[HELP] Screen not shutting off - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Help pls! I have had this for about 2 weeks, no issues. none. suddenly from today morning, my screen wont shut down. Even when i press the power button it comes back up. and the battery status goes to "usb charging" once every 15-20 secs. it flashes usb charging, screen goes on, then the charging symbol dissapears. it keeps happening, phone screen wont turn off. been happening the past hour n half. i wiped battstats. i did factory reset. wiped again. nothing. keeps happening. wat do i do?????? right now i am letting it drain, when drained fully, m gonna charge it up and see if it happens again. m on aokp build 11/franco's 7.1.

I think you should sent the telephone to SAT

faulty usb
Had this on a water damaged galaxy s2. Replaced the usb flex cable and that solved the problem. Check the usb connector to make sure it doesnt have any dirt stuck in it.

wat usb flex cable?? you mean the charger cable or the connector on the phone?

I had the same issue the other morning. Blew on the connector a few times and it was gone. The charger that came with my Gnex made a high pitch noise (probably the caps) so I stopped using it. Haven't had the problem since.

i havent ever used the gn charger. i use the usb cable from my kindle. no probs so far, suddenly today!!!! even i blew on the connector, nothing happened so far.
i drained the battery and i am charging again, lets c.....
In the meantime, any more help pls????

this is the issue.

Any news to this as this has happened to me too.. dunno what´s wrong yet..

Did you both (having this problem) use non GNex chargers? You should really only use the charger that comes with the phone

well my problem hasn't re occurred. It got magically solved.
And you should research your things before you post,it has been widely discussed in this forum that it is just a standard micro USB cable. I used another standard cable from my kindle and galaxy s phone. worked perfectly till now. Now after this problem I used a Nokia charger which worked perfectly as expected.
My guess is that some particle got inside the uncovered USB port causing some unwanted connections.

Dont be rude. I thought you were talking about the wall connector portion.

Does it charge on the wall okay? I would try a different kernel out, see if that remedies it. If not, I would be suspicious of a damaged/faulty USB cable(they do/can go bad), or a faulty battery. Have you tried clearing your battery stats yet? I would do that, as well.

It's happened to me a few times. Sometimes the cable wiggles or something I guess.
I just unplug and replug and its fine.

I've had this happen consistently over the past few weeks, only with my car dock though. It charges fine both in my dock at work and on the standard charger at home. I'm using a Seidio dock, and I've done multiple things to find the issue. Both my wife and I have EVO 4g's with Seidio car docks. I swapped my dock for hers, no change. I swapped out the charging cable, no change. I used a different charger, no change. I tried my normal setup on my wife's phone, no change.
I don't know what else to do to figure the issue out. I have ordered a new charger that supplies 2.1A, as I've read that a low charger output could be the issue.
I am confused, as this combination has worked fine for about 8 months now. Why all of a sudden is it no longer charging properly? The battery could be the issue, as I know that the chemistry changes over time, but I'd like to know for certain before swapping out the battery.
I'd love to hear from others who are having the same issue.
Seidio Dock issue?
I've seen a few other posts with the same problem. Particularly this one: Post #1175
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16499063&postcount=1175
The one thing that is similar is that he is using the same car dock as I am, the Seidio dock.
I've been playing with this a bit, and have managed to isolate it to the Kernel. I flashed back to MikFroyo and the problem disappeared. It charged perfectly fine.
In Gingerbread (MikG 2.42), with both the stock Kernel and the Freedom Kernel, the phone won't charge properly in the dock. I've been keeping an eye on it with Battery Monitor Widget. Here are the results:

While I am driving, the kernel is showing a 100% full battery, however, it is discharging instead of going into the float mode. As soon as the phone is removed from the dock, it goes from 100% down to 80%. When I put it onto a desk charger, it charges fine with a normal float charge. If I remove the cord from the Seidio dock and plug it into the phone (with a mini -> micro USB adapter), it will charge normally and go into float mode.
Something was changed in the GB Kernel update that affected this behavior. Unfortunately, I'm not a programmer to get that deep to find out where the problem is.
Is there any help possible from anyone???
This always happens to me on AOSP roms. If you happen to be on an AOSP rom, just plug the charger back in then take it out.

I've tried that previously with no luck. I'm using a Sense ROM, currently MikG 2.42, but I had the same issue with the stock GB ROM.

i really dont recommend spending $50 bucks
i have a powermat with my evo 4g and i really dont recommend it...
its a cool device but youl find some definite flaws, you already know battery time is really short, so i needed to charge it every once in a while in the car or at the office so i had to disconnect the microusb thingy from the battery cover in order to plug the car charger or the pc cable, after a couple of weeks the little plastic tether broke so i have to keep an eye not to lose it since its small.
another thing that annoys me its that since you leave it all night the powermat kind of shuts off after battery is full only to turn on again after i dont know when.. the result is that sometimes in the morning i woke up and found out that my charge wasnt at 100% (or even 60%, dont know if its some power management failure or maybe my kernel).
hope this helps

I have the same power mat and I agree with most points except the charging overnight bit. yes it does turn off when the battery is full, but as long as the phone is sleeping properly it should be very close to fully charged when you pull it off. mines always been full, so if you're having an issue I would definitely try a different rom/kernel or track down the offending app.
The little charging jumper is a bit annoying when you need to use a car charger, but so far mine hasn't come off it's rubbery tether. my biggest gripe with this charging mat is that the phone becomes incompatible with most cases, including my trusty otterbox commuter. It's definitely a cool thing to cut the wires and it's hard to beat the price ($39) but it does have it's downfalls...

Phone won't turn on :(

I've been experiencing some problems with charging and I read in out of the threads that I could use a bit of electrical contact cleaner and it would work. And now my screen protector is ruined and my phone won't fully turn on. It boots up, vibrates then it turns off. What do I do I'm freaking out right now. I'm going to put it rice to see if that works at all Anybody know what I should do I'm really scared right now.
Exactly what did you use? Link to the product.
Yea a little more detail on what you used would be very helpful.
Jesus I feel like the biggest idiot of life. You guy don't realize how F*cking stupid I am. After being in a complete rush I used the wrong type of cleaner. So After I soaked it in rice and took it out I actually used a proper Electrical Contact cleaner and and now everything is fine. But I am now certain that the cable is done because it wasn't charging or showing that it was plugged in so I used my friend's Blackberry cable and everything is fine. I'm so relieved right now.

Lol glad to hear that its fixed.... we all make mistakes
Thanks, the only problem I'm still back to is that it won't charge, which is what was happening before. I am not sure whether it is the charger itself or the micro-usb charging port (Which I could replace). Phone thinks it's charging with the lightning bolt in the top right, but it won't charge...if I go to battery in the settings it says discharging but in the charts it that it was charging all this time.

Tbh I don't know but this is a educated guess.... seeing that it shows that its charging on the phone means that its receiving the charge. A good test would be to take out the battery and plug your phone into the charger. If it works that means that the port is OK and you'll need a new battery. If not then its the port. Hope this helps.

What do you mean by if it works, as in if the phone boots up and works normally when plugged in?
When you take out the battery and plug it in to the charger it should work normally as its getting power from the plug.

What on earth is this crap?
Well that's odd..... idk
Meh whatever, I smelled and it was just the smell of the wrong cleaner I used, luckily it was just on the plastic parts so I'm safe, I disassembled the rest and found the charging port. I'm ordering a new one for $10 shipped from NJ and not from HK so I should get it soon. Thanks for your help btw. I really appreciate it. :good:
Good luck bud
Update: I just replaced charging port literally just now and it still won't charge. It still says "Charging" but it's not charging. In the Settings it says discharging.
Could it be the battery? I'm thinking of buying a new one and seeing if that works.
Updated Update: The 6% that had remained on my battery before I took my phone apart to repair it is now gone leaving the battery with 0% charge. But, I believe I may have found the problem! If the phone is unplugged from my charger and I try to turn it on it won't turn on at all. But if I plug it into my charger it will boot up past vibrate to the Nexus logo (The X) and then it dies out. I think that the problem is in the charger that has a input voltage drop so it's not charging enough to keep it going. I'm going to use my friend's Samsung Charger (From his Galaxy S II) to see if that will solve the problem.

Anyone have problem with usb cable too easy to pull out?

It seems the body of the phone is so thick at the bottom towards the front, that the usb connector sits way too deep, because of that some micro usb connectors can't reach all the way through to properly lock in. The cable that came with the phone has such thick plastic around the micro usb connector that when pulled a little sideways it acts like a crowbar, pulling the plug out the connector, all it needs a slight pull to the side and the cable disconnects.
Looking at the hole (screen is up) it seems the bottom edge of the metal casing of the connector is almost at the edge of the plastic:

however top edge is about 1/8" away from the edge:
That 1/8" of plastic is what stands between the connector and cable.
I just checked two other phones I have and their metal casing is at most 1/16" away from the edge of plastic.
Cable from HTC One X that has much slimmer plastic at the connector works almost perfectly, but it still not as secure as on other phones though.

The purpose of this topic is not seek for a solution, but rather gather information if more people have the same issue, if it's a design flaw or defective selected units.
The wiggling is inside the connector, not the connector itself.

This has been discussed before on another thread. It is a widely known issue. The thread mostly concerned AT&T Note IIs, but it appears it's on pretty much every single variant. Last I checked (and it's been a while) there was no solution other than being lucky enough to get your phone replaced for free.
I am on my second Note II (i-317) and I had this very issue on my first device, albeit, the problem seemed to have been a lot worse on my first phone. It's not so bad on this one. Even the Best Buy rep who I've been dealing with for a while, mentioned the issue to ME, when I went in to complain about my terrible battery life on my original Note. He said he was having the same issues with his Note II. He said it's almost like Samsung built the stock charger end too small. He said he didn't think it was a design defect of the phone, itself, because when he uses other non-stock chargers they fit perfectly.
same here.. at first i thought someone unplug my charger but then it's happening most of the time.. i can't think of any solution so i'm just dealing with it..
Mine came with Defective cable as well.
For the fix I trimmed some plastic sleeve off so it slid in further gets bite now
I also purchased kindle replacement cable from amazon that fits much snugger -
http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Kindle-Micro-Cable-Keyboard/dp/B006BGZJJ4/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

GNex will not charge but thinks it is.

Ive been having this issue with my GNex since I got it. I believe the previous owner had the same issue which is why I got a great deal.
When plug the phone in it will show a lightning bolt through the icon in the corner and the lock screen says that it is charging. When I go to the battery screen, however, it always says "not charging". Most importantly, the phone doesn't charge.
It will connect to the computer via usb cable.
When I first got it I found the micro-usb jack was all mangled, pins were all bent. I assumed this was the problem and I replaced the jack with a new one. The problem did not go away. Not only that but I built a cradle charger that uses the pogo pins and that ALSO doesn't work. I do not believe it is software related because this problem has persisted over major updates. Its running stock 4.2
Has anyone seen this problem before???

Same story for me
I do. Same story for me. Bought it used, Opened up, fully charged, used it, loved it. Two days and i put it to charge overnight. Next morning, phone is powered off. But connected, and it says its charging. I have the exact same issue. Changed the USB charging module ( thought about making a POGO cradle) , bought new batterys ( even a hyperion 3800) , wall charger for the batterys.
Issue is not gone. Im using the phone at the moment with a PowerPack 2200mah . So it thinks it is connected to sumthin and not using the battery. Anoying but it lets me use my phone. Sometimes it charges to 20-30% , 60% once . But the issue is there. I've read a lot and i think is not the charging module itself but the MAX17040 fuel gauge chip that reads the SoC on the batterys.
Anyone else?
My old roommate had this problem and sent hers in for a replacement.

Sorry, you replaced the jack of the wall charger or the microusb module inside the gnex? If i understood correctly and the wall charger had a jack with bent pins, that means that almost certainly either the bent pins damaged the microusb module of the gnex or the damage to the pins was maybe caused while charger was connected to the phone. The fact that the phone still connects to the charger still doesn't mean there is no damage, it could be just a pin, the "wrong" pin, to be damaged.
Replacing the microusb module is not something too difficult with the gnex and it's not too expensive either. You could think about looking for a spare part online and replace it.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I replaced the microusb module inside the phone.
My current strategy is to use an external battery charger and two batteries.
I think this is software related. It just happened to my Nexus 4 today. I rebooted it and it fixed itself.

Pretty sure its not software related. I had this problem in 4.1 and now I have it in 4.2. Unless there is some more basic software that is not updated with the OS.
