[Q] Forced eL30 update Can i still root?

So my FF cam wasnt working along with a few other things on my phone so i took it to sprint and paid 30$ some odd dollars to fix.... When i get my phone back i realized they upgraded my software.... [email protected]#K.
I am now on GB EL30 2.3.6 and am searching for a root method... So far i have read that there is no solid root for this version yet and may not be for some time??
Here is where i need help... Am i wrong here? Is there a root for 2.3.6 GB out there?
Does the Gingerbreak work for this version... I have a feeling that it wont.... Can anyone confirm?
IF there is no way to root this version, will i be able to go back to an older version and root my phone ? like 2.3.whatever?

Gingerbreak doesn't work....You have to odin in a recovery to flash su and it won't stick afterwards so make sure you have a su.zip flash the recovery make sure auto reboot isn't checked and 3 finger salute and flash su and reboot you'll be stock with su permissions.. I do think some kernels will actually work on it though I've read tw.bml samurai kernel works fine.

That is correct, for a recovery look for cwm5 in the development stickies, make sure its a .tar file extension and not a .zip

It's volume down. And make sure you add the power button last.

Okay wait let me update there is now a custom el30 kernel so do this.
Make sure you have the custom kernel .zip before going step by step sorry wrote this up in a hurry.
1. Get your su.zip and your recovery.tar(which ever recovery) and get odin to recognise and so forth.
2. Odin in the recovery.tar and make sure auto reboot isn't checked.
3. Hold power button, camera button, and volume down to boot into recovery and Flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1460540 scroll to find the .zip link. Once this is flashed flash su.zip
4. Boot up and you'll be rooted with with a custom recovery

I cant get Odin to work on the computers at work, im assuming they don’t let users have the privileges that it takes to run this program and complete this operation so I will have to wait till im home to use Odin but I will report back later.

Yes this will be stock rooted... and there isn't an exploit for our stock kernels anymore samsung got smart I guess.... root calls for a modded kernel now anyways yes this will be just what you need for tethering

Here's the steps I used, but, I understand that toadlife now has a clean Kernel EL30 that takes the place of deleting the recovery script (that overwrites your CWM on reboot):
1. Attach phone to PC and mount...then copy the su zip file to the root of your SD card. Then unmount and unhook phone from pc.
2. Open Odin and uncheck everything. Put the CWM5.2.0.7 tar under PDA
3. Power off phone and then hold the Keyboard "1" key and Power at same time until phone gets the yellow triangle and says "Download Mode"
4. Attach the usb cable to PC and wait for a Yellow box to illuminate on Odin.
5. Now hit start and wait until it turns green and says "Pass"and the script has stopped running (the last line is something like 1 Pass 0 fail)
6. Unplug phone and remove battery (to get out of download mode without booting)
7. Now reinsert battery and 3 finger salute to CWM...from there, choose and install the su zip (now you are rooted).
8. Reboot and use your Root Explorer or other root explorer to go to system/etc and find the installer-recovery.sh file and delete it (you have to click Mount in Root Explorer to allow it to delete a system file).
9. Now power off and go back to download mode again and go into Odin with the CWM tar again, but make sure you check Autoreboot this time.
10. Now reinstall CWM with Odin like you did above.
If you use the kernel flash we mentioned above you can save yourself steps 8-10.

yes, but I think you have to delete the .md5 extension off the .tar file. Mine just has .tar at the end.

Instructions copied from the general forum.
1. Odin flash cwm 5.0.27 with reboot checked off (nothing checked), put file in pda.
2. when its done, unplug data cable and pull out battery.
without rebooting system.
3. vol down, camera, power, to get into cwm recovery
4. install su.zip and reboot the phone (now you have root)

5. install es explorer from market
5a. under menu/setting, check the box root explorer and mount file system
5b. browse into phone /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
delete "install-recovery.sh" script
(long press into that file and delete option will come out)
6. shut off your phone
7. odin cwm 5.0.27 again with reboot checked
8. restart, cwm and root will be stick forever.

Also Toadlife has a prerooted EL30 kernel over in the Development section.

Ok so i was able to get all of this done and it seemed to have worked but before i did it correctly i managed to screw this up.....
I accidently flashed the cwm recovery to the damn phone in odin and now my baseband version and harware version are unknown... Can anyone help me flash the correct Baseband version and hardware files back to the phone so i can start making phone calls hahaha....

friends and i mean its stucked deep!
i was running cm7 full63 nightly and some app my brother download stuck the phone.i take it in my hands flash it again with wipes and wasent working good.then i go to the cwm again.i do 4 wipes(factory-cache-davlik-battery)and go to mounds and storage and do format chace-data-system!and that was for defy the death!
it downgrade my cwm from 5.something and i have <3e> and it cant find my rom on apply sdcard;update.zip to flash it,it says ,can't mound cache;recovery/log,it cant do nothink with this cwm!!

Install RSDLite on your PC. Use WinRAR or 7zip to decompress the. gz file you downloaded (there is an sbf file inside - the clean Froyo firmware you want to flash - and save it somewhere.
Take your Defy and press the power and volume up button and release after some seconds so that you enter the bootloader mode (you see some white text on black ground).
Connect the phone via USB with your PC with RSDLite running.
In RSDLite click the button with the three dots and open the sbf file you extracted.
Hit the start button. Now it starts flashing the firmware, takes a couple of minutes.
When it's done the phone reboots and is running a Motorola Froyo firmware (not rooted or something, it can't really be called a ROM). If you want you can root, install CWM again etc and put your ROM in it again.
Almost always when your Defy is doesn't boot anymore or is somehow broken softwarewise, you can use this method to repair it.

If you want the recovery menu you need to install 2ndinit. http://goo.gl/5P89P
Open the app and install the recovery menu with it, then reboot (some say it is safer to reboot even two times). You get the blue LED after powering the phone on, you have to press volume down then. There you can get to the custom recovery and wipe data, cache, install zips from SD etc.

Clock work mod problem, please help

Galaxy S3 from at&t, i rooted my phone as soon as got it several months ago, I've flashed colockwordmode 3 times in the last day or so and i cannot make to work, i followed the steps exactly as described, Odin is showing the green pass, the binary cont is increasing every time I've tried but i can't get the phone to start in recovery mode by holding volume up, home and power! it just reboot and turns the phone on or it goes into the Samsung recovery mode (blue screen). Very frustrating!, anyone can please help.
BTW, when i rooted my phone i installed clockwordmode then and it worked fine, i had not has to use it since, I'm running the stock ROM i want to flash another ROM, before i do that i need to use clockworkmode and that's when i realized that it was not working anymore, then tried to flash it 3 times but no success. I still have root.

Have you tried twrp?

This will happen until you load a custom rom I believe. Same thing happened to me then when I installed a rom it started being able to boot into cwm

flash recovery again in odin but make sure the "auto reboot" box is NOT checked. once its done flashing, unplug it and remove the battery for a second. replace the battery and immediately hold down vol up+home+power. this should take you into cwm if it flashed correctly

this could happen when you didn't root it properly
anyways, if you are rooted(as you said), get twrp and see

If you still have root, you might want to try installing CWM directly from your phone, using the dd terminal command to copy CWM into the right partition:
Download the latest CWM .img file from CWM's site: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Put the file in your phone. For simplicity reason, I would suggest you put it in the root of your internal SD card. And because you will need to type the whole path+filename in the terminal in your phone, I would also suggest you rename the file to something simple, like cwm.img;
If you don't already have it, install Android Terminal Emulator;
Now, open the terminal emulator, and type the following commands:

dd if=/sdcard/cwm.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
(That is, if you rename the CWM file to "cwm.img" and you actually put it in the root of your internal SD card. If you put it somewhere else or did not rename your file, you will need to adapt the "if=" part of the command.)

Just curious: are you trying to flash CWM via Odin? If so where did you get it from? Did you install a botched version of stock recovery maybe (or one that is from another model of S3)? Try TWRP from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28019751&postcount=1. It is at the bottom of the post and it is labeled "Odin Flashable TWRP Recovery" under Miscellaneous files. Download and install via Odin.
And if you are on Jelly Bean, your flash counter will increment in your dealings with custom recoveries and roms. You only option at this point (if you have root still) is to get Triangle Away and run it in order to reset the counter. However, even if you clear your flash counter, if you go back into recovery it will trip again.

I'm still using stock ROM, i'd like to install a custom ROM but i'm reading that you have to have Clockworkmod to do a successful install.
When i check in the files of the phone (sd card) i can see the clockwordmod folder in there there but still can't get it to boot into cwm recovery, only the Samsung recovery and I've tried the volume up home and power button so many times but no success.
Why do you think it worked when i first rooted the phone and not now?

Yes I've tried 3 times via Odin, i can't remember where i got the cmw file from, it's a tar file (clockworkmod.TAR), the part i don't understand is why when i first rooted the phone in August cwm worked, i used it to install the root and now after trying to install it again 3 times i can't get it to work.
I'm using the stock ROM, not jelly bean.

I've tried it with "auto reboot" check and without but still no luck. Like i said it reboots in the Samsung rm.

Download goo manager app and open that. There will be an option to "install open recovery" in the menu. Voilà a superior recovery that's easier to use
You can even use it to boot into recovery or install the new update for it.

Easiest way to install TWRP is using GooManager from the Play Store.
1. Open GooManager.
2. Press the menu key to open the contextual menu, and select Install OpenRecoveryScript.
3. The app will ask you to confirm you really want to install a new recovery image.
4. GooManager searches for the correct TWRP build for your device. Look at the Filename line, it should display openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-d2att.img for AT&T or openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-d2can.img for Rogers/Bell/Telus. Again, confirm the installation.
5. Wait for the download to begin. TWRP will install. Done.
If it does not work or if GooManager does not find the correct build for your device -- in this latter case, this should raise a flag for you, as you may not have a SGH-i747/SGH-i747M; double check your phone model --, you can always install TWRP manually. From TWRP website (http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2), you can grab the IMG file to manually install from the terminal emulator, and a TAR file to install using ODIN.

So if that's the case (This will happen until you load a custom ROM) how can i back up my stuff before installing a new ROM? that's the reason i was trying to make cwm work so i could back my stuff.
Is there a different way to do a full back up?

if you have root, download Rom Manager and install cwm from the menu.
i've also heard that, if rooted, you can erase /system/recovery-from-boot.p and /system/etc/install-recovery.sh (using ES File Explorer or Root Explorer) an that will make cwmstick. this is due to newer software versions overwriting your stock recovery on reboot.

By installing cwm from the app store (ROM manger) will i get the same back up as i would with Odin install of cwm, in other words do i risk loosing my back up ROM using "ROM manager?"

you've created a backup already? if not, install cwm from ROM Manager, boot into cwm recovery and make your nandroid there. then you'll be all set to to try a new ROM

Back to stock rom??

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction. I have a acer iconia a100 rooted and currently running the carbon rom (4.2.2) and twrp recovery (2.6.3.0). I would like to go back to stock rom (ICS). I have not changed any kernals or anything like that. Can I just restore my nandroid backup of my stock rom or is there something specific I have to do? Also, I just looked and I dont have a stock backup with twrp, only with cwm. When I unlocked bootloader, I installed cwm, then must have done a backup of stock rom, then flashed carbon rom, then switched to twrp and made another backup so I would have to go back to cwm to restore nandroid. How do I go back to cwm from twrp?? Thanks for the feedback.
I looked in my internal storage and it looks like I have 2 zips, fastbootrecovery.zip and xsposeddisabler-cwm.zip, do I flash one of these?? and if I do, can I do it with es explorer?? Thanks

If you don't know what those zips are, or how to use them, then don't use them, period.
To get back cwm you can use fastboot to flash it back on or use one of the cwm installers in development, if any are still there, if you want to do it with fastboot you'll need some stuff to get ready, most of it should be there from when you rooted the first time, then a couple lines in a command prompt and you'll have it back. There's also stock rooted ICS ROMs available, so depending on what you want we can go from there.

I am going to sell my tablet so I would like to go to my backup of my stock rom. When I restore my stock backup, I can just do a full wipe, that will get me back to the starting point of just the basic rom, right?? That will wipe all my data from the backup rom, or will a full wipe erase the rom too?? I want to get back to the basic rom (just like if I install a new rom) have to set up accounts, wifi, etc).
Also, is there a tutorial or a step by step guide to reinstall cwm back on my tablet, since my stock rom was backed up with cwm? And where do I have the files to reflash cwm. Thanks for your assistance in helping me return my tablet to the state I want.

I found a site that has it step by step, installing cwm. Here it is.
Here it is guys, Stock CWM Recovery for the ACER A100.
Before anything make sure you have the latest ICS leak C/O Vache, Root, and Unlocked Bootloader.

Unlock your bootloader for fastboot, follow here:

once you have done all of the above, you should be ready to flash this recovery. Make sure you have ADB up and working properly. And place the recovery.img in your working folder (see below)
1- Open a command prompt in your working folder (usually in your platform tools, mine is C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools) make sure you are administrator.
2- Connect Tablet to pc and get excited.
3- Type: adb devices (verify your Tab is connected and listed)
4- Type: adb reboot bootloader
5- Once bootloader is in fastboot type: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
You will see writing recovery, flashing recovery, etc.

But it says make sure you have the latest ics leak?? Are they refferring to the rom?? If so, I currently have carbon rom istalled which is jellybean. This will not work then?? I am a little confused and any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

once you have done all of the above, you should be ready to flash this recovery. Make sure you have ADB up and working properly. And place the recovery.img in your working folder (see below)
1- Open a command prompt in your working folder (usually in your platform tools, mine is C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools) make sure you are administrator.
2- Connect Tablet to pc and get excited.
3- Type: adb devices (verify your Tab is connected and listed)
4- Type: adb reboot bootloader
5- Once bootloader is in fastboot type: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
You will see writing recovery, flashing recovery, etc.
6- Once flashed Type: fastboot reboot
7- Profit

Well, before the tab got official ICS, we had a leak. If you had read down the topics some you would've found it. You do not want cwm, you want twrp.

I need cwm to restore my stock rom. If I use the steps quoted below to reinstall cwm, will I run into any problems since I'm coing from carbon rom (jellybean) to stock rom which is (ICS)?

To just go back to stock to sell it you'll run into a couple issues coming from 4.2+, namely the storage path changes, you'll retain the /0 folders, however many were made. Otherwise following the guide that roman made will work to go back to 100% stock, I'll see if I can get a link, I'm in a waiting room with crappy data lol

Best way to return to 100% stock. No need to fuss with recoveries just install what he says then the ROM does the rest. While in twrp remember to go delete /0 directories or they'll remain there forever. Or until its deleted at a later date, but if you have stuff in there you should do it prior to going fully stock again.

Thanks for the response, youve fully confused me with the /0 folders?? What exactly is that?? When I go to es file explorer, I see sdcard0 (which looks like the internal storage) and sd01 which looks like my ext sd card. Is it one of those your are talking about??
Also, you said something about go delete in twrp, I went into twrp and did not find anything with that name?? am I deleteing something in twrp. Could you spell it out for me since I am a noob when it comes to reverting a device to stock. Thanks for taking the time to explain this.

that is something happening with cwm. i had this problem. it keeps creating a folder names 0 and keep moving old files into that whenever you install a new rom.

Hello guys. I need your feedback. I have a A100 that is rooted and is currently running carbon rom 4.2. I am going to be selling this in the next couple weeks because I just don't use it anymore now that I have a second pc.Do you think it would be more advantagious to sell this just the way it is (rooted and custom rom) or should I take it back to completely stock? Or if it is more advantagious to sell it with a custom rom, which rom would you guys suggest?? Thanks again for any and all suggestions.

Please Help!! I was trying to go to stock ics and these are the steps I used.The simple method to revert back to stock ICS from a custom ROM on an A100.
+++Locked bootloader, no custom recovery, no root. Full stock .014 rom. It will recieve OTA updates to latest Acer version.+++
Get Ready
1) Download this flashable Stock recovery zip, and place in your normal flashing location, - Thx 4 help pio

2) Download the Official .014 Stock ICS rom

3) Rename the Stock ICS rom to "update.zip", no quotes (make sure you have "hide known file extensions" UNCHECKED, in the folder options). And place it on the root of your microSD card. This will allow you to see the file extension to verify that it is named properly.
Get it Done
1) Flash the Stock recovery zip with your custom recovery. Then wipe cache, davlik cache, and wipe data/factory reset.
2) Reboot to system.
3) Allow it to sit for 5 minutes or so.
4) Then Power off.
5) Update from the microSD card by holding down the power and volume rocker closest to the corner at the same time, until you see "erasing cache .".. ect, ect. The stock rom install should start by itself, dont touch anything, wait for it to reboot.

Now I get the android symbol with the red triangle, that stays for about a minute, then it reboots and stays on thye acer screen. When I did the steps and was going to reboot, I received a waring while in recovery sayiny that I dont have a op installed. I did it anyway, as posted and now I'm stuck, can anyone PLEASE help me.I tried doing a reset with steps 2 though 4 but while pressing the vol up and letting go of the power button, it does not vibrate.
I try to boot into recovery with vol up + power, it boots than says erasing cache, then booting into recovery, the the android synbol comes up with the red triangle.

I can't even get into recovery. It says bootloader (unlock mode) when I pwer it on. my galaxy w turn black and nothing work, its happened after im installing cwm. maybe because im too fast pull out usb wire. :crying: please help me. now im realize why am i doing this, after all im only 15teen. T.T help me.

your screen doesn't even turn on ?

can you post sompe picture of that?

if you can go to the download mode (VOL DOWN + HOME + POWER) flash the stock rom through odin

Hi, I had a similar problem a day ago, I corupted CWM and couldn't boot into android, When i started my phone a samsung logo appeared and then black screen, I could access download mode ( Power button, Volume - and home button ) So all you do after you enter download mode is download Odin multi downloader, and a flashable ClockworkMOD recovery, ( PM me if you want links ) and flash it into the phone, after that just reboot the phone and you will be just fine.

I did this but, still not succeeded. Do you suggest to try to download the stock ROM instead of the CWM?

Hey,
First put your phone into download mode and plug it in to your PC and make sure Odin recognizes it, then add Ancora.ops in the OPS window and the recovery.tar.md5 in the One package window. Also make sure that One package , Auto reboot and Protect OPS are checked, you should uncheck reset time because i've hear that it is causing some problems. Then just click the " Start " button and sit back, you phone will be back on in few minutes.
Just a question : Did you have any android installed when you corrupted the recovery? If yes, after you flashed the recovery the phone will reboot and will boot into android, if not then just flash the rom file if you already have one in your sdcard/internal storage.
Your phone is soft-bricked, don't worry, it will be back and running again :laugh:
I just corrupted my recovery on my phone on purpose to try if the cwm recovery works. And yes, it worked, so it should work on your phone too.
Good luck flashing your recovery, Please answer back because I want to know if this method worked.

Finally Solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After long days and hundred tries, it works finally. The story is as below:
1- I failed to download the CWM 6.0.4.5 directly in this state using ODIN,
2- I downloaded the stock (Yes old 2.3.6 ginger bread ROM) using ODIN. However this version keep rebooting and never completed the start up.
3- With ROM installed now (even it's not booting), i tried to download older version of CWM using ODIN (CWM 5.0.4). It was successful!!
4- I tried to do the restore for my old system, but it failed as i did backup with newer version.
5- I flashed Monster ROM (4.2.2), it works wonderful.
6- I downloaded the CWM 6.0.4.5 finally using ODIN.
7- Now i'm using 4.4.2 on my mobile finally.
Advice: Never do a flashing to your mobile when you are not fully concentrating what you are doing. Also, make sure to download the right tool and ROM for your device.
Thank you for everyone who tried to help me.
