[Q] Scared to root. Justified? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

My GSII is running stock 2.3.6. I lost root after the update , so the old root method wont work. I want root but I HATE! HATE! HATE! ODIN. (can't even count how many times iv'e bricked my vibrant and GS4G.) I know what i'm doing ive been rooting since my cliq! I have never had any issues with htc devices. (I think rooting and such is easy as long as you read instructions, ask questions if your not sure, and NEVER do anything that can't be found under your device on xda. )
Reading around XDA Iv'e seen threads where people say clockwork doesn't work right or normal reboots caused hard brick. and it's freaking me out! I don't event want to risk soft brick. Should i just get it over with and root now or wait for development to pick up and get the bugs worked out?.....Because I don't know what i would do if i lost my (second) favorite device of all time.

Root using odin. Takes 2 seconds. I never had a samsung before or used odin before, so I went to android monsters in austin and had my buddy do it. But, the info in the sticky is what he used and it worked great.

I forgot how I did it but is easier than rooting and unlocking the bootloader on a Nexus One that's for sure.

its easier than newer htc phones. just use a the updated superuser apk wit root

Maybe it's just me, but how can you dislike a simple program so much that you refuse to use it to root a phone? From my own experience, it's quick, easy and painless. It's as simple as flashing ClockworkMod Recovery and Superuser with Odin. I've yet to have any issues with Odin and even if you did mess something up, you have all the resources here to get back up and going again with stock - that's what backups are for. There is no reason not to root your phone if you're at least somewhat tech savvy and have a reason to do so.

I think ODIN would be the best tool in the android world if it were more stable. For example something as simple as flashing back to stock on a custom rom-ed vibrant took me 3 tries with all the right files and I know its not my computer, used mine then a friends. I think I have a phobia of the phone to computer screen or yellow triangle lol

But my main question is, Are the dangers worth the benefits with this phone? Im just scared because I got it for Christmas and Im in high school. If i brick Im pretty much S.O.L, I could never afford one and don't wanna go back to an HD2 haha
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

I couldn't own a phone without root. Too many apps that need it, and too much bloat. Stock vs. how my phone is now, rooting and flashing a custom ROM is 100% worth it.

I rooted with superoneclick on 2.3.5. Does superoneclick work with 2.3.6?
IMHO there's no point in flashing superuser via cwm..... just flash a custom rom instead. Mr x has a 2.3.6 rom you can flash.

Flash recovery. Once recovery is good to go, its near impossible to break the phone just make a nandroid of your stock ROM and store it safley somewhere. Have fun flashing :-D

[Q] It probably been asked before but...

I am thinking about rooting my phone (since my upgrade isn't until November and I want ics) but I have a few questions.
1. How difficult is rootng the Epic?
2. They say it's difficultto brick this phone but if I do how difficult is it to recover?
3. Will rooting require wiping of all phone data?
4. In Novemeber when I go get my LTE phone how difficult is it to unroot?
5. Lastly, what is the best rom with for beginners (I know a little about tech and programming but impatient so I want the easy one)
That is all, thanks in advanced for any help.
Excuse any spelling errors... you on an epic you know why they there.

1. Real easy on EC05 but if you already upgraded to Gingerbread, a little more difficult. Qbking77 has made some amazing easy to follow videos. Google qbking77 how to root EI22 OTA. If you can't find it I can get you a link tonight.
2. A true brick means a dead phone, no lights, no power, no nothing. That is difficult to recover from. If it just goes into a boot loop or something like that it is pretty easy to recover usually requiring a computer and Odin. Also videos available. A lot of videos are in the stickies in the top of General subforum.
3. No, rooting does not wipe your data. Once you are rooted there are backup programs available that I recommend you use before flashing ROMs.
4. If you want to unroot to sell the phone it is as simple as using Odin to put full stock back on. That will also wipe your data for easier sale.
5. Hmmm...I think Legendary is very beginner friendly. I put it on my GF's phone and she LOVES it.
Feel free to ask questions here as you go or PM me. But watch those videos.

Ever-helpful kenny is spot-on again. This pretty much sums it up. The only thing I would add is another ROM to try out would be the CleanGB one. I put that on wifey's phone and she likes that one. I'm a Legendary guy and I would say it's pretty easy to use. I don't have any issues with it at all. The CleanGB ROM is more stock-ish than Legendary, so it's really up to you.
qbking makes really good videos, as mentioned. He even shows you exactly what threads to go into and get what you need out of them. The only thing easier/better would be to have someone physically show up at your house and do it for you.
Spot on info... but rooting gingerbread is also super easy... download the rom you want to use (kernel will be included in the rom) odin cwm 5.0.2.7 with nothing checked (not even auto reboot). Pull battery when odin finishes. Boot into cwm using 3 finger method directly after odin and flash rom... now you are rooted on the custom gb rom... if you want to stay stock you will have to download the su.zip and a custom kernel (believe there is a stock one with keyboard fix) odin the kernel and then cwm and then flash su.zip. rooted on stock.. see pretty easy!

[Q] Coming from OG Evo to E4GT

I purchased this phone yesterday after a great year with my Evo and two with a Hero before that. Even though I haven't posted alot I've been rooting and customizing my phones for years. I was even to the point with the file system and stuff that I would add and remove things from roms before I flashed them so I feel like I know what I'm doing with an Android phone.
This thing is a whole other animal though as far as I'm concerned. I've searched, I've read and I still don't understand half the lingo used here. I don't even know how to ask the questions I want to ask honestly. I hate having to jump through hoops just to flash a ROM.
I am rooted. Baseband is el29, kernel is 2.6.35.14-rogue_ET-1.4.1+ and build is Calkulin 3.0. I installed Rom Manager from the market and got the official Clockwork Mod Recovery because I didn't like the recovery that was put on my phone when I rooted.
So from here with the setup I explained what roms can I just place on my sd card and flash through recovery after a wipe? I don't want downgrade to a previous anything or change a modem or use Odin because I don't know what any of that stuff means and there is no where I can find that it's explained very well.
I appreciate any help that is offered and I know I come off as negative but so far this phone is extremely intimidating to do anything with and I don't want to brick it. I never worried about bricking my Evo cause I'm not sure that's even possible anymore
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I worked on a friends EVO once and didn't understand half of what you guys had to do to root and flash so the feeling is mutual, lol. First off if you're going to switch to ICS start on the EL26 kernel with CWM. Anything else and you risk a hard brick. Odin is actually the easiest to flash with. Sfhub has Odin one-click that makes it easy as hell.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23478866&postcount=869
And here's a really good how-to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391732
And download mobile Odin, DON'T use ROM Manager. That will almost certainly brick your phone. Just delete it to be safe.
one of the things you're going to have to get used to with this phone, is that the kernels and recoveries are tied together. Its not like any other android phone i ever used that you could swap out kernels and use whichever recovery you wanted.
You have a Samsung phone now. You are in the promised land. Samsung phones are a lot easier to work with than HTC phones.
Basically any ROM here can be flashed using Clockwork Mod Recovery unless it says otherwise. I'd like to point you over to QBKing77's youtube channel. He has a ton of "how to's" and reviews for a lot of ROMs on the E4GT.
http://www.youtube.com/user/qbking77
I'm sure you'd appreciate that. My family uses HTC phones and whenever they want something done to their phone, I tear up and hope that QBKing77 got an EVO since the last time I needed him.
Also the great thing about Samsung is that if you do happen to brick your phone, Odin will save your life.
If you have any question feel free to PM me or something
You cannot use a GB kernel with an ICS ROM and you cannot use an ICS kernel with a GB ROM.
Coming from stock EL29 you can use the Oneclicks to upgrade to the newer FD ROMs or just flash most through CWM unless they state otherwise.
If you do decide to go ICS(FD24 FD26 etc) and want to go back to GB ROMs, you need to flash the EL26+CWM through Odin(which isn't as complicated as you think) and go right to recovery as the phone tries to reboot, then flash the GB rom.
Seriously check out qbking though, he is the biggest help and his videos are phenomenal. Hope that helps a little.

You need to used Odin to flash EL26+cwm.tar. However, you do not need a computer, I use mobile odin android app religously. It is definitely worth the 5 bucks. For mobile odin just keep the EL26+cwm.tar on your phone, when you want to leave a rom open mobile odin app, point it to that .tar and flash. Then you will have the best copy of cwm on your phone and can start wiping/flashing any roms, kernals, or modems.

Last noob question.... I cant find the tar, i only see .exe files and zips to have it flashed in CWM......
Edit: Found it!, but i have 2 files one i found that was StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5 which is like 8megs, but i did d/l SPH-D710.EL26_CL839620_ROM_ROOTED-sfx.exe, and extracted it via 7zip, then found the 400 meg .tar... which one should i use?
Btw, thanks for your help!

You can nandroid right back! You will have to have a kernel that will let you use CWM such as FD02 or EL26 to get to recovery for the nandroid.

Thanks for all the help but I'm strongly considering returning this phone. I've read till my head hurts and the most common words I see here is brick. I don't want to take that chance. How anyone could think dealing with an Evo is worse than this I don't understand. With the Evo you put the rom on the sd card, wipe, and flash. No worrying if you have the right modem/kernel/cwm combination. It's a nice phone, but I really regret buying it now. 3g is also slooooooow.

I also recently moved to this phone from the evo. The epic touch blows the evo away in every way possible! There is definitely some studying to be done but its worth it! Once you get the hang of things its a breeze.
Same here. I've had the phone since latter part of December and have not rooted it yet ...mostly because my laptop has the screen of death. But noticed the slight difference in the method in flashing roms on the E4GT. But after seeing some video on that AOKP rom I'm getting antsy and need to get my computer fixed!!

You are not rooted if apps won't pull it. You don't need root to theme. There are plenty of launchers. Since you seem to have a CWM, you can flash a rooted ROM.

did some reading but didnt really find what i was looking for in this section.
i have the Note 2. v 4.1.2 but i want to downgrade to 4.1.1 so that i can unlock my device so i can use any carrier.
but then i would want to do the 4.1.2 update again completely stock from the OTA or whatever its called. and still have it permanently unlocked from the previous 4.1.1
should i use odin and a stock 4.1.1tar file for the PDA to flash it or would this be the wrong way of doing this and possibly voiding my warrenty
Well there's a few ways of doing that. The way you mentioned!
But you can also just downgrade your modem to the J2, and you can perform the unlock that way... But if unsure about what your doing, do some research..

I root to freeze a bunch of useless system apps. That alone is enough for me.
Rooting is only 1 part of a very large puzzle when you are talking about modification ...
Root is only a tool ...
And the real fun starts when you can build and theme or modify any number of parts inside your device ...
You don't own it unless it's rooted ...and you'll never fully enjoy it until you make the changes that unleash what these devices are capable of ...
And that starts by reading and learning ...then reading and learning more...
Then you will be on your way to making the phone truly yours ....g

Virgin mobile 4.4 update fails .. Aborted. BUT I WANT 4.4 and unroot :),i need help.

I'm having this problem too, I don't consider myself a noob, but my wife is sick she's pregnant and I have 3 daughters under 6. I have searched the forums until my eyes full with blood. I have a virgin mobile galaxy s3 rooted using clockwork mod custom recovery. Twice now they have offered to 4.4 update, frankly, I want to take it and unroot, I want the new update and I will root it again myself later. But both times it fails. Aborted. I have gathered in the threads its something to do with my custom recovery when I need it spelled out more than that. I've been working 19 hours a day and I'm a bit delirious. What can I do to make the update go through I don't care losing root. And my friends I'm sorry but I have looked everywhere for the answer and I am just exhausted with 2 jobs in a baby on the way. I apologize in advance can someone spell out for me what I should do I do not have a p_c or a computer can I do this from the phone? Is there a custom recovery or method I can do so the update will take? It gets more confusing more I read.. This time in from the little bit of research I have found I do not know if the update is still on my phone or not? I can't find it? They have offered it to me twice and when I check for the update in the update menu it is gone. I hope Samsung and virgin does not stop offering it because as crazy as it sounds I want a 4.4 stock unrooted.rooted I hope the ota is still on here. Can someone help me? You guys are awesome for years I've been looking at these threads and I rarely have to post because it's all spelled out. But this time I need a little help from my friends. Virgin Mobile galaxy s3 4.3 knoxed up clockworkmod custom recovery. I'm sorry if this is redundant but my situation is unique. I want the 4.4 stock and I don't know what I can do to make it happen. Been following these threads for years you have made my life more entertaining and much easier

Don't learn do when he found me yet! I've done a bit more research and I have uncovered that I have to get a different recovery, but I wonder if there's any recovery I could use other than stock? I'm not sure how to go back to stock recovery now

You'll need to find the stock recovery tar file and use Odin. No custom recovery will allow you to install an OTA.
