So when I got my Nexus I had great 4G at work, i'd use wifi tether and tether my tablet all day with no issues, although I never did anything that required much data.
These last few days I can only get 3G at work, but I can get 4G in the parking lot. I don't understand why all of a sudden my signal has deteriorated. I don't know if VZW is able to see I used a large amount of data in one location and force 3G to that particular area? I've tried flashing new roms etc but nothing works, I had 4G today up until I entered the building, but just last week I could sit at my desk all day with full 4G
My first guess would be that it is an issue with the Verizon tower you were getting 4G from before. You could call them and ask if they are having any problems in your area. You might be getting a 4G signal from a tower further away when you go outside.
I know you can force 3G to save battery, but is it possible to force 4G and no CDMA? Im wondering if I can force it to connect to a tower.
Or is it possible to rescan for towers or something? I always download new roms and stuff and it sucks on 3G =\
Call Verizon and ask? Or maybe they have like a service-status homepage you can check.
Like maybe that is better than asking here, since this place is like about the Nexus and not a telecom provider.
Or should all people across the world SPAM this place with new threads every time their thousands of different cell-service providers have random local outages? Would that be tolerated?
Why should Verizon-customers be excempt?
Pull the battery, take the SIM card out, and then power up the phone. It should ask you for a SIM. Now power off and insert the SIM and power back up. See if it helps!!

If you did that, you'd get no voice, just data. Wouldn't want that.

You can update your PRL.
Seriously though, call in and ask if they're having network issues in your area. If you've done nothing to your phone and it had 4G in an area consistently before and it doesn't now, the problem probably isn't on your end. It'll take 5min to call in and ask. Hell of a lot quicker than troubleshooting problems on your phone that might not exist.
Try updating to the latest bootloader and radio for 4.03
Verizon is the largest carrier in the United States, not just one of millions of carriers across the globe. A lot of topics here correspond to the LTE version so you should expect topics about what is going on with them. Besides, this is GENERAL forum. Can post and ask about anything remotely related to the Galaxy Nexus, GSM or LTE version.
Seriously, if you aren't a moderator, you shouldn't be trying to police the forum. Keep your day job.

I've cleaned this thread also.
Once again, consider this a fair warning. If you have nothing to say relative to the question asked, move along and stop the childish bickering.
If you lost service only in your building it most likely has nothing to do with your phone and is cell-tower related.

Hey everyone!
I was wondering if anyone else is having the problem where if you toggled your 4g to turn it off, you would lose all data entirely? I currently running winner's kang-cm9 and when I try to turn off 4g through the toggle or through the settings, I only get gray signal bars. I'm assuming I should still have 3g after turning off 4g. Is this someone that everyone is experience or is it my phone?
I'm having a similar issue (stock ROM). I notice it every morning when I leave for work. I leave my place and wifi disconnects (lack of signal). Since I don't have LTE outside, it seems like it try's over and over to obtain LTE signal. LTE is spotty in my area, so it will go in and out. However, 3G sometimes fails to connect and I sit there without any signal. It's incredibly frustrating...
Last night I just flashed to Apex ROM/Kernel. This morning I waited for my car to warm up a little bit and by the time i plugged in my phone, it had a 3g connection. I will be continuing to look out for this, but I have been able to replicate the issue in my first paragraph over and over again... something is definitely wrong with the radio on our phone (CDMA).
Oh that happens to me a lot too because I get bad 4g in my area so a lot of times when its switching back and forth I lose data for a while.
The problem I'm having is that I would try to disable LTE/4g to save battery but would end up losing all data (Only calls and text work). On my friends thunderbolt he was able to disable 4g and retain his 3g data. As for me, I lose all data and I have to restart to regain data again when I try to disable 4g data

That's an interesting point. I was wondering how the other LTE VZ phones handled this situation... I think VZ/Google needs to address this in a fix ASAP.
I work in a largish company in Seattle area. We have ~5000 engineers working in the area and I posted the same question since my Verizon GNexus would completely lose all mobile data for hours at a time every 3-4 days. From what the results I got, they said that in our area they are all seeing those problems and they had different devices. I got responses from OG Droid, Droid Charge, GNexus, DroidX2, Thunderbolt.
I've been seriously considering returning my phone since this is clearly a verizon data network issue which is not limited to LTE as their press releases would have you believe.

Well see, i can get data if i toggle airplane mode or cdma to cdma/LTE. it takes me forcing the phone to start looking for 3g instead of LTE.
Very serious issue. Slow reconnects on a toggle that should be unobtrusive between 4g-3g. I suffer from the same issue.
What's worse. The reception in general is terrible. And dropping from 4g to 3g ..the phone either never reestablishes 4g or take.....a. VERY long time. Like, 10-15 minutes. Unbelievable
I'm trying desperately to get google to be aware of this and I'm PRAYYYIINNGG this is a software issue.
P.s this is my third nexus... so I believe this is everyone

Yep... I have two other friends with this issue as well. I just got off the phone with Verizon, and they acknowledged the data connectivity issues... they said an update is in the works and is tentatively sometime Jan/February.... for the record, i'm on 4.0.3 (axi0m rom); not that it should matter ...
What I'm seeing is similar but sounds like it might be slightly different. I have a thread on it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21352288
I'm not sure if what I'm describing there is "normal" and the thing they are working on an update to address or if I have a bad radio/phone. Any thoughts?
In my case, it will go: 4G->no_data->4G in the span of about 30 seconds or so. The 4G indicator will still show for a few seconds but I'll get "no connection" kind of messages. Then I get just a solid gray triangle. About 30 seconds later, I see the bars, then the 4G indicator, then the bars turn blue.
Anyone else seeing this? This happened to the phone before this which I swapped due to this problem. What are the chances I got 2 bad ones in a row? Or is it just a similar issue to what you all are describing?
Hello, I am new to this forum and I have a few questions.
My phone is on Sprint, as of November 2011 I switch to a smartphone and have nothing but trouble. Not the phone, but with sprint.
The problem is that inside of my office, I have no signal. Only with Sprint though, all other providers has a good signal here.
This weekend I found out an app called netmonitor, so I check it out today while at my office and it looks like my phone is bouncing off towers all over the place trying to find a signal.
If I walk out the door, I have a strong signal and it gives an address.
I am wondering if there is any way that I can lock it to this tower or something, so that it will quit searching all over. Looking at the address’ in netmonitor, it is pinging towers that may be up to 10 miles away or so.
The phone is rooted, and I have roam control installed which works well. But I would like to figure something out to get this to work as it should, else dump Sprint which I don’t really want to do just yet. They are of no help though with this situation.
I don’t really know much about these smartphones since my experience with them so far has been not so good. Please speak idiot speak if you have some ideas or suggestions…
Thanks!!!
I do not believe you can force connection to a specific tower. The problem you have is with building penetration at your work. You must be on the very edge of coverage for the closest tower and it cannot penetrate the walls.
If this is happening at home too, then you can at the very least call for a free Airave from Sprint. Otherwise you can use the lack of coverage in your primary areas as a possible reason to get the ETF waived to jump carriers.
Signal Problems must be the S and P in Sprint! I also have been thinking about dropping Sprint. My girlfriend and I just moved in together, she has Verizon, her Pandora doesn't freeze up, Youtube doesn't buffer at all, and great downloads speeds all just on 3G! Meanwhile Sprints network is totally opposite.
My GF laughed when we decided to lower our bills and combine cell phone plans, and she get on my Sprint network.
Ill stop right there, didn't mean to start trolling. I'm not even going to talk about 4G LTE. But try the airrave box out, I'm waiting on one now.

Just had a thought, have you tried different modems? As far as EC05, EI22, FC09, etc, I'm going to try this over the next few days.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
I agree with your S & P!
I have the device, you need to have a high speed internet connection for it to work.
It will do the job as long as you can be within 100 feet or so. That would be good for an apartment or house even, but not a whole area, or many areas.
The other thing to pay attention to with it is, make sure you have a large amount of package plan minutes.
Things like unlimited mobile to mobile don’t matter with this, if you are using the airave to connect, it uses plan minutes.
As for modems, that doesn’t fall under my idiot speak area, so I am not sure what you mean. Definitely not sure how to modify it/them.
Please let me know.
Since you said your phone is rooted i assume that you rooted it yourself. If you rooted your phone, using Odin to change modems on your phone is fairly easy. Only problem is searching and finding the modems. Search on youtube for QBKing Epic 4g odin modems, dont have a link to post but you should find it.
As far as that airave box, if you have to highspeed internet, that would be useless for me. The voice and phone calls i dont have a problem with its the 3g speeds. I usually send mms and surf internet using wifi anyway.

Yeah, I had a kid I work with do the root deal. Hahaha..
I think mine is on EL22 now, as I recall seeing that somewhere, and I keep getting a notification to upgrade to FC09.
I thought those were the software levels of the phone though…Anyhow, as you can tell I don’t know much about this stuff. Trying to learn a few things here.
I'm currently running CM9 (epicmtd) - FC09 modem. Ever since I upgraded to FC09 (I think.... may have been when I got to CM9 Beta), I have been having connection issues. I can't even make a call in my own house. I have to walk outside to start the call, then I can walk back inside.
I'm going to try dropping back to EL22 to see if that will fix it, I can't deal with this.

At my house is ok, phone doesn't drop all calls.
At my office, it's a paperweight.
I am on EL22 still though as I keep getting the notification to upgrade to FC09.
Since I'm rooted I dont know if it will screw me or leave the phone in-op if I choose to "install now"...\
Are you on Sprint also?

you can let the update install. it will download and then hang, you will see a YELLOW HAZARD symbol. after this, just pull the battery and then reboot the phone, you will be fine. have the kid at your work update your KERNEL and see if that works. FC09 (BML)
Hey guys, I just a sprint gnex phone a few weeks back and ran the GNex toolkit v9.1 to unlock and root it this past saturday so I could use a hotspot app for my tablet.
I don't know if this is just a bad coincidence or if I did something wrong..I'm not new to roms and have modded my previous phone (evo 4g) about 50 times, but here's what's happening.
Prior to this weekend I had full signal/bars..Now I can barely get 2..It's mostly sitting at 1 bar and sometimes drops the connection entirely. At the same time, every txt msg I send comes back with an error stating it did not send, however...It does actually go through, twice even. This happens with every text to every person.
I didn't put a rom on it, and I didn't even install clockwork mod...I simply just unlocked the bootloader and rooted it. I did setup google voice afterwards. I can't see how doing this would cause these kind of issues and I haven't called Sprint yet as I absolutely despise their customer service..I'd rather get feedback here first.
The coincidence that I'm referring to is that I'm in Austin, Tx and they're in the process of spinning up 4g LTE towers right now..If by chance they started upgrading my tower this weekend (yesterday & today) then I could definitely see these issues...I walked down about 2 blocks where I do get a full 4g signal, but my txting still had the same issue.
Any ideas or thoughts about my problems?
On one hand, I would tell you that rooting doesn't cause that.
On the other hand, you used a toolkit, so who knows what you ended up doing.
If you haven't changed anything as far as ROMs or mods, then I would suspect you're right about something with the network. The only other thing I can think of would be hardware problems of some kind. That seems a lot less likely though. Sprint does supposedly keep a list of networks that are being worked on. You could check in with them and see if the one in your area is being upgraded.

happened to me.
Reboot your phone and go to about and sprint system update.
update profile.
Idk why but its sometimes happens for no reason.
Make sure you have good connection first.(go outside)
If that doesnt work update prl to make the network find the closet tower to you.

I was trying that repeatedly hoping it would fix it..but it doesn't.
On another note, today when I woke up and rebooted the phone I had full bars on 4G signal..Thought life was good and then about 5 mins later it was back to 1 bar 3G. That's the first time I've seen a 4G signal here in my apartment so I'm hoping it really is just the towers in my neighborhood being converted to 4G right now.
I've rebooted my phone 3 times now and the same occurrence happens..Full signal with 4G for a few mins, and then it drops to 1 bar 3G..Have updated my profile and PRL and tried airplane mode..Only way to get that 4G signal back is to reboot the phone..Won't stay on 4G though.
I bought a Tmobile Galaxy S3 on new years from staples, and since ive got the phone ive been experiencing strange 4g speeds. While im in my house, I always have full signal strength, and it always says 4G. I live in the Bronx in New York City, and when the 4g is working properly, I get upwards of 20 megabits down, and 1-2 up. Now I could literally be sitting in the exact same spot, and later ill test the phone and it says 0.2 - 0.3 megabits, and like over 1000 ping and the up is so slow it doesnt even measure it. It usually comes back after waiting, turning airplane mode off and on multiple times or doing a battery pull. I find it strange that I can get either 21 mbps or 0.3 in the same house, while always having full bars. In the phone status sometimes it would say UTMS or HSPA, so it does switch from 3g to 4g sometimes. The thing is my previous phone was Nexus S with 3g and im pretty sure I never had a problem loading a simple image in my house because the internet was so slow. I consistently pulled 3-6 mbps on that phone. I tried calling t-mobile 3 times and they give me the same basic crap, like clear your cache, make sure airplane mode is off (really?) make sure youre network mode is on auto (i tried auto and wcdma only and it still gets slow) and all that other stuff. Is there anything else I could try to see if its a network or phone issue?
It sounds like it might be something with your local tower. I would call Tmobile and put in a repair ticket.

Thanks, I just did that. Called t-mobile and just directly asked them to check for tower issues, and they filed a complaint. They said to check back in 3 days, hopefully this gets fixed, or else it might be the phone. Do you think flashing different modems would change anything?

It wouldn't hurt to try. What are you currently running? (rom/kernel/modem)

Completely stock 4.1.1, with UVDLJA modem, which is the latest I believe. The phone is relatively new so I wanted to try touchwiz before I rooted. Does installing something like cm10 change the modem? Or is it independent of rom/kernel. I saw an application for tmo that can change between multiple modems pretty quickly, I might give it a try.

I work for T-Mo,
If I may lend my opinion,
To me, it definitely sounds like the tower. If you go from 20Mbit down to 0.2, and with 1000ms latency, it's super obvious there is something
wrong with the tower, or there is significant demand on the tower from other users, hey its NYC population density is insane.
Something to note as well, New York City is "in progress" for "network modernization" where they are switching to 1900Mhz.
This is why some people who have iPhones are now getting 3G in certain areas, unlocked devices, as well as AT&T phones can have 3G down there.
Due to this, since there is quite a lot of switching around going on down there, that's probably what's going on.
Example:
http://www.tmonews.com/2013/01/t-mobiles-network-modernization-what-is-it-where-can-i-get-coverage/
Hope it helps.
I see, well that makes sense. I dont really mind if its a tower issue because thatll be fixed eventually, I just would of hated if I had to replace the phone, it would of been such a hassle because I didnt buy it direct from t-mo. Thanks to both of you!
Also, since t-mobile seems to be using multiple bands for 4g, I guess it would be better to leave it on auto in network settings?

If it helps you at all to see if you are on a different band than 1700/2100mhz
You can go into the dialer and do:
*#0011#
Up top mine says band 4
Which is for 1700mhz AWS
BAND 2
which is for 1900mhz PCS.
You might be on band 4 or 2 on a tower by tower basis, or if they are making adjustments
You might be switched but that is above my pay grade lol
Hi,
I've been having data issues with my HTC ONE M8 on Straight Talk for the past couple of weeks. the data service for some reasons got really iffy. before everything was absolutely fine. now sometimes I cannot access data at all, sometimes something is working and something doesn't.
when the data doesn't work:
- most of websites are not reachable
- google.com seems to work normally
- google maps might work; sometimes very slow, sometimes not working at all
- ookla speedtest won't start, but if I set a fixed server it might work
- facebook.com might work in the browser but the app doesn't work
- refreshing the page seems to help
on WI-FI I have absolutely no problem. everything works fine.
phone and txt messages work without problems.
on 3G (HSDPA) everything seems to work fine. I see problems when on LTE.
anybody has the similar issues?? any suggestions?
many thank!!
I am having the exact same issue! So frustrating, I don't want to use 3g if we should be on "Full speed 4G LTE for up to 3GB"!
tried so many different APN's, no luck can't get over 2.5mbps with any of them
I would be happy with anything that works right now. the service is just NOT WORKING. I am paying for a service that doesn't work and that's not acceptable.
I opened a case with the help desk; useless. I was talking to people who don't understand the basic concepts of networking. made me add a proxy to the APN; no difference at all.
then I put a complain on Twitter and got some other people "helping" via email. at least they asked for the address of where I am always having problems; hopefully, they check out the service at the antenna. I think it's not a BTS (antenna) issue but something related to their proxy, firewall or network gateway since google.com works without problems!
I talked to a friend of mine who has StraightTalk as well and he said that he had the same issue last year!
I had the exact same issue with Net10 it is so annoying and unacceptable =(
Have you tried calling straight talk a call
U can try this from what I know ur phone gets chooses the strongest signal tower example u are around 3G tower it has a 9/10 signal and the 4g tower is a 6/10 strength it goes with the 3g hope this helps in ur dial pad dial *#*#4636#*#* then Phone Information....Scroll down a little bit to Set preferred network type. I was able to lock in LTE only doing this and gave me the fastest signal on my device hope with works for u. If u can post ur original settings before u change to lte option only on this post so u can always revert to ur original setting good luck.

if I lock it to 3G it actually works well. I will try your suggested settings.
on another note I wonder if it's an issue with the phone radio implementation. my Nokia/Windows phone sees LTE very very slow but it doesn't stop working completely.

Hmmm Idk but anything's worth a try what settings do u have it on already?
if I put it on GSM/WCDMA (so no LTE) data works fine in 3G.
and if I do a speed test in 3G it gets about 5Mbps in download vs 1, 2 or 3 Mbps when LTE works (ZERO otherwise)
The exact same thing started happening to me two or three weeks ago. More often than not, the LTE connection simply doesn't work, and when it does, it's excruciatingly slow (anywhere from 0.01 to 2.50 mpbs, and usually less than 1.00). Do you guys have AT&T or T-Mo sims? I'm starting to wonder if going to Cricket would solve the problem, but since I'm running an AT&T sim, I'm not sure if anything would change since it's on the same network.
Straight Talk support is worthless... they think a factory data reset will fix it, when it's clearly a network issue. I just told them to stop right there and started troubleshooting myself. That's a good tip about dialing *#*#4636#*#* and turning off LTE that way. It seems like that is where the issue lies - I'm having good luck with HSPA; it's slower than LTE should be, but at least it works. It'll do as a stopgap through the end of my billing cycle, at which point I can decide whether to go somewhere else or get by on HSPA until they fix whatever the problem is.

I have ST on AT&T.
a friend of mine with iPhone 6 down in Newport has no problems. he sent me screenshots of speed test at 15Mbps.
I really wonder if it's some radio firmware issue...
Ironically, I ran into something very like this too recently....I was on an at&t straighttalk sim...lte had been OK prior to me updating to 4.4.4. It was never spectacular, but it was, at least, lte speeds. After the update I noticed it had become really sketchy...just as described, pretty much; even when mine worked it was trash. 3g was much better and totally stable. I thought it might be the update, but long story short, it wasn't. I inserted a friend's sim from tmobile and got full lte with no issues.
Now, in my case, I had been using a shaved down microsim rather than a nano sim, so I thought, maybe that's the issue. I noticed when ordering the new one, the tmobile one actually said htc m8 compatible on the page(plus my friend's legit tmobile sim got good signal and lte so I thought that's a good basis for comparison). Got the new one, put my number on it, and voila! I'm getting on average 20mbps lte. And it's very consistent too. So now I'm on the tmobile straighttalk sim and everything is fine.
Anyways, it's only $7 with free overnight shipping, so that's something easy to try. This wouldn't be the first time a new sim fixed all sorts of weird data problems with straighttalk either. I've been on with them for several years now and this is probably my 4-5th sim I've had to get for various reasons.
So, anyways, your mileage may vary but that fixed it for me. Hope it helps.

it seems ST on T-mobile is not having the same issues as ST on AT&T. the problem is that T-mobile coverage is not so good in my area.
I tried my phone in a different location (400 miles away) and had the same issues.
I've done some more testing.
it is really weird that Google.com works flawless while any other site seems not to work.
activating "save data usage" in Chrome seems to help. however it doesn't solve the problem. sometimes pages needs to be reloaded a few times.
even when LTE works, the OOKLA speed test gives me 2Mbps in dowload and 5-6Mbps in upload. so no matter what, I am better off with 3G.
I found an interesting thread here on XDA. I am not rooted at the moment and can't try.
<<
If you are rooted there is simple FIX, simple disable FD8 (Fast dormacy 8)
ro.ril.enable.r8fd=1
ro.ril.enable.pre_r8fd=1
Change both to =0 and issue will be fixed.
If your not rooted only fix is to keep HotSpot enabled than data connection wont break.

I tried the hotspot trick but it doesn't work for me
Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just wanted to give a brief update. My LTE issues with Straight Talk went unresolved for about 6 weeks despite multiple conversations with customer service. I experienced this in Raleigh, NC, Greensboro, NC, and Virginia Beach, VA. Then for Thanksgiving, I went to New York City and New Jersey (the part just outside of Philly), where all data connections were unreliable. Yes, that means 2G, 3G, HSPA, and LTE were all spotty at best the entire time.
I ran out of patience after that, and since my billing cycle was ending on 12/4, I switched to Cricket when I got home. As soon as I popped in the Cricket sim card, everything started working flawlessly again. Cricket does limit you to 8 mbps down, but that's good enough for my purposes. The issue, if it's still going on, is with Straight Talk and not the phone.
Lollipop Fixed the Issue on my HTC M8
Hey all,
I've been following this thread as I too had issues with LTE on my HTC M8 using StraightTalk. When I first got my phone, it worked perfectly with LTE on ST. Then I ran the OS update that was released sometime near November. That's when I noticed the problems. I could run a search on Google but any webpage I would try to connect to would not load. The phone would hang and eventually time out. Your instructions to turn off LTE was great help. Pages load perfectly provided LTE is not used. I was getting really frustrated and you kept me from throwing my phone at a wall. Thanks for that.
So that brings me to this post. I updated my phone to Lollipop this morning. Thought I'd give turning LTE back on and bam.... works perfectly. I've been testing it all morning and so far, all pages load really fast. I will keep an eye on it for a while and post any updates but thought I pay it back a bit with the good news since you guys helped me.
Thanks again.

thank you for sharing!!
trying to upgrade to Lollipop. unfortunately I am having an issue with the recovery (flashed from TWRP to a stock that doesn't work with the OTA and can't flash any other recovery -not sure what's wrong).
when I solve this issue and able to upgrade to Lollipop I will share my LTE test results
