A month ago Marni Walden, chief market officer of Verizon Wireless, said "We've communicated to Microsoft that LTE is critical to us"
Now, a month later, all of the LTE Windows Phones are going to AT&T.
Maybe AT&T has exclusivity? Just a thought.

I'm glad I'm with AT&T, but I agree that Verizon was full of BS on this one. It seems AT&T is going all out on WP. Possibly because of losing iPhone exclusivity, but who knows. If Microsoft wants to gather market share WP7 handsets must be available on all networks. Both high and low end phones.

I have a hard time believing that AT&T managed to gain exclusivity on all three LTE Windows Phones.
This include the yet to be announce LTE Samsung Mendel.
AT&T is and has been the launch partner of WP7, but also remember these guys passed on the original iPhone as well.

If Verizon had a modern Windows Phone I probably would have bought it regardless of LTE.

1. KIN is a dumb phone. It failed because Verizon mandated a data plan.
2. Windows Phone with LTE was already available internally at that time. Verizon has known that LTE Windows Phone will appear at CES a month later.

...this is how it was supposed to work at the begining. However as we are all aware, this strategy failed because the maker were more interested to sell their Android devices, the carrier were not so keen to go along with WP7 and Microsoft had no specific "Windows Phone" to advertise for. Now with Nokia entering the WP7 market, this might change the game. Nokia started a PR-blitz which the carrier can't ignore any longer and the makers like Samsung, HTC and others will be obliged to start pushing their WP7 devices if they don't want to lose this part of their business...

Well yes and no... if you remove "wp7" "android" and whatever operating systmes mentioned, yes...
Because the carriers and hardware makers don't care whose OS is on the device, so long as:
A) the device sells (hardware makers)
B) there is a new contract signed to receive said device (carriers)
Neither of those (hardware or carriers) with exception of the now heavily committed Nokia care what os is selling, so long as -something- sells.
HTC, samsung, nokia, pantech, motorola can all very easily swap to symbian, webos, wp, wm, android, ios, or whomever should the market begin to sway (sales) in one OS's favor.
Its even easier for the carriers, as their only vested interest is the contract, which does not depend on an os whatsoever.
So, we're back to creating interest for a product where there is currently little to none, amoung very concrete competition.
Its a PR/AD persons wet dream, IF they succeed.

I don't see why they wouldn't get a phone from someone for the release. They still were the only ones to get the HD2 and such in the US.
its been rumored they're getting the dell lightning.
and the htc mozart
I'd say the odds are >95%. We've seent he mozart/shubert leaks with the release date on the leaked roadmap. WP7 sure seems like it's headed for all 4 carriers. AT&T claiming to be the premier carrier just seems like a lame cry because they are losing iPhone exclusivity.
At this point seeing the launch hardware I say T-Mo (US at least) and other US carriers wont get more than 1 device and that will be in the back of the store while they steer people to their android handsets.
So far zero WP7 phones have been noticed going through the FCC with tmo's bands. All of the phones that have been actually photographed are ATT phones.
So right now it's looking bad.

i don't think they are coming at all this year. maybe next year perhaps? i do know sprint & verizon are hell bent on android right now. plus verizon is strongly rumored to get the iphone in january, i don't think they will give two ****s about wp7. the only windows phone t-mobile currently carries is the hd2 and with the g2 just announced, well you see what direction they are heading. winmo was never a huge seller for these carriers in the first place. mostly business & corporate gurus used them.
As long as the Dell Lightning is released as rumoured in an AWS compatible version I will be happy, I prefer to buy unlocked anyway, carrier lockin doesnt work for me.

actually yes i do, i personally know several corporate gurus with sprint & verizon. they have no plans on a wp7 device this year. i heard the only carrier so far is at&t and i think their getting it because they are loosing the iphone exclusivity to verison early next year. you don't believe me, do some google searching. the customer base right now wants android & iphone, not winmo.
the so called "we want wp7" petitions they have right now are very, very small in fan base. palm & blackberry will fall off the radar soon too if these companies do not step up to the plate. i work on phones & 95% of those phones i service or unlock are droids. two years ago winmo had a larger fan base, most devs have moved to android.

What you're saying is correct for right now, but what you don't seem to understand is the fact that WP7 is not even out on the market yet. It's not a finished product, whereas, Android and IOS are already out on the market
and they have an established consumer base. Obviously, the Cellphone giants are going to invest their money into the proven product (just like you keep saying over and over again...) but that DOESN'T mean that WP7 is a "terrible" product, it only means that it hasn't been given a chance to prove its worth. Give WP7 6-12 months, and you'll see that your assumptions about the product were ignorant and premature. As far as AT&T goes, the loss of Iphone exclusive rights might have something to do with their huge investment in WP7. However, it also has to do with the fact that they are giving Microsoft a chance because they know that there is a consumer base for their product, and that they have the potential to take over a great amount of the market. Pessimists like yourself just want to stick to what they feel safe with and won't acknowledge that there may be better devices out there other than a non-customizable glitter phone for conformed snobs who think whatever is in demand is what they should buy, and a search engine phone, whose company thinks it's high-tech just because it calls it's phone's UI Android but still can't get rid of it's touchscreen lagging after 2 years on the market... Get a grip mate and stop writing ridiculous comments about a product that you have "researched" through some fanboy blog that you found through google, and that you're not qualified enough to own at this point, much less give advice about...

There's absolutely no reason why there wont be unlocked versions sold, only in the US is locking people into carriers popular AND so easy, in Europe you walk into a store and buy the phone you want, unlocked and insert your SIM card. Same will be true for WP7 phones.
I don't see why Sprint/Verizon don't get one when they are labeled as Launch Partners with Microsoft. Unless they pulled out for some stupid reason, why in the hell would they not get the phone since they have little to do on their end to support it? HTC makes the phones, Microsoft standardized setup, and people that do not want Android/iPhone/BB/crap phone, will buy it. Sure its an investment but you really think Sprint will not get a 4G version and push it? Sprint does have some good Android stuff, but they do not have the "Droid" market like Verizon and I believe it would be wise to get some 4G WP7 devices and really market around them. It would be stupid not to.
So we already have a thread on T-Mo. Anyone have any in's on the true story of Sprint phones? will we have anything on release day?
My contract expired back in may and I've been biding my time waiting to see WP7...really want to make sure it will be worth my wait, and that Sprint doesn't delay and has quality phones.
Highly doubt you will see any CDMA phones this year.
Just check FCC

Not to come accross as rude, but is this based on anything, or just guess work on your part?
We didn't know about some of the phones that are filling up the web today (based on FCC Info that was just released) a week ago, seems that the lack of information doesn't prove anything one way or another. If you your reply is more than a guess (and again, not trying to sound rude at all...i just want a Win Phone 7 toy as bad as everyone else), than I'd love to know the source of info, or even the fact that you can't give away the source.
There was the rumored "HTC Gold W" for Sprint...anything coming from that?
There's no reason to think that Sprint won't be carrying a WP7 device at launch, unlike Verizon.
From the things I've read GSM devices will get the 1st crack, and CDMA will come next year. It could just be the rumor-mill though.
I don't mind waiting though. I think I'll wait for Gen 2 or 3 devices. I'm hoping MS gets more chipset drivers coded, I'd like to see SnapDragon vs. Hummingbird vs. Tegra 2.
I wouldn't mind waiting if I wasn't in desperate need of a phone. In 4 months time, I'm on my second Vogue, and it now has a broken USB jack...seems to only charge when plugged into a pc usb port. This would be fine if i didn't have to rely on it for on-call pages overnight.
A lot of recent articles on the HTC Spark, and most claim it's supposed to have CDMA included, so we'll see.
Wanna bet?
No CDMA phones this year. To be honest I really don't know, but if T-MO gets a device first then Sprint won't get it until next year. Its been this way for some reason.

I think it's mostly just people talking out of their rear end. The Verizon rumors seem to have teeth but that shouldn't affect Sprint. It's not like a GSM phone will work on all the carriers worldwide anyways. They're pretty much always customized/modified and it really shouldn't be all that different for the OEMs to toss the CDMA radio chip in instead of the GSM chip.

What do events from many, many years ago and different OSes have to do with this? T-Mo got Android before anyone else, worldwide. At this point, there's just as much likelihood for Sprint to get a WP7 device on launch day as T-Mo. Leading the pack seems to be AT&T but there's no reason the others won't as well.
You're just looking at past events and assuming there's a connection to current events. Look at the reasons behind those events and you'll see that they simply don't apply here.
All I know is that a WP7 phone on the Sprint network would be perfect since the advanced hardware can really take advantage of the 4G network
I really believe Sprint would not be stupid enough to not get a WP7 device the minute launch day comes for the US. I do believe GSM gets the first crack since Europe is getting WP7 a month before the US, but after that we already have leaks of HTC based _W phones (World Phones like the Touch Pro 2 for those that do not know) and I would really think Sprint wants to pad their 4G with a 4G WP7 device as soon as they can. A device that can really use the whole offering 4G has to offer. (With streaming Netflix, Intigrated Zune, and XBLive, as long as they do not gimp the phones like ATT does with the iPhone).
Why AT&T continues to get countless new phones is beyond me. They can't handle the iPhone data useage alone let alone all the Android + iPhone + future WP7 Traffic they are going to get.
Engadget said:

I refuse to believe that comment about Europe getting WP7 first statement. It wasn't really made in an official statement but sorta off the cuff by a senior exec who likely isn't intimately familiar with the launch. It would go against Microsoft's entire history, both recent and further back, of USA first. At most, Europe will get it at the same time which would be a big deal for Microsoft since they normally forget about the rest of the world.
At least I hope I'm right lol. The only reason I can think of is some sort of regulatory or carrier issues that would cause them to delay it here.

Not sure what you're really referring to exactly but how would that apply to a new OS made by an American company?
MS has teams all around the world.

Where have all the leaks been coming from? Sure wasn't the US.

Yea, our networks are behind (and that's not really 100%, we have broader 4G deployment). But we're not behind on software. iPhone was launched here first as was Android. There's no reason that WP7 isn't launched here if not ahead of the rest, at least at the same time. MSFT doesn't even have the Zune store available abroad yet.
Iphone team is here in the US, so are all the iphone leaks.
The Android team is here in the US, Android was a company here in the US before being purchased by Google .
MS teams are all around the world. That's why if you ask a WP7 spoke person about specific parts of the OS, they don't have a clue. Or specific release dates, they don't have a clue.
We're at a point now to where we would have seen a CDMA leak, especially for Sprint.

Ummmm MS is 99% in the US. Next largest is a team in India but they mostly did the emulator if I'm not mistaken. If you don't get an answer from a spokesperson it's because they're not allowed to talk about it or they're not a developer or even a technical person so they really don't have any clue about it in general. They very well might not know the release dates because Microsoft doesn't want anything leaked. It's a "need to know" situation. The people that do know sure as hell aren't just going to run around telling people because they don't want to lose their job. Nothing you've said has anything to do with a CDMA device coming/not coming to Sprint at launch. It doesn't even qualify as circumstantial evidence.
According to the story in today's NY Times, having lost iPhone exclusivity, AT&T has announced it will be aggressively marketing its Android lineup. Not a word of WP7 from AT&T. I remain dumbstruck that Microsoft made AT&T their "premier launch partner," they couldn't care less about WP7 phones.
here's the link
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/28/technology/28phone.html?partner=rss&emc=rss
it's nothing personal against WP7, they're just going with where they think the money is.
Give it some time, this OS is not going to succeed for probably a few years.
Maybe I do take it too personally I love the OS, I love the Focus, and it seems to me if a company partners up with another company to sell its products, they should do something to sell the products. I was in a AT&T store recently with my college age son to get an iPhone (he has no interest in anything Windows), and just for kicks I asked the head sales engineer about the WP7 phones. He basically told me that they would have to be the last phones in the store for him to sell them. That's quite a partner.

And now they suddenly want to be behind android, but Verizon has that crown with their droid campaigns so now they are considered to have the best network AND the best phones. at&t is known as the former exclusive iphone carrier and for (alleged) poor wireless service, not as a great carrier for android phones and it will take time for them to make it as profitable for them as the iphone was. So putting all their eggs in the android basket doesnt seem smart. Nothing says they cant be strong supporters of both android and WP7, which benefits them now and not wait around till Verizon decides (if they ever do) to get behind WP7 in a big way and then at&t is once again just a one-OS carrier.

just one douche in one store. In the AT&T near me the reps think the phone is great, a few have them and they have told me specifically that they think it is better than android...
I went from Winmo 6.1 to 6.5 and just spent the past ten months on an Android device, albeit a POS SE X10, but still Android.
I am thrilled to be back with WP7.
I think this OS will take off also. It will take time but I'm confident a substantial user base will materialize.
It would behoove MS to release updates on schedule.
I'm sure AT&T has a WP7 strategy also, but just wasn't mentioned in the article.
I hope it's an aggressive one.
For now, their main rival doesn't have any WP7 phones. So now is the best time to hype it up.
Whatever happened to being the "premiere" WP7 carrier?

I thought the reason was that WP7 and Microsoft will be AT&T's safe haven after iPhone users would depart to Verizon. What happened?

partners don't stay partners for long if there isn't money to be made, and tons of it. att was looking past the iphone exclusivity, and hoping wp7 was going to explode just like iphone did. if it does not, att will push whatever (android, blackberry, a box of crap that is perfumed like honey) it can to get people to sign a contract.
also, i wonder why people are supposed to suddenly drop att (and pay etfees) to go get on contract at another carrier ?
****
side note, i went shopping @ att's online chat service for a new phone, and service. the rep wouldn't even get into android, iphone, or wp7 MODELS without pushing for a contract first and foremost. they don't give a DAMN what phone you buy, so long as they can bill you (on contract) for $120 a month per line.
^ sounds about right. Contract first, then they will talk to you about any phone.
While Verizon has the HTC Trophy as it's one and only Windows Phone, the wireless provider has given Microsoft an ultimatum of sorts that could see the Verizon dropping Windows Phone all together.
In a recent interview with CNET Verizon Wireless's Chief Marketing Officer Marni Walden commented,
"We've communicated to Microsoft that LTE is critical to us. We need to see a timeline that makes sense if we want to continue to represent them."
Microsoft hasn't responded to Walden's comments but has said it would add LTE support to Windows Phone but hasn't addressed the "when" of the subject. Should Microsoft and Verizon part ways, the wireless company will focus it's smartphone line-up on Android devices and the iPhone (which doesn't support LTE).
Verizon is still working with Microsoft on this issue and hopefully common ground can be found to bring the second generation Windows Phones to Verizon. If not, does the success of Windows Phones hinge on a Verizon model or will Microsoft do just fine without?

I'd think it's more of a planning prep on V's part. They can't exactly start an ad campaign that states "the most LTE devices" or anything like that if apple and microsoft haven't caught up yet. V is pushing it's LTE big time, and LTE should be pushed. It's not necessary to sell a phone, but every time a standard is adopted and speeds are increased, we all benefit.
Microsoft doesn't really benefit by LTE directly in phone sales. It's just another radio to them, much like Apple. On the other hand, they're in the business of getting more mindshare, and selling more licenses. With those licenses come more vender tie-ins, and that means BIG MONEY.
whatchathink ?
Lol even though they would never draw that line for apple and iPhone...
...not to mention as soon as LTE is finished, there will be 5G or Super-Duper LTE or some new thing...

Re-reading the quote from Walden, it is a bit ambiguous. Verizon wants to see a roadmap/timeline from Microsoft about LTE support, but they don't mention Apple at all. That could imply that Apple has provided such a roadmap to the carrier, while not releasing it to the public (a somewhat reasonable conclusion, I suppose), or that Versizon believes that Apple represents a large enough revenue stream to overlook the lack of LTE (which WP doesn't quite represent yet).
The question is, why wouldn't Microsoft want to communicate their plans to the carrier, at least to confirm that LTE is coming?
LTE support will require re-speccing CDMA devices for Verizon's network. The SoCs that Microsoft uses in WP7 do not support LTE. They will likely not have LTE support until they have Dual Core CPU [official] support in the OS/Devices.
The next iPhone is almost guaranteed to be LTE, and Apple isn't comparable to Microsoft, because Apple has greater Mindshare and sells way more phones than WP7. The 4S set records on almost every carrier who got it, and sold 4M units in a weekend on Pre-Order. No other phone performs that well.
Trying to call Apple out would not help Verizon, especially with AT&T starting to roll out their LTE network now. By the time the iPhone 5 launches, AT&T can have LTE in enough places that iPhone users wanting an upgrade (and leaving for AT&T) can significantly affect their bottom line. It would be a dumb move.
WP7 is the platform with something to prove, not Apple. iOS matches or exceeds WP7 in every area. Microsoft needs a competitive Advantage, and not getting to LTE before Apple does on Verizon (or even WiMax on Sprint) is not a good strategy, IMO.
calling out only one single os is an equally dumb move imo...
wouldn't want to upset the isheep though
Lte is barely available anywhere anyway.

Doesn't the HTC Thunderbolt use the same SoC used in today's Windows Phones?

Lol even though they would never draw that line for apple and iPhone...

Verizon (and everyone else) isn't in the position to dictate anything to Apple. Apple dictates to them. Just look at the Sprint deal.

You're that clueless about Verizon LTE coverage and the speed at which they're rolling it out?
Apple phone launch = camp outs at the store. WP device launch =?
Verizon is in the business of making money. They will push what sells and make them the most money. Additionally Apple users are more willing to upgrade a phone year over year than WinPhone users. It has nothing to do with iSheep or WinTards.
See what I did there?
As for the Thunderbolt that needs confirmation. (You're right)
It has the Qualcomm MSM8655 Snapdragon. Is that the same one in the new Mango phones. The radio would be totally different, though, so I'm unsure of the technical details beyond that. I think the Thunderbolt is renowned for terrible battery life, though the Photon 4G and Bionic seem to have better battery life on 4G/LTE.

Dual Core, 4G, LTE all this will do is drain the $h!t out of your battery life. I can't wait to see the iFans faces drop when their battery goes down hill because of LTE.

considering I dont live in the states I can only go with what i read/hear..
So what iPhone sales are higher?
A phone company should know better than to show that blatant of favoritism..
What if wp7 gets huge? It will take a bit but it could happen.
I'm sure they wouldn't forget that
Not many people follow what Verizon says...after all, they're the same guys that rejected the iPhone then kissed Apple's ass to get it.
They're the largest wireless carrier in the USA.
Over 100M people follow what they say.
If WP7 gets huge then they can use their user base to dictate the terms of deals, as Apple has done beautifully.
Sprint isn't exactly the richest carrier, but look how much they were willing to invest just to get the iPhone 4/4S.
Glad to see you're back to your usual masking opinions as facts self, but truth be told, Verizon was last to release a WP7 phone...and they only have one...they are hardly in a position to make demands...they can decide to sell Android and iPhone...Microsoft will still get paid.

...don't really know what that has to do with what I posted, but it's true...Microsoft knows "LTE" "4G" and all that is just marketing...everyone using a WP7 phones knows it doesn't need dual core, 4G, or none of that stuff.

Its all just marketing? What makes you say that? It kind of sounds like you've fallen for some "you dont really need this thing we don't support" marketing. WP7 needs features and hardware that can compete with iOS and Android. That's it.
Says you, I've been using this HD7 since December 2010....still works fine and with no lag...only spec sheep care about that...the iPhone 4s sold more than all the others WITHOUT LTE or 4G.
That's exactly my point. The iPhone can afford it. Windows phone can't. That's what happens when you're three years later to market and gave apple a 3 year lead in building out their ecosystem.

The iPhone didn't start off on fire, it gained a following...case in point: I had Sprint and a TP2, have a friend w/T-Mo and got an HD2 on their 2nd line. I then got my HD7 and they left T-Mo and got an Evo 3-D...they just left Sprint and got a Radar because of my HD7...word of mouth is way better than specs.
Verizon's Keith Lampron, Associate Director of device marketing, said at CES that Verizon will have almost every single device on its network carrying LTE connectivity from now on, save for the push-to-talk gear.
This "hard requirement" has been the main reason to snub Windows Phones devices until now, he said, whereas in fact Verizon is welcoming a third viable competitor in the mobile OS wars.
With the advent of the Nokia Lumia 900 on AT&T and the HTC Titan 2, both the first LTE Windows Phones, Verizon will be more likely to carry handsets with Microsoft's mobile OS.
In fact, as Nokia pointed out yesterday, Verizon is considered a very important partner, and the Finns are planning to supply it with a unique Windows Phone proposition of its own, that will make the carrier differentiate itself from the rest of the WP offerings. Mum's the word yet what this handset might look like, or when are we to eventually expect it.

Same as Sprint, you may not see any new phones until the next major version of WinPhone. Around August.

I really do hope not. AT&T, Microsoft, Nokia, and HTC are all finally working together on this project. The main reason Windows Phones don't sell well is the lack of promotion on the carrier's part. If AT&T really push windows phone at their stores and a similar phone shows up at verizon's doorstep, AT&T might not push it as much as they should.
Bunch of crap. Verizon has no problem selling the iphone which doesn't have LTE.

exactly...
And Sprint only has Wimax which they are basically going to be replacing with LTE (which they haven't rolled out yet).
Sprint is blaming the lack of enthusiasm on the poor sales of the 1 WP7 device they have, the Arrive.

iPhone sells tens of millions of units, it doesn't have to play by the same rules as everyone else.

Yeah, but corporate verizon tries everything to sell you a LTE phone instead. From the double data promo to really expensive droid commercials. The representative at the store might only push iphones but that's because he probably doesn't know much about android and windows phones.
They're the largest carrier so they need to carry the icrap for idiots that have no knowledge of technology.

Attention please. Thank you. Will everyone who is an idiot please stand up, and display your phone of choice so I can count them ? No one ? None of you are idiots ?
Let's try a new approach. Would everyone that believes they bought the best possible mobile device please stand up ? Oh my. Everyone. And would you please display... ok, you're a quick study.
My job here is done.

This post embodies EVERYTHING that is wrong with this forum. Thank you for providing such an excellent example for others to (hopefully) not follow.
These CDMA carriers are out of their minds and are all getting in bed with either android or apple. At least T-mobile is now heavily promoting the lumia. Literally seeing it in every commercial break on telemundo.
^ that's not T-Mobile promoting.
