Albumthumbs

I have to ask a potentially stupid question but what is the albumthumbs folder for in my android/data folder. It is huge in size and if I don't need it id rather get rid of it. Next to the folder that had my mp3s in it and my domain backup it is the largest file on my sdcard at over 600mb!

May be a setting in music player to choose whether to cache and/or collect album art thumbnails. Same story on Pandora or other similar streaming player.

I've tried nearly all top music apps and they all do the same and none of them have options for a disable toggle. I'm curious to figure this out too. my only alternative is to permanently disable media scanner but the downside is to reenable it if you've added new photos,audio or video

idk, short of changing the permissions for the folder so nothing can write to it, after deleting the existing, and that's a guess, may not work.

it's clearly a missing or dysfunctional option since I noticed poweramp,tunewiki and winamp all do it.tried getting responses from the devs on those apps but no response as well as no info on the web

Are the files in the album art folder hidden? I only have Astro at my disposal right now as I'm at work, but I show nothing in there. One thing to note, ALL my MP3s have their album art embedded in the ID3 tag, so it has no need to cache anything.. maybe that's key?

they aren't hidden since I have astro to show everything.most files in here are 3.97mb each and when you got 10GB of music.that's a lot of cache that's wasting space and embedding over 1700 songs would take to long

I see. Something you might look into if you have a Windows machine available is the free program MediaMonkey, which will automatically tag entire directories of files with album art (among other tags, if you wish) from the internet. It's not perfect, but it beats the hell out of doing it manually.
Please note this is operating on the assumption that I'm right about why my folder is empty. One could prove that one way or the other by clearing that cache directory and moving all music off the SD card and then put a couple of ID3 tagged files on and see if their cache remained empty. I would think the time invested in such an endeavor would be minimal compared to the gain in disk space if my theory is correct.

maybe I'll experiment with a few songs once I transfer songs where they can't be detected and go from there

I just had a thought that using a ".nomedia" file might be constructive in this case so you don't actually need to remove your current library.

what should I try doing with it? adding it to where the cache is stored?

A .nomdedia file tells the Android Media Service to disregard the directory it resides in when scanning for media, so I was thinking you could drop it into your music folder and then make a new music folder ("Temp" or "Music2" or whatever) and put the tagged songs in there.

The problem is not the folder itself, album art should be tiny pictures, so on a 10G card, max 4k songs, it should be less than 20Mb. I'm having the same problem, my sd card is getting filled with a single mp3 file being repeatedly copied to the albumthumbs folder. That's a bug, and a pretty serious one. Has anyone else experienced the same issue?

having trouble with adding songs from my library to offline , i click on some songs and it doesnt have a option to add to offline library.
Also where are all the offline songs stored, what if I want to delete my stored songs , how do i do that?

Through the google music app. Select the song or album you want, long press-add instant mix. Then go to the instant mix-menu-make available offline.

Sdcard/Android/data/com.google.Android.music/cache/music
I have been trying to figure a way to make use of this because it would be nice if there were other music apps that could take advantage of these songs but have had no luck.

PowerAmp lets you select which folders to scan for music, so selecting the cache folder for Google Music makes those songs available to PowerAmp. And PowerAmp really is one of the best music apps available. I wish Google would release APIs making our cloud-stored music available to any app that uses them.

mp3 ringtones

hi there, how can i use my own mp3 ringtones and messages alerts?

Transfer them to notifications or ringtones folder on the phone. Then go into Settings > Sound and change the options under Ringtones and Notifications. If you want to use specific sections of an mp3, use Audacity to do so.

thanks but that works in a limit possibility. i want to use in other programs like mail, k9, facebook, etc and i cant get to use the mp3 choosing in other apps

Is there a way to simply change the incoming calls ringtone to an mp3 file that is in my music folder or download folder? I can't believe I have to hook up to my PC and copy a file to the ringtones folder. The stock music player does not see to have an option to set the current song as a ringtone. Didn't this use to work in Gingerbread?

It works fine all apps are able to see the ringtones, notifications, and alarms folder on the root of the sdcard.

You can install ES File Explorer and if you want to change ringtone, you will have to choose between options: Android System and ES File Explorer. Also it's possible to set ringtone directly from app.

But I do not want to install any additional apps or hook up to a PC and copy a file to the ringtones folder. I have had several phones where all I had to do was locate the song and make it my ringtone. Did we lose this function? Why?

Use a file explorer and move ur content to the ringtones folder its that simple you might have to reboot tho

Apparently you do not understand. I am perfectly capable of copying a file. I simply do not want to have to take those extra steps. This used to be a simple process. You just either found a song in your player and chose an option to make it a ringtone or chose it as a ringtone for a specific contact. Now, your only choices are what is in the ringtones folder. Meanwhile, the music player can see it just fine in either the music folder or the downloads folder. This is a step backwards.

It is the stock player "Play Music".

Or you could try "tone picker" available from the store.

There is supposed to be a ringtone editor in JB, but not in mine. And I just got a Play Music app update yesterday and it is still missing.

Well what do you know..... they took it out of the list of JB features on the official site.

Lots of people ask me the same things about "simply" adding an MP3 to the ringtones list... But, since Google Play Music arrives, the option disappear. It's good to know the AOSP Music App (really ugly application) has the option to use a Music as a ringtones, but when you install Google Play Music, this app disappear, so as the option you are searching.
In order to help you, I advice you to use a File Explorer Application (Solid Explorer for me) to copy/paste the MP3 on the ringtones folder, it's simple, and I think a file explorer app is a must have on the android world

I already have a file manager app. I was merely pointing out that the JB feature was removed.

Add music from iTunes and organize into playlists

can somebody explain a way to do this? take out the m3u file from an itunes playlist so that my music on my galaxy nexus is organized..

Have you checked into DoubleTwist? I think that does what you're looking for.
Can you explain the problem a bit more? I just copy over my music and the Music app sorts it by artist, album, etc for me. (Actually it pulls it all from Google Music... uploaded all my music as soon as Google Music came out.)

DoubleTwist will pull in your playlists from iTunes and sync them with your phone. You'll need to use the DoubleTwist player on your phone too, though.

Google Music supports playlists from iTunes and WMP.

I recommend this also. I was using iOs for years and had setup smart playlists based on ratings. iSyncr and its widget work well to keep that going.

Ditto on Google Music. The music manager automatically uploads your music (even adjusted music - album covers, renames, etc) as well as any playlists you make in itunes. That's the way I do it. Requires no effort at all.

this requires data if streaming and i dont think the music quality would be the same when uploading to google music and then downloading it back to the phone
theres no way of just taking a playlist from itunes and uploading it to your phone then taking the m3u file and just adding it to the same folder?

no, iTunes sync is DRM encrypted so you cant do it directly from what I understand.
You can try finding a PC based app but iSyncr is cheap and works great. It has a PC only app.
You could import your library to Winamp or other player and directly sync also.
Maybe you can fool iTunes into thinking your phone is a data disc and import music that way but that sounds like a lot of work.

I run into this... 90% of my library transferred to Google Music okay, the other 10% (especially my Lonely Island albums) is DRM protected and short of burning them to a CD I have yet to find something that will remove it on them. Doubletwist doesn't even see them (I put them all into a playlist by themselves)... More reasons to hate Apple (but applaud their ability to monopolize and make money)...
Needless to say, I haven't bought anything from iTunes since summer so I can avoid this...

As some others in this thread have already stated, the iSyncr app available in the Android Market can do what you want. It allows you to see all the playlists you currently have in iTunes and select which ones you want to import onto your Android-based phone. After you've selected which playlists you want it will sync them (and the relevant song files) to your phone. After that your music app of choice on your phone should be able to see the playlists.
I use an iMac at home with iTunes and have a GSM Galaxy Nexus and use the above scenario all the time to sync my playlists from iTunes to my GNex.

I use Google Music but if you want to sync your iTunes library or playlists, double twist is definitely the way to go. And it DOES play fine with the default Music app, it just mirrors your iTunes music folder to your phones music folder, which the stock Music app scans.

Sync with Google Music over Wifi, no data required when playing offline music.
Google Music doesn't do any transcoding if your music is in MP3 format. If it's in other formats it will do transcoding.
The Android Music player supports .m3u playlists, so you can export your playlists from iTunes in .m3u format, then copy the playlist to your phone in the same folder hierarchy, and the media scanner will then read the playlist.

Nevermind i found a way, isyncr wasnt working out for me on my mac (playlists werent showing up, music was getting deleted.. etc..) so i got this app from the mac app store called Playlist Export and it works great. Heres the link http://www.ericdaugherty.com/apps/playlistexport/

^ I think the app is free, so not AS bad. But this whole MTP thing is rough for Mac owners. I've been trying for a while to figure out a free way to get my girlfriend's playlists from her macbook to her GNexus.
I'm going to give that app a shot later today, but if anyone has any other good ideas (other than the wifi add-ons for iSyncr and DoubleTwist), let me know. I'd appreciate it.

actually, itunes supports m3u now.. just click file > library > export playlist, then choose m3u and add that too your music folder on phone with the music in it !!!!!

^ I was pretty happy to discover that earlier, and exported all the .m3u playlists to her phone via dropbox. I had all of the mp3 songs loaded for each playlist that I was going to transfer over, but when I opened the .m3u files, it gives me an error message saying "Error playing the requested track." I'm guessing the issue is that the .m3u file isn't in the same folder as the rest of the music files. If I used a file manager app and moved the .m3u into the music file, would that help?
Also, I have tried using doubletwist with airsync, which works for transferring songs, but doesn't give me playlists on her phone. I've tried dragging and dropping the playlists onto her phone, and I've tried letting doubletwist sync them completely.
I'm pretty much out of ideas at this point. If anyone has worked out any sort of solution with a Mac, please let me know!

I don't understand why. I've put other songs in there that have worked just fine, but I've added the new QOTSA songs on my phone and they won't show up in the Sense Music app. Not sure what the problem is.

Just use any media scanning app from the playstore https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.clypher.mediascanner&hl=en
or use the media scanning feature in "Trickster MOD" if you have root access..

Happened to me a couple of days ago. Noticed that the music not showing in the library was copied over the Wi-Fi and not using USB cable. Deleted the files and copied them with USB and voalla .hope that helps.
