[Q] Saving nandroid to alternative storage?? - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Is it possible to have my nandroid saved to a computer via usb instead of sd?. While in recovery, I want the backup to be made on my computer. I don't have space on my sd for my 2.8gb nandroid. I hope my question is clear.

You can mount your SD card to PC and copy clockwork/backup to your PC then delete the ones you don't want on your SD card that way you have a backup of them on your PC. I'd always leave at least one on your SD card though. Hope that answers your question.

Actually that's what I do. But that's not quite what I mean.
I mean that when the backup is being made that it is being put on my computer directly without me having to manually moving it.

Don't think it's possible, since for that to happen, your recovery would have to support/activate a lot of hardware that it currently doesn't - it would have to activate either the USB port or the WiFi radio, connect to a network (in the case of WiFi) then support and mount an alternate file system (most likely FAT/32) so it could write directly to it. Without that, there's no way recovery could write to any external storage.
Not the answer you're looking for, but your best bet is probably to pick up another MicroSD card and just use that for backups. Alternately, I'm sure you can execute commands over ADB which would pull/push images of your varrious partitions - data, system, etc. directly from the phone to your computer, but it would be more of a manual operation, not automated like in recovery.

I figured it would be a bit of a near impossible process. I plan on getting a 32gb. Well it was wishful thinking.

Can I rename my CWM nandroid backups?
Bit of a hijack, but can you rename CWM Nandroid backups to something more descriptive than the date/time format it uses by default? I used to rename Amon-Ra backups on my old Eris, but think I read somewhere that CWM doesn't like that. Is that true?

Yes, you can certainly rename CWM backups, I do it all the time. You can do it within Rom Manager, or through any file explorer/manager. If you do it outside Rom Manager however, it seems to break the MD5 check of that backup. But you can always fix that in terminal emulator by navigaating to the effected backup's folder and entering the following command:
md5sum *img > nandroid.md5
This will check the img's and write out a new nandroid.md5 file. I keep Rom Manager installed just to rename backups though, it's just easier.

New SD card

Greetings
Back with a new question I have just bought a new SD card, 8gb, i have not yet used it though and what i wanna know is how to copy my current SD apps, data saves etc etc to my new card! I basically have the 2GB on my phone with 500mb partition and full of apps (around 50-60) and thing is i cant re-download them cause i dont have WiFi connection and all my current ones where downloaded from my friends house xD
I just want my new card to have the exact same things like my current one just 6 more GB of memory
Also how can i increase the 500mb partition to 1gb?
thx a lot
ps: i dont have an SD adaptor with me atm but i will from monday
install amon_ra's recovery image 1.5.2 if not already done. make a nandroid + ext backup, copy everything from sdcard to pc, switch sdcards, plug in usb cable, turn back on to recovery, enter on pc:
adb shell
sdparted -es 1024M -ss 0
copy everything back sdcard, restore nandroid backup.
HI there
what i did that i pluged my hero with original SD card(2GB) and copyed all the contents to new desktop folder in my computer, then turned off my Hero and took ot the 2GB original card out and inserted new 8GB SDHC card in and copy back all the contents from my new desktop folder.
and Hero working fine as before reseted hero few time no problem
I do not i have done it right way or not
please can someone tell did i do it right way or any other way to do sd card swap?
Thanks

@Kendong2
i have amon_ra 1.3.2, does it work with that?
adb shell
sdparted -es 1024M -ss 0
is this for memory partition? can i do that without the use of pc since everytime i tried with adb i failed
Btw how should i install amon_ra 1.3.2? With Flash Recovery? If yes, do you know what "version" supports installing? I have 9/9/09 version but it is the fixed version and it doesnt work
@gugi_sat
You copied everything apart from apps (if u had it partitioned) i guess
thats what i had done but my apps werent copied, but if your apps were on ur internal memory then u copied everything completely

see here for installation. you can use the first option since you have the image already installed. should work with 1.3.2 also, but it doesn't support ext4. word is that ext2 is recommended for the partition, as it doesn't stress the sdcard as much as ext3 or 4 does. you can do it on a pc, but you need to find out in what order to create the partitions, 1. ext 2. fat or vice-versa.

correct.
if i partitioned with 1.3.2 Amon_ra i should have an SD with fat32 + ext2 + swap...
so my apps are on ext2, the best ext i could possibly have them? so i shouldnt download newest amon ra?
so, how do i make a nandroid backup? my nandroid v2.2 says only backup, does that mean apps aswell? also after backup, i copy my files to my pc, put new SD card, copy backup folder on SD and restore backup on new card?

better update to 1.5.2, i can confirm that it works perfectly with an ext2 partition if you select nandroid + ext. have been switching roms all day
use the commands i gave you, then the swap partition won't be created, it is not used in mcr3.0.
with 1.5.2 you can also use ext3 or 4, but it is said to age the sdcard faster. i use ext2 on my card.
i hope i CAN update to 1.5.2 >.> i had used 3-4 different versions of Flash Rec in order to get it done
I dont have nandroid + ext so i guess i NEED 1.5.2?:/
When u switch roms and backup you KEEP the apps?
I have MCR2.9 btw, should i update amon ra to 1.5.2, backup, copy the backup, flash 3.0 and then restore backup on my new SD?>.>
i dont need ext3 and 4 anw whats the difference (and use) of them anw?:S
thx for helping so far btw
if you have amon_ra now you can update. see post #5 in this thread.
with nand+ext you keep the apps, that is the beauty of it. make a backup wipe all, test whatever roms you like, after that restore and you're back. it's like having a second hero.
if you make a backup, then flash a rom, then restore your backup you have flashed for nothing. if you want to update your rom make a backup, update the rom, if everything works you can delete the backup. can't be this hard...?
its not....
i just have 2.73 hero and flashrec doesnt work on my hero
i installed amon ra A LONG time ago (even before i realised what rooting was, LOL, i didnt know what i actually did >.>)
and as far as am concerned i tried various versions of flashrec and only one worked i am trying now with various flashrec versions.. 09/09/09, 09/11/07 etc etc but i cant get one to work

select the "move recovery.log to sd" menu item after you got the error message, then reboot your phone, mount to pc and find recovery.log on your sdcard. give it to us.

are you sure you have the latest recovery image? 1.5.2 should contain nandroid v2.2.2, since there were problems with the ext part in v2.2.1.
edit: check it by doing "adb shell mount" while the phone is powered up (not in recovery!). if your result contains a line like this:
/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 on /system/sd type ext2 (rw,noatime,nodiratime,errors=continue)
then you have an ext partition. the bold part is where you can see which type it is.
also if you don't know if you have an ext partition you most certainly do not have on, in this case why would you try to back it up?

bump with a new question...
i noticed that my SD card is running rather slow, is it a faulty one or should it run properly?
Its a SanDisk 8gb Class 2! Is class 2 really that slower? My old one was 2gb Class 4 and it wasnt running smoothly but not that slow :S
The shop manager told me that i can replace it or "upgrade" it to a better Class card.. Should i just replace it or get an 8GB Class 4/6?
thx

you could try replacing, but by definition class 6 should be faster than class 2 or 4. whether this has an effect on your phone, or if it is only marketing fairy tales, or manufacturer lies, who can tell for sure? it varies from card to card, from manufacturer to manufacturer, if i were you i'd get a class 6 card.

Changing to class 10 SD card, need backup

I'm using Modaco R8, and a 16GB microSD card class 2. got annoyed with it and decided to change to 8GB class 10.
I'm using the EXT partition of 512 mb using ROM manager on the class 2 card so all of my apps are installed there. I need to know how do i backup all the apps in it and transfer it directly to the class 10 card without any changes whatsoever.
Please specify any step clearly and if possible the easiest and simplest way to do it.
Thanks!
copy them over using linux, or use a program called android commander to back them up then restore them
have release Class 10 Micro SD?
terrible....I only saw on normal SD with class 10
this is what you do..
- boot into your recovery image (more than likely clockword recovery)
- go to the nandroid menu
- perform a backup
once that's all done.. copy the contents of the SD card (don't worry about the sd-ext stuff, that's all safe in the nandroid backup) to your PC/Mac.
- stick your new sd card into your phone and partition it.
- once that's done, copy the contents back from your pc to the new card.
- go back into your recovery image
- restore from the nandroid backup.
done!

I heard bout this method, wouldnt it change anything to my ROM if restoring the nandroid backup just for the sd-ext stuffs? this one or the linux one is easiest and reliable?
Seriously guys, learn how to use Ubuntu, won't take more than an hour of your time to learn the basic tricks on how to copy + paste between ext partitions. I just booted up with Ubuntu, stuck both cards in, parititoned and then copied and pasted between both cards, and was done in minutes. No issues after putting it back in the Desire.

Yes. There is no decent and free methods on windows. You are better off using ubuntu.

yup
just make sure the card is partitioned correctly and then copy the titanium backup folder with all the programs in it to the sd
Make sure that in titanium backup preferences, Force to same location is checked
start up the program and run the batch restore all apps + data.
Do not restore system data, only apps.
You can use the recovery (from Windows or whatever). After all, it's a linux. Just boot in recovery and issue commands with adb shell:
Code:
adb shell
You need to install SDK and perform that command from the tools directory. If you have troubles here consult the SDK documentation.
Once there you can use the build-in tar to do the backup. This is an example with ClockworkMod. YMMV with others.
Code:
mount /sd-ext
mount /sdcard
cd /sd-ext
tar cvzf /sdcard/a2sd_backup.tar.gz *
To restore:
Code:
<same mount and cd stuff>
tar xvzf /sdcard/a2sd_backup.tar.gz
Also, ClockworkMod's Nandroid backup automatically makes a backup of the sdcard. You can do a complete backup and then restore it using the new sd card when correctly partitioned.

Well, Ubuntu is painless to use. There's a GUI, and there's no need to type funny DOS-like lines, and you don't even need to boot it from your computer. Create a flashdrive with Ubuntu, and you won't even know it was there! This is coming from a guy who has never touched Linux his entire life, until I got my Desire and started rooting!
haha ok ok guys, i really appreciate all the answers, giving me the extra knowledge. and i'm gonna use the linux method.
but i'm interested in using the adb command, which i got confused the very first i tried installing the SDK..i saw too many steps and i got confused.

Changing SD cards question...

Guys,I recently bought a Desire HD and have the following issue.I have a Kingston 16gb Class 10 SD card in my Desire and I want to use it with my DHD.However,I have an ext4 partition on my Desire's card and have ReflexTSense HD 1.4.1 Apps2SD+ version installed. Now,If I make a Nandroid backup of my rom, copy ALL of the card's content to my HDD(including the nandroid backup) and then copy it all to a new card(partitioned with a 1gb ext4 partition) will I be able to restore the nandroid backup normally after a full wipe or does it need another procedure?
Thanks!
Using Titanium Backup should work nicely. Or failing that, if you are using ClockworkMod Recovery you should be able to copy and paste to the new SD, make an EXT3 partition, then just restore the EXT3 partition using the advanced setting.
I was thinking of trying some other roms prior to restoring...Anyway,that is without losing any of my data, right? And what about the things I asked?

You want to restore your Desires nandroid to your DHD? I would be surprised if that was possible. The Desires DHD ROMs are ported so they are different to the stock ROMs of the DHD.
When I got my DHD I just started afresh, installed all apps from new, as the DHD has around 1.1 gig of internal memory you really don't need the EXT3 partition on SD card anymore.

I want to try some other roms on my Desire(NOT HD) and change my SD card at,let's say,the same time.If I flash a rom from another card, would I be able to restore a backup that was just copied to the new one,or would I have to reinsert the card I am using now?
I know I am saying it too complicated, sometimes not even I can understand what I'm saying!
But to be more understandable...Say I make a nandroid backup now,ok?I copy it from my SD to my HDD(Hard Disk Drive,my PC,in case you don't know what it stands for.Damn I must stop using this many acronyms! ).Then I change my SD card to a new one(partitioned and stuff) and flash another rom from a zip in the new card. After that,am I able to just copy the nandroid backup I did in the beginning to my new SD card and restore?
Thanks!
Lmao, I literally had to read that twice! Using nandroid, as long as you flash the ROM that it was backed up from first, and then restore you will be fine to install any ROM. Just copy Clockworkmod/backup/(filenamehere) from your SDcard and you can drag and drop it into any SDcard and restore/backup from it.

Is that correct, this is what i used to do with my ogevo.
Also can i rename my backups? on my evo anytime i did that and tried a restore it hAD some issue with md5.

Renaming has been hit or miss for me
Hit the thanks button if I helped you
I'm not sure about partitioning.
You can rename your clockworkmod backups but they cannot contain ANY spaces in the filename.
For some reason, I cannot copy nandroids via the usb cable to my pc because if I ever copy them back, they fail the MD5 and it's a PIA to repair them. So to resolve this I have to combine all my nandroids to external SD, pull the card and mount it in a reader on the pc. If I ever need to copy any of those back to the phone, I do the reverse (pull SD, mount on pc, copy files back over).
Also, I always format the SD on the phone, never through the pc to make sure the file system is correct for the phone.
Starting totally clean for me involves no backup of any kind. Its a longer process but worth the time if you have a rom you know you will run for a long time.
Since I wipe all my data anyway, I usually use Tulu to backup my apps and thats about it. you can partition anyway you choose, however partitioning is not neccesary at all. just create a folder on the SD named "ROM" and place any roms you want to flash in it. creating partitions would make your like a bit more difficult. but if you do I reccommend allocation at least 3-4GB for roms.

[Q] Need help attempting to recover data from my GN :(

Phone:
GN Toro (Verizon)
no OS currently installed!
TWRP 2.3.3 (I know, needs to be updated)
Skip to the bold text for the TLDR version.
So here's the story... I was going to flash the latest AOKP and decided that this time I would do things right! In the past I had almost always dirty flashed, but this time I was going to start clean and only restore data for a handful of apps. So I booted into TWRP and wiped cache, dalvik cache, system, and ..........internal storage! I went to flash the ROM I had downloaded and that's when I learned that I had made a huge mistake :crying:
So I've been doing a TON of reading; I think I've found a solution to my problem in this thread.
I know I can either use ADB push to reload the ROM or use ODIN mode to reflash (although I was unable to get ODIN to see my phone). My concern is that if I'm going to have any chance recovering my files, I need to avoid writing to /sdcard at all costs.
So here's my question, is there a way to get a binary dump of /sdcard aka /media/data without first installing android? I need to be able to do so from TWRP or fastboot. I have the GN toolkit but I don't see any way of doing this. I also have all the drivers installed and working (or so it seems) and ADB installed.
Sorry I misread. I'm not sure how you can recover from that.
I think you should be able to adb push a ROM to it. Flash it and it won't touch the contents of the SD card.

Actually, this is exactly what I did. The new ROM wrote a directory structure and various files to /sdcard, hopefully none of those writes overwrote the data I'm trying to recover...
16GB thumb drive and USB OTG cable. Boot into recovery and use dd to dump the user data partition to the thumb drive.
Probably too late for that, since you've already written files to the partition.

Ya know, I have a huge thumb drive and a USB-OTG adapter, I never even thought of this! Thanks, if I ever need to do this again I will try that.
I was able to recover most if not all of my pics (the only thing I cared about losing) using this guide I linked above.
Glad that method worked. It's kind of scary with GN having a single data partition and no ext sd. Coming from a device with separate /data and /sdcard partitions plus and ext sd, I miss being able to back things up onto the card.
