New Update: Icenight89 made this into a cwm flashable fix. Great work bro

Update. I fixed it !!
I was goofing with chroot / Linux in the loop which apparently caused my issue. Random things appear to cause it as any root application can modify this partition ( I'd bet to keep the screen from locking with the screen timing out as it could interrupt a long install ). Neither Nandroid backups , Odining to stock, or factory resets touch the /efs partition. I would absolutely reccommend manually copying the contents somewhere using a root explorer (making a safe backup)!!! We need to talk to the creater of our cwm to see if they can add /efs in the nandroid backup process.
Here is how to fix power menu on long press :
Use a root explorer and paste this file to /efs/imei
( don't worry its just a string and a value )
http://db.tt/Pk2U8Nws
This file also fixes lock screen. Just reboot!!
Hope this helps a few of you out ! If so please drop me a thanks ! :-D Also go to the Dewizzed thread under android development and thank RK ( RoyalKnight ). I couldn't have figured this out without him giving me a dump of his good efs partition to compare it to !!

Hello,
I seldom post looking for assistance or guidance, however im at my wits end with this phone. I was using the linux installer on the market ( Chrooted Linux subsystem ) and in the process borked my rom. I reinstalled from backup and I have no power button pop up menu for shutting down. It immediately kills / shuts off the phone without a confirmation if you hold the power button for a second.
What i have tried:
Nandroid backups ( Both stock and prior custom installs )
I Odin'd to stock
I Odin'd CWM
I reinstalled the radio via cwm
Installed fresh roms to test
Ive looked all over the web and it looks like some others had the same problem and fixed it by taking a photo ( yes its odd but its fixed others ) and enable/disable secure credentials. Neither of those have resolved the issue.
Does anyone else have any ideas? The phone runs fine aside from the power button no longer having a menu. I put my phone in my pocket and have had it pop up to shut down in the past.... im positive it will get turned off if i dont constantly check to see if its on.
Any ideas? I saw somewhere where another dev created an advanced power menu adding recovery / reboot to the menu. There has to be a way to re-bind it to the power button!
Oh, and i just checked. I have no lock screen either! Ugh!
Ive had this same issue, you must have used one of the "secret codes" for the phone to disable it.
Type *#*#7594#*#* from dialer and hit dial then uncheck the only option that appears...to re enable lockscreen and power menu
I tried to test but it doesn't work for me anymore I'm guessing cause I'm now running juggs and the dev removed that particular option but I had the EXACT same problem the first month I had the phone and was on stock rom it had me frustrated beyond reason I'm a very security conscious person and lock screen not functioning is simply unacceptable.
If the code doesn't work try searching "7594 t989" or something as im positive this is your issue and that is the right code but I'm not positive of the "#*" order in the code. Try it, and if it actually dials out instead of taking you to a hidden menu its wrong.
Please hit thanks if I've helped you! =]

Well, It was already unchecked sadly. What part of the firmware controls this? I thought it would be radio but ive already flashed a new radio....... it shouldnt be persistant.
I checked it, rebooted, unchecked it rebooted.... still the same. ugh. I gave you a thanks anyway. Any other ideas?
My last shot will be to flast an ATT kernel/radio/rom via Odin if i dont have any other options. Im hoping it should wipe out this issue
The interesting thing is Golocker will work with golauncher installed :/
Well I'm completely befuddled man I appreciate the thanks but when I heard you describe the literal EXACT same problem I had I was certain it was the same thing. Perhaps its the fault of the custom rom that the option is unticked but actually on? I suppose the issue could be originating from another source but with symptoms as specific as yours (both lock screen and power menu gone) it makes me think it may still be connected to what I mentioned. I'm no dev tho so I can't give you much technical support. Hopefully others see this thread and can go on what we have discussed. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed the fix didn't work since we had the same issue that obviously is a deal breaker.
Your saying its the radio cause you flashed nandroid and didn't fix issue?
I remember flashing a nandroid as well and it didn't help at all.

Unfortunately this isnt a rom related issue. I was thinking that MAYBE the radio controlled it but even that im not so sure of anymore. I even had the exact same issue when I reverted back to stock via Odin...... Sigh
I actually flashed everything possible via Odin ( recovery , stock image , stock kernel , stock radio )
Looks like im stuck using Go Launcher + Go Locker until i can figure this out ( yes i am a security conscious person too )
Here is what i installed https://market.android.com/details?id=com.galoula.LinuxInstall&hl=en
I may need an expert on what exactly the linux installer does to our devices >.> I was under the impression that it used the loop interface and ran the guest OS off of /data. Apparently something deeper went on there

Hmmmmmmm did you read my OP?
I appreciate the input but im well beyond just factory resetting it. Ive already reverted to backups via CWM, Ive flashed new roms via CWM, Ive used Odin and flashed back to stock kernels / OS, Ive flashed a new CWM. Ive flashed new radios via CWM, And of course wiped data/cache/dalvik/system/ext-sd. My partitions were wiped, ( All to include my data storage and SD card )
Any other possible suggestions?
Research shows that /efs Might have something to do with the lock screen. Playing around with it now ( its the 1 partition which doesn't get touched during Odin / cwm flashes )

I've read your post. The same thing happened to me. After a fresh flash, no power menu, no lockscreen, reboot after touching power button. Again, factory reset fixed it.

FWIW, I have the same symptoms (no lock screen, no power menu) running on rooted stock rom and can say that factory reset has not fixed it, nor has any of the other fixes in threads discussing this issue (*# codes, etc). Still looking for a solution, but wanted to clarify that there doesn't seem to be "one master fix" for people experiencing the issue
Are you referring to the factory reset within the settings menu ? I haven't tried that yet but I have used cwm's factory reset to no avail. I've odin'd back to stock which should be better than a factory reset as it rewrites all partitions ( efs aside ). Ill try it now and report back

Hi there, I'm looking into it but I think we suffer from a corrupt efs partition. I know our phone isn't the 9100 but it appears to be common there. I have someone dumping their efs for me and I'm going to wipe mine and replace it with his. I've researched and there are only two files I'd need to rewrite ( and nv data doesn't appear to be there...odd )
I'm going to get creative and see if i can't figure this out for us. I've used an efs backup tool to back mine up, format and restore mine already so I know we have access to the partition.
We do have a ton of memory blocks / partitions so I'm hoping the issue isn't with one of the others. If the efs isn't it, I'm going to look at the dump someone posted to try to figure this out ( replacing mine one by one after creating a dump of mine first )

Funny you should mention efs and post about it so quickly. After my post, i started reading through some of the other threads on the subject during lunch and found this post which talks about a missing file in the /efs directory which i hadn't noticed before:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19388122&postcount=19
All the other threads were talking about test modes and other random things which I *may* have done, but had no memory of. The post about efs struck a cord and I do remember messing with the files there for no good reason when I first got the phone and having made a backup of the directory.
Looking through my backup, I saw a number of files that were no longer in /efs, including the /efs/imei/keystr file containing nothing but the word ON. I quickly copied over the missing files from my backup to /efs using Total Commander (my favorite file manager) and without even a reboot, both the lock screen and power menu have returned.
Coming back to this thread to update my previous message, you were already going down the same path. I have a feeling only the keystr file was needed in my case, but I restored everything to be a) safe and b) if I can't remember what I was doing in /egs, it obviously wasn't useful or important.
This fixed my problem, hopefully it will fix yours as well. I will post a listing of what was in my working and non-working /efs later today for further reference

/efs differences
Reviewing the contents of /efs between my original copy and what was currently on my phone, the following 4 files were missing from my /efs directory:
/efs/cryptprop_rebootMode : 1 byte file, empty
/efs/cryptprop_sdcard : 5 byte file with the word NULL
/efs/imei/bt.txt - 23 byte file with the word bt_macaddr:HEXBTMACADDR
/efs/imei/keystr - 2 byte file with the word ON
If someone can create a sticky master thread for known lockscreen & power menu causes and tested solutions, it would be AMAZING!

Doesn't work for everyone!
A factory reset only wipes /data /cache /sd-ext. When you install a new rom generally those are replaced as well as /system. Using Odin , those plus the radio are wiped clean and replaced.
My friend just copied his /efs for me. He used a tool to create a backup ( efs.img ) and just by creating the backup, it created the no lockscreen / power menu symptom. /Efs absolutely has something to do with this problem. He fixed his issue by copying the backup from his sd card to the /efs partition so this is looking promising. I'm copying files back and forth testing as I write this.
I may have found the cause and solution ! :-D

I'm pretty sure your issue was due to a borked install of a program or the rom. Since you noted your lockscreen disappeared as well. Also your power button causes a reboot while ops is a power down. the factory reset is already what op did by wiping data and cache from recovery. Nice input though, all ideas are welcomed on these types of threads!!!

Welcome,
I've compiled ClockWorkMod 3.0.1.4 and I made some changes to it, copying BlaY0's work for the HTC Legend.
Changes:
Removed menu entries for updating via /sdcard/update.zip
[*]Stripped some "No" line entries from confirmation menus (only 1 left)
[*]Removed some insane size values from partitioning list
[*]Recovery is closed using pkill instead of ps and grep
Installation
Code:
Copy the desired update.zip to your sdcard and apply it from ClockWorkMod
Extras:
Install noconfirm to remove the "no" lines. Works on all clockworkmod-based recoveries.
Thanks to BlaY0, Cyanogen and Koush
Thanks. Thanks a ton! You actually addressed what annoyed me most with this recovery. I have to admit, I do miss RA on the Vision...
But no complaining here, thanks for your work!
Edit: Ugh, I don't get it with the .no_confirm file. Put it where...?
Going to try this, sounds good =))

So this still has the fix for power off while charging? And just the menu for sdcard update has been removed that can be noticed other than that, the other two updates to it is file size or so??

Hey hey! I like what you've done with the source file. I was using your recovery while in the process of making a backup and thought it was pretty neat because I couldn't for the life of me figure out where and what to edit in source since nothing is commented out by anyone. I can read the code but have a difficult time tracing it through. I'm still newbie with the C++
But anyways, while backing up, I was reminded of how annoying it is to backup the system, data, cache, sd-ext, boot, and etc folders into img files for every backup of CM7 when the only thing that really needs to be backed up is the data folder to data.img which contains all the userdata, settings and applications downloaded from the market. The only exception would be if I had changed keymap files, changed stuff inside /system/app/ folder, or any other folder/files other than data since the previous backup of the same rom.
So, if I was to make ONE backup of CM7 Tuesday morning, and wanted to make a backup of the very same rom later on in the day (containing more recent apps, emails, settings, etc. ) I would have to delete the old backup already saved and start the backup process over again from the beginning, or I would have to keep making duplicates of the same backup that differs only by the data.img file, wasting precious space on a baby **** sized microsd. IMO it completely ruins the purpose of the automatic backup feature of Rom Manager since I have to remind myself to delete the previous backup everyday. However, I do think it'll be useful if clockworkmod can be modified.
SO, I was wondering, where should I be looking in the source to add an option such as "backup data only",
that when selected,
1.) Looks for an extra line in the md5sum file for every folder in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ that specifies the android version (cm7, cm6, date, w/e)
2.) Compares extra line with what it's about to back up (via contents of /system/build.prop ) and
3.) if they match up
calls only the function that backs up the data folder excluding calls for the backup of system, cache, boot, etc.
Sorry, if its confusing how I've explained it. Its quite late here in soFla, and I didn't get no sleep 8(
But I'm sure you get what I mean considering that you know some code. That's a very rough pseudo-code I guess.
Another method that probably is a lot easier, if possible, would be to figure out what command/message Rom-Manager leaves behind for clockworkmod before rebooting to clockworkmod. If it is a small script like I hope it is, backing up only data.img would be a heck of a lot easier since I'm pretty sure the source has an individual definition call for backup for each partition.
so how do i fix this powering on issue.. its starting to piss me off -.- lol,. least how to fix it on stock recovery.

I think this issue is caused by the hardware on the desire z and thus is unfixable. If you press power off from the menu will it just power on again? Because then the entry should be renamed to reboot recovery.

I understand the issue. I do have an idea for you which I will work on later today. It's an update.zip with a script in it which will yaffs up the data partition and put the data.img into /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/*foldername*/
Next is should take the md5sum and write it to md5sums.txt
Like this you can restore your backup. I can cook you a custom recovery which has added update from /sdcard/update.zip baked in, but changed to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backupdata.zip
I know this isn't the easiest way to do it, but it is the easiest to code for me, so I'll use it untill I expand my knowledge

Nah I'm on a Desire Z so it's the same. Since this does not happen on other devices, the problem isn't caused by clockworkmod. The bootloader is just coded to boot into recovery when AC plugs in. I don't know if this happen the stock recovery as well. It could be caused by gfree, but also it could just be that the stock recovery forces the system to be shut down. Whatever it is, we won't be able to fix it..

Damn... Why are you so OG? I would appreciate that so much. How many source files were actually modified from the original clockworkmod source? If its not many, would you mind commenting out some important bits of code so I can pick up from somewhere when looking through the code and have a better understanding of the basic/general algorithm used by the original dev? Its cool if you don't though lol. I still appreciate what you've already put together.

actually, it DOES happen on other devices, and it IS a clockwork issue that, to my knowledge, Koush is aware of and is looking to fix. Before I came to the g2, I had a red mytouch 4g which, when rooted and CWM was installed, would boot into recovery from a powered down state when it connected to the charger. The explanation I heard back then was that the stock recovery for the phone would boot up upon connecting to a charger while off, but that it would somehow keep the screen off. however, when the recovery is replaced with CWM, it still exhibits this behavior, but it does not keep the screen off.
Just an fyi, though, in the mexDroid forum OP, there is a modded version of CWM which, when installed, will keep the phone off while charging. I have personally verified that it works (now if only someone would find a way to have android start up and shut down at preset times, like to have an alarm go off.. that would be awesome).
Would it be safe to assume that this'll also work on my galaxy tab?

no, that's a bit of a stretch, as each recovery is made for the device that uses it, not device-agnostic. However, if you would like to try it out and dont mind taking the risk, you never know, you could get lucky.
mt4g?
Currently loving this on my G2 is there any chance of it becoming compatible for the mytouch 4G?

If you've poked a bit with the Play and you've done a hard-reset (wiped the /data and /cache partition in CWM) later on, you'll find that you have a different wallpaper and that the Home button dies. This makes custom ROMs impossible to keep in the long run, since every hard reset would kill said button, and of course, when you make custom ROMs you wipe your phone quite frequently.
Has anyone investigated which can be the cause of this behavior? My guess is that there's something in the /data partition which should be left untouched, in order to preserve the Home button. What's your take?
I doubt it, on more than one occation i have fastboot erased /system /boot /data. And have never lost home button functionality. Maybe its something CWM is doing wrong?

I have reproduced the issue using the standard (aka, the GUI-activated) hard reset method as well. Home button dies.
Ive read flashing Gapps after the wipe repairs the home button?
That can work in CM7... but what if you're using a stock rom as a base? (which was the GP2Xperia case)
When you wipe, of course you're going to have a different wallpaper. Home button keeps working just fine, no matter how many times you wipe. I suspect you're using a CM7 ROM, which for a time had the home button not working.
Flash to stock and it will be fine.
Perhaps it'd be good to link the GP2Xperia thread: I'm noticing I wasn't alone in those issues.

So maybe it's something you added or took away from your rom thats causing the issue?

And that gets me back to the Start square: considering that I've added nothing, and I've only substracted things, whose wiping is killing the Home button?
I believe it's something stored on data not system that causes the issue

My home button wasn't working on CM7 until I re-installed g-apps.
'Setup Wizard' is required to "activate" home button
How's the APK called? I can't find it with Titanium Backup.

so did it work?
It does work. The Setup thing itself looks funny as I've chopped half of the things, but the Home button works as intended. So, if you want to do a custom Rom, make sure that SEMCSetupWizard.apk is in the System folder!
.Just broke my home button deleting apks on stock rom. Re added as posted works fine again
Hey,
How can i do a Full Reinstall of the OS clean install,
Thank You

I have figured out that there is something wrong with my phone only when I have CWM5/6 flashed. So this leads me to believe that I need to clean out anything at all that is being left behind after certain flashes. (I get past my unbootable pixelated screen with one ROM that uses the original recovery)
So my question is how can I totally obliterate any and all files left behind or that were damaged by something from a custom flashed ROM?
On top of this question, I am wondering what ROMs are out there in the .tar.md5 file format so that I could use Download Mode to flash another ROM and at least have a working phone??
I find all the ROMs available but only in .zip format.
Sammy firmwares and use Odin.

Return phone to LITERAL factory state
I guess I should have been more clear.
What I mean that I would like to do, is to wipe out ANYTHING on the phone. Completely blank it as if it just rolled off the line. Then install the entire hidden partitions that samsung would do plus then add a new firmware.
The reason is that I cannot use CWM6 and my phone is an expensive paper weight right now. The problem arises from the fact that there has only been one ROM that actually worked for me from the beginning. That is the Bio360, and well originally the factory setup. Since I cannot use CWM and cannot flash a zip which Bio360 comes in. I have no way to enjoy the ROM or my phone for that matter. I have spent about a 100 hours flashing in all sorts of order and arrangements of kernels, ROMS and recovery files using every odin program I could find. Plus I have done about an equal amount of searching in between trying to figure out what has caused the issue. However, since my issue is localized then I would like to return my phone to LITERAL factory state.
Is it possible to format EVERYTHING and rewrite all of the necessary files? THAT would be a complete wipe by my definition.
Thanks for any help people.
I repeat Sammy firmwares had the stock files for you to flash via Odin. It is what you are asking for. Flash one of those roms then do a factory reset or format all partitions. Should be all nice and clean.

Take a backup of \efs before attempting to format everything.

Thanks for the reply. I already have all of the stock firmwares, but the thing is that that only flashes the actual software that a user uses daily. There is still boot software, recovery files and others within the hidden partition. A bit like a laptop keeps a partition or seperate small hard drive specifically just for a recovery and wipe clean of everything.
I was hoping that perhaps there is a possibility of startin with a clean slate, then re-writing all pertinent information back into the device, then putting the stock ROM etc back.
Again, the reason that I was thinking this would be my last hope is that everytime I use the CWM or anything other than a single ICS with a particular order of flashing the Cranium kernel without Auto-Reboot and then using the NAND Erase All and the other two checked can I get a ROM to work. The challenge is that now after I have got the phone back up and running without the CWM and with ICS is that it will not read a SIM card. I was thinking it was a hardware issue until after another 10 hours of trying various arrangements of flashable files, I finally got the device to not only boot into ICS, but after leaving it for 6 hours I 'awoke' it and it had loaded all the files and I got past the, black screen with pull down menu. I finally had a ROM that worked again even after my green and red pixelated screen issue. That leads me to believe again that it must be a software issue again. Not a hardware.
Thus leading me to think about any other options to literally start the device from scratch. Boot loading files, hidden files, etc etc. Literally EVERYTHING.
Excuse me, this might be a silly question, but as I've read no mention of it: Have you tried KIES?
Many a borked phone has been saved by an emergency recovery through KIES, or so I've been lead to believe. Perhaps it can help you in some way?
Seeing how you're the only one reporting this problem it seems far more likely to be a hardware issue. Maybe your internal drive is damaged? But I do hope I'm wrong in that regard. Anyway, if you haven't already, give KIES a try. It seems impossible to make things worse than they already are.
Good luck!
PS: You could also try the ICS-Leak, as it's a one-click executable containing bootloaders. Might fix whatever's messed up...?

I borked my Glide trying different ROMs a little while back and Kies is what brought it back to life. There is an option for firmware updates right below the emergency recovery option that asks you for the model and serial number of your phone. Takes a while but I watched it repartition and flash the hidden partition during the process. Brought the software back to out of the box. HTH.

I have the freeze problem, i try a lot of think (kies doesnt even start to flash), maybe is because the storage from rogers is only 4gb and the rom try to access like a 8gb storage, i dont know, when i flash GB, in the recovery menu, i see a meesage that cant access something. I hope someone can help us. Only ICS works, but, without root or any custom recovery.
I think that it need a clean install, atotal wipe.
THe Kies Give me this error, so i cant try if that can fix the problems

If I'm posting this in the wrong place I apologize in advance. I'm also a bit freaked out since my phone seems to be kaput right now, but I have faith this is fixable. I need some of you professionals to give me your advice on how to go about fixing this.
Okay here we go...
I have in the past rooted my phone without any major issues by just reading this awesome site. I recently used "SPH-D710_FI27_CL1127689_Rooted_NoData" to root my phone using the one click method and everything was working fine. I realize now that I should have backed up all of my user data on the phone prior to updating to ICS from Gingerbread.
So, I think I made a newbie mistake by actually using Titanium Backup Pro (updated to latest version) to restore 1 file called wallpaper from the date 03/2012 (March 2012) which was when my phone was using Gingerbread 2.3.4 I think. I remember hitting the restore button and getting an option to restore only the data, so I chose this and a notification said, "Reboot phone for changes to take effect". Once the phone rebooted I unlock the screen and see the wallpaper I had from earlier this year. Now, I think the main problem is that I'm now using Ice Cream Sandwhich 4.0.4 and restoring the wallpaper from Gingerbread 2.3.4 has caused some underlying issues which is causing my phone to constantly reboot.
I went to the Sprint store and explained the issue and the Sprint representative said my phone needed to be reset because it seems to be glitching out. I informed him that I had files on my phone that I wanted to try to backup to my computer before I completely wipe the phone. Now, I'm home and I'm trying to get my phone to pop up in Windows 7 x64. I keep getting USB connection errors while connecting my phone to my PC because the phone keeps constantly rebooting while the drivers are trying to install then as soon as the phone reboots the driver installation fails.
USB Device Not Recognized
SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device failed installation
So I've tried uninstalling Samsung Kies and the USB drivers and then re-installing them and rebooting. Still no joy because my phone keeps constantly rebooting. It is never going to complete installing because the phone is completely unstable at this point in time. Further research led me to updating the MTP from Microsoft. After installing this I rebooted. Problem is I'm still getting connection issues while trying to connect my Epic 4G Touch to my PC because the drivers are not able to install because of the constant reboots, even though they were installed previously. This is how I was able to root my phone to begin with.
So basically what I'm trying to do is backup my files on my phone to my computer (which it now may be too late) before I just completely reflash a fresh ROM (Full Restore on FI27) and start over from scratch.
I had the idea of actually reapplying "SPH-D710_FI27_CL1127689_Rooted_NoData" to hopefully reset the kernel so I could backup my phone to my computer. This hasn't resulted in any changes whatsoever either. I'm completely stumped and would really appreciate some wisdom here.
I hope all of this makes sense and I hope someone out there is nice enough to take a little time to point me in the right direction.
I have just placed the phone in download mode with the idea of re-downloading "SPH-D710_FI27_CL1127689_Kernel" and USB drivers have been installed successfully.
Nice to see this thread is getting some views, but no one has any advice to give me?
What files on your phone do you need?
I just got the Phone to show up in Windows Explorer by plugging in the USB cable right when the Yellow 4G came up and I was browsing the phone and I noticed the SD Card was not showing up, but before long the phone rebooted and I'm still trying to access the phone but the damn thing keeps rebooting constantly.
I'm just trying to backup photos I don't have backed up anywhere else. Other than that I'm hoping I can do a full restore using "SPH-D710_FI27_CL1127689_Rooted_Restore" and that will at least get my phone back to operating normally right?
Just go into the recovery menu and do a factory reset. It won't format your SD card.

m4xwellmurd3r thanks for the advice.
I got impatient and went ahead and flashed "SPH-D710_FI27_CL1127689_Rooted_Restore" and my phone is back to operating normally. My SD card is still intact as well! What is really surprising is the fact that the pictures that were on my phone are still there. I don't understand, I obviously did something wrong. Also no longer having USB connection issues so that is a big relief as well!
Of course all the applications I had installed are no longer present, but why are my pictures still intact after using a Rooted Restore.
I want to completely wipe my phone and then create a backup with Titanium Backup and call it Stock_Version#. Then after I root the phone and get everything setup the way I like it I want to create another backup called something else. Is this the correct way to go about doing this?
Because none of your storage gets wiped by factory resets. Resets only affect the rom portion of your phone not storage. Glad you got it working
By the way rooted restore already wiped everything on your phone and rooted it so you're good to go

Really? Okay, so I shouldn't see any empty folders for apps I no longer use?
I swear everytime I start looking at the folders in my phone I see things I don't recognize and it just bothers me. This is one reason I wanted to reset my phone and start over fresh.
Also is there a good tutorial for using Titanium Backup?
Any folders made on the SD card and internal storage will remain since factory resets won't touch the data, even if the app is gone

So when you install an app just to test it out then you un-install it remnants of that app are still left behind. This I have to say I don't like. There has to be a better way to keep the file structure free from accumulating garbage. Is there a better way or not?

You could always delete the /data contents for the APK but not if it's in android.secure.... you won't know what is what in there.
@garwynn - What is the difference between SPH-D710_FI27_CL1127689_Rooted_Restore.exe, and SPH-D710_FI27_CL1127689_Rooted_Restore_v2.exe?
Also I want to completely reset my phone now that I have everything backed up to my PC that I care about. So do I need to do a factory reset on the phone and then flash one of the files above?
The plan is to get a fresh start and use Titanium Backup like I should have been doing from the start!

No, you do not need to factory reset when you use an Odin one click.

Lol. So your google account settings remained? You didn't have to setup anything?? If that's the case, either it was the no data version or it didn't flash.
And if you're taking about formatting the usb storage, like blues said in the other thread you asked, it doesn't format it.
But feel free to get other opinions.
:edit: And the only way I'd ever suggest to "factory reset" from the privacy menu, would be to use a gb build. But don't take my word for it, read the brick bug thread.

I'm just getting confused here I think your right. So basically if I do a factory reset via the settings menu, that will reset everything but keep the same model FI27. Then all I'll need to do is reflash the SPH-D710_FI27_CL1127689_Rooted_Restore.exe, right?

See my edit above. I'll never suggest using that option with an ics build at this time.
Now, having said that, i have done it but with the brick bug, that choice is yours.
What i try to do is just format the drives (both internal and external) when connected to my laptop then power off, then use a one click.
Safe method - use a gb one click, factory reset via privacy option in settings and format usb, then use the fi27 one click.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
Okay tell me I understand this correctly.
Format both internal/external drives via settings > privacy > Factory data reset (this does not touch the SD Card, right?) while USB cable connected.
Power off phone and boot into download mode, then flash a "Stock Gingerbread Rom" (matching the model #, will it still be FI27 or not?) then at this point if I'm still on FI27 all I'll need to do is reflash "SPH-D710_FI27_CL1127689_Rooted_Restore" to regain root.
If after doing a factory reset and flashing a stock gingerbread rom I may have to wait for updates to be pushed to my phone, or not?

i don't have the rom installed right now, sorry that my instructions will be a little vague and won't tell you exactly where to go.
you need to find where the power menu options are. I find it in settings ==> rom control ==> power menu. you should be able to enable getting a screenshot through the power menu there. after that, hold down the power button and select screenshot.
hopefully pacman has that setting in the same place...

Pacman Rom-Blame Tyler errors
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I cant post in the rom thread and none of my searches have been helpful.
I'm coming from 4.2.2 and I've tried flashing several nightlies of the 4.3 update, however I keep getting errors immediately after flashing. The homes creen has not even fully updated when immediately it tells me "insufficient storage", so it wont update any of my apps. On top of that, I get another message that reappears immediately after hitting "ok". It's something like "We're sorry, acore has stopped. Blame Tyler."
I vaguely remember having a similar error when I tried to flash 4.2 and I read that updating the drivers was necessary. So that's what I did, and it worked for 4.2.
Now that I'm having this issue again for 4.3, I'm trying to find out if this is the way to fix it...? I'm a little panicked. This last time I got the error, I tried to wipe cache, dalvik, and restore, but even the restore is not working. And prior to that I might add, none of my latest restore files worked. For example, the last time I flashed successfully was 7/28/13, so I did a back up. Since then, I've backed up several times, tried to flash with no luck, restored with the latest backup file with no luck either. The only backup that will work is the same 7/28/13 file. Ever since then, I have not been able to flash anything successfully, nor restore to any of my latest backup files. Prior to 7/28, I had no issues flashing roms. Now, not even the 7/28 backup will work.
Please help. Not sure where to go from here.
