Great price for a great phone, enjoy

You're going to love the phone. I do wish it had NFC but this phone is so amazing without it.

I have both phones. Even though we don't have ICS (yet) you will love this phone. IMO its superior in every way.

Thank you yea I signed two years of her life away but she doesn't mind she's coming from a blackberry saw the stuff I did to my nexus and wanted one of her own. Nexus s would've been better with some more ram
Ok so now how to root I noticed there was like a one click root.....I'd like to keep it stock while I get accustomed. And Odin root. Which one should I do?

Stock's actually a pretty good experience, but you'll want to odin to stock EL26 to get rid of CiQ. I'm running stock EL26 right now and it's silky smooth. The thing you'll like the most about this phone will be the screen.

Can you please link me to one? Does it have a custom recovery baked in?
I was kinda wanting to flash one of those mods that give ya the ICS screen transitions

Anyone of the Odin root methods in development will work rather easily for you or you can try sfhub root method which seems to be the way everyone is going. Check the stickies for great info and just do your homework before you jump in.
Even though you like it stock there are some nice custom roms in development that run great. Skim through them and see which one best matches your needs. If you were to ask me to pick I would say all of them... These guys have been doing a great job

I odined this,

then flashed this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390393
The first link is to Stock EL26, directly from Samsung Servers. The second one is a custom recovery that in my opinion is #1 at the moment. No problems here. If you're wanting to flash a theme or add-ons, you'll want to flash the deodexed stock version from the first link.

sfhub's auto root script works awesome and I highly recommend looking at that. Its really easy, and does what you need it to do.

ok so my eptouch arrived...now to root stock for now....anything wrong with ek02????

Did the same thing gave my girl the nexus with ics and she loves it. Even I love her phone as much as mine.

The short time I was on ek02 it seemed decent, but thats a limited timeframe of running it. I have recently been running Blazer ROM 3.4 (which is EL26) with a nice ICS theme.

New to the S2, Tell me what to do!

I got tired of the Sensation and got a t mobile store to match Best Buys price of $199.99 on the Gs2. So far im loving the phone. Rooted and flashed Juggernaut 4.1. I guess my only disappointment would be the dev support here. I made the mistake of assuming it would be similar to the i9100.
But anyways, any other suggestions of what i should do to my phone? opinions on what is the best rom/kernel? so far i have only tried juggernaut, its smooth as hell, but I always love trying new roms. Any stable miui roms?
well u did the essentials, its possible to run roms from the samsung skyrocket too (remember to read the instructions first)
only thing i can say is to use your phone.
that's awesome. will i find the instruction in the skyrocket forums or around here?
Yes the instructions are on this link. only thing u are doing different is after u flash the rom u flash a conversion file then whatever kernel u want. aosp roms dont work according to the thread only touchwiz based roms

camera, data, in call audio and a few other things dont work on it

IMO You have done the best you can do with this phone at this point.
Also I must say I made the same mistake thinking that this phone had the same support as the i9100.
Best bet is to stay where you are at and wait for CM9
That's what I plan on doing. The Sensation was rumored to be getting ICS within a month or two... any eta for the gs2?

True, but after how Samsung has been slapping TW over ICS, I am not looking forward to there ICS anytime soon. Hopefully CM9 will produce something for our phone soon.
I thought about switching to another gs2 varient but I like that this phone can use both att and tmobile 3g. Also didn't wanna spend a extra $100 for the g nexus.
It's kinda neat having lots of choices for roms but my only reason for flashing roms were to remove bloat and run a little bit better than stock. With this phone it runs better stock than most phones with their best kernels and roms flashed.

Thank you....I do like the thinness of the phone compared to my evo.....it is pretty large though!
I am VERY familar with rooting and restoring roms on my evo, I think I did it about 100+ times.
It was pretty simple, download Unrevoked and bam! I am looking at Odin and Sfhub's one touch root method.....so...One of them should be fine.
I dont understand what the modems are used for. Do most ROMS come with them? I understand that they are used to communicate with Carrier towers...but is the higher version always better? What are they compared to on an Evo, if at all.
Thanks!

Yeah, I just got mine last night and this is what I plan on doing at work today. Mine is on el29 so as I understand it I would want to flash rooted el29 then install cwm in autoroot. Once I've had it for a few days I'll probably start testing out third party roms but I have a weird thing where I like to run stock(ish) for a little bit just so I get to know the phone and know what "baseline" performs like. Also, I already like this phone stock more than the Evo with Sense. Touchwiz seems much less intrusive and overly glossy. Only little annoyance I have is that when I did OTA update to el29 I lost scrolling wallpaper so I may jump to calkulins rom just to get that back.

Ive had my Epic 4g Touch for a couple of days now. Im coming from the Evo 3D. Touchwiz sucks compared to sense but this phone feels more powerful and smooth. Evo 3D also has a bigger dev support here in xda. Hopefully this changes considering this is a relatively new phone. I love the big screen on this phone and how thin it is. Im keeping it untill HTC comes out with at 4.5+ inch phone. Go to youtube and looks for qbkimg77 videos on this phone. They are very helpful.

First of all unrevoked is only for HTC devices in the Dev section you will find the Auto root its quite simple not as Unrevoked but quite helpful, then I would recomend you to run stock with root a couple of days and start with Calkulin's ROM, UnNamed, and other stockish roms with goodies and then flash everything you like as kernels(Rogue Hitman, LosKernel, etc) Modems(EG30, EK02, EL29, etc) of course rooted and other ROMs (CM7, CM9, etc) and always have a backup and Odin installed in your computed

Finally Got This Phone

I used my upgrade from my Nexus S 4g and decided to come over the the S2 on Sprint. I intend to play with this phone till my wife upgrade is in August which she will take the S2 in hopes that I will get the S3 by then.
Been reading up on these posts on here and I think I got it but wanted to make sure.
1. I need to Odin to get root with el29?
2. Never flash, wipe, reset data in ICS CWM?
3. Is it me or are there no Kernels like AirKernel for this phone?
4. I plan to go with CNA as I had on my Nexus. Love that rom anything you would like to share about this rom?
Any advice on the questions would be great and to be honest I really only post here and there but I'm always on here. Been here since the release of the Evo 4G.
Thanks.
Thanks and it awesome to be a part of the S2 community. WOW.

Sort of asking for help, those are things that I've read up on. Just kind of a ice breaker more then anything.
Welcome to the party and congrats on the new phone.
The only question I can answer is #1, which is yes, to get an easy start just Odin sfhub's one-click EL29 for root, then read, read, read in the development section for all the goodies available.
Happy flashing and remember, if you brick your phone it's all on you.
1. I rooted just fine without Odin.
2. Yes it's also recommended you do that with most roms overall to avoid technical difficulties later on.
3. Idk what airkernel is, but there seems to be a limited choice if kernels for ginger.
4. CNA? Don't think I've seen a ROM called that around here but what do I know? I'm just a newbie...

You just have to have thicker skin over here, people may seem a little harsh at times (me included) but at the core of their comments you typically find the truth you needed. If you read around enough you'll see there are a lot of good people in this community. I'd suggest you start with the thread below to see what I mean.

Most important of all, just follow the #1 rule of thumb for the internet, don't take things personally and you'll be just fine.
Oh, also, don't expect anyone here to a)kiss your butt (well maybe iSaint j/k lol), b)hold your hand or c)pat you on your wee little noggin when you f*ck up because you didn't read and ended up bricking your phone. That is all.
Everybody moved to the Evo One. This place is a ghost town now.

Coming from a Evo then a Nexus S 4G I can't believe the trouble ones has to go through flashing roms that are ICS.
Odin is easy so that is nice but still. Seems like a lot of effort.
This phone is sweet. I just got to wait till I actually have time from work, kids and family so I can sit down and root this think and flash away.
Excited.
I can honestly say if it weren't for Odin and sfhub's one-click goodies I would probably still just be an observer on this forum. But he made it easy and then I learned to flash recovery and in doing so was able to start flashing Calkulin's custom ROMs. Although that's as far as I've gotten for now it's a long way from where I began and I'm excited for what's around the corner.

Once the source is released and official ota's are out im sure all the kinks will be ironed out. Development for ICS is still early for this phone. Using Odin isnt that bad, you can still flash a rom in about five minutes.

It may seem a bit overwhelming at first but it really is incredibly easy. Just make sure your CWM is stock (just flash CM7 or GB Miui), and then you should have no issues flashing ICS.

[Q] Root my 2.3.6 or wait for ICS upgrade?

Hi all,
I'm still on the fence about rooting my t989 and so I'm looking for advice. I got the 2.3.6 update and I really want ICS but I'm willing to wait for it though. Also, I'm pretty conservative when it comes to risks such as rooting due to warranties, bricking, and losing functionality. However, I'll be traveling for a while and tethering could be handy and titanium backup has always been attractive to me. But what happens if ICS comes out? I think I loose root if I update OTA, but I should be able to get root again. I'm not a big fan of real 3rd party software because I don't want to work with bugs so if I got a new ROM, it may only be CM9 or similar as reliability is important to me. And then I don't want a new ROM if it doesn't use the Linux Kernel since Ubuntu is developing that OS to share that Kernel. Do I even need a new ROM? I think touchwiz is fine. Pages of apps are better than scrolling through them IMO.
So any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks!
Root it unless you plan on running stock ics. Chances are the ota will be releases here before it hits your phone we have a couple really nice ics roms right now. Don't know what your waiting for lol

Edit: Unrooting the phone is the same process as rooting except you flash a different file to the phone.
My suggestion is to root. But don't sweat CM9 it is pretty buggy right now because its still beta and isn't officially supported on our phones. But there are plenty of stable ICS roms now and even if u don't care for the few bugs that some may have, there are also some amazing GB rooms out there too.
Just my 2 cents.

But I don't NEED a new ROM do I? Doesn't it just change the GUI? Basically I just want tethering and freeze bloat apps and ads, but a battery life boost would be great. How much does it change under the hood to expand capability? From what I can tell, root apps are the only thing that expands features.
Root and install a rom... If you think your phone is good, with a rom you'll see your phone is just great
Sorry for all my questions but is the kernel held within the ROM? And whatever ROM I choose, I can just flash to different just like that huh? Like it's an easy process?
My brother has Juggernaut, it didn't look any different than touchwiz except for flashy little things like the screen turn off and stuff. I just need function, not flash.
Some roms com with their own kernels, like TDJ's ones... You can flash a rom and then change it for another, but you have to wipe your data for a clean install (there's always the option to backup your info)
Questions go in the Q&A section

Stock for now, but another aftermarket ROM that I gave to my wife for her HTC Incredible is MIUI. Look for a previous build though (GB), the new ones are utter sh*t IMHO. I've had a lot of fun with MIUI back in the days of FroYo.
Stock rooted jb its great.
If she's a "below average" user.
Then stock JB.
If she wants to have fun with phone and is actually able to remember things about the phone, CM9/10
If she wants to get all complicated, then AOKP.

If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^
Bleh stock... I suppose that's not a bad option on aosp the words stock on her old phones are terrible because of touchwiz and Moto blur
Cm9 is pretty stable though i assume. Any bugs?
CM9 Skyrocket
Stock anything, rooted for AdAway but that's probably about it. I've had too many experiences with non-power users doing that angry thing people do when they don't comprehend technology.
MIUI. Simple, clean, extremely customizable.
My gf doesn't even want to try a new rom, she really seem to enjoy it.
BUT, and this is major point, my gf actually isn't that much into technology, so i assume she just wants the cutest and most user friendly experience.

I have a skyrocket and im using cm9 rc2 im sure she will be just fine with that but I was curious if anyone specifically likes anything other than cm, I have never used aokp and I hear there is a lot of custom features but I have also heard theres just too many?

Leave her stock. That way she can't blame you when something goes wrong. I mean, she will anyways, but don't give her an excuse. And forget about those other phones, stock Nexus is pure awesomeness.
Op I'm with everyone else. Stock, rooted with ad away installed. Therefore she will have no worries and you don't have to do explaining of ROMS, kernels, recoveries, etc.

I'd put CM10 nightlies on it and secretly flash updates every couple days. She deserves the latest n greatest!

More power to ya! I know hardly any women who even know what rooting is to begin with. The wife has watched me root more than 20 or so different phones I've run through for the last 3 yrs and STILL asks me questions when I explain it. I have been asked to root about 4 or 5 of hers on occasion though...thinking of pimpin out her S3 for her though.

It's not that girls can't use ROMs, its that he's talking about rooting and ROMing her phone when she has no idea what's going on. I'm all about girls being into hacking phones, but only if they do it themselves!
I don't condone rooting and ROMing someone else's phone unless they know what's going on and could do it themselves.
I guess I'd just leave it stock and make her a custom Fashion Barbie Nerdgirl of the Undead theme or something, for brownie points.

True. I recently passed my sgs2 on to my dad to use on tmo prepaid & I put that thing back to stock, rooted rom for him.
However, on aokp, I have no data drops, GPS issues, any problems etc... so I don't really see an issue with that.
