[Q] Evo 4g inc, how do I get my RSA keys - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just signed up for sprint and ordered the EVO 4g, and I have scoured the forums for an answer to no avail (buried deep?).
How does one get their RSA keys?
I am going to load cm7 asap when I get the phone and I was reading up on how to do so, along with many threads on how RSA keys are getting "lost".
I didn't see any how-to's on how to back up RSA (not only related to cm7, which is why I' posting here, please don't bite my head off)
Any help will be appreciated!

You can also install amon ra recovery and when you make a nandroid backup you can choose to backup WiMAX keys
Sent from my Warm 3.5 Evo using XDA app

I would install amon RA or the amon RA style supersonic recovery and make a backup with only the wimax option checked and then store that backup somewhere safe like dropbox or on a flashdrive so in case your PC goes down you still have a copy safe and sound

Restore RSA Keys from backup

So here goes. I lost my RSA keys while flashing to a new rom and updating my radio, wimax, pri, etc. I didn't use the newest version of Clockwork, but instead 2.5.0.01 or something similar. I tried to update beforehand with Rom Manager, but it errored a few times. I did however backup my RSA keys to a text file using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887900
How can I restore them? I've searched and searched and read and searched and read. Tons of information on backing them up, ZERO information on using that backup that was said to be so important.
From what I understand, I should've backed up my wimax.img as well, but I don't think my old version of clockwork did that. Can that be replaced? Do the RSA keys just get added into the wimax.img somehow?
Any help would be greatly appreciated... especially since this is for a friends Evo, not mine!

I still don't understand why anyone would backup RSA Keys, use your own brains...
If you were wanting to test the WiMax feature for Cyanogen Mod ROM, I think you would backup your RSA Keys in case a trouble or problem occurs and it seems like most of the new players here on the EVO 4g phones are backing up their RSA Keys for no reason whatsoever... *Hence I have not backup my RSA Keys or done anything yet, and I still have a good phone thank god.
Ouch, maybe. I hope your issue gets resolved someway somehow, good luck, all I can say for you. ;/

I backed up my RSA keys because thats what i was told to do. Funny that on that entire RSA page it didn't say a word about backing up your wimax.img. Not to mention the OP has no clue how to restore the backups. Pretty much gave me a false sense of security. But I understand it's at my own risk.

+1 for that thought, most players of the EVO 4g playing around with the WiMax or RSA Keys should be extra careful.

Problem is, all I did was update his root with unrevoked3, wipe, flash a new rom, and update via the all in one radio/wimax/pri zip. Next thing I know 4g was gone and my rsa didn't check out correctly via adb. Been rooting/flashing evo's and epic's since day one and now all of a sudden we have this new problem? where was that problem before? i dont get it.
Why would anyone want to do a backup? To have it just incase something happens.
Too many people have lost their RSA keys from flashing. Why would you not want to have a backup? Once you lose your RSA keys, the only way (short of actually restoring the backup you made which no one has any idea how to do) is to return it to Sprint for a new phone.
And yes. I do agree it is pretty dumb that there is no restore method for the RSA backup.
So basically those RSA keys are useless?
Unrevoked has had a reputation for wiping 4g since the beginning. Did you ever do a backup with amon ra? If so you can use the wimax.img from that to restore the entire partition.

Never did an amon ra backup. Only a clockwork, and it was the older version of clockwork. The wimax.img would be it's own item inside the nandroid backup folder correct? It's not there.
Now, I know the RSA keys are matched with each phone, but how bout the WiMax image? Can I use another WiMax.img and just replace with the correct RSA keys?

I'm pretty sure there is much more to 4g then just the keys. You'll need your own certificates and everything. Toast our shinzul would be the ones to ask though, I'm not that familiar with the internal workings of 4g.

Kinda what I was afraid of. Not sure why people are pushing the backup of RSA keys if they're useless on their own. It's the wimax.img that is needed.
I'd like to complain and point fingers but I understand it's at my own risk.

My 4g keys and 4g mac addy are gone I still have wimax.img how do i restore?

So I flashed RLS 5 and flashed the radio/wimax combo first, during it i didn't know what the green down arrow was so i stupdily battery pulled. Dumb -- I know, but I didn't see that description of a normal radio flash anywhere. I know I had my 4g keys when I was running rls 4, how do i got about restoring my wimax.img? Any ideas? I of course did a nandroid before going to rls 5.
You just have to do a nandroid restore from one that still had the 4g keys in amons recovery.

you have no idea how lucky you are... lol
You should be able to just restore it like matt said or you could flash the image itself while in the recovery. It would probably be much easier just to restore though
So if I nandroid to the backup i did in RLS4 right before I did RLS5 that will include the old radio and should boot?

it will include the wimax radio, you will probably want to finish updating your radios properly though.
edit: it may not be a bad idea to run the RUU just to make sure everything is how it should be, as long as you have used unrevoked forever at some point you won't have to worry about rooting again

Please show me how!!! I somehow lost my 4G but have a wimax.img in one of my backups. I have tried a lot of different things and still the Wimax RSA key checker says Sorry, your WiMAX key is missing!
I tried this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10380361&postcount=1517 with no luck.
I tried adding the wimax.img to another Nandroid and edited the md5, not sure if I even did that correctly.

Rsa keys

So I have a hardware 002 evo, and I just checked and found out I don't have any rsa keys. This isn't the end of the world because I don't have 4g in my area. I was wondering what could have caused this problem? I thought it was only new evo's that could get this? My sisters hw 004 evo is fine, and I rooted the same way. Could it have been a recovery I flashed? Also, is there anything I can do to get them back? As far as I know (a quick search on here) you're sol unless you get a new phone. That's probably what I would do if I ever get 4g in my area (goddamnit). Any (helpful) comments would be appreciated

I've had it happen to me when I've been flashing many roms and all of the sudden they are gone. Question: Did you use amon ra recovery? If so you can back up your wimax rsa keys. Or plug your phone in goto sdcard>nandroid>pick a previous backup and then look for a wimax.img, that should contain your rsa keys. You could copy that from a previous nandroid and paste them in a newer backup and re-restore. Hope that helps... If you do not have a wimax.img file then yes you could have possibly lost your rsa keys, best thing is to unroot and return it to sprint and they should swap it out. Best of luck, your welcome.
Yea I don't know for how long my keys have been gone so I'm going to try the backup restore but my guess is that they have been gone for a while.

What recovery were you using if I may ask
I've used clockwork and amon ra, but I stray towards clockwork. I like the functionality with rom manager. I think if I manage to get a new evo I will switch to amon ra. I still don't think it was the recovery, I remember screwing up a radio flash and pulling my battery in the middle of it which is probably what did it.

Yes, that's exactly what caused it.
yea the most common way to screw up RSA keys is incorrectly or failed radio flashes. this will take them out most of the time. your lucky yuo didnt brick the phone at least. I have heard a ton of stories of people pulling battery during radio and that being all she wrote.
I believe clockwork now backs up wimax as well. this may not be of much help as it is a relatively newer additon to both recoverys i believe. yuor best bet may be to go to your oldest back up containing a wimax image and try restoring it. if still a no go then you are hurting.
Sprint may or may not help you depending on if they are dicks and can tell if you rooted or not. I wish you luck man

[Q] 4g broke and cant unroot HELP

Need help fixing 4g. Dont know when it stopped working but I have tried other roms and no luck. I have updated the radio then the profile and then the prl, I rebooted and then did the wimax and profile and prl and deleted some wimax file like one of the post said to do. No luck at all
I then tried to unroot to see if sprint would swap it out. When I try to unroot it tells me my battery is less then 30% and the other ruus say they dont see my phone. I dont know how I rooted it but I think it was with unrevoked not sure.
4g says scanning then connecting and back to scanning thats it. I use mikrom 4.61 right now

Did you check your RSA keys with the app from the Market?
Is your battery less than 30%? If it is, plug it in. If you want to unroot, just dl the s-on zip, flash that, then place the PC36IMG.zip on the root of your SD Card and go to hboot and let it update.
I got it unrooted. I did the unrevoke on patch and tried like 5 zip files and one of them worked. So its stock but I don't think 4g is working yet ill know tomorrow when I goto work.
Now what is this thing from the market for? Never mind I looked it up. So if my key is lost what do I do then? Send it in?
And no I didn't have any backups

You should have to buy a new phone for being a moron. This is why every post about rooting reminds you to make a backup. You messed up live with the consequences. Sorry that is harsh, but this is preventable and all to common. People are way to over their heads messing with their phones like this. Now you will try to get your phone replaced and because of people like yourself replacement warrenties get more strict and costs go up. Sorry for the rant it just really annoys me that people keep ruining their phones because they are clueless.

Me? No I didn't. Everyone says to do a backup but when I found my backup it didn't help. Even the stock Rom didn't help. So if someone can tell me how to backup the wimax key that may help next time. But what I see is once its gone its gone, not even a backup will help. One thing I did learn is that I'm staying with mik's Rom lol.
I rooted my evo and now I see a wimax backup in the recovery. I have never seen that in the backup of the recovery before. But many things have changed so could it be something they added in down the road? I rooted the phone when it first came out. But now I see what you are talking about the backup. Maybe next time someone can fill me in on that and not be such a ass.

It's easiest to do with Amon-Ra recovery, which you can find out about installing if you do a search for Amon-Ra 2.3. When using Ra, go to backup, and just check "Wimax." It'll backup just your wimax. Now, just go into your nandroid folder on your sd and add a "-wimax_key"to the end of the file name so you can remember it, and then put that backup in multiple safe places.
Are you sure it's your phone that is having the issue? Sprint could just have an outage. I've had some janky 4g coverage lately.
If it is your phone, what recovery and version are you running? All the new recoveries backup the Wimax keys. It's not true that "once it is gone, it's gone." I imagine you ran Unrevoked to root it which installs Clockworkmod recovery, so your original nandroid backup should have the keys backedup already. In that case you'd just need to wipe and then restore the nandroid. Upon doing that, it will also restore your Wimax key. DL the Wimax key checker from the market as previously mentioned and verify your RSA (Wimax) key is present. You are good to go if so.

Thanks for the info. It was the phone for sure and I must have had the very first recovery version because I never seen the wimax backup before. Now on my new phone I see the wimax and other things I can backup. So on this one I checked them all and did my backup So that must be why the backup I found didnt help me. I never thought about checking to see if the recovery had updates.

Wimax keys lost question, RA backup

Somewhere along the lines, I lost my wimax keys and only realized it when I was in an area that actually has 4g (my hometown doesn't). I tried Flashing one my number of backups created in Amon 2.3 thinking I may have backed up the Wimax, but no luck, none of them had the backup. At one point, I remembered creating a backup using Clockwork, not sure which method. I found the backup in a Clockwork folder on my sd card and see there is a wimax image file that is over 12,000 kb in size. I was stoked thinking my keys were found! However, I recovered that ROM backup image through Rom Manager but Wimax checker says my keys are still missing?? Question is, if Clockwork created the wimax image, shouldn't the keys be there when I recover that backup? Is there anyway to see if that wimax image contains the keys? Someone please tell me there is hope! I have a feeling 4g will be coming to my area soon and don't want to have to lie to Sprint to get a new phone
I think if you have the actual key, there is a manual way to program them back into the device. Do you have the original key somewhere (AKA on box, etc.)
Follow the instructions here to check your wimax keys.
Ok, I looked manually at my sd card as well and see one of my nandroid backups also contains a wimax.img, but this one is only just over 2,000 kb. In both cases, restoring those backups didn't work. I will try the method you listed to see what I get. Should I do it from one of those images I backed up?
hmm.. curious... what version CWM are you using?
i'm thinking you might have to revert back to an older version like 2.6 or below to get it to work.

I followed the instructions listed and yielded results as they did. I got a firmware version and it listed my mac address. Now what? It says OK next to everything and doesn't show any signs of error. My Wimax tag passes, it reads the wimax partition ok,etc. says my firmware version is R4623-evo-kddi. I am wondering though, would my backups that have the wimax.img not be recover that portion since I have upgraded my wimax radio since those backups were made?? Perhaps downgrading my wimax radio to an earlier version would correct it? Help please!!!

Easy fix
Get your wimax.img the one that's larger, put it in the root of your sdcard, open terminal ( get one if you don't have it) gain root permission by typing su
Then type
flash_image wimax /sdcard/wimax.img
Then reboot
Ok, i tried this from terminal and it returned the following error:
mtd: not writing bad block at 0x00260000.
So, what the hell does that mean? A bad image or a bad part of my sd card? Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it!
You have a bad memory block in your WiMAX partition,
3 options
First, continue to flash the img in terminal until success.
Second, give up and accept defeat understanding no mo fo gee.
Third, get another Evo
Ok, so for ****s and giggles, I did the said method only this time with the smaller 2000 kb wimax.img. It flashed fine, I rebooted, and now wimax keychecker says my key is there!! I wont be in a 4g area until next week to verify, but it should work now, correct? When I turn the 4g radio on, it says turning on and then scanning! Thanks for all the help, its much appreciated!
Sent from my Evo, with renewed 4g!
If key checker said good, your golden
so, let me get this straight. If I never nandroid backed up my phone w/ stock rom on it, shot a 3g only rom, my 4g wimax key could be gone and I'll never be able to get 4G again?
question still stands, but I found the backup the wimax rsa key thread and it seems by phone had its keys still intact
Flashing a 3g only Rom doesn't wipe your keys, making a backup then will still back them up.
OK, so tonight I was in Minneapolis and tried to connect to 4g but couldn't. I verified my wimax keys are in place but still won't connect. It says turning on, then scanning, then connecting to Sprint, tries to connect but then back to scanning, connecting to sprint, over and over. I updated profile and prl and tried again, but still won't connect. What's next to check?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Just to be clear, keychecker says my wimax keys are present, I have verified my mac address is correct and the 4g radio turns on. I am running Fresh Rom 3.5 and have flashed the most recent wimax radio, updated profile and prl. Any ideas? Please help!
