A lot of people here are saying Google can/will update the camera quality in an update. Is that even possible? It seems odd that a 2011 camera sensor shoots such poor photos in low light. Its decent in really bright environments but anything else is really poor. There's a ridiculous amount of noise in photos.

Yea they could, but it would be a pretty hefty sized update.
Probably just ISO adjustments and tweaks.

This **** needs to take photos in widescreen. It can do 1080p video but take 4:3 pics. That's my biggest beef.

1080p = 1920 x 1080 pixels. 2073600 pixels, which is about 2 megapixels. In other words, the widescreen of 1080p isn't actually using the full sensor, whereas the 5mp still photos do. Automatic widescreen cropping could be added in an update, or via a different app.

Yeah I agree, I think also something in compression department.
Once I take a peek on meta of picture taken by this phone. For f/2.8 and ISO 640 the result was too grainy too much noise. I believe they could improve this.

Does everyones camera suck? The pictures are really grainy. Is this fixable or should I get a replacement?

set iso to 100 and you'll see perfect pictures
samsung purposely sets high iso under automatic settings to keep a fast shutter time, this sacrifices picture quality

I tried that, but now there's a blur in my pictures...This is a picture i just took with iso 100...let me know if this is considered "perfect".
What happens if you set it higher then 100?

Is that "aqua di gio" i see! nah i noticed your in kind of a low light setting and sometimes our phones aint the best in that situatiion using the same settings u will achiece some very nice pics in normal lighting and brighter (outside)
Low light is bad. Samsung Camera is to Nikon as the 4S is to Canon

I took my GS2 to a punk rock show in a very low lit club and took some pictures and video of the band. My buddy took his iPhone 4 (not 4s) and took some pics and video as well. All of his pics and most of his video made mine look total ****! In bright light our cameras are very good, but in low light I am sickened with this phone!
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA Premium App
tbh I've been wondering the same thing as the OP.
I had high expectations for our phone's camera with reviews and sample pics that I saw beforehand, but have not been able to achieve half decent pics... especially in low-light conditions! If anyone has managed to find some settings that work best, please share!
A phone, no matter how much you pay, should not be a substitute for an actual camera. This holds true especially for planned events. This camera is perfect for high quality pictures and videos during unexpected moments.
You know, I feel quite the fool in that my wife has generally taken most of the pics with my phone so far, and I've only been repeating her concerns and haven't really experimented with the can much myself.
What I have found is, like it was mentioned before, setting the ISO to 100 is important. Next is finding a scene that works well with what you're taking a pic of (I have found that party mode really makes colours pop). Also metering can be adjusted to change the center of focus. But so far I've been happy with these settings...
Anyone else have any tips or favourite settings they use?

Aqua di gio it is...guilty as charged!!
Low light? Hmmm, isn't that what the camera flash is for? My sensation took way better pictures than this. *sigh*
Sgs2 has one of the best cameras in the Market. No regrets.

If I'm going to an event I still take a dedicated camera.
I only use the phone camera for spur of the moment shots and for the most part they are pretty clean.

Nice! I played with the ion yesterday in a corp store and I love how moving objects aren't blurry, major issue with my htc aria and iPad when snapping shots of my kids.

I really like the camera, especially the way it handles shots taken in low light. And having the dedicated camera button is a major plus as well.

camera performance with other apps
has any one tried using camera 360 app or something similar?
am considering buying this phone to use on t mobile usa but some reviews undermine the camera (gsmarena for example)
i get better pics in the auto mode from camera 360 app than the stock camera on my x10i with stock 2.3
so maybe if that's the case then there might be hope for it to get better with updates

honestly, the pictures taken by ion aren't as good as those by x10. pictures by x10 are clearer and they have more realistic colors..
same object but the one taken by x10 is just clearer while they both get the right focus point and under same settings (except that 12 megapixel on ion and 8 megapixel on x10).
also, a simple way to tell which phone takes better pictures is to take a look at the lens. larger lens will definitely take better pictures. appearantly, x10's camera lens is larger than ion's.
the only good point for ion is that its focus and shutter speed is super fast, so you can hardly get any blurry pictures
finally, compare if you don't trust me, but remember to view pictures on larger screen first

I wonder how many people were aware that greater megapixel count don't necessarily equal better pictures. Hopefully ppl did research before purchasing this phone.
But I will say that the colors are much better on the ion and quality as well. Also it takes much better pictures at night when compared to the x10, I was surprised since the ion is horrible under this condition, especially when compared to the current wave of phones.
This is a picture over at lax
Hey,
In what country's is this phone delivered with a 13mp camera? And is it better than the 8 mp camera?
Also, is it better then the camera in 4x HD?

The Sprint version has 13mp.
It seems the 8mp is at least as good or better in terms of quality of image. There are some comparison sites where you can see the difference if you do a Google search.

Mega pixels don't equal camera quality.
They only have to do with scaling.

I still enjoy the camera quality better than any other camera I've ever had.
The camera is pretty good. I think where you will find some issues with it will be in low light or very bright situations. The thing is that the camera does not compensate very well for low light, and bright light washes out the pictures some. I like the camera, and it has taken a lot of really good pictures for me, problem is that it has also taken a lot of really crappy pictures for me. The inconsistency is frustrating, but that said, it's better than either my Motorola Cliq (oh yeah!) or my Samsung Epic.
I have learned how to take pics with the camera. I am still not 100% happy with it in the fact that I cannot pull it out and snap a pic. I have to clean the lens, open the camera app then touch to focus and then snap the pic. If I skip the touch to focus then 80% of my pics are blurry. Really sucks but since I have been doing the touch focus step I have been getting way better pics.
The camera is great for a phone. Anybody who says otherwise uses superior equipment or simply doesn't know how to take a good picture. Now the front facing camera, there's no helping that. Makes things look melted/blurred.
Thank you guys for following the topic.

With _Epic's camera mod, the camera is great.
Stock ZVB camera sucks.
With AOSP, it's even worse.
Has anyone found a way to prevent the flash from massively blowing out the resulting photos? It seems way too bright and the software does a terrible job compensating for it. My Evo LTE did an awesome job with flash photos. I'm on stock rooted ZVB with Epic's mod.

same for me. the flash just whites everything out and is complete garbage.
Good question. The flash worked great before the jelly bean update, but now, I'm not so sure what they were thinking.

I have found that the setting on the camera really changes things. Out in Yosemite I was taking pictures and some were really ****ty and others great. The biggest things that made a difference were touch to focus and then changing the mode. For instance last night none of my pics were turning out so I set night mode on, wala, great photos. Then we were taking landscape pics and they were alright, changed it to landscape and it was much better. But changing the white mode or scene or whatever to sun really helped too. Its just amazing how bad the auto settings are cause once you play with it, its a great camera to me.
