I always use dolphin, but been pretty happy with stock (well broswer+) on ics
My question is
a) can i set it to always use desktop version by default?
there was a way using about/debug or something in past os versions
b) if i visit cnn.com, set it to desktop, will it remember it even after a reboot or forever basically to always go to desktop version of cnn
Thanks !
I think you will have to wait until something like CM9 incorporates this because I don't think the browser remembers that you set it to desktop.
umm have you tried this https://market.android.com/details?...sMSwxLDEsImNvbS5iZWFuc29mdC5icm93c2VycGx1cyJd ? It's the ICS browser with many new functions like setting desktop version as default.
nevermind
answered my own question
type about:debug
hit settings, there will be a debug setting, in it
set user agent to desktop
this will be my new default browser (browser plus taht is)
dolphin will be secondary - it surely needs an update, its ui is uuugly now
I wish you didn't need the stock browser for browser + to work.

Ummm did you even read the ops post he already uses that app
If you go to setting then advanced then user agent and change it to desktop it will stick, at least that's what it does with browser+ on my prime

Anyone know how to get the browser out of mobile view for websites? I tried changing the settings in About:useragent but the settings don't save. Thanks
Install a diffrent browser.
I prefer miren browser. It has a option to apear as a desktop and loads everything you throw at it.

You can still keep the stock browser. Just have a second one for those times when you need to appear as a desktop. In the end though, the stock browser sucks
The stock browser is GPU accelerated, so is opera mobile. No other browser is GPU accelerated and sites like XDA absolutely CHUG on Miren/Dolphin........

I don't know if this is true or not. I looked around the market for a bit and found no info.
It has been awhile, but I tried all the major browsers. I found Dolphin, Opera, and most others to be sub par. Miren is the fastest one I have used. It is easily as fast as any other, or faster in my personal experience. Added to that, almost every flash based site I find myself visiting, works. Win in my book.
Opera is the fastest for me as well
According to anandtech the stock browser on the epic touch is optimized on the back end. It uses the same tricks that safari uses on the ipad 2. But, Samsung found a way to do it better. So technically the stock browser on the epic touch is way better than the stock browser on other Android phone. Anandtech got real technical with their in depth review. I suggest you check it out.
Note: I'm not 100% sure if the review I refer to was anandtech.
Weird. I've always done it through about:debug and then the settings menu but I just tried and the user agent option is missing. I can't imagine why they would have removed it entirely.

I tried some of the other browsers and the stock is just better. It is faster, more responsive, smoother with scrolling and zooming. I just wish there was a way to get it to go non-mobile!!!

Its not removed, you have to type about:useragent to change it. It will not stick though once you exit the browser.
This is a Touchwiz thing. G-Tab 10.1 had the same problem after TW update. There's a mod in the G-Tab forum that allows about:useragent desktop mode to stick. Hopefully we can get some love....
Ran a ton of site download tests and boat browser mini was fastest of all of them....including stock...(actually it virtually tied stock on the 15 site test I did).
However: NONE of the browsers display desktop pages on key sites (nytimes, engadget, gizmodo etc) regardless of the useragent setting on the Epic Touch.
Stupidass Sprint-Samsung.

Yes they do...if you set useragent to desktop. However, it reverts back to mobile when you close browser.
Yeah that's what I meant...close browser: have to keep entering. Nobody for me. Hoping for a good hack!

Im looking for a permanent fix for the STOCK browser to have the UAsetting saved in desktop mode. If you do "about:useragent" you can pick desktop, but as soon as a new window opens or you close the browser, you have to do it again. Previously ive had roms that had the option in the menu and would save to whatever you changed it. Is there any Browser.apk that is fixed with a native setting in the menu?
I am running ACS ICS 5.5 with samurai 1.2.6 kernel.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I'd have to say the easiest option would be to download a different/better browser from the market. Dolphin, for example, will easily and permanently achieve what your asking. Open Dolphin, press the Menu soft button, go to More, go down to Settings, then under Dolphin Settings at the top, set User Agent (first option I believe) to whatever you want (desktop in your case here).
As for the stock browser, I don't think anyone has bothered to modify it yet, too many other browsers out there that do so much more with fewer issues. Guess it's just a preference, someone will probably get to it at some point but for now, I'd just go with a different browser.

Yea thats not really an option for me. i hate all the other browsers. there were modified ones from ec05 on the ACS roms, just hoping someone makes one for ie22.
I realize there's still a lot of bugs they're working out in ICS but does anyone know if there's a stable browser yet with desktop mode? I prefer to use Dolphin HD & Skyfire but both seem to have issues freezing/crashing.
Just type "about:debug" in the stock browser's top URL bar,go into settings and select "desktop" under UA String.I have been using Dolphin Browser HD without any crashes so far since the last update that enabled ICS compatibility

I did try out the updated Dolphin and it doesn't freeze/crash like it used to... but at random times it will just close itself down. I submitted an email to the author letting them know so i'm hoping it will get fixed soon.
Skyfire's my favorite but on that one, after like 5 - 10 minutes it will suddenly freeze up & then give some pop up letting me know it's not responding and asking what i'd like to do(wait, close, etc) but before i can even select an option it shuts down by itself.
Stock browser is GREAT! I used to use Dolphin Mini on my Droid OG, but have found stock browser is fast/smooth/rock solid on the GNex...
As platinumandroid said above, type about:debug in the address bar, hit enter, then go into settings > debug > uastring > Desktop
There, all done.
I was browsing google reader on stock browser and my gnex rebooted, is this common or does the browser app usually crash only?
I prefer to use the stock browser, but i also use opera mobile. i haven't had a single problem with it, but it feels slower at rendering pages compared to the stock browser.

I thought it was supposed to be chrome, but im using a phone from Google IO stock unrooted with 4.1 and the regular browser is still installed. is this only for the nexus 7?
They aren't going to be changing the default browser. Future devices will come with Chrome as the default, but they aren't changing it for the Galaxy Nexus, they are leaving it to us to use Chrome if we want. I'm glad, I'll probably be sticking with the standard browser for now.
Updating to 4.1 doesn't remove your stock Browser. Could you imagine if Google just pushed an OTA that removed the Browser?
The Nexus 7 could come with just Chrome because it didn't ship with a Browser and get updated later.

Thank you. Just watched the unboxing of a nexus 7 and he said that in jelly bean chrome replaced the stock browser. It wasn't even installed. So I assumed it would be the same for gnex.

The GNex will still have the 'Browser' by default and will not come with Chrome stock.
Now hopefully we can all agree that Chrome on Android blows away the default browser -- without Flash. It'd kind of be nice if they pushed away from Flash unless you need to use it - like having Chrome be default from now on. (Sorry Adobe, I love you, but even the good kids don't always make it very far.)
For those of us who want to always use Chrome yet worry about Flash. Try Flashify (on the Play Store). You can now set Chrome to be your default browser, yet if something needs Flash, you can "share" the page, which will allow you to choose Flashify. Upon choosing Flashify, the exact page you were on will open up in the "Default Browser" with Flash support.
Hope this helps anyone. :fingers-crossed:

The stock browser destroys chrome in most ways, so I hope they improve chrome to match stock before making it the default browser.
I was shocked Google took chrome out of beta, and even more so when I heard that it was going to be the stock browser. I had just gone through crashes, lagging, just really not so good, and I uninstalled.
After all that, I still said why not, reinstalled when jb released, and I really think they did a great job with it. If you haven't tried it since it left beta, it's a different browser.

Does anybody know how to change the full screen mode?
I want full screen on to be the default setting. But unfortunately it always changes back to off after some time.
Anyone know the actual name of the stock browser by any chance?
Trying to debug an issue that only shows up on stock [loads fine on mobile FF & chrome] but trying to find info on 'stock browser' outputs so many generic results.....argh! plus i like using the javascript console & this doesn't seem supported on other other browsers.
I am using:
g-nexus 2
unrooted with 4.1
stock browser
any info much appreciated.
Does anyone know one that works with Jelly Bean? I cant seem to find one Boat Browser worked with ICS but now on JB it just doesnt work anymore...
And i know opera does this, but i really dislike how opera scrolls through pages and how it sometimes doesnt display stuff correctly. So i'd like to avoid that browser
I have checked any other browser trying to find one that reflow like Opera to no avail.
Opera is the only one with auto reflow when you aply/change zoom and this is the reason why I use it since old good WinMo days...
I can't understand browsing without this feature and realy don't find any problem with last Opera version.
Sorry
well i see i guess i have to make due with chrome (does pretty good text alignment so you dont have to zoom at all) until CM10 gets stable, in vanilla android text reflow works with pretty much with every browser...
I guess samsung is coming out with their own browser

I love how opera reflows and scrolls.
"Smartphone is no longer a phone"
Sorry to revive this old thread, but based on the above I've been using Opera just because of the text reflow. I really don't like its method for switching between tabs/windows, though. I much prefer the tabs at the top like most other tabbed browsers. So, I've found I keep trying all the others again. Well, I just tried the updated Boat Browser today and found they have now fixed it to do text reflow in JB. It works great! I really like it MUCH better than Opera now. So, any of the rest of you wanting text reflow, might want to give BB a fresh try.

So when you zoom in on text in Dolphin it is reflowing (wrapping) the enlarged text for you so you dont have to scroll left-right? Just want to ensure you mean the same thing because I'm on stock JB as well and Dolphin Browser sure isn't doing that reflow for me. I like Dolphin otherwise, so if it could do this I'd be happy with it, but unfortunatly it doesn't.
why you don´t use stock browser?
it has an option to do that what you want.
I am currently using boat browser without any issues. Try it, they might have fixed it in latest update.

How? There is an "autofit" in the stick browser, but that just zooms to the full page. I don't believe it does text reflow.

Yes, when I zoom in on text, the enlarged text is wrapped and I can read without having to pan left or right. I have Dolphin Browser v9.0.1 (with Jetpack v1.0.1).. The user agent is set to desktop.

Cool! I hadn't heard of Dolpin Jetpack before. It does NOT reflow with just Dolphin, but I just installed Jetpack and sure enough that makes it reflow. Thanks for suggesting that!
Hmm, now to decide which is my new favorite - Dolphin or Boat...

Nice hint - I can confirm that with the given versions it used to work (even with the user agent set to Android rather than Dolphin), but at least since Dolphin 9.2.0 with Jetpack 2.0 it does not work anymore.
This is the aosp browser with working text reflow
Just remove the stock browser then reboot and install this as a normal app (Not system app)
For the text to reflow zoom and then double tap on the text
latest firefox has text reflow feature

I tried it out, but this browser does not provide text reflow (on my Samsung Galaxy Note2 running Android 4.1.1) either

I can confirm that text reflow works with Boat Browser (after enabling the "Text wrapping" option in its settings).
In case anyone else also likes to revert Dolphin to version 9.0.3 and Jetpack 1.0.2 (the last versions with which I found reflow to work),
I attach the former as apk file, while attaching the latter apk file did not work for some technical reasons - even after zipping the file
to some 11.4 MB, I always get a strange error: "Your submission could not be processed because a security token was missing".
Thus I now offer both for download at http://David.von-Oheimb.de/perlen/Android/Apps.html
