This is a very very interesting read, well written too! What impressed me more is the fact that they have acknowledged that starting and OS from the start is what Windows Phone 7 is. Unlike others who bash the OS saying 'yeah but they had windows mobile since 10-12 years'!
They've acknowledged the fact that yes the money and customers they made pre-iPhone for 7 years or so were awesome! They decided to fight back iPhone just within a year, but thought windows mobile wasn't good enough with what they were facing. Thus, a drastic re-write of the whole freaking OS! This to me is an inspirational and bold move from a business that thought, we can afford to risk our time and money and let Google come along, give something as ordinary as iPhone but when we go out there, we will produce something extra ordinary. This is exactly what they made money from when they made windows mobile! - something extra ordinary for that era. I think with new design, new idea, new way to present info - they have actually proved a point saying "A decade of experience is much more than one Steve Jobs, but we have to prove it and here is how we do it!".
Thanks for the share!

Critics love it but consumers have no idea what it is.

And THAT is the problem!
I spent the morning with a client of mine. We were doing work on her laptop. She's got the Motorola Droid. It's laggy and freezes up ALL of the time. She has absolutely no idea how to use the device or what can be done with it. A few months ago, I showed her the Business Calendar app, but she just doesn't need what Android has to offer.
I've been showing her my HD2 with the BTTF WP7 ROM on it. I explained how the OS gently takes your hand and shows you what it can do, whereas Android is akin to sink-or-swim. You either are curious enough to learn how it works, or you're stuck device that you have no idea how to use.
When Verizon launches a few more Windows Phones, I'm going to help her get one.
Since MSFT doesn't do that good of a job getting the OS's name out there, I do my part.

The linked article isn't a review, or a news "report", but only a click-grabbing headline that makes short gushes of both Joe Belfiore and the history of WP7.
No quote, no reviews, no content, just the NYT playing off of CES for clicks/views

I love WP7 but isn't iOS 5 The Ultimate OS?

Looks like Apple is taking what people love about every other OS and mashing up into one. That's just brilliant!
Sure they're copying plenty of stuff but the end users won't care as long as their phones do everything they want. Any thoughts?
I dislike the title of this thread. Espeically in a WP7 forum. If they are "copying" then it just shows how good the people are they are copying it from. iOS needed to keep up with the latest standards and its good to have competition.

+1 for this... .
If you are a fanboy then there is a forum in XDA for you ..Not here please ...go to the iPhone forum
Wow, are we not adults here? Can't we talk about what's good about an other OS? Really, wow...
that's just it save from notifications and text only browser, a lot of things are offered in wp7 mango natively...so what's the point? I mean the main problem I have is that apple is still app centric. Yes its finally doing a lot with regards to integration, but is it enough? I'm not sure
I don't mind having a discussion on this I bought my sister an ipad so the ios info is good for me to know...
In many ways it seems that apple has finally caught up to microsoft and google in terms of OS integration and consumer demand...only took 4 years
imho the notes system looks cluttered and gimmicky
lol
I saw the title of this and came by, really from my reading on this apple didn't show me anything that wp7 doesn't support natively or will. Its good they updated their approach keeps people on their toes but your title is wow.

You title says : "isn't iOS 5 The Ultimate OS? "
What is the ultimate m8??? The trend and the fashion ..not technology and inovation !!!
New new future presented today by Apple
1. The present today a camera button as a big news... OMG
2. The presen icloud as something new ...Guys skydrive or dropbox are on the market for some time now
3. The present today the notification system ...Woowww this is realy a breakthrough.
This is Apple guys...
Dont forget last year the told us for the fisrt time that there is something called copy paste and multitasking....
They are good ...but only on marketing and on creating trend and fashion...
I gotcha P
I have owned every major phone OS (Smartphone) in US, and WP7 just works for me I have had android and IOS both are great at what they do give me apps that do what I need at that time. Now to touch base with a couple of things we are all wrong in the respect of what is better for this guy is better for that. Everything is based on perception on how it feels to the consumer, and most comparisons on phone stuff is based on what someone shows us at a given time. I pleaded my case with Windows Mobile time and time again when I was with ATT and then the new Phone OS came out with features I already had, the biggest is (tethering) but people tend to go with whats cool and who is using what. Apples biggest advantage by far is accessories I buy one and it works on all my iphones, ipods, etc that is the only advantage I see apple having right now. (I hope this is still on topic I jabber alot)
Alright, can a mod just close the thread please, I can see where this is going...

Actually, Copy Paste is there sincer iOS 3. 2 years from now. But I think they copied exactly Android. In a beautiful way, of course.
Still, I prefer Mango than iOS 5 (;
We just need some apps. And Mango, of course.

I see what your saying about the iOS so know that one person fully agrees with you.
I don't see a problem with them copying anything? Really, what they are copying is exactly what they needed to make a well rounded OS. It would be very foolish of them to just look at what they need and push it aside. I say, iOS 5 is gonna be insane.
I would also like to add that I kinda predicted their new notification system in another thread on here. And yes, I do want a cookie
There's a lot of stuff WP7 Mango does that ios doesnt do- Threads that integrate your SMS, IM's, Facebook chat, People hub where you can see your history with a person including calls, texts, pictures, bing extras, local scout, native Office, Xbox live (8 new games here http://www.winrumors.com/8-new-xbox-live-enabled-windows-phone-7-games-revealed-at-e3/), IE9 with hardware acceleration - looking at ios5 I cant think of anything that it now has that really trumps Mango.
apple added features from other OS's but even then WP7's integration is second to none and still comes out on top for me.
I don't see much difference in terms of features between iOS5 and Mango (there are areas where each one is better than the other), but that's certainly bad for Mango. It's not enough to have feature parity with the leader to beat it, especially when media calls iOS5 "massive" and Mango "underwhelming".
I understand the sentiment and agree but dont think the title gave the thread much chance..
If its the ultimate there is no reason for anyone to buy any other device.
One thing is good though - it'll be much easier for Microsoft to explain what Windows Live is. Their Marketing and PR people should commit harakiri, I think. One cannot live with such shame.
Off topic: Windows Mobile had copy and paste and Multi-tasking since forever. So I don't know what all the praise for iPhone is/was all about. I also believe what Microsoft really needs to work on is their Marketing department. I think that's just where Apple beats them.

iOS5 looks like a cracking upgrade for people who already own iOS devices, or are heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem. It's fan service, rather than something that will bring in new customers by the droves.
I've got to say though, it does tempt me back towards an iPhone. If they had a Zune Pass style music subscription service I might have made the jump with the iPhone 5, though there's a few other features I'd like to see. WebOS-style linking between phone and tablet for a start.
Mango looks like a stronger update, but starting from a weaker position. Microsoft also seem to lack a real platform currently. They've got lots of small projects going on, but it's a bit disjointed. My Windows Phone, Windows PC and Xbox 360 don't really play nice together and I'm yet to see a Windows Tablet that I want to buy. Windows 8 needs to hurry up...

First mango, then tango, banjo next?

I think it would fun if m$ ran with that line for a little while. What do you think?

Sell it back? Free updates are for sell? I think someone is ripping you off. Windows phone is a brand new OS, if they design it with every feature that was in windows mobile and all the new and smooth ui interface, we would still be waiting. Just think about the poor chumps who took up iPhones and android phone at release... iOS users waited 3 year for multitasking, android users don't get updates unless they do it themselves. Window phones users have the best of both worlds, freedom of hardware and updates straight from Microsoft (with some testing by the manufacturer and carrier). Love your phone and support its development, and maybe your ideas will become a part of it.

Eh...I was an early adopter of the first iPhone and loved it. It was the best phone I ever owned. I didn't miss any of the things it now has. Mainly because I never had them prior to my iPhone. But I did miss them in WP7 when it was released because I already had all of those features on the previous Windows phone, the HD2 with WinMo.
I'm just glad the car companies don't have to reinvent the wheel, A/C, power steering or and of the modern conveniences we all are accustomed to when they make a new car. I'm also glad the TV makers don't have to reinvent the remote control or any of its other conveniences when they make a new kind of TV.
It seems MS is the only company who feels the need to reinvent common features when they make a new phone OS.

You seem to miss the fact that WP7 was rushed out the door. They only worked on it about 1 yr before releasing it after scrapping the WM7 project. This is why so much was/is missing. Considering it usually takes 3-4 yrs to develop an OS, I am pleasantly surprised what they did in only a yr.

Oh no, I do know MS released WP7 too early. But even then I still believe it's better than iOS. Don't get me wrong, I love WP7. But it was featureless and some people seem to suggest that common features have to be reinvented with each new system. In the case of Bing navigation, it was a beloved feature of WinMo 6.5 and I felt it was the best free nav ever created. All it needed was recoding for WP7. It didn't have to be reinvented from the ground up. And then release it for WP7 as quickly as possible.

Ah, miss understood what you were saying. Also, it's not just a simple re-coding for WP7. WP7 uses mostly DLL's for it's apps. There are very few EXE's, everything else runs through taskhost.exe. Granted it is a MS product, so there's always the argument they could make it run as an EXE.
I've been doing this windows thing since 2003,if you're not sideloading apps you'll basically end up paying for something you once had for free

Simple answer, they don't know any better. Getting advice from sales people who don't know what they're talking about. Plus, there's quite a few who don't even know about WP7.
its due to Android and iOS having their fanbase already established, the bad rep "windows mobile" left which leaves the impression that wp7 is like wndows mobile 7 (they should have called it something more similar to xbox or zune imo) lacking features at launch and so on. personally, after installing Mango, im convinced that WP7 is mature enough to be my full time OS. just love the ui design, smoothness, and overall integration with all things microsoft and social networks

people in press always loved/love apple. they are the ones in most companies that use macs, while the rest of the companies departements are pc only. they obviously love their iphones, too (and it makes sence, if you know and work with apple products only).
they are the kind of people that still drool if someone makes a bluescreen joke, or a virus joke. they, btw, often still think bill gates is in charge of microsoft.
so it all makes sense. i continue to do my part for wp7. so far, quite some converts happened. and without all-to-active propaganda. just gave it into the hands of some people, answered the few questions they might have had, and let them decide.

Good News About wp7

lately while i have been going out i have been seeing more windows phones out in the wild. Although where i am at i see like 25 iphones a few droids but i never saw windows phones. Well now i am actually seeing windows phones out in the wild occasionly. 2012 looks like it could be a good year for windows phones. Who knows maybe 2012 will be the year of windows phones?
Sounds promising. Which phone do you have?
Yes I beleive once they drop Apollo the masses will come flocking unless iphone 5 is real promising, but people are going to start looking for a change and I beleive WP7 will be it for them. WP7 is already striking the interest of many but so many people see the features Android and iOS has to offer and they end up following the sheep. Seen it happen numerous times. Once we get a compeitive phone on the market then we can really compete.

At what point in sales numbers do people quit being people, and become sheep ?
Its more of people following the fad, for no good reason, at least the people ive ran into and asked myself, me personally I dont care. But it seems that people that arent techie seem to go where everybody else go without trying other things on the market. This girl at my job was absolutely tired of her Android because it ran like crap. Obviously her next choose was iOS, I told her to look at WP7 and I also gave her good reasons to get the WP7. Few days later she gets the iOS. My cousin who is an avid Nokia guy and always stood by them was looking to get a Nokia WP7 device. Few weeks later he gets the HTC Amaze, reasoning: the Amaze is the most powerful phone on the market. Even though I told my cousin WP7 doesnt need the same power to operate like it should he still choose the Android device. From my experience with several other people it seems like they are scared to step out of the realm and try something different. Therefore they follow the sheep without giving the WP7 a try. Im not mad at there decision because im not the one using their device.
I don't think WP7 will rise again. I don't really know what deal thought Nokia to do with Microsoft, but everything is far behind possible. Mango should have brought at least the same functionalities tan Android, but at this time, I don't have even wifi theetering on my LG, where the most of branded LG have. everything is missing in WP7, and I saw the new galaxy phone with Android 4 will be there soon. maybe in a couple of months I'll get my theetering, where the Android and iOS will get a new load of things

Well that's probably because the App selection on WP7 is even worse than on Android and basically no one owns it, a lot of people buy Android for the same reason they buy iPhones, they know the name, WP7 is new and no one likes change much. WP7 is VERY nice, but the features are boring, and yeah it brings a new UI but that's all that it does, I don't think it will be a big OS anytime soon, Android and iOS will be in the top for a long time.
Give this to the second page for it to descend into the usual "WP7 sucks" thread. Cant allow the spread of any positive WP7 news now, can we?

hold your horses there, how many phones will be running vanilla android= a few. Excuse me but every windows phone runs amazing and yes i read reviews for ics but android is still android and over time it will run like crap. I owned an android and used it now i am on windows phone and loving it. I dont think i can go back to android. IOS sells very well so i dont think you can say it "sucks" but the interface is still quite boring and i would never get an "i" device.
Just my 2 cents, If you compared iOS, Android & WP7 for their 1st year achivement, then you will see how fast the trend is that WP try to catch up to compete with Android & iOS.
Conclusion is,
take what you love, rather than bash it after you get it, whether it is an Android, an iDevice, or a WP.

Tango is a minor update, the equivalent of NoDo. It's not going to be adding anything major except potentially support for things like LTE and NFC. There were also early rumors of system wide search being added.
Mango has put WP7 at a decent place. It isn't up to par with iOS or Android but it is usable. It just needs attractive devices and a better catalog of apps. Hopefully Nokia's US devices will keep things moving until the major update later next year.
I was showing a female friend my HD7 the other day and i could not believe it when she said the interface was cluttered and ugly, this coming from some one who owns and iPhone 4. The iphone GUI was cutting edge when it came out but endless pages of applications that offer no information rather then the occasion number to indicate an event is rather outdated. Although Live tiles have not been implement as well i and most probably Microsoft would of hoped.
Her only problem with the WP7 interface was that is scrolls down, to be honest i would not be surprised if they change this in a future update to co inside with all the other metro UI offerings. I love my HD7 but i agree Microsoft has to really pick up the ball and significantly increase its list of features and specifications if they want to compete.

Wether ICS will "run like crap" (your speculation)with some time/usage or not does not matter. What matters is it will be yet another major update to the OS, enough to pull in more new customers and prompt people that like signing contracts to re-up.
Previously everyone speculated that Mango and its 500 features was going to slaughter all the other mobile os's. When that didn't happen, the rumor mill turned to "when we get some cool hardware" we will slaughter ios/bb/android.
I belive the post above mine mentiones a girl saying wp7 is "ugly".. while she prefers the 3 deminsional ios icons, and lots of them. I've heard other people call wp7 "flat" before, but this is the first mention on xda. The changes wp7 is going to have to have will include a visually stunning CHANGE from the current setup. New customers have seen it, for over a year now. If mango, new nokia phones, and another small update isn't the right lure, what is ?

Advertising. They have really got to create interest, create a desirable image, or tout features that the others do not have.......
You know, stuff like...
A group of business people outdoors on a jobsite going over something. There is a problem, and people in the group begin fumbling with obvious androids and iphones and computers trying to get the information. Zoom in on the pretty woman with the windows phone who opens excel, grabs the info, edits it, and then becomes the hero of the situation while showing the others the information. Someone will say, "what kind of phone is that", and then Cue the "Windows Phone 7" logo.
or
Two college students are walking toward a mall, they see three pretty girls. "We should call Shaun to meet up with us", one says. "Yeah right", says the other, "he's probably gaming on his xbox". "I'll text him and see if he can come", cue the image him texting in the background. In the foreground, close up on the windows phone 7, hit xbox live, and him messaging and getting a reply. Zoom back in on the texter who says, "he didn't reply". The Winphone7 user says, "he'll be here in 15 minutes". "How do you know that?" the first clueless student says..... Cue the Windows Phone 7 logo.
They have got to advertise. I am expecting a blitz when they launch the Nokia phones here in America. We will see

Sad but true. People are just not open to change. I showed my phone to several friends. The ones using Symbian were instantly amazed, but the ones who had used Android found it ugly. As if a sea of confusing icons is the only way a UI should look like. They say, "S**t, you can't theme it to something different?"
I can only feel sad for their lack of understanding. I owned a Nexus S, and i am just not going back to it.

To late for Windows Phone.....

I was doing some reading on the CES for 2013 and this article stated that Google will rule 2013 CES. So as im reading the writer states something about Apple never attends CES and that Windows phone is TO LATE.
What exactly does the statement, "Windows Phone is to late" ?
Ive seen this statement more than just this one time and wonder why people think its to late for Windows Phone. Am I missing something. Are they saying that Windows Phone doesnt stand a chance. Or are they saying there can only be Iphone and Android being your only choose for a smartphone? What about Blackberry, symbian, webos and others. Why do they seem to try to attack Windows Phone and say they dont stand a chance. I never once heard them state this about the new Blackberry OS. Are these people scared of Windows Phone potential on the competition?
Forgive me for rambling on, but im just curious about the topic and wonder why people are taking jabs at Windows Phone.
Windows has been in this game for a long time, a lot longer than Iphone and Android, and with the revamped system I feel they have much potential, but others feel they dont. Why is that?
i'm not sure what he meant....maybe he meant "too late"?

It's the typical closed-mindedness that accompanies anything new and late to the dance. That it carries the typically loathed Microsoft label, makes it even more of a target. WP7 has a lot of work to do, but there are those of us who like the product (faults and all) and who choose to support it to help it become successful, or until it fails.
Because Windows Phone IS Microsoft, and because of that, most people see Microsoft products as fail, but that was before with Zune Players and Vista.
And now that Microsoft is stepping up again with great products and services, and receiving positive reviews, haters obviously cant give pure positive comments about it, and because they pretty much cant admit that the OS is better than the one they're praising, instead they can only hope WP to fail - which is most unlikely to happen since most popular apps are already in WP Marketplace and OEMs are considering producing a WP.
Also, what kind of tech journalist would even use the words "too late" when really you can't be "too late" in the tech industry. I think Microsoft is already "waaaaay ahead" in tech industry with their Surface project.
--------------
Not to sound like an android hater but, admit it, Microsoft is better than Google now. And the article I read about Google using Metro style on their services is bsh*t. Magazine-style? REALLY? I'd say its a cheap knock-off of Metro UI. Just because Microsoft promoted Segoe family font as a clean typography font, that doesn't mean you have to make a font (Roboto) and promote it and say "oh look its so modern and clean and pleasing to the eye" when clearly it looks a lot like Helvetica font.
That is all.
I think Microsoft is ahead, with stability and build quality being stunning on nearly every device. Sure dual core and such isn't out yet but with Android dual core is needed just to run smoothly. Take it from an ex Android Fanboy, Windows Phone 7 is not late, it's just on time.
I suspect it goes beyond that guys. I believe the too late sentiment is based on where Microsoft was before (Windows Mobile) and where Microsoft is now (Windows Phone).
Somewhere between Windows Mobile 6.5 and now we saw the emergence of iOS and Android. They have plenty to show for their efforts while Microsoft has very little. If they did something about it back then people would not say they are too late. No one really says that about Symbian.
Also, ultimately it is a prediction of demise.
I know this sounds like blind fanboyism, and maybe it is, but I honestly think if Microsoft did not go to sleep like they did they would not have come out with such a refreshing interface. It is hard to sound objective and say it was for the best because of course it was not, but with the way the landscape is going, I like where Microsoft is at (unification of platforms).
The two most picked on companies, Microsoft and T-mobile. Others can do no wrong.
Okay what i´ll say is that WP has the Prob that it is new, also a reaseon is that there is this IPhone Hype bute i think that this´ll stop the next few years, also what i think is,if i´m looking to androidbrothers there is the disadvantage that they´ve low specs compared with for eg. the Galaxy S2,eventhough i think that the Titan2,FocusS and Lumina are the right way but not right enough because they´ve no Dualcore CPU´s which is reason for which i think the most customers who want Highspec Devices choose an Android Device, also they´ve no really big new Features like 3D or so,and it seems to me like the People are saying, why to pay that amount of Money for this when i can get something really better!
And something at the end:My informatics teacher said before some weeks :"Now that Microsoft is beginning to bring the better products like Apple the people buy more Appleproducts while they´ve buyed more Microsoftproducts when Apple was much more better than Microsot",and i think that´s in some way´s sadly true
As a developer people always get hung up on worrying about waiting until the next bet. Use the current stuff and enjoy it.

Shorter version: don't believe all the crap you're reading. Find out for yourself.
Longer version: /Rant on
The truth is, WP7 was behind the other 2 big OSes: iOS and Android. Now it's almost on par with iPhone and clearly surpasses Android. Imho, Java has its limitations (Symbian folks understood that) but I'm not criticizing it. They ARE ahead on releasing for phones and tablets and that puts them ahead. However, as I said, Android has its limitations (really, no flame intended - other OSes have theirs too) and that's why it's not really picked up yet. The main complain is that it's not easy to use, so it's definitely not for older people, girlfriends, folks who need simple and straight stuff, or your little sibling With that in mind, iPhone fills this gap and WP7 tries to go even further, by bridging that simple use with the other Windows services: XBOX/Office.
Now that the stage is accurate and complete, Android is based purely on advertising and that also shows in the quality. iPhone by comparison, is a much more mature, stable and "you" (read simple) oriented experience. WP7 tries to make it even simpler than that while integrating more into the phone.
Who is right (now)? Does it matter? We all decide where the future is, so if you like something, act on it, whatever your choice is. If you will believe other articles and make your decision based on other's experience, you'll end up regretting it, as it won't be yours. So if someone comes and tells people "X is going to be the one" they either have been an oracle (and think they still are) in their past lives or they're paid to say so
/Rant off
I believe you should never compare previous iterations of something to the current iteration. You should simply just use it, and see how useful it is in your own life. Nothing is "too late". If its usable and serves a good purpose for what it does, then it's fine.
Besides, if we were supposed to buy stuff based on marketshare, we'd all drive Toyota Corollas, use iPhones, eat McDonald's and listen to Lady GaGa.
Did MS say themselves at CES 2012 that they won't be at CES 2013?
It's never too late. Things are constantly changing. People will always be buying new phones to replace theirs. Hopefully in a few years Android is an unpleasant memory.

I think the only way one cant 'test' if it's too late or not is by doing the following:
Get a Windows Phone. Here in the UK you can return it or swap it for something else within 27 days unless you buy it one of the contracts or sales. If you get such a deal, get one. Try it for ALL 27 days. If it's not going to rock your boat, then in your opinion it is too late. It rocked my boat in just first 4 hours. In my opinion, it's bang on time into the game. It's our opinions. We spend time on this discussion board much more than what we used to back in the day during WM6 and WM6.5 in development sections. This changes nothing for Microsoft. They jumped into the market after epic failure of WM6 and WM6.5 followed by Apple and Google's success stories. Such a huge software giant won't have a board/team of members who wouldn't have thought of how late they are in the game. Why would a software company invest in a software and push marketing with it's partner as if there is no tomorrow (I think they can do much better marketing) if even one person involved thought they are 'too late' in the game.

They will have a presence at CES 2013 but won't have a big booth or keynote.
Microsoft, like Google, isn't really a consumer electronics company. They don't manufacture many devices, apart from Xbox. I'd expect to see plenty of Microsoft and Google products at CES 2013 from OEMs. Windows 8 will be out, so there'll probably be lots of Windows 8 devices (e.g. tablets etc) on show.
For Windows Phone, Nokia will be at CES 2013 promoting their WP8 devices. Nokia won best smartphone of CES 2012 for the Lumia 900, so obviously Windows Phone wasn't too late for CES 2012 It will be interesting to see what happens next year.
Just to keep some balance in here.
To say the Windows Phone has caught up with the iPhone is stretchier than Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four.
