WiFi stays on in Stand By with Cellular Data Off - Windows Phone 7 General

This week I noticed something really great... Normally I charge my phone during the night, but the other day I charged during the day and it was at 75% when I was going to sleep so to save battery I turned off Cellular Data but left WiFi on (I knew it would turn off in stand by).. I forgot battery saver LOL...
But in the morning my phone was all up to date, Weather, News, Emails.. Everyting...
The past days I've been doing the same and I noticed that as long as cellular data is off.. If I lock the phone with the WiFi connected it stays on and connected, if it's not connected or the router restarts during the night it doesn't connect.. Nice..
I'm using Omnia 7 with 8107 update...

Yeah... Tested it just after reading your post.. Wifi stays on

No
Wifi stays on only if the phone is charging.

yeah it stays only on if charging and 1/2h after you see your lockscreen before you go to sleep. i get sometimes email but all they arrive only 1/2 after the lockscreen, not during the night. and at the morning i get all the other emails, that arrived 1h after the lockscreen during last night...

I've been confused for 1.5 years what people mean by WiFi turns off with phone locked. If I start a download a file and shut the screen off it still downloaded it. When I plugged my phone in at night, all the things I selected to sync on my PC were on my phone in the morning. Are people just not setting up ' Wireless Sync ' via Zune phone settings? 10 minutes after my phone is on charger if I'm at the PC a message pops up showing a connection to my phone, and it syncs with Zune.
I'm sure I must be overlooking something, but what other reasons do we need the WiFi to work with the phone sleeping?

Even if we don't need WiFi to work with the phone sleeping, but every time I unlocked the lockscreen, it will reconnect to WiFi for seconds, I have to wait a moment till I use my WiFi again, it's really inconvenient, and I cannot keep the phone charging all the day. IOS and Android have no such problem. I really think this is someting need to be improved.

I agree.... I think it's done this way to save the battery.

Wifi Setting switching itself off?

Hey,
I've noticed my wifi keeps getting set to "off" seemingly at random. It works fine when it's on, however a few times a day, I'd find that the wifi switched itself off (even while in range of a working wifi signal, say even if left at home on a table all day) and I'd have to reenable it via the communications settings screen.
It's somewhat annoying and chews up my mobile internet when I don't noticed wifi's off.
Anyone else have a fix/noticed this?
Thanks !
It usually goes off when the device enters standby. Have a look into this thread for how to keep it on in standby mode. Beware that this might eat your battery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524490

Ah I read that but I think you misunderstand what I meant, I know it goes off during standby, however when it comes out of standby, WiFi should automatically renable itself, which it does - sometimes.
I believe I figured out what the problem is, whenever I plug the TP2 into my PC, it uses my PC's net connection(?) and disables WiFi. When I remove the phone form the PC, it doesnt restart Wifi.
Any fix on that?

Battery Savings - WiFi Sleep Policy

Edit: Use at your own risk, it worked for me but people seem to be saying it's not true.
I figured I would share this tip because it worked so well for me. When I first got the Nexus and connected it to my WiFi, the battery was draining at an absurd rate, even at idle. I want to use WiFi because we don't have LTE out here, so turning it on and off was a pain. Then I remembered the Sleep Policy, and there it was set to keep the WiFi on, even during sleep. I'm assuming Verizon did this to help reduce congestion on their network and save them money. After changing this to "only when plugged in" my battery graph at idle flatlined.
Hopefully it will help someone else!
Steps:
1. Settings
2. Wifi
3. Menu -> Advanced
4. Keep WiFi on during sleep
5. Pick an option best for you. I chose Only when plugged in.
From what I have read, keep wifi on during sleep was always the most power efficient. Maybe you have a weak wifi signal?
I'd like to hear what other people have to say on this one.
That's definitely interesting to hear. I'm usually one floor away from my wireless-N router which yields 3 or 4 out of 4 bars consistently. I guess I'll have to see if this works for anyone else then.
This is wrong.
You should set it to Always.
http://www.androidcentral.com/android-101-save-battery-keeping-wifi-alive
Because initiating wifi connection every time you turn on your phone will consume more power.

Well it significantly reduced my idle battery use (like at night), so I'll put a warning at the top but I'll keep mine the same.
I guess you haven't turned on the mobile data cause if you do, then this consumes more power than wifi for sure.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Generally, radio management on the Nexus sucks. I want a setting where if it's in standby, ALL RADIOS ARE OFF except for base phone and text messaging. So this helps a little.
Sure, it uses more power initially to turn whatever on, but no where near as much if you don't use your phone for hours, and don't constantly need to be in sync with everything (like when you're at a computer all day, and you can check your gmail, yahoo mail, have gchat and skype and whatever).
I'd even like a setting policy which only turns on data or wifi when you have an app open that uses them.
I may be using my "phone" (my wife said about her Stratosphere, "I forgot I could use this thing as a phone") differently than most people with smartphones. I need it to be my computer and social device when I'm away from a computer, and only when I take it out of my pocket and turn it on.

Same here, with WLAN on my Nexus Prime drops about 6% over night.
Interestingly I just lost about 10% in 2 hours with the phone in stand-by but then I remembered I had to change my IP ~7 times in this time frame which likely caused a lot of WLAN activity and used up quite some energy.

wifi goes sleep even setting policy to "Always On"

I have set the Wifi policy to "Always on".
Many times (but not every time) when my One X goes into sleep mode, all data connections don't work. I notice it because I feel so strange there is no notification from Whatsapp and Line as usual. So, I press the power button and see no data connection at all. After a few second, 3G data connection appears but no wifi. Wifi then replaces 3G a few second later.
It usually happens and I feel so annoyed as I lost communication with my colleagues when One X is sleeping.
Is there somewhere in "Setting" that can override the "Always on" in Wifi policy? If I miss it, please let me know.
I feel very disappionted with my One X as it contains a lot of bugs.

It's happening to me too, it's very frustrating because when turned on it show as connected while it's false.. and i'm unable to browse/etc without re enabling wifi manually.
Same issue on the One S. This is most likely a driver related problem or something. I think the next firmware update should fix this, but if anyone of you can provide a hotfix or something I wouldn't be sad
Getting the exact same problem.
I have not noticed this so far.
same problem with wifi....and in the nights my Data also gets switched off after sometime of inactivity...couldnt find any setting related to that....do any of you know any hidden setting for it?
Yeah it happening to me as well. It could be kernel related.
Same Here
Mine is opposite, I want it to sleep on screen off but it keeps reverting to always on. Quite frustrating as it is the major cause of my battery loss

I just noticed this, too. Really annoying when you suddenly stop getting any notifications for E-Mails etc.
This is also not fixed in 1.28 :/.
I seem to only have this during the night hours, though. Like there is some sort of "Quiet Hours"-function but they forgot to put it in the settings >_<
I think this is the special Sleep Mode kicking in, and the WiFi Always-On is overridden by it.
When I turn the screen off, I can still ping my One X over the network. However, after some time (maybe 5-10 mins) it no longer responds and has dropped its WiFi connection.
The Always-On WiFi option has only ever applied to when the screen is off. The sleep mode thing is new and not related to android itself - an HTC hardware thing by the look of it.
Maybe it's fixable in the driver software, but I believe the "WiFi always on" function is behaving correctly - it's the new sleep state that is breaking it.
I could be wrong, but that's what it looks like.
If someone has the time, try setting up a PC to continuously ping the One X and see if it keeps it from going in to sleep mode.

Hello Dave,
Your analysis is quite impressive,
I also started dealing with this from "Special Sleep Mode" perspective.
I have got the FOTA, find data in my signature, and still suffering from the same issue.
To summarize my findings let me brief it:
When I first got the update, the problem seemed to be solved
I kept connected to my home WiFi router for several hours and got notifications from Whatsapp and Twitter
I thought the problem was solved and the bug was fixed, as I kept seeing my OneX on the WiFi Client on my router's managing interface on my PC
I shut down my phone, WiFi was on, and turn it back on
WiFi kicked in and connected with no problems,
An hour after, I sensed something wasn't good, notifications were silenced
I unlocked my phone and checked the status bar to find there were no DATA connections at all, nothing, no WIFi no Mobile Data, the usual bug
Now I started to think,
I Have got this problem after a full shut down, and at a battery below 15%
One thing to add,
I turned my phone off with WiFi enabled and when turned it on WiFi kicked in.
Now I am monitoring on the following basis.
I clicked all WiFi hot spots previously saved on my OneX and chose to "FORGET"
Connected to my preferred hotspot
Monitoring the WIFI, with battery over 15%, seems to be very healthy, more than an hour on sleep mode, and WiFi is on, uninterrupted and VERY CONNECTED
I will keep monitoring the behaviour till battery fall under 15% and will report back
I'll make sure to turn off WiFi before shutting down my phone if I have to, this is to eleminate the other variable and keep concentarting on one variable "Battery percentage"
A point to add:
On my previous Gingerbread SensationXE, there was an option on Settings> Battery to control phone's behavior and stop background sync and other activities when battery fall below a pre-defined percentage.
Default was 15%
I can't find this option on my One X, IceCream Sandwich
That's why I started to analyse the problem from the perspective of "Special Sleep Mode - Below 15%" bahaviour.
I will report back as soon as I have results.
Thank you
Update:
Started to experience same issue when battery falls below 50%.
All DATA gone down, no WiFI and no Mobile Data.
Charged my phone to 73%, "Forget" all WiFi network.
WiFi off
Monitoring Mobile Data only.
Mobile data gone down after 30 minutes sleep mode, 73% battery
Connecting to WiFi, and started monitoring WiFi
WiFi + Mobile Data gone down after 30 minutes.
Power down phone, and then on, 73% Battery, WiFi off
Monitoring Mobile Data only.
Failed, and disconnected
Failure
I've done a Factory Reset !!!
Update:
No problems on WiFi, nor Mobile data whatsoever for the whole day until battery falls below 10% !!!
WiFi disconnected after exactly 15 minutes, Mobile data kicks in, then disconnected as well !!!
I turn on the screen after 20 minutes to find NO DATA CONNECTION of any kind.
Mobile data kicks in, WiFi replaces mobile data, and start receiving all data dependent notifications!!!
I have the same problem, wifi is turned off sometimes when screen is locked.

Hello Pabson,
Thanks for sharing.
Would you provide more information about your phone's software number, your location (Region, not specific).
Thanks again.
Same here, tried several roms and the same happens with every ROM out there. What is more, I cannot connect to WIFI at work (WPA PSK) but I can connect perfectly to my home WIFI network.
Hopefully this is not a hardware fault and will be fixed.

If it happens on every single rom you you installed, then apparently this is a hardware fault.
What "Base" do the Roms, you installed, created on?!
I mean based on what version of RUU?
same problem here.
I mis the "power saving mode" options like in android 2.3
It might idd have something to do with power savings mode kicking in.

Potential Glitch Regarding Battery

My HTC 10 has been working great overall, but I've experienced an issue that has happened 3 times now and want to let you all about it as well as report it to HTC.
Typically at night I charge up my phone, unplug it, and then boot it off before bed. There were a few times when the phone wasn't completely charged and I did the following:
1. Turned off the phone
2. Plugged in the charger while it was in the shut-down process.
3. Let it charge to 100% and then unplugged it and went to bed.
The next morning, when I booted the phone, the battery dropped to 70% (even though the phone was technically off).
I attached a screenshot of the odd gap in my battery history as well.
Additionally, that same day, I noticed that the sync settings for my Google Accounts had all randomly changed. Some of my Gmail accounts were no longer set to sync, some Google calendar accounts that had syncing disabled were now enabled, etc.
This same ordeal has happened at three different times over the past few months.
Has anyone else experienced this?

the drain happens drastically if your wifi is on set to scan even when its turned off...
but the Op's drained while the device was off thats strange... might want to take it a service center than experimenting further

Yes! I, too, have had this same issue: charge to 100%, power off phone for the night, phone is approx. 70% when I power it on in the am.
This is inexplicable to me. How can a battery drain when the phone is off?
I have no issues if I charge my phone to 100% and it operates normally throughout the day. I also have not noticed an issue with other settings being affected.
Let us know what HTC suggests; if this is a warranty thing, I want to know. Cheers.

I posted this in another thread but I optimized my phone settings the moment I got it. Turned off Wi-Fi notifications, turned off set to scan for Wi-Fi, turned off vibration feedback for touch screen, modified a majority of my app permissions to deny location, etc. All of these settings affect battery life while the phone is on and when powering down/powering up. Maybe you already did these things but it helped me immensely. I go into my office at work at 4am, don't get home til 3pm and Im still rocking 50 - 60% battery life with moderate use.

Question A52s 15% battery drain overnight - 0 screen on time, no apps used

Hi, I bought 2 same devices (A52s 5G) for my parents. Problem is with just 1 device (they are set up absolutely the same). The problem is with overnight battery drain. I suspect WiFi is the soruce of the problem, because our WiFi router is set to power of Wifi transmission overnight for 6 hours and turn it on automatically in the morning. The problem is - if I don´t turn WiFi off on the affected device, it eats up 15 percent in 6 hours. On the second device there´s no such problem. WiFi could stay on and in the morning the percentage is down by 1-2 % which I think is perfectly normal since the device is still powered on. Percentage graph shows absolutely nothing in app consumption. For example i fully charge it in the evening and in the morning there is 85 % battery left and battery stats shows screen on: 0 minutes, screen off: 8 hours, no apps used. I think the affected device has problem with searching for WiFi and it want to connect all the time to the router? I would really appreciate your suggestions . Thanks
I'd wipe cache then run device care/optimize.
At night try this. Turn off Wifi, Location. and Bluetooth if enabled along with data.. I do this every night before bed.. When I wake up in the morning i usually have 97% left if it is not on the charger.. When I take it off, and go to work with 100%. It will stay at 100% for up to 3-4 hrs if I leave all mentioned still off.

Yes, if I turn WiFi off, it loses just about 2 percent at night. But if WiFi stays on (parents forget to turn it off in the evening, you know) and it can't connect because my router powers off automatically night, it loses 15 percent, which I think is crazy, isn't it? Can you please try this situation? Would be really grateful

Something is quite tricky here , you have 2 same phones with same identical settings and one of them loose over night lot of battery ?
In my humble opinion if you're sure about it there can be only a faulty phone

This night I put both phones next to each other, same scenario, before going to bed at 100%. This morning one shows 86 and second one shows 87 percent. Battery stats shows nothing used as usual. So it is problem of both phones, new discovery
Ok , I understand ... There are several settings (look for it) which can save battery over night . 15% battery drain overnight is overall quite too much . My phone , debloated , set with right choices , with moderate use have enough battery for almost 3 days .
What does it mean right choices? Phones are debloated, set with right choices, only thing if parents forget turn off WiFi before bed, in the morning they have 15 percent less battery. So WiFi searching must be culprit. Because WiFi router shuts itself down automatically in the evening. Can someone please confirm that if you leave WiFi ON in phone and turn WiFi router OFF, if you have that much battery drain overnight? Keep everything else off in phone, except WiFi. Thank you
Any recommended debloat/setting guides for the newcomers?
My phone started the same few days ago. I just updtated everything now, will wipe cache, turn off wifi and see what it does overnight.
Turn off 5G, keep only 4G/LTE. This improved my battery life a lot.
I don't have this device so I'm not sure if this works, but Wi-Fi advanced settings should have an option to turn off automatic scanning for Wi-Fi. Try turning that off
I always find always on display feature draining my battery excessively. Try turning it off and see if theres a difference

Always on display is activated by default (default settings is "Tap to show") Unless you turn it off manually on the settings, it still is always on and drains that much battery as it needs to be always ready to be tapped. Not using it and not seeing Always on display text means it is off in the settings

As I said, always on display is turned OFF in both devices. WiFi is the problem, when it´s turned off in phone, it drains 1 percent (max.) at night, when forget to turn WiFi OFF, it drains 15 percent overnight, which I think is crazy.

That could be a problem in the conception of your apartment or your house and the material or furniture in between one of the phone and the wifi router. I have got such a problem but with bluetooth headset when going to the water closet (interference issue) in a temporary apartment when my main one has burnt... ^^ lol
So try to switch both phones at least once and see if the problem persists...

It has nothing to do with signal, if phone is connected all night (router stay ON), there is no drain. But when I turn router off (which I want to) and forget to turn WiFi OFF in phone, it drains 15 percent overnight. On both A52s phones. On my S21 Ultra there is zero drain overnight, I can calmly leave WiFi on and turn router off.
