BRICKED-download mode not detected- - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A friend messed his epic up and I'm trying to fix it but it isn't going well...
Boot....just stayed at Samsung screen..bottom keys don't light
Wont boot into recovery
Tries to boot immediately once the battery is put in.
Download mode is not detected on ANY computer, whatever bit, whatever rom...
What r my options? With out the phones drivers being detected...Odin and heimdoll r useless...
Any options ideas??

Ok some questions:
Stock cable?
Reinstalled the drivers?
Is windows sayings an unknown device?
Solutions:
Take the battery out and sd card and leave it out use the computer as the power source and see if odin will com.
What windows bit are you using I know 64 and windows 7 has issues but I have drivers that should work for you.
Most importantly use a different cable 99.99% of unknown problems are caused by the cable being faulty.

If you can't get it to work id say send it to me ill get it detected if not ill pay for shipping it back

Seems to me like there's something wrong with the usb port on the phone. I know that download mode produces a less amount of voltage than the phone on/off and if its not the correct amount the phone won't be recognise means anything I would try wouldn't work...

uninstall your drivers. reboot your computer, reinstall your drivers manually http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/sprint/SPH-D700ZKASPR
then put the cable into your phone..once it's in , check the end that's in the computer.. wiggle both ends around a little... see if you get a "com" on odin..

I did try completely reinstalling drivers and plugging in phone randomly during process to get it to catch but no go. Yea its definitely the phone not being recognizable and not my set up...I even tried having it recognize my other epic and switching phones right at start of flash...but it disconnected EVERY time lol...thought it was worth a shot lol. Wonder if I split a USB into a 2 headed snake I can reflash both phones at once?...maybe unplug one once it gets going....

i had the same problem on a phone i flashed today, used a cable from a different phone and it worked. also once i installed cwm i couldnt use the action button to make my selection. i had to use the camera button. I have flashed alot of these and never seen that until today.

edit: sorry, I read about it on XDA here a couple of weeks ago, thought it was OK but now I cannot find the post that I was refering to. So disreguard my reference please......
re-edit: found it!!! It was farther back then I thought. All I read the first time was the main page of the post & not the whole thread, I read deeper into it now & realized that even though some Dev's that I recognized started the post, it seems like it is unlikely to be true.......sorry again guys......

If you try this, you should go directly to download mode & use Odin afterwards.

There is no magical reset button.... take it apart and there's no button. Most people believe this to be true because they left the battery out long enough for charge to go away.

[Q] did i brick/break my phone?

Long story short, I get the phone-!-computer icon when I power-up. So I put the phone into download mode, fire up odin, and plug the phone into the computer. Except the computer doesn't make the new hardware detected sound, and odin doesn't show the phone. It also doesn't appear in the device manager under USB devices, so I can't try uninstalling and re-installing the drivers.
I've tried 3 computers (Vista 64, Vista 32, and XP Pro), all the USB ports on each computer, and 4 different USB cables (only one was stock Samsung). I've tried leaving the battery out overnight, going into d/l mode without the battery in, holding down the power button without the battery for 1 minute. None of that would get the phone to show up.
If it makes a difference, right before this happened, I was attempting to flash back to stock with Odin because I just flashed a new rom with CWM and it was acting weird. The first time I put it into d/l mode and ran Odin, it detected fine and began flashing, but odin froze and the phone turned black.
I rebooted the phone into download mode, and restarted Odin, and tried again. Then it froze again at a different point and screen turned black again, so I rebooted into download mode again, and that's when it wouldn't detect the phone anymore.
If you can get your phone into download mode then you're not bricked. It seems like you're having issues with the drivers for the phone and possible usb cable problems. The stock samsung cable causes issues. I bought a new usb cable and haven't had issues since

Well its weird that he tried 4 different cables and three computers, all different OSs and it still wont show.......
You said that you took the battery out over night...... did you hold the power button down while the battery was out to discharge the circuits?
LOL... well I looked at the port on the phone under a big magnifying lens, and saw there was a small hair stuck in there. After much effort, I was able to get it out and now the computer is at least detecting it and saying "unknown device". I'm gonna try re-installing the drivers to see if that gets it to work.

Oops i guess I missed that part about the extra cables. You can uninstall and reinstall the drivers. The drivers are what allows the computer to interact with the phone but you're wording makes it seem like you think the drivers get downloaded into the phone (which they don't).

No, I knew that. The issue was the computer wasn't detecting the phone and so it wasn't showing up in device manager at all, so I had no way to uninstall the drivers. But it turned out to be the goddamn hair, so I'm up and running again

I'm actually having this same issue, mine boots to the Samsung screen and makes the booting noises and everything but stays at the Samsung screen.
I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the USB drivers and have all the correct files for Odin but when I put it into Download mode and plug it in to the computer Odin doesn't recognize it and neither does my computer.
Well mine was definitely caused by a hair in the usb port. You might want to try using some electronics contact cleaner (available at radio shack or lowes in the US) to clean the contacts on the usb port if there's nothing visible preventing a good connection.

[Q] Bricked during el13 frimware upgrade

Hello all, my name is Matt.
I bricked my Epic 4G Galaxy S installing the EL13 firmware.
I had it rooted with CWM 5.0.2.7 (or whatever) with CleanGB 1.03 and the Samurai kernal (think it's 1.06, whichever is the latest). I was flashing it through Odin3 and it abruptly aborted and failed the transfer. I'm thinking it may have been a bad USB cable. I pulled the battery since it didn't reboot or take any button commands.
I does not show the Samsung logo, and when i plug in power/usb cable it does not show a red light. Do i have to do the Unbrickable MOD or is there anything I can do through a PC?

don't do an unbrickable mod, just download the right file from the sticky in the android dev. section and odin it from download mode. make sure you have the right file!!! it's "EC05" ... good luck!
So if the Unbrickable mod don't work, how am i supposed to get odin to work? it doesn't show up in the COM list when i plug the phone in. I tried the no sdcard/battery trick, and it doesn't do anything.
Am I up the creek then?

Try popping the battery in and out repeatedly while attempting to go into download mode. It will eventually reset the phone and work. Then try all USB ports until Odin reacts. You will have to pull the battery and reset for Odin to successfully repeat after that. If no ports show the phone, try a Blackberry cable or any other one but stock. Also reinstall the drivers.

Don't Panick Yet
I had a problem flashing ACS recovery with a corrupt zip that effectively bricked my phone to the point Sprint Techs declared it dead and ordered me a replacement. Let me tell you something that worked to revive that phone. Pull off the battery cover. Look just down and to the left of the camera lens for a small button that you press with a pin/paper clip/etc. If I recall, press and hold it for about 5 - 10 seconds, and when you go to boot up, it will immediately boot into download mode. That let me revive my completely non responsive (No charging LED, battery ICON, boot, etc) Epic 4G

Buttons don't work in download mode, nothing works in download mode. It's not standard user mode. Get a better USB cord, and/or plug the cord into the BACK of your computer (ie USB port directly on the motherboard). If that doesn't work, try a newer computer. Also make sure ALL the drivers are installed and fully updated. Also, have Odin open and set up before plugging your phone in (obviously, while in download mode). You're not bricked yet! Just sponged...

he said he can't get into download mode. but you could always take it to sprint if you have insurance. just play dumb say the phone wanted to update and the batttery fell out or something like that. before you do that if you have a stand alone battery charger charge your battery on that and retry. I have 2 batterys and when i tried to get my phone UN-bricked both of the batterys had no juice in them. hope you can get it working again.

Cannot boot into download mode

I am currently on CM7 MTD and I cannot get into download mode to odin back to stock. If I pull out the battery and put it back in the phone just turns on normally even if I am holding down "1" on the physical keyboard while I put the battery back in. I'm not sure what other ways I can get into download mode so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Need to hold the power button and the 1 on the hardware keyboard is that not working?
Sent From My Thugnificent SPH-D700 because its more than Magnificent
No, that's the problem I am having. I turn the phone off (either by going to power off while it's on or by pulling the battery out) and then if I try to hold 1 + power button nothing happens. If I put in the battery it automatically starts booting up as well, it doesn't just stay off like it should.
That's odd :what: you might have to order a download mode jig this will jump you into download mode
Actually its to bad your on mtd cuz acs recovery has the option to boot into download mode.

Yeah, I've never experienced anything like this so far and I read about the download mode jig method but I was just curious if there were anything I could try before I do that. Unfortunately it's not looking that way.

Try this plug in the phone into the pc with the battery out and try going into download mode with the computer as the power source
Sent From My Thugnificent SPH-D700 because its more than Magnificent
That works somewhat. I think I need to try a different USB cable though because if the cable moves a little the phone just turns back off as if it's not a very good connection. Also, when it says download mode and Odin is open it doesn't act as if anything is connected still.
EDIT: Okay, so I put in the battery and tried to boot into download mode and it worked properly! Still having an issue with Odin detecting my phone but that's more than likely a cable issue and I can easily find another one and try again. Thanks a bunch!

[Q] bricked? and won't power up (while trying to unroot)

I may have bricked my phone, and now won't power up at all. Here's what happened.
Last night I tried to unroot my phone in order to install EL30. First I powered phone into download mode. Then used Odin to install EC05, but Odin seemed to be taking forever, as the instructions said it would take 7-8 minutes... It appeared to be working but very slowly. So after half an hour, I decided to let it work overnight and went to bed, leaving the Odin screen running on computer and the phone with yellow "Downloading" on screen.
This morning, the Odin screen had several more lines of successful completed steps, but did not say "Finished" yet. The phone screen was off. I thought maybe the battery had died because perhaps in download mode maybe the battery wasn't charging? So I unplugged it from USB cord, put in a fully charged battery, and now to my problem...
Phone won't power up or do ANYTHING. I know of 3 methods to power up phone, (pwr button, #1 + pwr, volume up + camera + pwr) and none of them are doing anything. screen never changes from black. I've removed battery, tried powering up while plugged into usb/computer, with & without sd card, etc. It's like the phone is just broke!
HELP?!

To the OP:
Did you try leaving the battery out and having plugged into the back of the desktop *if of course its a desktop* and tried to go into download mode using the pc as its power source? Is it a nonstock cable that you used?. Its more than likely because you didn't have a non-stock cable or yours was bad and need a new one. Odin shouldn't take but 5 minutes top..... mine does it around 3:30 minutes..if it seems like its hangs then redo it pull the plug and start over. Usually factoryfs.rfs takes the longest around 2minutes.

To the OP:
Did you try leaving the battery out and having plugged into the back of the desktop *if of course its a desktop* and tried to go into download mode using the pc as its power source? Is it a nonstock cable that you used?.

I know what he's talking about he "thinks" inside that hole there's a reset button. There's not....

First get a better cable, that's why the data wouldn't transfer. 2nd take out the battery and sd card, with Odin up on the computer connect the New USB cable and quickly put it into download mode and Odin away. At this point include the PIT and check repartition. You will need to put the battery back in after it succeeds and tries to boot. For mor tips sea+ch the Development forum for "How to recover a semi-bricked epic" there is a whole thread on it.

No luck on any of the suggestions above. Phone will not power up at all.
I removed battery and SD card, and plugged into usb cable with Odin open on computer and tried powering up phone into Download Mode (#1 + pwr), nothing (also tried holding #1 + pwr for a couple minutes patiently).
I have had a nightmare trying to find a usb cable and usb port on my computer that work together. No this is not the stock Samsung cable. I am using a cable that has worked for me in the past, but often times a cable/port that works one day won't work the next. So you are probably right in that my original issue getting Odin to download to phone last night may have been a cable problem, however my current problem is simply that the phone seems to be nothing more than a paper weight right now. Just won't power up at all.
And no, I didn't have repartition checked. Phone only had been rooted and CMW, no MTD.
Thank you all for your help, and eagerly awaiting additional suggestions?
Umm yeah man bad idea leaving it alone looks like its time to visit the morgue.... search online to see if someone will restore a solid brick its possible especialy if you cannt use a jig to get into download mode
There are people who will hook up their pc to the main chip on the phone and restore it that way.

Yes, exactly this^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
It is like the phone goes into some kind of coma and popping the battery in and out while trying to get into download mode is CPR.

I'm no pro a bringin epics back from the dead but in his condition I believe the phone is completely dead. I've done this to my phone on several different occasions just to get my phone replaced lol. My good friend works for a sprint repair center and he said that most times pulling the usb during odin will kill the device. I'm not tring to be pessamistic as I really hope you fix it but from what your saying then its VERY VERY unlikely! Especially if you hit repartition and then pulled the cord... if you don't belive me then try it and let me know how it goes lol

Probably 4 out of 5 of these bricks caused by a failed Odin have come back to life by popping the battery in and out and trying to get into download mode. I can count the number that I have seen never come back on my hands. Some people give up to soon, others found leaving it overnight and trying again has worked. But a lot have been revived. Also he did not have repartition checked so has an even better chance.
When you try to put in download mode without the battery are you holding the buttons down while plugging the cable in? If not then do it that way

Man this sucks if any of the aforementioned methods dont work it sounds like you are going to have th make a JTAG to unbrick your phone i found this on the capitvate forums a while back been keeping it around just in case but you can give it a try. i have never had to try any of these methods so if you do let us know how it goes
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15330252#post15330252
if nothing else you can always try to take it to sprint and act like you have no idea what happened and dont mention anything about rooting and take your sd card out cause it contains root files
hope you get this worked out bud

Okay then take apart your phone and please take a picture of your non exisitent magical reset button.....there is no button never has been never will be..... people think there is because they usualy left their battery out long enough for the phone to lose charge.

Pulled Battery while in Download Mode - Now Won't turn on?? Any ideas

I had my T989 plugged in to USB, and my phone was in download mode. I wanted to reboot it, so I removed the battery and put it back in. Now it won't turn on. I tried different batteries and still nothing.
Is it bricked???
When I try using Volume up and down, and connect to USB, it makes a noise on my PC like its connected but then makes 2 noises like its disconnected.
What can I do?? HELP
EDIT
On system manager, it comes up as:
"HS-USB Diagnostics 9008"
If I purchased this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Download-Mo...ccessories&hash=item35b2e61b7d#ht_3861wt_1093
Would I be able to unbrick?
Thanks
Its probably bricked. Keep trying to see if you can get it, and if not try sending it back to T-Mobile and see if they'll send you another one

Pulling battery
Putting in batteryy, don't touch power, insert usb
Wait for signal on pc, try command
Adb devices
If so can you cut screen contents and paste here?

Adb logcat command aswell..

lol at least he was being nice enough to offer his help
Phone is hard bricked, normal tag from ebay will not help you.
You must send your phone to reflash , there are many places to do in US.
Price is near 50 $ and so.

I bet it can be rescued by pulling battery, keeping it out for a few minutes, putting it back in, holding volume +/- while inserting usb cable connected to computer.
5 min ago, i pulled battery when in download mode... brick....
Just flash ROM again and it works
