[Q] Need tips on trying out different ROMS. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hi there :3
I've been using (and loving) my GS2 for two month's now and not that I'm tired of Juggernaut ROM, I would just like to try out other ROMS and give them a test go.
Because wiping data is the best before using another ROM, I would like to know how other people do a recovery of their stuff? Such as history of Messaging / Call logs / Favorites / Numbers / Account Details and etc.
I'd be using Titanium Backup but I don't know if it recovers other than apps.
All tips would be helpful, please and thank you :3
~~

Favorites, numbers and contacts are all synced with your Google account. Once you sign in, it auto restores all of that, assuming you have it synced. Call logs and SMS/mms can be restored using titanium backup. You restore the SMS dialer storage data only, not data+app. That should restore your SMS and MMS. There should be a similar named restore file for the call log. Another alternative I use in conjunction with that is an app on the market called SMS Backup+. It backs up all call logs and SMS/MMS to your Google account which can be restored as well - with the exception that MMS can't be restored. Hope that helps.

Also wanted to add that using titanium to restore those data requires aa reboot for them to show up.
Edit: you can only titanium restore call logs/SMS/mms between Twiz roms. Titanium restoring that data from Twiz to CM7 based will not work. SMS Backup+ will however.

If flashing the same base Android version or similar (i.e. 2.3.6), I just do a Nandroid backup prior to flashing the new ROM, and then doing an Advanced Restore data in CWR right after flashing. Clear cache and Dalvik and reboot. All your data is as you left it. Some people have reported issues with this but it's the first thing I try before messing around with Titanium.

Does Titanium Backup save SMS files and call logs?

Does anyone know if this is possible in Titanium Backup? Restoring handcent and losing sms tests suck.
Same problem
Clearly you are switching roms when you restore your phone, right? If so, I was having the same problems. If you switch roms, there is no guarantee that your call logs and sms/mms will transfer or be restored. If it is the same rom that you used to backup, then they should be restored. I started to use Sprite Backup after Titanium, to save my app settings, call logs, messages, multimedia messages and system settings before I change roms. Doesn't take long, compared to Titanium.
Here are a couple free apps I use in addition to Titanium backup...
One for call logs: http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/call-logs-backup-restore_bcpj.html
Another for SMS: http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/sms-backup-restore_beyk.html?nav=area
I've gone from stock 2.1 ROM, to DamageControl ROM, to 2.2 OTA rooted and in all cases, I was able to backup/restore my SMS/call log via Titanium Backup

Ditto. I've went from 2.1 ROMs to 2.2 ROMs... fresh and DC
and ive used a donated version of Titanium backup... and it restored sms and call logs.

I have the donated version. Is there a setting where you have to enable to save those? Did you do any full wipes (data/factory) when going from one rom to the next?
I use titanium donated version and its really nice....especially using apps2sd.

Wouldn't it be easier to use MyPhoneExplorer or a similar program to backup call logs, sms etc.?
MyBackup Pro can backup call logs and sms/mms. I normally use that to restore them. Haven't had any problems when I jump roms and from 2.1 to 2.2.
If you rely on TiBackup, then backing up and later restoring [SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage would restore all of the messages.
It just saved my day after Desire HD decided to completely wipe out my mmssms.db.
MyBackup Pro is perfect with titanium.

which option restores the call log?
i use sms backup & restore from the market its amazing..
backs them up and saves them to your sd card and you can re download the app and restore them after a flash..
I thought titanium backup can do this though

I've got a wicked easy way to keep your call logs:
1) Make a Google Calendar titled "Calls"
2) Set Calendar to sync, but not show, the Calls calendar.
3) Download and install CallTrack from the Market.
4) Open CallTrack, have it sync all calls to the Calls calendar.
5) Enjoy! Worst case scenario: You lose the call logs in the Phone app (or your dialer of choice), but at least you still have all incoming, outgoing, and missed call numbers in your Google Calendar.
As for SMS... I've just come to use Google Voice for everything except Tasker, MMS, and things which require shortcodes (Twitter mentions/DMs, MyCokeRewards, etc.).
I know of many other apps there can restore call logs but I was just wondering if titanium backup can do it, the less app the Better

I'm not certain, but I had issues restoring SMS/MMS across ROMs when I switched between an HTC based ROM and an AOSP ROM (e.g. switching from stock to Cyanogen wouldn't restore the data, but switching from stock to Frost worked fine). As a side note, you will have to reboot your phone before the data will show up.
Titanium on an n1
Just rooted my n1 and installed the cyanomod 6. lots of fun but i'm neglecting the kids. as mentioned above I used ti to backup and restore the messages and calls files:
[CONTACTS/CALLS] Contacts Storage 2.2.1 - calls?
[SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage 2.2.1 - messages?
Only gotcha was that I expected to see them immediately but it actually required a reboot. ROM Manager backup saved my restores and rebooted at the same time.

Voyager/ahill44 -
I'm running midNIGHT v5 ROM right now, based on EC05. Very similar interface to stock though. If I run the backup of SMS/MMS/APN Dialer Storage, will it restore my SMS messages if I'm flashed back to [rooted] stock EC05? I'm still on RFS file system, not EXT4.. it should work, correct?
Thanks!
*EDIT* - was able to find the originals in the TitaniumBackup folder, replace it with the ones from this morning, just reflashed and restored. Worked like a charm, THANK YOU

Restore SMS on CM7/MIUI?

MIUI and CM7 both say to do a full wipe and not restore system settings, otherwise you risk getting random bugs.
As far as I've been able to figure out, my SMS messages are stored in system settings in Titanium Backup.
So is there any way to get them back without doing a full system settings restore?

I don't think so, because when you restore the system file it would also restore other things from the previous Rom...
There is a app to back up sms. So best thing would be go back to Rom you were using and use that app, I don't know the name of but its in the market, and then you will always have them because of the app no matter what Rom you are on

Thanks.
I prefer the idea of storing them on SD card rather than Gmail so "SMS Backup & Restore" seems to do the job nicely.
Only caveat is it doesn't backup MMS.
The market app "syncmypix" does a great job of pulling FB pics into the native GB contacts app.

Help Please!!!! MD5 Mismatch

Hello All,
So I attempted to install my first ROM today and it was successful. Prior to installing I made a nandroid backup and it looks like everything went smoothly.
I tried out the new ROM and it wasn't to my liking. I want to restore to my Stock ROM but when going to backup and restore in ClockworkMod Recovery and clicking restore it says Checking MD5 sums then says MD5 mismatch!
What does this mean and how do I fix it? Thanks.
I figured out what I did wrong. When I made the nandroid I renamed the file and put spaces in the file name. When I renamed the file again with no spaces and tried another restore it worked perfectly. Thanks.

Yup. CWM backup files can't have spaces in them. Are you the one who was looking for suggestions to try custom ROMs? Did you not like DW?

Hi yoft1,
Yes, I was the one looking for suggestions to try ROMs. I actually liked DW. It was easy to install and booted fast even on the first boot. My main issues was that the Google play store kept force closing and wouldn't work. Also, there was no Gmail app. I know I can download it from the play store, but since it kept force closing it wouldn't work. Also since I am a Telus user the data icon shows 3G and not 4G for some reason. I know it's just cosmetic but I would like it to say 4G. I reverted back to stock for now.

If you know how to clear application data that should fix the force close. Roms always have the odd problem here and there upon first installation but they can easily be fixed and not touched again. If you're interested in trying again I could walk you through your issues, the end product should be a ROM with absolutely zero stability issues.
Thanks for all your help man. You are really going out of your way to make this a smooth transition for me. The only other issue was when I backed up my mms/SMS messages through Titanium Backup and restored after running DW it didn't take for some reason. All of my text conversations were gone. Also my call log was empty as well. What programs should I back up to restore this info? Also, I guess I could backup Gmail and restore that as well correct? Again your help is much appreciated. Peace.

I use SMS backup and restore, rather than tb, others have had issues restoring texts through tb too. If you want to restore call logs, call log backup and restore has worked well for others but I can't personally attest to that since I don't restore call logs between roms.
No need to backup gmail since it's all email in the cloud right?
The only things I backup are my apps (using titanium so I don't have to re download them, restoring through TB is much faster, just make sure you're not restoring any system data though) and my SMS.
No problem man.

You aren't supposed to install any system data? Because I restored Gallery, Google Play Store, Maps, SMS/MMS, Voice Command, Voice Recorder, Voice Search and Youtube.
Those apps were all considered system data, but I wanted to keep them so that's why I backed them up. Was I incorrect in doing this? Thank you.

System data usually doesn't play well across different ROMs. It's usually advised to not do that as it will cause random force closes. When you go into TB and go to batch operations, Just run "Restore missing apps with data" and you'll be fine.
Restoring data is okay, as long as it's for apps. This is your save data for games, etc. System data on the other hand, causes problems. Anything that isn't restored through "Restore missing apps with data" can be downloaded or is already included on the ROM.

I use Mybackup Pro - you can backup both contacts and messages
---------- Post added at 02:13 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:05 AM ----------
I did also get the mismatch recently. I don't know if it was a glitch. In my rom manager it shows cwm 5.0,2,7, but I recently flashed cwm touch. From the rom manager, I booted into recovery, and backed up my rom. Flashed a different rom, didn't like it, and tried to restore the one I had just backed up. I got the error, with no changes to the file name. So after completely reinstalling the previous rom, I shutdown, and booted into recovery with the volume up/down/power, backed up, and was later able to restore. It seemed to matter how I booted into cwm.
If this happens to you again without you changing any names, reflash your recovery and if your on the touch recovery then flash the old recovery.

Hi,
I'll update my Nexus from AOKP Milestone 4 to a JB rom (i'm choosing yet).
I know i'll have to wipe / data factory reset and my question is this :
I'll make a nandroid backup before the entire process, IF anyting goes wrong, when i restore the nandroind backup in clockwork, all my CONTACTS , SMS and CALL LOGS will be restored as well or i loose it because the wipe ?
Also, what application do you recommend to backup contacts / sms / call log ?
Thanks in advance

First question: yes. Call logs are also saved with a nandroid backup. When you restore from nandroid it is as if nothing ever happened.
Backup contacts ? As an android user you should have a Google account right ? If not synchronize your phone contacts with your Google account, like that you will never lose your contacts again, and after flashing a new ROM/doing a factory reset while you configure your phone just select the synchronize with my google account and all your contacts will be restored.
I've no idea how you can backup call logs. But to backup SMS's I can recommend "SMS Backup & restore" from the play store, a free and easy-to-use app.
I backup (and restore) SMS, MMS, and call logs with Titanium Backup. It works very well.

[Q] help with getting data after flashing a rom

Im a beginner to flashing roms. Started to root my galaxy s3 and was a success the first time around. After I backup my apps and datas, contacts etcs with titaniumbackup free version. Then I flashed the CM10 everything went smooth. Successfully restoring my apps but I cannot restore my data such as, contacts, texts msg, email accounts other than gmail. Anyone know the reason why this is happening or maybe use a different backup app? Any tips, suggestions would be helpful.
As of right now back to Tmobile stock-rooted jb 4.1
I recommend MyBackup Pro to do app and data backups - allows me to restore my data with the app.

glad this wasnt an IMEI issue lol, hope you find a solution
Restore the data from "contacts storage". Go to backup/restore find it in the list and tap it. Hit restore, data only.
For texts I use SMS backup & restore. TB didn't seem to work well.
Titanium Backup doesn't backup your SMS automatically. Go into Titanium Backup, press menu, and then hit backup data to XML. This will allow you to backup your call log, SMS/MMS, Bookmarks, and even your Wifi Access points.
