Is there an app or a custom rom mod that can silence my camera without having to turn the actual sound down on the phone?
Just delete the audio file or rename it with the extension .bak. You can also do this for the low battery sound. I don't remember the location off hand, but it isn't hard to find if you poke around.

Which Filemanager can remove or delete systemfiles?
I tried Astro File Manager, Explorer and ES Explorer but they all are not able to remove files

Root Explorer can, assuming you are rooted.
i used to run an update.zip i made after flashing roms, to remove a load of junk apps, install a couple and also remove this click sound.
I've not made a version for the GNex yet though as i havent bothered with custom roms.

Make sure you click the Mount R/W button first or it will not let you edit the file. I would recommend just renaming the file camera_click.ogg.bak - never know when you'll want it back!
With ES file explorer you can also access the system partition. Just have a look to the options (of course you need a rooted phone).
Thanks to this thread, my camera/camcorder shutter is now silent- but i still have the loud focus-confirm noise. I can't find the file for that in the media folders to rename/delete.
Anybody got an idea for that?

hi all DHD users,
Just got myself a Sandisk 32Gb sdcard. I notice that ES Explorer is not working if I enable the root options in Settings.
I see a folder without name. I cannot access it, nor I can do anything about it. I notice that once I disable the root options I can see my files again.
Searched the forum and didn't find what I'm looking for. Sorry if this question is ever answered, but is there a fix for this?

The best thing would be check if the problem persists with other kinds of file explorer. Then you will know if it is ES file explorer or sdcard.
Maybe defragment or formatting helps?

I did try to reformat my sdcard. Both through PC and DHD. But the problem is still there. How to do defragment?

Forget the defragment...it wont help you anyway that was just something stupid i came up with...
But have you tried to check if you have same problem with other file explorers? Try for example, linda file manager or astrid or root explorer

Ermm, Astro File Manager worked, but I cannot enter /data/system. /data folder is empty. It's just like ES File Explorer without root options.

Well mate i don't know if there is a point in doing this, but maybe trying to fix permissions via CWM might help? I read somewhere that fixing permissions via CWM deletes pics from sms or so...

haha, yea, actually all I wanted to do is to delete batterystats.bin. I guess I'll just do it in recovery mode then.
I guess the only work around is:
if root options is enabled, disable it and then go back, you will see all the folders again.
then enable the root options, when you want to edit the system/data files, for example delete batterystats.bin fille.
I am at a loss. I have found a thousand people on the interwebs that seem to have this problem but I have been unable to find a single solution.
I have searched these forums and every other android forum I can find. Hopefully I'm not posting this in the completely wrong forum but at this point I'm so fed up I'm seeing spots.
I want to use File Expert. I like it, it's pretty, it SEEMS like it might be useful to a person who wants to copy/move files.
But, it just says "operation failed" when I try and copy files into a system directory. (I have some ringtones, alarms, etc that I want to be available even if I'm in usb storage mode so I like to move them into the system directory).
I can move the files from a terminal emulator (pain in the you know) but Root Explorer (ugly) is the only file manager I can find that actually works to move them.
Am I stuck with Root Explorer or is there something I can do to get other file managers to actually work?
Yes I have enabled the root exploring function in File Expert and every option that i believe is applicable. I also like Anttek (quite visually appealing to me) but it doesn't work either.
Try es file explorer you have to have root permissions to move system dir apps and so forth in the settings of es file go down and check root explorer and mount the system as writeable and all your issues will be solved

Maybe the other file managers did not obtain superuser permission properly, or don't like the new version of busybox, or just don't like Epics...but Biggie steered you the right way.

I know in es file explorer you have to go into the apps settings to give the app root permissions so it can get to /system and all that jazz. Maybe file expert has the same deal in the apps settings.
So I tried installing a ROM for my Galaxy Nexus, and installed it uncorrectly so decided to do a full factory wipe from Clockwork Mod, and since i've done this I decided to install 4.2.1 mmuzzy rom + ZENSeries kernel along with it, I also decided to look at my storage to look at my storage, and it has said I have aprox. 10gb being used, I know the reason as to why (When I did a wipe it also did a backup of everything I had before that wipe apparently) but the problem is, is that I can't access those certain files to delete them, ive tried using ASTRO file viewer, and I just tried using my computer to delete them.
Any tips?
Oh and if anyone wants to know, i'm using the Sprint Galaxy Nexus (toroplus) w/ Android 4.2.1 mmuzzy + ZENSeries Kernel
They should be in the CWM folder.

They should be there, that's where they are stored.
Astro file manager doesn't look beyond the sdcard folder, the clockworkmod folder should be at /data/media, use a root explorer to find it.

I use the latest TWRP Recovery, which has an in-built file manager. It works perfectly fire transferring files from one location to another, deleting files, guilders, etc.

To OP: If you are used to Astro File Manager than I think using ES File Explorer with root permissions is easier for you than root explorer.
Here are the steps if you are interested:
1) Download ES File Explorer from the Play Store and run it.
2) Click on the botton right 3 dots
3) Click settings
4) Scroll down to "Other Settings" and choose "Root settings"
5) Check the first three options "Root Explorer", "Up to Root" and "Mount File System"
Now if you start ES File Explorer then you can go up one level by clicking the "up" icon in the main screen then go to the directory mentioned by Mach3.2 which is /data/media to find the "clockworkmod" folder

Now i'm getting 2 different results, I followed your instructions on using ES Explorer and that's working, but all the files I want to delete are under /sdcard/, ES Explorer show Alarms, Music, Android, etc., the recovery explorer shows mostly the same thing, but it has a folder named "0", and ES Explorer isn't showing that.

I am running Paranoid Android 4.5 beta. I am trying to copy a sound file to /system/media/audio/notifications but it fails. I have root and I made sure it is mounted as R/W in root explorer but I can't do it. I can copy a file to my 'ringtones' folder. Any thoughts?
I just think its the way KK handles things...try different apps

I fixed this problem on my note 10.1 gnabo rom with an xposed module. Now I can use my sd how I want not how google thinks I should

It's called ChargingStarted.ogg and it's located in System/media/audio/ui. You can use an app like ES File Explorer to copy it to another location. If you want the sound to show in your notification sounds make a folder on the internal SD card (normally 0) called Media. Inside the media folder make two more folders called Ringtone and Notifications. Put a copy of ChargingStarted.ogg in the Notifications folder and it will show with your normal notification sounds.

Does this require root? I cannot locate the System folder using ES File Explorer upgraded version. Also my device is the S9 SM-G960W if that makes a difference.

Does not require root and you need to navigate back to the very root of the device, not /sdcard, further back than that where it shows just /
Total Commander can do it too
I don't know ES file Explorer options, but with the Asus file manager, you have to go to settings and show hidden files and folders. Then you can back up to the root folder. Then you'll find "System".
Samsung's own file manager won't do that. Google's Files app can't either.

Navigating not an issue, well versed. For some reason ES Pro will not show anything off root. Maybe a setting wrong although I went over a few times. That being said pro tip re: TC - showed everything - file copied and functional in under a minute. Thanks so much, appreciate it!

I switched from ES to TC a few weeks ago, discovered TC uses SMB2 for LAN transfers, whereas ES must use SMB1 and is pathetically slow, with TC I can transfer GB videos via WiFi to a shared folder on the PC in no time
ES can definitely show root, maybe need to enable a setting like you say, I don't have it installed atm though, iirc I used the nav bar at the top to get there, think I just pressed on the / icon, or as far back as it would show, and then the next dir would show the / to press, something like that
