Andromadus and CM9/unnoffical, I think) before I committed to DD with ICS.

Hey Guys Thank You For Taking A Look At My Thread.Lets Cut To The Chase.I Have A HUGE PROBLEM with my Replacement Incredible 2.I Rooted my phone with Tacoroot, and everything was fine.Flashed Condemed CM7.2 and started realizing i didn't like it as much,so i made a BACKUP just in case i wanted to return to the CM goodness.Went to TSMTrinity's Sense 2.1 Version 4.5 S,and here's where the problem started happening. Also,i use Revolutionary's Backup,or I think its called Nandroid,to do backups and restores, and ROM MANAGER to edit their names and delete them. Also,an added side to his problem, when i boot to the Hboot screen, when it loads, for a few of the items it says, missing or wrong image.could that be the problem?? What OP wrote applies to me as well. I am looking for something better than aerovan's CM9 (which has been my DD), and thought I would give Viper a try. Without fail, bootlooping (which I could have guessed since I did tacoroot and this seems to be an issue with sense based roms).
That said, I tried steps 1 through 4 and the bootlooping stopped in Viper - it goes through startup and just shuts down before leaving the boot screen. One strange thing that I noticed is that the ICS Firmware/radio with Viper (which I loaded in CWM), wouldn't load in 4ext. Maybe I'll give paranoid a go if I can't resolve this bootlooping issue in Viper! I hope OP has better luck.

I'm not as knowledgeable as Chilly, but a thought did occur to me. if the cm9 rom included a kernel on the flash and then you went to a sense based rom that didn't include a kernel that could cause a problem. I believe that I read that cm using a kernel that is asop based while sense roms use a different based kernel. You may check to see what kernel you have and then check for the recomended kernel for that rom and flash that kernel. don't forget to wipe.

All of the roms come with a kernel for our phone, but certainly, don't flash a sense kernel with aosp or vice versa after rom flash. Chilly is right. Flashing a newer radio should fix the problem and the radio is flashed with a PG32IMG.zip in the bootloader, not in the recovery.

Good call. When chilly said you don't flash kernels in recovery I hit my head. I flashed the radio, but now my challenge is getting back into recovery since I renamed the file and bootloader always finds it and wants to reboot or I load CM9 which stays on flash screen. I'll figure something out, maybe with adb. Thanks.
Power down, pop the sd out, boot to recovery, rename file, profit.

i made a stupid mistake of flashing radio in recovery, in fact the radio is for Samsung at&t and now my phone vibrates it doesnt show htc quietly brilliant, only vibrates and orange light with black screen untill i pull out the battery... i was able to return to stuck and it can only boot if its connected to power, it doesn't read sd card while android is booted and in recovery to, only in bootloader it reads sd... error in mounting if i try to... i flashed RUU.exe 2.3.3 and 2 other RUUs for my droid inc 2 but it keeps vibrating... please help me!!! thanks
I made the same mistake when i first gained s-off for my dinc2. the thing with the venom rom tho is if you ever want to go back to aosp ull need to gets chill's anti-venom zip and flash it through recovery because doing a normal wipe wont do the trick. also a helpful trick that worked for me with roms if i ever start getting boot loops i go into recovery from the bootloader menu and i wipe the dalvik cache under advanced and then wipe the chache under mounts and storage and it always works like a charm for me. but ive also learned that you have to be careful which kernel you flash with the rom of your choice because not only will it cause lags if you happen to get past the boot animation to the main screen but in some cases it can cause breaks in your framework like your wifi data etc. im not an expert tho those are just suggestions that im familiar with because theyve already happened to me before. hope this helps in any way.

AOSP roms will NOT run! Driving me crazy...

So, first off, just wanna say that I have a RIDICULOUS amount of experience with flashing roms. Literally over 100 different devices and 1000s of different flashes of my own devices on top of it. Quite familiar with this S2 as well and have customized them to all sorts of extents, but this one has me baffled. This phone refuses to run 4.2.2/4.3/4.4.x roms. Using the most up to date radio and the suggested TWRP (2.6.1.0) as well as CWM 6.0.44 and the newer TWRP: 2.6.3.0. Every time the phone will get to the set up screen, refreeze and boot. No issues running stock or stock based 4.1.2 roms. I've tried changing recoveries, wiping everything (/system, /data, /caches) repeatedly, Odin back to stock and redoing everything, switching kernels, wiping caches before rebooting and leaving it be, changing batteries, etc but nothing has worked. So far I've tried BlackLiquid 2.92 (4.2.2 stable), Awesome Audio rom (4.3), official CM11 (whatever the last build up was last night), and BeanStalk 4.4.2 (12/16) and all behave exactly the same - freeze on start up and reboot. This doesn't seem to be much of a widespread issue obviously, so just baffled and getting a bit frustrated as this should have been a 20 minute process that has turned into a few hours already. Since USB Debugging isn't on by default on newer roms, how would I even do a logcat to see if there is anything meaningful there? Any ideas?
Update: I have another S2. Performed same steps, same TWRP, same radio and rom, on same external SD card and that one booted right up like normal confirming that it is the phone itself, but what causes that?? Corrupted partitions?
I have the same problem, just format your internal and external sd card with just ROM file on your storage then try to install, than please inform me

Nope. No luck there (only tried Beanstalk so far, but exact same issue). Thanks for the suggestion though! Only using internal storage, no SD card, though thinking I might try that next...
Edit: Just to be thorough, I formatted internal storage via TWRP and my computer then readded the files and just tried to boot rom only and freezes before I can do anything.
Do you by chance have a refurbished s2?
The screen has been replaced by a friend of mine and he managed to mess up the soft keys with it, but everything else functions. That's actually why he sent it to me, so I could hook him up with Pie and all that kind of thing so the soft keys aren't an issue. What's your thoughts on the refurb side of it?

ok lets stat it with this
1) download both the scripts of infamous wipe cache and infamous super wipe.
2) format your both SD card with PC (FAT32)
2) put both these wipe files and and your rom file ( i prefer try slimbean rom first)
3) Now in twrp 2.6.0.0- follow the steps
i) format your phone with twrp options
ii) again format your phone with infamous super file. (by going in to INSTALL ZIP file option in TWRP)
iii) than format with infamouse cache file (by going in to INSTALL ZIP file option in TWRP)
iv) install your rom and compatiable GAPPS zip file.
v) after installing or somewhere between procedure if twrp says something about supersu birnaries are not correct than click on DO . NOT FIX
vi) again format infamouse cache wipe.
vii) now FINALLY reboot the rom.
it should work, and it worked for me. if u sucessfully run the rom than you can eailsy run all the AOSP roms in this forum. Again If you try this please do tell me what happend.
Followed to a "T" and still in the same boat - freezes after bootup. I used those same steps before with another darkside wipe script (maybe older?) but yea, have already been down that road. I did downgrade to 2.6.0.0 and used Slim 4.3 because 4.4 is supposed to use the newer TWRP, just to be certain, but GRRR. I guess we're just gonna have to settle for a 4.1.2 rom and call it a day. :/
So here are the log output from the wipes:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9903887/INFAMOUS.SUPER.WIPE_recovery.log
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9903887/INFAMOUS.CACHE.WIPE_recovery.log
I see some stuff at the bottom of those that might indicate something weird, but I am not adept at interpreting these, so just wondering if someone could point me to the right direction about the repair checks and what not listed on these. Thanks!
Edit 2: I did get a AOSP based 4.1.2 rom to boot with no problems! wtf... LoL
Last Edit:
Problem solved! I used basically the same steps I had been doing but once the AOSP 4.1.2 rom booted then now everything works like it should again. Have loaded a 4.3 and 4.4 rom successfully. Thanks for the help!

Interesting, so you're saying it's phone specific?
That begs to ask other questions now:
1. Where did this phone come from? is it a Tmobile version (SGH-T989) or AT&T (i-1900)?
2. You mentioned you got it from a friend; did it come rooted? unlocked? Or did you have to do that process yourself?

Yep, very much phone specific. Used same recovery, same rom zip and gapps off the same external SD card, to be certain. That one updated just like every other S2 I've done. And it's the Tmo version. The At&t models are i777 S2 or i727 S2 Skyrocket. The i9100 is international and has a physical home button. But the phone was not modified at all. No root, custom recovery, etc. I was only able to resolve it by first starting with an AOSP 4.1.2 rom and working my way up to 4.4. One of the weirder issues I've come across.

What did you exactly do? I flashed a 4.1.2 and then flashed a 4.3 based ROM and it didn't work. What recovery version did you use to flash the 4.3 ROM?

Sorry, I don't pay attention to the notifications on XDA very often. I don't usually browse the S2 forums unless needed because I have an N5, but anyway... The 4.1.2 rom you used, was it TW or AOSP type? I used 2.6.0 to wipe everything, then used cache and superwipe zips then 4.1.2 AOSP type rom then cache wipe zip again then after that booted, I was able to go back to 2.6.1 and flash a 4.3 via wiping, wipe zips, installing rom then cache wipe again. After that, repeated with a KK rom and now it loads roms just like it should. If you want more precise help, feel free to hit me up on Hangouts with my username: es0tericcha0s. Good luck! I know how frustrating it can be when it gets a little out of whack like this...
I'm in the same boat
Same here. I just bought a galaxy s2 from my friend (tmobile version) and I too get stuck in a bootloop no matter what rom I use. It boots up freezes then reboots 7 keeps doing that endelessly. I've even wiped using twrp & darkside then reflashed the stock rom in odin, but no luck. strangely it only happens on the cellular network, otherwise it works fine on wifi. But when I turn off the wifi and go to the cellular network I can't even turn on the wifi anymore and still stuck in this boot loop It's wierd and frustrating.

Hmm. That's interesting... This is happening on the stock rom - where you turn on cellular data and it reboots? Definitely a different issue than the one I was having. Which stock rom were you flashing via Odin? Have you tried other versions of the stock rom and had the same problem?
TMO 4.1.2

This was happening on any rom I used (Cm 10.2 stable, Cm 11 nightly, AOKP & Super Nexus 3.0 which is Android 4.3) I can't really speak for the stock rom (tmo 4.1.2) since I've never used it for more that 5 minutes, sigh but I'll try it and see if it gives me the same problem :/
Are you guys flashing gapps if the ROM you're installing doesn't have it?

I just started working on a VZW S3 on T-Mobile service that has this issue. Happens on stock VZW 4.1.2, stock T-Mobile 4.1.2 rom, custom 4.1.2 T-Mobile rom, and stable CM 10.2. Weirdest thing... full wipes including /system inbetween each flash. Changed the modem too. Nothing helps. Pretty sure it's a bad board at this stage.
Cool beans, 0! Having this exact problem, will try your method for my s2, btw which aosp 4.1.2 did u use? Can I get a link? Thanks been having the problem for a few months now and just gave up haha, been super thirsty for that beanstalk kk build
One last thing can u also provide a link to the 4.3 that u used? I really want it to work and want to follow what u did to the , megabyte
