I've been testing some GPS fixes from around the forum. Some of them have helped, some have not. This gps.config file has helped me quite a bit. I live outside EL Paso and on stock EG30 could not ever get a lock. I tried several fixes until I put my head right and realized my EVO4G could get an awesome lock. So, I incorporated some of the data there into my E4GT and got great results. My setup is currently EL26 kernel/modem with EL13 uNnamed rom.
MUST BE ROOTED
To try this file unzip in home folder and:
Use Root Explorer (or whatever file manager you prefer) and navigate to system/etc. Mount as R/W and rename you current gps.conf to gps.conf.old.
If you use adb just push the new file from whatever directory it's in to system/etc. (should be ~/***, so the following command should work on Ubuntu. Sorry, no windows instructions because I don't use Windows)
adb push gps.conf system/etc
adb reboot
Alternate Installation:
Unzip file to your SD card. Rename gps.conf as before. Navigate to the SD card and copy the file to system/etc. Reboot.
Use GPS Test from the market to get an indication of any change. Leave feedback for me. I was able to go from one satellite in view to 8-9 while using most of them.
I did not write any of the script, just collected it from other places and got it to work for me. If you see any of your work here and want credit, let me know and I'll edit the OP. I know there's somebody but I don't remember who.
That worked amazingly 9 in view, 9 in use. Before I could only get 1 or 2 indoors.
Thanks.

Sleep does in fact kill GPS. I have to reboot in order to get it to work again...not all the time though
Just uploaded. I did so on windows using android commander btw. (if you care )
On stock i was viewing 1. To be honest thats the first time I ran a test on it, but I had noticed general GPS issues in the past.
I'm now showing 8 in view. I'll keep track of it over the week and post if anything changes.
I'll give it a shot since mine suffers from GPS issues after time.
not much improvement on my end.
i do connect faster when im outside. but no go while indoors. ill replace my phone before my trip at the end of jan
thanks for the replies. Please include modem/kernel/rom info if possible.
GPS is working great after script. I also installed the s GPS driver about a week ago from different phone and it seemed to make the most difference.
i retract my previous post. it takes a couple minutes to get a lock (8/9) indoors, but at least it gets a lock indoors. this **** is ridiculous. same thing happened when i had the samsung moment and intercept, and my friend's galaxy nexus. seems to only be a problem with samsung cdma phones.

+1 I am looking into the driver on my Galaxy Tab. It locks wicked fast all the time, but I don't know of the hardware is different. If you have a driver I can test, I would be very grateful. Send me a link to your source, or link the file.
Sorry forgot to post ROM.

I'm using stock rooted EL26 ROM....
This thing hardly ever locks indoors where as my Galaxy Tab 10.1 does with no problems.
These radios just don't transmit as good apparently.
Never had a problem with GPS on this phone. Download GPS Test from the market and then clear and re-download agps within the app. After that you will be golden.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356865
flash this it works like a charm. Wipe cache/dalvik
After updating to EL26 I am having fewer problems than with other versions. I checked the drivers mentioned here, even the fix mentioned by puch21, and they are indeed different. The driver files from EL26 are more thorough, there are a couple more files in the directory. The fix from puch21 is a driver from another Samsung device, but I don't know which one. Anyway, If anyone wants to stay with an older ROM I can provide downloads for the drivers, but I can't make flashable zips today. Maybe tomorrow. I use adb for almost everything, but I know not everyone does. I'll work on them as time permits. If I do make zips they will contain the best reported drivers, libs and gps.conf files. I suppose I will provide a stock setup in case anyone wants to revert.
This was the driver I was referring to.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321049
I've tried the supersonic driver, it didn't lock as well as the above driver.
Sorry for the late update!
Thanks for getting back. There are more than a few threads about GPS fix. With so many people working on it it will get fixed. I'm pretty impressed with the EL26 all stock setup right now. Seems to have been the best for me, but still there are conflicting reports. I have not been able to try EL29 yet...cheers!

I heared a lot of opinions saying that the GPS on eclair JM9 is very good, near perfect. As you know, we can't say that on JPO, WJPA and all froyo versions.
So, It's just seems obvious to me to ask - why Samsung went back with the GPS performance?
And is it possible to create a fix for the GPS for Froyo, based on the firmware from JM9' so the performance of the GPS on Froyo will significantly improve?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have asked from PilotX to create this kind of fix for me. Thanks to him (post#9) for creating a flashable zip via ClockworkMod recovery with JM9's GPS files inside.
http://www.multiupload.com/C90PAO39WX
***Using this is at your own risk but in no way will you generate the same result as some did. Although people have been reporting on better GPS after applying this "fix", it's still your own decision to make. A backup is recommended, as allways.***
Tutorial
Download the file and put it in your sdcard.
Go to ClockworkMod recovery, choose "Install from sdcard" and browse to that zip file, then flash it.
After that, download an application called "SGS Tools" from the market.
Run SGS Tools. Browse to Secret Codes > GPS Test and Settings > Delete GPS data.
Then try out your GPS, don't panic, as the first fix takes a bit.
opinions doesnt mean much unless they are backed up with some real data. you can browse the forum and find a lot of opinions about different gps fixes along the way.
few months have passed since first signs of trouble with gps, more then enough to find 100% fix.
My GPS Seems good enough when driving around with JPA...

That's why I have used the question mark icon. Still, I will change it.
mike, As many people here, I inquire the GPS subject for a long time. The information about JM9 is based not only on XDA users, but on people that I trust, Who have tried many firmwares and tested the GPS tens of hours. I would have tried it myself, but It will be a big problem for me to go back to eclair.
Is it even possible to create such a fix for Froyo? (based on eclair)
Yep, based on my experience no other ROM has matched Eclair JM8, when it comes to Google Navigation accuracy. I'm on JPO and the voice directions go hay-wire "turn left in 30 yards" nope, wait, "carry on straight and cross the junction" and it constantly puts me on the opposite traffic flow. But I wouldn't flash back to JM8 just cos of reliable satnav since I'd miss so much of the Froyo goodness
GPS navigation really depends on a lot of factors incuding hardware revision and physical location ( and probably luck )
I have 2 SGS's here and side by side the other one locks to 7 sats and its very accurate on a drive basis while the other one barely locks to 4 and takes over 5mins to even find 1.. both have the same firmware installed.

can some budy make short tut about the instaltion ?
I'm sorry, thought it was obvious :
1. install the file using clockworkmod, no need to rename.
2. clear the GPS data (using a program called "SGS tools", you can find it on market. enter :
secret codes--->GPS test and settings--->delete GPS data.
again, be patient for first time fix!
share your results, me and pilotx had big improvement.
What kind of improvement do you see? Faster GPS lock or better accuracy?

Hello guys, I have to ask you a question that I can not resolve for months.
I have a HTC TOUCH PRO, and every kernel I try to always have problems.
At first the device works well and is also very fast, but hopelessly after a while it stops. When you first start can last hours and then crash, but already the second hangs after a few seconds.
I've tried almost every kernel, even the "msm-htc-linux-20101204_005141-package.tar" by the comments that seems to be the best for my device, but nothing. I'm desperate and I do not know what to do.
Can you tell me how to solve this?
Waiting for reply.
Thanks to everyone that I will respond.
I'm not sure what your problem actually is. Sounds like the system_server bug... Make a call to voicemail, phone should speed back up.
Also, the newest kernel is 1253. The autobuild service has fallen behind GIT, see this thread to get the most up-to-date GIT commits.
i must only update with this kernel?

The kernel (zImage) goes hand-in-hand with the modules file.
Still not sure what you mean tho.
The problem is very simply. Any kernel I use the phone freezes.
This kernel (1253) is very very fast, but nothing, however, the phone freezes.

XDAndroid is far from 'stable'...
Us Touch Pro owners can't use 1253 due to certain things reported not working with this kernel. 1243 (i believe 124?) works fine.

O___o I did not realize that. All RAPH's...? Do we have logs? I need information man!
I'm not sure about all raph's per-say, but in the other normal FRX03 thread (within the past 4 pages i believe, if that) there was a user or two complaining about something not working (i wish i remembered, maybe data) not working, and i told them to revert back because of issues the new kernel(s) had, and he reported back "thanks, that fixed it." So SOMETHING is wrong for sure with Touch Pro's, but don't know for sure if it effect's diamond user's also. Sorry.
Update- Now i remember, it's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10590080&postcount=4072, the screen shifting problem. It shift's the screen over to the left by so many pixels, and get's shifted more and more as your using it. It was actually like 14-15 pages back (too much traffic, LOL), but since i use camera a lot, i am using 1214 (last recent one VC did) as i use his camera build, so i can take picture's. I did witness the screen shifting myself in my separate FRX03 build i have (since just use the camera build though solely). But was using 1241 i believe for my non-camera build.

Oh right, that. Screen shifting seems isolated to the RAPH800 and DIAM500. Probably RAPH500 as well, and I'm not sure what the other DIAM is... perhaps there is a DIAM800, not sure. Either way, seems to only be the CDMA devices.
But of course LOL. I personally love my Touch Pro, but WOULD love to upgrade if i had the money. But yeah, the dreaded shift problem til it's fixed. Not a BIG deal for now, since previous kernals will hold us off til that's fixed.

You still haven't properly elaborated on your actual problem. Vagueness will get you nowhere, except frustrate people.
I did not understand what you mean. I'm trying everything I was recommended and I can not solve this problem. I try to re-explain.
The problem is very simple: the phone, any kernel I mountains, after a couple of minutes it stops. I can not wait to give other details because the problem is just that.
Everything works (including wireless), the system is fast but is hopelessly blocked.
When you first start working for hours, just minutes after the second start.

Seems to be a pretty big language barrier here... "any kernel I mountains"...?
So has Android ever worked for you? What build(s) have you tried?

What about FRX03? I can't really help you with any build but that one - if you're using a different build, you'll need to get help in those threads. Generally if you just throw up a post like this, use FRX03 (or AOSP, whatever) as your base to test off of.
If it works in that build, but doesn't work in one of the others - then it's that build. If they fail in both builds, then it's a general issue with Android - or, you've just done something wrong .
I also think the same thing because no version I work, all give the same problem.
This is my steps:
1 - Extract all the package (eg superfroyo) to the root of SD, also replace the kernel (of course renaming the new kernel in "zKernel") and also the module, copying them always in the root.
2 - Put the file "startup.exe" HARETSTARTUP of the root and put the file "startup.exe" contained in INSTALL-NPKINSTALL in startups.
3 - Starting in the INSTALL file inside the folder NPKINSTALL.
4 - After the procedure I restart the phone and after i start the file "HARET".
At this point the system starts, it's fast and it all works perfectly but crashes for no reason without giving me the opportunity to do anything, I can only do a soft reset.
Kindly tell me if something wrong in the procedure.
Keep in mind, most neopeek variants require two partiations to be setup as primary (one FAT32 and one EXT2). You might find it a tad difficult in finding someone to help you troubleshoot your process unless you seek help from with-in the thread that you downloaded superfroyo or any other neopeek variants. It is rare to find but then again, you could just as easy try out FRX04 and post your feedback in that thread too. See THIS post for info on downloading the FRX04 update file but you will probably need to downoad THIS package first, then update the system.ext2, rootfs and kernel package after the fact. Stinebd has links for the rootfs in his sig.
n-Joie! (Enjoy)

Again, you're using funky version. As R^72 said, get help with those versions in that thread.
If you want help, at least try FRX03. You haven't even given it a shot. Then you can update to FRX04, and if that all works - then try something more complicated like a Neopeek build!
Ok, so I've searched on this and haven't been able to find anyone with the same problem. This is so annoying!
Phone specs:
HTC Evo, rooted
Cyanogen 7.0.3.1
PRL 01115
not sure what else you might need to diagnose this.
Around the time that Sprint released their stock gingerbread rom for the Evo, my GPS went on the fritz. All of a sudden, google maps would only get a fix maybe once every few minutes. Useless for navigation! Sometimes the GPS icon wouldn't even flash, like it wasn't even trying to get a fix, meanwhile, Maps is "waiting for location."
I tried the usual "fix" that you hear about, by flashing back to a sense rom and typing ##gpsclrx##, and then the MSL number when prompted. No success.
I finally figured out that if I go into recovery and clear the dalvik cache, and then run GPS Status after it reboots, the gps works again, but a few days later, I have to do that all over again.
Any idea what's causing this or how to fix it?
I get similar problems. I just started using Cyanogen when Sprint came out with their first Gingerbread update and broke everything. I love Cyanogen, and I have managed to get everything working except for the GPS.
A lot of times it takes a long time to turn on when I start up google maps, and then it will get a fix, and then after a minute it will loose the fix and won't be able to get gps lock again. I tried flashing back to a stock rom and doing the ##gpsclrx# thing, but it just clears the call screen and never even asks for a MSL number, so I don't know if that works or not. I love Cyanogen, but don't know if I can live without the GPS working.
Has anybody else figured anything out? Does anyone know if this is a know problem that is being worked on or not?
I get no fix on gps and no voice
a question for the OP since you dont make any mention of it.
Have you tried flashing the Galandy fix for GPS? Using the Vision GPS driver makes a world of difference.

Bumping this thread with a question: Will the Vision GPS driver (Galandy) work on a near-stock Sense ROM (GB)?
I'm running Jiminy, which is mostly a debloated stock ROM with a few changes made for ease of use on the Cricket network.
Currently my GPS is doing what the OP of this thread is describing- my current workaround is to do the following every single time I want to use nav:
1) Open GPS Status. Clear AGPS data. Download new AGPS data.
2) Open GPSFix. Hit "Start Fix", then hit the Map button.
3) Do my Navigation. It works fairly well after that.
This is an annoying procedure!!! I want to load the Vision driver but don't know if it will screw something up- it seems like most of the people running it are on CM7 or some other AOSP custom ROM.
Will it work with my setup?

In theory, they should work fine on Sense roms as well. However if your stock Sense GPS drivers are not working then the Vision drivers might not work either, but it doesn't hurt to try. Just backup your gps.supersonic.so file in /system/lib/hw/ folder before flashing the driver.

Oddly enough, my phone does not have that file. And installing it seems to do nothing
The closest thing I have is /system/lib/libgps.so
Being the daring sort, I renamed that file and replaced it with the a renamed copy of the Vision gps.supersonic.so; my phone did not like that at all- no boot, had to reflash

Hi guys
I have gps issue. In order for me to get gps work and locks, I have to turn wifi.
Now I have el29 rom but I tried it on ek02 and ics rom it was the samething.
On my htc evo whenever I turned gps on, it would be locked right away without turning wifi on.
Is it the problem that I only have or you have it too!
There are several threads about this already..

Idk if this helps... But many people lose gps when flashing an ics leaked rom.. I had it happen to me.. This is what I did to fix it, that worked.. I flashed a Gingerbread rom, got a lock, left gps on, then flashed back to an ics rom. This is the trick many are doing that works.
You can try getting a gps lock, leaving gps on, then flash another gingerbread rom. See if the problem is still there after you boot up....

Try attached file.
1. back up your existing file \system\etc\gps.conf
2. unzip and place the attached file to same location
3. reboot
4. check your GPS connection
5. if no changes, then you can place back the original file to same place
For me, GPS worked great but I'm using this modified gps.conf file for my phone.
My problem is I can get gps locked but I have to turn wifi on in order to get gps locked.
do you have this problem?
by the way Im on stock el29 rom

My friend honestly your issue is not isolated as well as the numerous amounts of threads you could possibly look in for answers. I understand to you the simple thing would be to just post a question but try to take the time to look around. Any question most of us have usually has been asked prior and answered.
I have listed a few links that may or may not help you but either way it is a starting point for you. Do some homework and do some testing... change kernels, change radios, try different roms, flash zip files, use GPS Status, try FastFix on the market... In other words before you post next time, talk to ya boy Google for some advice

If none of this helps then wipe all and reload rom since leaving wifi on should give you a better lock

Based on what you said, there are high chances that your phone is not getting the enough signal to search your location. The same thing happens whenever we try the speed test. this app try to find the closest server from my current location, but if the signal is week, then it fails. But once it detects the location thru wifi or GPS, it works fine.
In your case, I think your previous htc evo has some different gps.conf information. When you check it, there are several information regrading the GPS servers. So, if you want, you can extract the same file from your htc evo phone and inject to your new one. Again, I think it will work like a charm.
For my file attached before, it's up to you. If you do not find any other workaround, you can try it.
Since about January, all the CM7 based roms have had flaky GPS for me. Basically it loses the signal after about 5 minutes. A quick GPS on/off cycle usually fixes the problem. However, I really don't like the distraction
(and the danger) of messing with the gps when driving 70 mph.
I spent quite a bit of time searching for a solution on this and other forums, but found nothing helpful. Yesterday, I got the idea to try out one of the Sense GPS drivers in the AOSP roms. I extracted the attached file from one of the Stock roms and replaced the AOSP driver.
The good news is it appears to work. In the 4 times I've driven I didn't have to do any GPS cycling.
Steps:
1) Extract the attached gps.glacier.so.zip file.
2) Using Root Explorer or ES File Explorer (with the root option checked) copy the attached gps.glacier.so file into your system/lib/hw directory replacing the current file.
3) Reboot.
4) You may want to clear out the A-GPS state using the GPS status app, but I don't know if this is necessary or not.
or
1)Use clockworkmod to install the GPS_Fix.zip file.
Anyway, I hope this helps someone else. I am thinking of developing zip you can flash if there is interest in it. But in the meantime I wanted to post the fix, since I know there have been other people with the same problems I had.
I hope this helps!
EDIT-
I have also added the gps_update.zip that has the gps.conf file, the supl.root.cert and the gps.glacier.so all put together by tnpapadakos
testing now
have you tried the gps.conf by crypted? the gps lock is way quicker/better than the stock/aosp gps.conf file
just wondering if you tried it

No, I haven't tried it. My lock time hasn't been bad... I usually have a lock in the time it takes me to pull out of my garage. That being said, I am always tweaking things so I will definitely give it a try.

these work for glacier but are in other threads, you'll notice
in any case, this is the one to use if you wanna save yourself some reading
also, the guy's a fricking genius or something, open up the file in that zip and see what he's doing...he's hosting his own gps servers

The gps.conf by crypted file can be flashed in recovery. You can also just open up the zip and copy it using root explorer, etc.

somtimes I just add it to the rom before flashing, and you have to also add the SuplRootCert to system/etc, but if he comes up with an update in between roms, i just flash from recovery....

Don't forget to check the permissions on the file. I am not sure if it was because I backed up the old one first and copied in the new one after, but I had to change the permissions to rw-r--r--.
This, I learned the hard way. I always forget something...

definitely....i always check the permissions of the file i'm replacing and match that on a new file, or, if i'm inserting one thats not there, i look at the permissions of the surrounding similar files, and match it to those
otherwise, rw-r--r-- is usually the fallback
Yea I have noticed that the best GPS experience I have had was when the phone was completely stock the GPS worked great, locked on quickly, and never lost signal. After I flashed it and such the GPS has been a pain to get lock when I needed it the most.
I've found that any of the radios after the official Froyo version causes the GPS to fail after a few minutes as described by the OP. However, with some of the newer ROMS I've found that the newest radio doesn't completely lose the GPS signal but it does still seem to temporarily lose it but it then it comes back by itself (causes navigation to get stuck at a location for a minute or two every now and then).
I tried the driver and agps mod from this thread. At first it completely killed my GPS then someone posted about the required permission changes which fixed that. I haven't tried navigation so I can't say whether it prevents the temporary position loses, but it does seem to still be pretty slow to lock on and after it does lock on may take several minutes before the accuracy gets to a useful level.
I think I'm going to go back to the Froyo radio as that one seems to work the best for GPS and I'm not convinced it makes much of a difference for voice/data. Perhaps the Froyo radio with these mods would be the best?

I have noticed the "stuck position" before. I haven't paid attention to that with this mod before. I'll have to keep an eye out for it.
I have updated the OP to include a CWM flashable GPS_Fix.zip file. It worked for me, but if anyone wants to test it, I'd appreciate it.
The thing I am most curious about is if the file is copied with the correct permissions.
thanks.

I flashed the update and after that the GPS locked on pretty quick. I haven't tested for navigation yet.
here's one with the gps.conf file, the supl.root.cert and the gps.glacier.so all put together if anyone would like to test it
quick satellite fixes and continuous GPS lock
(hopefully)
It worked on MIUI... Thanks...Its been losing signal for the longest time and now it locked in and never lost it again...
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
