Is it just me that gets this? I hold the power on button, thereafter it vibrates and it takes about 5 seconds I think until it displays anything on screen. Is this normal?

It does the same thing for me... Never really though anything of it. The screen diming might be due to auto screen brightness option, which is fixed in 2.3.4. There is also a disbale auto brightness app for sale in the market if you dont wanna do the firmware update. It drove me nuts waiting for 2.3.4...

This is a stock setting from Sony Ericsson to save power. This may be removed, after root, with a 3rd party app.

My screen lags when R button and Volume up are held then i press the screen (buzzes once), for 5-10 seconds, my phone freezes then it buzzes twice and is back to normal
My phone also outputs a bugreport txt each and every time this occurs, here's the most recent one (stupid mediafire wont let me upload it unzipped)
Never mind, figured out that it's simply a shortcut to create the file

Mine does this too, i was never too concerned with it, i just assumed, with the larger capacity, it just too longer to load up. It only takes a few seconds, not bad in my opinion.

This was already answered, but just to reemphasize, it can be disabled in your settings menu, however doing so, will leave the screen constantly at whatever level you choose, so expect some additional battery drain.
anyone else's phone slow in doing any thing internet based? My internet is quite slow when not connected to wifi as is market, it is even slower than my old San Francisco. Anyone know why this could be? I have full bars of connection and would like an explanation, thanks!

thanks for the advice... i tryed but its not it.. i know what u mean were it can go from light to dark.. but this is a very quick flicker of the screen.
could this be kernel related or even hard ware... im gonna try stock kernel.. im using faux 009.. this didnt happen on the 003 kernel...
faux says not all chips are created equal...just a guess... id hate to return for a refurb phone.. when this is my only problem...
time will tell... i was just wondering if anyone gets this very quick flicker.. not a shift in brightness......

I rarely get them. Once in a while if I am switching from an apps to home screen via home button . I see the main apps on the home screen flicker very quickly once.
I think it started happening when I installed the wicked rom red. Before I was full stock . Matter of fact while typing this message I seen it flicker twice.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
If you are in your 14 day period, I would exchange the phone.
This seems like a hardware issue, not a software one.
If the flicker continues then it will only get worse.
I just discovered the Quick Glance function where you wave your hand over an off screen and the screen turns on to show you some notifications.
I love it.
Only problem is that it's super slow on my phone. Average screen on time is about 5 seconds so it's much easier and faster to just hit a button to turn on the phone.
Is this function slow on everyone's phone? I am using apex launcher and swift key if it matters.

I've noticed it can be reasonably responsive after a reboot. But right now at my desk, its taking about 2 seconds to come on.
Mine takes several seconds too. I turned it off for that reason plus it uses the proximity sensor at all times. Go into a dark room and look at the phone, you'll notice a dull red glow from the prox sensor. I didn't like what that must be doing to my battery especially since the sensors don't show up in the battery stats so that you can see exactly how much it's using.
Yep, it's really slow for me too. Half the time I wonder if I swiped the sensor properly or not. Turned it off.

I see the same battery life with it on or off. 5-6 hours screen on time depending on what I'm doing and what's running in the back ground. And yes mine takes 2 seconds to come on too which doesn't bother me at all.

Maybe you not waving your hand right. I know that sound stupid but after a while playing with it when I first got the phone it took a while for me to learn how to actually get it to work, you wave your hand a distance away from the screen. If you do it to close it won't come on.

Dont know what else to call it really but I know this is happening with all of our devices.. which is when the screen times out and u press home to wake it up it takes u back to default homescreen. The sgs3 doesnt react that way and ive had to get used to hitting the power button instead. Any ideas? This would be amazing and greatfully appreciated.

I can't replicate this issue. I let my screen timeout and pressed the home button and it simply turned the screen back on to where I left it.

I've had it happen. You press he home button immediately after the screen goes black, and it wakes the screen up, but also takes out of what ever you are in and takes you to the home page. I've retrained myself not to go for the home button, but the power button.

Are you using stock LEAK ?
I think this is a Jellybean 4.1 issue. My Note 2 has the same problem, but my wife's Galaxy S3 didn't when she was on ICS. Last week the phone updated to JB and now the problem exists.
This is definitely related to Jelly bean but I'm not sure if it is strictly a Touchwiz Jelly bean issue. It happens when I removed S Voice from the home button double press. It happens on the S3 and when my Note II comes in I bet it will happen on there too.
There are a lot of people that noticed it and I even saw someone open an issue with Google, although I'm not sure it is entirely a Google issue.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39326
The last line is the issue maybe.
"I want the single tap to be more snappy - for that I must disable s voice, but when I do it this bug raises its head. "
Do you guys have s voice disabled on the home button to save that lag time?
I disabled the s voice on the home button but still have the lag.

Hi there. Before update to JB on my S3, when i do my readings on the phone, screen blackout, press the HOME button, the screen will come back up.
Now, screen blackout, press HOME button, screen come back up but the app or browser that I'm using will close down instead of just led the screen on (where the app still there)
Anyone has a way to fix this? Keep pressing on the POWER button to light up the screen is not as Convenient as by using the HOME button.
Thank you.

Glad it's not just me. This has been driving me bonkers ever since I updated. It's really the only complaint I have about the official 4.1.1. ROM right now. Would love to hear some suggestions on how to fix. In the meantime, I've been trying to train myself to use the side power button for screen on action.
Is there anyway that we can make suggestions on this matter?
It bugs me when I read on the bed at night.

this has been happening on jelly bean ROMs (not cm tho) ever since the leas came out - at least for me anyways. very irritating sometimes but yes, you are not the only one.
Bump. No one else is annoyed by this but us or has any idea for a fix?
Only 'fix' is to use smart stay when theres enough light. Otherwise increase your screen on time to one min. I had to increase my time since I use it at night so often.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
An easy fix is just to use your power button as soon as the screen blacks out.
It wakes the screen back up without closing down the current app your in... I just tested it out and it works, doesn't lock the phone either.
But if you don't wanna use the power button then I suggest you increase your screen time out to one minute or more if you don't want the screen blacking out fast.

Does it work in the dark when reading in bed like the OP asked? My comment was criticism of why they coded it this way,for what purpose?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Its really just doing what its supposed to before the device locks. I guess they expected smart stay to take care of it.
If you keep double press home to open svoice enabled it should also stop this from happening.

Bingo. This is the answer. I'd much rather have the slight lag in returning to the home screen than lose the ability to turn the screen back on with the home key. Thanks!
I dont know if anyone is facing the same problem I have now, my n2 screen wont turn off by itself. I have set the timer on 15secs, smart stay disable. It juz wont turn off when idle. And if its fully charged, it will stay up all night as well.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Does it relate to my Omega rom or Redpill kernel?
Thanks

I dun have a fix to this problem but I have a tasker profile that turns the screen off when battery is fully charged. You might want to try that as an interim.

do you have the power option to stay on whilst charging?
It's not smart stay, not the screen rotate with your head thingy nor the developer option that keeps the screen on while the device is being charged. I turned all that off. This is clearly a big that I've had from 4.1.1. Can't get rid of it. Annoyance at its peak.

Are you saying that the screen just won't turn off, or that it turns itself on and then won't turn off?
If it's the first, my guess is an app which prevents the screen from turning off, didn't release its lock after being shut down. This can happen with some games, I've seen it with angry birds and jetpack joyride, titanium backup has done it too. Try to empty ram and kill processes, and/or reboot, though I would guess you might have tried that already.

If doesn't turn on on its own. When the bug kicks in, the screen doesn't go off if it's manually turned on or If a missed call or message is left unattended. Hope you got that. But yes, I can turn off the screen manually but doing that every time is ridiculously annoying. The bad thing is I cannot know if the bug is active or not without actually watching my screen till the timeout. Annoying bug! I've tried various things and I do not know what's causing this. I'm on stock rom, never rooted.
