the 5Gb cap - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

How easy or difficult has it been for you all to stay under the 5 gig cap? I have not yet exceeded it but I come within 100 megs almost every month by monitoring usage with 3g watchdog and just limiting myself. However, I do not feel like I am doing anything excessive. Its just web, youtube, music, and Pandora that is using most of the data. You know, the kinds of things one buys a $300 SGS II (with subsidy) for. I also tether to my Kindle to browse the web, for which I pay almost double my normal $20/month (I pay an extra $15/month just to have a built in feature re~enabled) without receiving any increase in my cap. All I'm doing is using the very features of my phone that tmobile advertises. Do you all have trouble staying under the cap? I feel like I have a ferrari that can do 200 mph (tmobiles 42 mbps network is fantastic in my area, delivering 10 to 30 mbps), but has a one gallon tank. Yes, I use wifi at home.
Finally, just how slow does the speed go if you do go over? Does the network connect to EDGE or stay on 4g and just slow down? How slow is it? I can't seem to get a straight answer. I know video and music wont work but can you still use the web like on EDGE or are we talking unusable GPRS like speed?
Thanks!

Unusable gprs speed. Even webpages time out.

I'm pretty sure Sprint knows that with the Netflix app going public internet usage will go up.
As long as you don't do blatant things such as torrent downloads and gaming you should be fine. I used 20 gb+ for like 3 months straight because i was streaming movies from my home computer + slingbox while I was away on business and Sprint didn't say a thing.
Unlimited really does mean unlimited. The way they are able to do this is thru the ten dollar add on they started doing for all new smart phones.
So just don't do a anything to attract attention to yourself and you will be fine

My intial thoughts

Just in case anybody cares.. thought I'd throw in my 2 cents after having it for a couple hours.
My last phone was the Tmobile galaxyS 4g . First as far as size.. normally I may have an issue with it but being so thin and light and the beauty of the screen makes up for the footprint. Biggest improvement for me would be internet cruising.. screen size/font size and general slick and quickness makes it a huge benefit over older phones for browsing. I typically use my tablet for light couch browsing.. but this phone may possibly change that. Flash video loading .. for example justin tv or twitch tv is insanely fast close to desktop speeds. Netflix works like a champ as well. Everything at this point has been pretty much instant.. this phone is bloody fast especially for being right out of the box.. will be cool to see how custom roms and kernels will do with it. Oh yeah and the gps is super quick to lock on.. 10 seconds or so versus an inconsistent 1 to 2 minutes with the original galaxy.
I would have to say the only downside of this for me is the network speeds.. 3g speed test in my area show if I'm lucky 1mb at best.. and 3-4mbps with 4g. My tmobile was a solid 5+mbps at the very least.. I traded tmobile's faster yet limited network for Sprint's slower yet steadier and consistent wider spread network.
Thanks for your initial impressions. I'm also making the switch from T-Mobile to Sprint and knew I'd have to compromise with network speed. T-Mobile's HSPA+ is pretty damn fast and Sprint has paused their WiMax rollout. I had an Evo before returning it and noticed that WiMax was tough to get indoors. I'm hoping Sprint will be making a major infrastructure transition over to LTE (it's in the plans) and by switching now I'll grandfather into a nice unlimited plan.
25% off monthly, unlimited data, nights @ 7pm, unlimited mobile to any mobile, google voice integration made the switch pretty easy for me.. but I don't expect data speeds to be that impressive
25 percent off? that'd be great.. how? Sprint guy told me to join a local credit union and I'd receive 10 percent off.. I thought that was great.
Also yeah it kinda sucks about Wimax.. are they going to transition completely away from it?
I think data speeds have been getting worse for Sprint as Boost and Virgin mobile get more popular .. that's alot of data usage

Most Data used

Just checked my 4G data usage and seen I hit 11 GB is this excessive?

Not really, there's people who use 50+ gigs and bragging about it.

Yes I used over 5GB on slow ass sprint 3g

I'm usually at 6gig and I live on this thing.
no 4g around me though.
I used to use about 1-2 GB on 3G, but then I got a wifi router for home.
Now I barely use 200 MB. Plus moving files between PC and phone w/o cables @3 MB/s is pretty nice.
My idiot friend said he used over 300gb one month because he was downloading ps3 games.... Idiots like that are the reason we won't have unlimited forever.... The odd thing is he said that he never got a warning or disruption in his service. I never even get close to you guys cuz I am on wifi virtually everywhere I go

Did you hit 11GB through phone usage or through tethering? My home internet provider in my building went out of business so I had to start tethering and I hit 18GB of 4G. From what I understand, Sprint doesn't care as long as you aren't roaming. Before tethering, I would go through about 3-4GB a month.

300GB? I think that would be a pretty good reason on their part. He's using 20-30X the amount of data the average data hog here uses (or admits to using). And that's 300X the amount of data the average user (people who live in the 21st century and have wifi at home) uses.
That's obnoxious even compared to other abusers!
Other than illegally downloading warez, I can' think of a single legitimate way a normal person could go through that much bandwidth. Even streaming Netflix... that's 300+ movies (from my experience watching data use on the phone). The hogs here who stream Pandora every day even stay in the low 2 digits of data use.
That idiot friend deserves to get booted!
I hit around 1.3GB last month on 4G (Usage reset yesterday). And I used around a Gig or so on 3G. Im typically always on Wifi though, so my data isnt as high as it would be if it werent for me using Wifi. I get AWESOME 4G coverage at my apartment too
used +8gbs of 4g on primary line this past month, streaming like crazy....bought nba league pass, only use google cloud music for music and heavy surfing. im not worried about overages, ive got a smarthphone to use not stare at.
as for that 300gb claim....id say youre friend is just a douche and didnt even come close to that. i doubt you could even pull 300 gigs of data in a month due to poor sprint coverage/service
The most I ever used was 6.5 gigs and that's because I was testing this torrentlt client on my phone. Lol I downloaded the entire Naruto series.

My highest has been 25GB on 4g and 2GB on 3g. I'm already at almost 5GB on 4g n not even at 1GB yet on 3g since I barely use that crap. I got 17 more days left in this cycle so i'm sure I'll be at about 20GB by the end of this cycle.

I think you're good...a lot of us have hit high numbers for one reason or another and if you actually have a good signal and utilize your phone for streaming music and uploading pics, etc its not hard to hit a higher number.
When I moved to a new place a few months ago I tethered my revue and two laptops for a couple of weeks until I had broadband hooked up and hit 48 gigs...no letters in the mail. I get great 4G at home and 3G for that matter and average around 10 gigs a month combined usage. Sprint is great if you're in a strong signal area.
I don't understand why a home ISP internet provider can give you all the data you want but cell companies decided to cap people and offer tiered plans. It is not like it cost them more if I use 2 gigs or 4 gigs of data.
Is is a real shame that mobile providers took this direction with data. Getting anything more then the 2 or 3 gig plan just makes your cell phone bill an outrages unaffordable price.
Sprint is great that they still offer unlimited data but when you are using 3G and getting 40kbs what is the point? How could Sprint have ever let there network get this bad. When I had the EVO 4G and I never needed to turn of 4G. Since it killed the battery within hours I was able to use 3G for anything I wanted to without a problem.
Now, if you are not in a 4G area, you phone is almost useless as far as data is concerened. Streaming anything is almost near impossible.
If Sprint actually fixes their network and has LTE 2 years from now I am sure they will not be unlimited either. If they were to tier now, why would anyone in their right mind stay with them? Like Sprint took everything else away from their customers, unlimited data will be next. They just need a network that they can pull that BS on...
Depends on who your ISP is.
ATT has a 100gb limit, and I get a lousy 2.5mbs for $38 month...
Comcast has a 250gb limit.

There may not be a direct monetary cost, but bandwidth being consumed by one user is bandwidth unavailable for other users to use; it is a rival resource. Users who use a large amount of data place a higher burden on the network than users who use a typical amount and cause data speeds for these users to be lower than they would be otherwise. This reduction in service quality experienced by other users could cause them to leave the network and cost the service provider.

DSL users are capped at 150GB, U-Verse has no cap since AT&T can't distinguish the TV usage from actual internet usage, so they don't cap that at all.

[Q] Evade Throttling/Data Cap? [tmobile]

So I recently switched from Sprint to Tmo. And so far I can say the speeds are at least 3x faster if not more. Which is great! The only thing is I'm not used to a data limit so I'm scared to even use data if I can't find wifi. But I forced myself to use pandora and memedroid with some mild app downloading and before I started using my hotspot, I managed to hit 700mb with 1-2 weeks left in my cycle. So 2.5gb is pretty good imo data and price wise.
Then, as I was celebrating my birthday yesterday at my friends house, I decided to try out my hotspot (Stock rom) and watch some netflix. Watched ONE episode of south park and pushed my data to around 1.1gb. Figuring I was just about at the end of my cycle, and wanting to see how bad throttling could be, I decided to use it again and stream a comedy special and reached within about 45 minutes.
Dear god I had no idea throttling could be so terrible. I was figuring 3g speeds comparable to sprints network (Which is still somewhat terrible) but this 2g is HORRENDOUS! 15kb just makes me want to cry. I'm amazed we don't even get dial-up speeds. But at least they don't charge overages which is nice, so no real complaints.
Answer me this though, I've seen a few threads mentioning unrestricted hotspots and came across this thread which talks about evading the throttle. Is this still possible; and what exactly does it mean to unrestrict the hotspot? Say I upgrade to unlimited, I remember hearing it throttles after like 5-10gb even with unlimited, is this true?

I'm using jovy's Darthstalker ROM and the unrestricted hotspot is still working great. And if you have the truly unlimited data plan they do not throttle you at all, since switching to it back in September I have routinely hit 20-30 GB a month and not been slowed down.
I've used 7.1gb of my unlimited plan and no throttle, also I've used over 10gb and no throttle either.. As far as the hotspot, I think it still works but I've read people saying that no matter what you do they will eventually find out and block the hotspot access

I was on a 5gb plan before and would cap 2 weeks in. I upgraded to unlimited data with no cap and I ended up reducing my bill by 6 or dollars.

I can't say because I don't use tethering, but that's what I have seen people say.. just go ahead and try it, the only thing they will do is block the hotspot access till your bill is due, no throttle
Edit: nevermind I was thinking you asked something else lol i forgot you didn't have unlimited data

Tmobile speeds are horrible? 1 day old unlimited plan

I recently switched to tmobile on my s6 edge g925t to get away from metro.... I even have an lte extender set up. I get 3-4 bars of lte And my speeds are very slow...any idea why...I have the default apn.. 1mbps download. ..

its the area your in, (worked at t-mobile )
if you go complain they most likely would say maybe its the sim card, let me replace it for free or some BS
T-mobile internet speed sucks... Unless you get the unlimited high speed data plan. Get it? "High Speed Data Plan". It's what they want you to buy to get faster internet and honesty i have it and it picks up a little bit. But they literally had to send me a new phone and i rooted it just so my internet can be faster... there's also apps that doesn't require rooting to make your internet faster. But rooting it will help A LOT.
I've been pretty happy with my speeds....
Call and check your act. Whoever set it up may have set you up throttled l..I've seen it and put out Cs fires a lot

This was my speed in the Suwanee, Georgia area this morning, Unbelievable! Fastest I've ever had by at least 20Mbps download.
That's crazy. Can you get a screen shot of the results tab from that app?
Yeah sure. I usually get great speeds in that area which is near my work but this time it spiked up to over 100. Crazy.
No complaints here with Tmobile
I noticed my data connections had been reduced since I changed my plan to 10gb per line since I added another person. Is it supposed to be slower?
