[Q] How to install Stk.apk (sim tool kit) properly? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi all.
On the stock ROM of Galaxy Nexus (4.0.1) there was sim tool kit app (stk.apk) included. Now i am using custom rom Maguro Milestone build 2 (4.0.3), and the sim tool kit app is not there anymore.
Trying to adb push to /system/app successfully, but it is not listed on the drawer.
Any idea how to fix this?
Appreciate your help. thanks.

Firstly you need to ensure that you can install any apk file. To check this go to Settings > Security and tick the Unknown Sources box.
Then copy the APK to the phones internal storage, download a file explorer from the Market (ES File Explorer) locate the file, run and then Install.

Was gonna say the exact same

thanks for the tips.
But i did exactly that.
I have a custom rom (which means i am rooted and unlocked) and i put the file in the /system/app directory already using adb push or manually by using the root explorer from the handset.
I can see the file, when i double click it it says "View or Install?" i installed it, then:
Application not installed.
Maybe there are some steps that i missed? This same stk.file i got from the stock 4.0.1 rom, so it should be compatible with my network and my handset.
Anyone else facing same problem?

I'm facing exactly the same problem ... help is really appreciated.

Check the file permissions. Make sure they are the same as the other apks in the directory.

From my experience normally STK does not show up in app drawer but it is in fact working. This is from other phones on both AT&T in USA and Softbank in Japan.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk

stk is like spare parts, it only shows up in app drawer if i build a userdebug/eng release. if using a user build, it won't show up, at least i haven't figured out how to do it from source.

Same Problem on NEOV Pureness Custom ROM
SOLUTION:
download SIM Toolkit 4.0.4-2.6.22.zip at 4shared.com
install at recovery mode

STK shows up every time I flash - I have to delete it using Root Explorer. Doesn't serve any purpose in the UK.
However, I've been unable to get any app to show up in the launcher on JB after copying it to the apps folder. I know permissions etc are correct, so perhaps this is a JB change?

Try removing your sim, boot up, shut down, put your sim back and try again?

The SIM toolkit is a system app so you can't "install" it.
Pushing it to /system/app/ is the correct procedure.
However, STK.apk needs the same credentials as Phone.apk or it won't work, this manifests as not showing in the app drawer.
You need a copy of STK for your specific ROM or one from a compatible ROM.
i.e. STK from any Google 4.0.x build will work on any other Google 4.0.x build - however it will not work on an AOSP build (and vice versa).

Anyone who can send me an stk.apk for an aosp build?

This. The old firmwares don't need it but for some reason the new ones need to have the pin activated for it to show.

Newbie question
nikzDHD,
Just a newbie question:
See that you posted the 2.3.5r1 apk.
I am on a 2.3.4 kernel (rooted), but have little knowledge on Android:
See that you posted the Email.apk, but not the Email.odex
I am on a stock kernel (posted by Intratech), and AM rooted, but not sure whether it will work. Will I need to remove the current Email.odex (will it be created?) or should I leave it in place, and will it work with stock (=odexed?) firmware?
Kind regards,
Newbie
Hi mate,
Urm I think you should be able to delete the odex, just backup incase then run this, I've not been on stock since I first got this phone. Pretty sure it may work without odex file.

The Email.odex currently in your /system/app folder relates to the Samsung email client and can be left. If you delete it, you'll need to delete the Email.apk, EmailWidget.apk and EmailWidget.odex too.
The reason nikzDHD didn't post an odex file is because the .apk posted contains the classes.dex inside it (odex is an optimised version of the .dex file and is placed along side the .apk rather than in it).
If an odex file doesn't exist for an application, Android will create a classes.dex file from the .apk and place it in the /data/dalvik-cache folder, ready for the dalvikVM to use.
Edit: Nevermind, I had to many phones connected to the Exchange server but I didn't get the warning email until I actually went online and checked mail that way. Working great for me now.
Can't get this to work correctly on the Epic 4G Touch. Able to add an account but it never pulls in data, I'm guessing this is due to differences in the generic SGS2 and the E4GT.
Unfortunately you can only sync back upto 30 days. With the stock Samsung mail app one can sync all mails. Is there a way to change this feature in the mail app supplied in this thread?
FC
Just FCs on me. I'm running stock XXKI4, rooted with the Siyah 2.1 kernel. Tried to remove the odex file as well.....just in case but same result.
As it's the same name as the stock Samsung client (email.apk) I assume the Samsung client needs to be removed not renamed.....
TIA

yes, I changed the permissions and the owner to root as that's what all other files had in that folder.
This works great for me, and fixes the wakelock problems I had with exchange email on the AOSP 2.3.4.
But with a custom DPI it messes up the formatting - had to uninstall it.

I got it working now after removing the email widget, using Titanium Backup to wipe the apps data and rebooting a few times. Not sure what did it in the end but it was working. That said, without a resize option (font and/or email) this doesn't work for me. Thanks anyway. Let's hope Samsung fix their mail client!
Installed on Batista70 FOXHOUND EDITION 2.5.
And it works great! Tnx²

Just grab any email.apk from another rom or your rom just extract the rom file, go into system/app and copy and paste email.apk to same location on your phone and set permissions. You can use something like root explorer.

Dark Dialer?

Anyone have the dark dialer by chance?
I see that it's in the HDC Note 3 (knockoff version).
That is a 720P device so the DPI would probably need to be run at 320 on our 1080P device though. Or at least use app settings to fix that.
Running Darthstalker V5 here, would love to have the dark dialer!
There's are a few choices in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2480163
Also if you just wanted a dark dialer you can use compatible Xthemes afterwards

Ok found a solution!
This requires root and the ability to rename/remove system APKs.
I extracted four files for the dialer and contacts out of an international based Rom. (Vision-X)
The files are:
SecContacts.apk
SecContactsProvider.apk
SecPhone.apk
SecTelephonyProvider.apk
Use the files found in the rom zip /system/app/
On the local device (I use Root Explorer) you must browse to the respective system folder and open it R/W.
You may delete the originals (have the same name), I rename them adding .light to them just in case.
Copy them over and reboot the phone.
Your shortcuts may disappear for phone and contacts from your dock, I use Nova and was able to drag the ones from the desktop down to the dock.
Everything works, dark dialer and contacts just like the stock Note II!
Just replaced the 4 files like u stated and noe i cannot open the dialer...freezes for a few seconds and then says "unfortunately, contacts has stopped working"...
Funny i can open and view my contacts...dark theme worked...but phone dialer fc's.
Any suggestions? I'm on darthstalker5 wonderchild kernel. Thanks!

That's odd, that's the same ROM I'm using. Where did the files come from? I pulled them right from the zip on Vision-X.
I did everything right on the phone using Root Explorer.
You must do a full reboot after the copy as well. Mine said it could not find the program when I didn't reboot. After rebooting it worked perfectly.
thanks
I did the same exact thing you did, including reboot and clearing cache/dalvic

That's strange you get FC on contacts. Wonder what it could be.
I'm using Touchdown for Exchange that has its own contacts however I still have to copy the exchange contacts to the phone.
The only thing I recall is when I first did this and opened the dialer for the first time it did seem like it was borked where the dialer took about three seconds to show up. Now it works just as the original but has the dark dialer which I prefer. I never liked the light dialer that Samsung started with on the S4. Darthstalker is my fav ROM since I first got the phone in early October as well.
I may get brave when 6.0 comes out and put the updated files in the zip and flash it to see what happens but replacing them is pretty easy with Root explorer. Maybe try downloading the zip again? Usually a corrupt one fails on opening but you never know.
Thanks...ill try that

What zip are you extracting the files from?
Mine came from this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559321
I had the original 12/7 release. There is a newer 12/18 version. I would recommend using the 12/7 version. That works here. With DarthStalker 5 I was able to get the dark contacts and dialer working just by renaming the originals and replacing them with the same files from the zip.
When DS6 was released yesterday, I removed those APKs from the (DS6) zip and replaced them with the ones from Vision-X. Works great. Ditto for camera APK. The only reason to do that is to stop the annoying behavior of transition animation reverting back to 1 whenever the camera is used.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559321
I had the original 12/7 release. There is a newer 12/18 version. I would recommend using the 12/7 version. That works here. With DarthStalker 5 I was able to get the dark contacts and dialer working just by renaming the originals and replacing them with the same files from the zip.
When DS6 was released yesterday, I removed those APKs from the (DS6) zip and replaced them with the ones from Vision-X. Works great. Ditto for camera APK. The only reason to do that is to stop the annoying behavior of transition animation reverting back to 1 whenever the camera is used.

OmniSwitch APK

Just pulled this out of the latest OmniRom.
Quite a nice new approach to an app switcher in sort of a PIE way of doing things.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m80nJjZFK0o
Needs to be installed from: system/priv-app (take note it is the priv-app folder!) with permissions corrected to: rw-r--r--
Installed and running on Cyanogenmod nightly but should work on any 4.4.X rom.
**Updated APK to latest from 30-04-2014 Nightly**
Awesome! Works great on my nexus 7 trying it on my nexus 5 now. Wonder why they use low quality icons?

nexus 5, error, kill all aps, and more....
Thanks for this. One question though, is it just me or are the icons a little fuzzy?

Pretty sure there was a question about this on the Omni forum, hopefully they will improve it as it progresses.
Mine crashes trying to close all apps button. Installed in the required folder as mentioned in the install notes but no dice
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I downloaded n installed but it seems to be pulled from an older version. It did not give you the option to disable the drag handle option. I remembered I have the 2/20 nightly version backed up (titanium backup). I restored the app only. It now gives me the option to disable the drag handle. Only issue I have so far, is that when you long press the home button, it still brings up the normal app switcher, not omniswitch. Any ideas?

Can I do this on my phone? Set the permissions? Every time I've tried to its never worked properly???

It installs but crashes every time I try closing apps

Installed on n7100 running jellykat v4, everything works fine except the inability to kill apps of the switch. Still enjoying it.
If you put the apk in the system/priv-app and put the correct permissions , everything works great...kill apps works without issues

I tried to push it into system /priv-app but Es file explorer tells me 'permission denied'. I cannot change permission of the apk before pushing, file explorer don't give me this option. What I'm doing wrong?
For the moment I installed the app but gives me fc when I try the kill app button.
I changed it with Titanium Backup into system app but still the same problem, I cannot move it from system /app to system /priv-app

Hi, I did just as you said, used root explorer, changed permissions, but it force closes when killing apps.
well
i dont know what to tell you guys
to me it works without issues
using root explorer, mount R/W
copy the apk to /priv-app folder
change the permissions to rw-r-r
reboot the device

Yes, now it works, at least pushing it into the right folder and set the permissions. But kill app still gives me fc of the app..
I'm on carbon rom now, so I have everything in the nav bar and don't need omni switch anymore.

Same here. Get fc on killing apps. Eventhough I did it exactly as described in the beginning. Also using carbon rom.
I have updated the APK to the latest version from the 30-04-2014 nightly OmniRom.
Try this one and see if there is still a FC.
If there is I would have to assume that Carbon Rom has had some customisation done that interferes with OmniSwitch and I will add a note to OP.

Tried the new version. For some reason setting the right permissions doesn't work. I set them with root explorer, then reboot. When the app is installed, I turn it on, and it gives me a message that the app can't get the right permissions. Can't understand what I am doing wrong, but it seems me that i do everything right as before.

so if the problem is only the icon there is another way:
-download the new icon
-install custom launcher as nova
-long press to the icon that you want change
-press the icon image
-choose from gallery app
- select the new icon
there are other app that can change the icon.. as:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jy.iconchanger.ad&hl=it
Yes, i am do it this for Now. But the icon is not the most important. I mean, All The app have a new design. I will try to fix it when I back home.

Here you go.
Edit:if you want to try, the zip attached is the newer apk and will install it properly. Just flash it in recovery. If it doesn't work, it may not be compatible with your ROM.

Because I take Fc when I install it like a normal apk too. I Just wanna use one of this Message Apps, Stock or CM 12.1, i really dont like Google Messenger, Textra, etc. Its really big problem because I dont have idea how to make the compatibility. Anyway, thanks a lot for try.
