[Q] Completely lost "Noob" trying to flash a stock ROM - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am actually shocked that I kind of understand what my subject is - I have been reading and googling and searching on this forum and even the threads that say they are "basic" and go "step by step" are completely Greek to me. So I apologize as I'm sure this is very basic and has been asked before but I really don't know what else to do.
HTC Desire HD
Sense Version 2.1
Currently have LeeDroid installed by the previous user (I bought this phone used).
I just want to get it back to the "normal" ROM...whatever that is.
I have found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842937
but even this does not making any sense to me:
Requirements
In order to use this ROM on your device, you must have a custom recovery image installed (Clockwork Mod).
Can someone please help me? I really really appreciate it.

to quote Doktaphex
"DO NOT FLASH A NEW RUU OR OFFICIAL ROM IMAGE UNLESS YOU *REALLY* KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING !"
It is essential. Get use to all the basics of rooting and flashing. maybe this can help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076

Thank you. I have been reading through that and I'm still lost. I definitely don't want to do anything stupid though so I may just be stuck with this thing, and all this stuff is way over my head.
Thanks for the fast reply!

What is your ultimate aim with your phone?
Are you interested in custom ROM's, root access, sim unlock etc, or would you simply like to put some official HTC firmware back on the phone?
In my limited experience is it very easy to return to a stock ROM using RUU (Rom Upgrade Utility). No difficult steps required or hacks needed.
Check this recommended starters link, and scroll to the 'Stock Rom' section
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846248

I suppose you were refering to Stock/Original ROM (the one that HTC had provided) when you say "normal ROM", downloading RUU will be the easiest. You can try try to search on google or you can also try this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824357&highlight=official+ruu
You may also need HTC sync for the drivers.

[q] help please!!!

I bought a Desire today and without checking anything (as I am new to all this) I have bought one with OpenDesire already installed!
I would really like to restore it back to Sense UI (factory default) so that i can learn how to use it etc...
1, I have no Idea if it was branded/locked before purchase
2, I am fairly useful with a PC but android is VERY new to me so baby steps please
Thank you!!
As it's already rooted you should find it fairly easy to install a new custom rom that is close to stock. Have a look in the development forum and see what rom you fancy and give it a go.
Have a wee read about how to flash a rom, use a custom recovery, and partition your SD card. It's daunting to read, but really very easy once you have an idea
do i not need a "goldcard" to do that?
No. A goldcard is only needed if you want to install an official untouched HTC rom. As things are right now with your phone your good to go!
Yeah the "hard" part is done.. lol
Root the phone, there are loots of roms with sense, i used pinky1.8 fast stable had no problems, very easy to install,
Install an app called rom manager, u can find it for free in the market, save your sdcard, and with rm, partition the sdcard with the standard options, dw the rom and install it ;-)
Recomend a wipe data when asked
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Could just ask the seller where it was from and then get the RUU and flash back to stock
Can i still make a goldcard?
Yes, so long as the phone is running you can make a gold card. I'd first find out where the Desire was purchased, though, so you at least know what ROM to revert to should you ever need to return it for repair...
which custom rom do you think would be closest to stock for me?
Quick look in the Dev forum would've done you a favour...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
But please try and find out what the Desire originally came with. It'll help in the long run...
what is "Radio"
I'm really struggling here as i don't know what he did already to get oipendesire on it??
If you don't know what you're doing then don't try anything at present. Do this instead:
1. Create a gold card (unless you do what I've suggested and try and find out what was on the Desire originally - contact the person you bought it off of)
2. Follow this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256. This will revert you back to stock until you have learnt enough to venture into flashing a custom ROM. Chances are the stock ROM will do what you want it to do without issues

OTA update

Hi, yesterday i got a massage that i can download new ota update 2.29... i've decided not to dwnl. it cause phone is rooted but it is on custom rom and i have data to sd as it says in my signature. Quest. is, what hapend in that case when upgradeing?
htc desire data2sd
Never apply OTA on rooted phones!
You most likely will mess up your phone.
If you want the changes from the update either use the matching RUU or find a custom rom based on that version.
Oh and your signature is empty.
Thx, for reply. It is the main problem i can't decide what is the compatibile rom. I know it is verry newbe quest but it so hard for me to get it on cause there is so much of everything that can brick the phone. As much as i read that less i understand. Can't find the rom that is up to date and that it is compatibile. Don't know how to decide which is ok. About signature, english isn't my native lang. and it is hard to find the right expression .
htc desire data2sd
There isn't that much that can brick your phone, people use the word brick to much for every little problem they have. As far as I know there are only three ways to brick a phone:
Hardware damage
Faulty radio install
Messing up the hboot
There might be more but can't think of any other right now. Non of these are relevant to you right now.
For all the desire compatible rom's check this thread. StarBurst is probably your best bet if you want to keep the normal Sense. Make sure to read the thread for requirements and instructions.
Thank you for your patiente, one more newbie q. I can`t find on the google how to see which recovery mode do i have? There i see some notes to whatch out with which recovery to oprate but i can`t find how to see which version is mine.
Just boot in recovery, there should be a line telling what recovery it is. Most likely you have CWM 2.5.0.7.
You are right once again . So from now on i should find the newest rom. Is gingerbred for desire yet out and should it be something much better then those roms you've sugest me in the privious post? As i saw on the forum those custom roms are eaven more up to date and provide more options than those "original" roms, and another confusing thing is that in star burst is option to update ota, is this correct or i do not understand it correctly?
htc desire data2sd
Same concern here:
I've rooted the phone, I've installed Rom Manager, wasn't convinced to install any ROM. How this will affect the OTA update ?
To be honest I'm waiting for the official 2.3 from HTC and I've rooted the phone mainly to get access to some Market software unavailable outside the US (maps, voice actions, etc).
I've also unlocked the phone using seempi's method.
If you're rooted you can't apply the OTA, simple as that.
If you want OTAs then you'll need to go back to stock
Whats the full version number of ota update?

When is the best time to S-off?

Newb Alert!
Hi I'm currently running stock android 2.2.1 (build 1.72.405.3) on an unbranded DHD in the UK (I'm on Orange if that matters) I'm getting frustrated with the wait for 2.3 to be released here so I want to install the official RUU that was released a little while back.
I understand that to do this my phone will still be "official" ish, and that the only real difference between this way and OTA is that I'll lose my apps etc. which I can handle.
I want to be able to try some custom roms (in the future) but then be able to return the phone to stock - I believe this is possible? Am I better off downgrading now and doing S-off / eng-off, clockwork recovery, root etc? Or will I be fine to downgrade from 2.3 to 1.32 in the future to do everything I'll need for custom ROMS?
Or am I a muppet and have things totally wrong?
Any help appreciated,
Grim.
Ps. I've read the sticky in the Development forum, and tried searching the forum to find answers but have found it difficult as the terms I'm searching for are really generic - for this forum at least.

Simple answer: Do it NOW!!!
Yes you can always go back to stock.
Much easier to do everything now.
Even if you only do root and S-OFF, you will be protected should the OTA update arrive in the sense that you won't need to downgrade again. But in for a penny and all that, go for the lot now and start exploring the greatness of Android and Sense (if you like that).

hi grim..
not neccesary you are going to lose your apk´s...
you can install "titanium backup" and do a backup of your apk´s, your system and your data (dialer, missed calls, wifi passwords...on sd-card\titaniumbackup) and then when you has installed your new gingerbread rom you can restore it.
download it from android market..
and finally say to you step by step what should to do:
1ºDOWNGRADE proccess from 1.72xx to 1.32xx wee off. ru
2ºroot with visionary Rxx
3º s-off eng-off+SUPERCID
4ºinstall ROM MANAGER from market and then flash a CWM recovery (lastest)
5ºDOWNLOAD the gingerbread rom, copy, paste to sd card root,
6ºDO FULL WIPE in recovery (factory reset, data, dalvik)
7ºFLASH the new rom and ENJOY

WIN!!!!!!
Hi grimbola
You can do anything, anywhere, and anyhow on your Desire HD (But make sure you know what you are doing. Lol.) It all depends on your risk appetite.
only follow the guides, it sounds more difficult than it is.
I did it as an unexperienced user 3 weeks ago and the master plan was, to read the guides
Hi guys,
Thanks for all the speedy replies! I read them last week, but have only now have the time to reply.
I did it! I downgraded to 1.36 (?) then ran the tool on my pc to do radio S-off then also ran the other tool to Eng S-off - I followed jkoljo's posts (from the sticky roll-up thread over on the development forum). I've now installed the official 2.3. It was a little scary at times, but easy as pie!
The only issue I had was that I don't think I backed up my apps correctly (I used Astro file browser to do it) as they have not all been restored, however this is no great pain!
I'm now thinking that I might try installing a custom ROM, maybe Leedroid? I'm after something that is like the stock rom - i.e. Sense based (at least to start with) but has more bells and whistles - any suggestions are welcome!
Once again many thanks for your replies,
Grim.

[Q] upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3.x without rooting

It is a shame to say that I still use Android 2.2 with Kernel 2.6.32.21, Taiwan version since I bought the phone a year ago.
(Not until recently, I have decided to move on to Gingerbread because
I wanna use the the latest features in the NDK to write some C++ programs for Android.)
Without getting into trouble during/after rooting,
I tried an official OTA upgrade but it doesn't work.
I tried to ask HTC but they said they still don't have any official upgrade for my phone.
I am a newbie here in this forum,
Could anybody please kindly offer your help please?
It will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! I wanna make my App!!!
swimd
If there is no official Gingerbread for your phone (which seems odd ?) then you can flash a different official GB ROM onto your phone. But normally your phone isn't going to let you do this, because it will fail the signature checks.
What you need to do is to de-brand your phone so that it doesn't do these checks any more. I will see if I can dig out a link to a guide and edit it into my post, unless someone else beats me to it.

Steviewevie,
Thank you for your help in advance!
I can't copy and paste the link right now, but use the Search function in the Android Dev forum to find the thread called "Debranding Bell Desire Z" (it doesn't only apply to Bell phones).
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
Thank you for the help!
I have found that thread!
BTW, after a quick look of the thread, it seems that S-off is recommended...
Do I need to get "root" in order to do so?
Should I do that to prevent future trouble?
Always recomend rooting phones right away, if you have a custom recovery and an enginering bootloader you can save tons of headaches in the future when problems arise (as they often do) this of course is outside the fact that a rooted phone is a happy phone and certainly not an apple

As demkantor said, getting S-OFF is a lot better because it gives you a lot more options for the future, even if you don't use those options straight away.
IMHO the only reason to use the goldcard method and not full S-OFF is if you are really worried about voiding your warranty or the S-OFF process yourself. But there's no need to worry really, since (a) you can easily reverse the process if you need to, and (b) lots of people here can help you through getting S-OFF (the XDA Wiki explains it very well, though it can look daunting at first).

+1 to the notion of just rooting the phone. Especially since if are software developer, I would think that you would want full control over your device. And if you have these type of skill, rooting will be easy.
As mentioned, root, S-Off etc. can be removed for warranty purposes, if that is the concern.
The Wiki method is generally accepted as the safest:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
demkantor and all,
Thanks!!! ok, I am least I will go for S-OFF!
But, I need to be able to fully recover my OS and Apps,
I need to do some research on stock recovery and/or custom recovery...
Well, I think there is an official update to Gingerbread thou.. But I think dont think that version is in English as it is a Hongkong version.

[Q] Complete noob humbly asking for help

Hey guys,
I've been around the Defy forum for quite a while now; however, my Desire is back from the dead and now my beloved
Motorola Defy is retired, which means that I'll be getting to know this forum instead!
Right now I have absolutely nothing. Just a TELUS Desire GSM on 2.2 stock froyo. Can someone point me in the right
direction for rooting and S-OFF? Do I need to unlock my bootloader as well for most ROMs?
I have this ROM in mind:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980122
Everything is pretty straightforward except for a few things:
Someone PLEASE help me, but I'm not going to be demanding or anything. So help me if you can.
1. How the hell did you guys end up with, like, 10 different recoveries and HBOOTs? I've heard CM7R2, stock, Amon RA, among others.
Someone can clarify this?
2. I don't get the partition things at all. For the above ROM what do I need?
3. And just how to root and S-OFF and unlock BL if I need to...
4. A simple procedure for all this maybe?:silly:
5. A simple explanation on how HBOOT and recovery and custom recovery work? On the Defy, we had a 2nd-init and 2nd-boot that basically
launched a custom ROM and kernel on top of stock because the bootloader was locked down. The CWM recovery was accessible from the bootmenu, which was in turn launched by pressing volume-down at the blue LED halfway through boot.
6. Last and not most important does the ROM above (Cooldroid Revolution 9.0) have working Wifi? It says it's "fast, smooth and stable" but...
Thanks so much.
Soooo...
Welcome to the Desire forums.
You should start by ignoring anything that has to do with the Defy. You don't need to unlock the bootloader.
Now, let's start with s-off.
Follow this tutorial Long link, and ignore step 2.
After you're s-off, you should install 4ext recovery. It's the best recovery for the Desire.
In this guide, you will install 4ext, and create an ext partition on your sd-card. The partition is allocated for more internal memory (more apps).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2125513
Read every guide carefully. You will learn a lot.
After you did those things, you can install a custom ROM. I don't recommend you use the one you mentioned as a daily one. It's still a work in progress, and has a lot of bugs.
There are many hboots. When you change hboot, you change the way the internal memory is partitioned.
For example, the cm7r2 hboot has a smaller system allocated space than the stock hboot.
You usually change hboots to get more app space.
Thanks!
But what about root? What tool should I use?
Edit: never mind, I saw the guide link in your signature
I'll get back to you when I'm done rooting. Fingers crossed.
You will root it when you either install a custom rom, or install the supersu zip.
So I read up on some guides that told me to use unrevoked, so I have this reflash_package.exe ready to go. I've uninstalled HTC sync because unrevoked tells me to.
Just one question: I can only use CWM recovery if using unrevoked? That's the default, and only recovery available with it. Can I just download the 4EXTRecoveryUpdater.apk later and change it to 4ext recovery?
If I end up somehow with a ROM that does not boot, how do I fix it? Flash an original RUU?
Why didn't you just listen to me? You don't need unrevoked.
Did you backup before flashing a rom? If you did, then restore it..
Flash another rom, or flash the 2.3 ruu.

I did it! Thank you so much for helping me, despite all my noobiness in this forum.
I'm running Cooldroid Revolution 9.0 now. Again, thanks so much. About 7 hours later after I started reading up
and working with my Desire, I've learned a lot of things about S-OFF and HBOOT and EXT4.
I did a nandroid backup of my original 2.2 ROM before I formatted my SD card and it's backed up on my new
fat32 and my desktop as well. I guess I'm safe for now.
Oh and one more thing, are RUUs like a last-ditch attempt to save your phone? I remember there was a 2.3 RUU upgrade
that came in the form of an .exe and you just needed to plug your phone in, the .exe would do all the upgrading stuff for you.
Yeah. Ruu's are usually the last things that can save your roms.
Even noobier
I am even more of a noob than anyone else I've seen on here.
I am a college student, and I'm considered the best programmer in my class, so I was hired by my school to develop a mobile app for the admissions department. One of my classmates already developed one for apple, but he graduated, so my job is to create one for Android. They are fully aware that mobile app development is not taught here, and none of the people I will be working with knows anything about it either, so it is going to be interesting, to say the least.
My best language is C#, so Java should be no problem, but I am completely at a loss as to where to start. All the app development information I've been able to find is geared toward Ice Cream Sandwich, but I want to make sure my app works on Gingerbread because of its huge market share, plus anything newer.
I've looked at the "beginners" threads on here but I don't understand even half of what people are saying (I speak geek but it's a completely different dialect lol). Is there a resource somewhere where a good C#, Visual Basic, and SQL programmer can teach herself something completely new, and do it right?
Try this guide:
http://developer.android.com/training/index.html
Thanks, I will look into that
