To install
rename your current build.prop in /system/ to build.prop.bak and copy this build.prop to /system/ and reboot.
Make sure the file permissions are rw-r--r-- or chmod 644
I recommend using root explorer. Below is the file permissions diagram if you use root explorer to change them.

All installers include a backup script as of 1-23-2012
If you have an error with the installer. Unplug your kindle wait a couple seconds and plug it back in. Make sure to eject and the sdcard from the computer and click disconnect on the kindle.

If you have any suggestions please share them with me so I can add them.
If you wanna buy me a drink for my time go Here.

I'm assuming this is for stock KF firmware?

Correct this tweak is for the stock firmware.

Will this allow the market to show more apps, right now with stock build prop a lot of apps are not available

Nope. This does nothing for the Market. I don't think anyone has been successful in getting the market hacks to work yet.

Permissions?
Are you sure about those permissions? Everything I'm reading is suggesting it should be :
rw-r--r--
Or
XX0
X00
X00

I'm pretty sure. 777 is what mine was pre-editing. I am running the build.prop I have available above and it is working fine for me. I think you may be referring to the default.prop which has the permissions you listed.

Is this compatible with CM7?

Okay, I may have been mistaken. I checked the permissions of my build.prop.bak and they were listed as I posted above so I figured it should be the same. Would permissions change from renaming a file?
Also, I haven't touched default.prop.

I have had problems with permissions changing when moving them to the computer but not sure I'd just renaming them would do it. Are you able to check your active build.prop?

I don't think you should use this with CM. If you want to post a link where I could download a copy of yours I will add the edits and make one for CM. Although I am sure some are already there.

Unfortunately I already replaced my build.prop with the one you posted. I have my permissions currently set to the same values as my .bak and have since rebooted with no issues. Should I be experiencing issues if my permissions are incorrect? Also, searching other forums (for other devices) and looking at the build.prop on my phone (Samsung vibrant) the permissions are rw-r--r--.

For anyone wanting to try this on CM7, don't do it because it doesn't work. In fact it turned the display 90* but still left the touch functions in the area they should be in, took me forever with playing with the buttons and a display that didn't match to get it fixed.

You are correct, rw-r--r-- are the proper permissions for build.prop

Has anyone tried incorporating any of the Amazon build.prop stuff into ones for CM7 to see if they could get the Kindle reader application to allow you to read magazines and other documents that you have set up in the documents of the reader software? I have a few magazines that I do like to read on my Fire and would hate to give them up by switching ROMs but if that was the ONLY thing I lost I would live.

Thanks working great here on stock kindle rom rooted. Seems a bit snappier after implementing said tweaks.

Thanks for the feedback I am going to test and change the post.

Weird, I am looking at the permissions on the build.prop listed above from CM7 and the permissions are 755.

Download Root Explorer and use that. Trust.

If that's the case, then it's a problem specific to the ROM. I haven't tried it on my TP2 but it worked flawlessly on my G1.
Lemme take a look once I get a second.

Because it does not excist in winmo. It only excists in android.
I tried Root Explorer and it workers . I use latest froyo build with lower incall volume kernel .
Can somebody tell me when I delete apps in system/apps folder I delete from data.img or from system.ext2 ?
Same here, I change my build.prop file or replace it and it gets overwritten.
Using the build.prop for protected apps but can't get it to stay.
I am using the latest BLAZEN build from PPCGEEKS/Reefer.
Being an Ext2 file instead of sqsh I figure this would have worked flawless.
I'd really like to download logmein, gbahours, paypal and a few other protected apps. I can't without fixing this build.prop file....

Glad to see I'm not the only one looking into this I have the same problem in my android OS - different phone, but same custom OS. Hopefully this thread won't die - if I ever figure it out I'll be sure to post here as well

[How To] Boot Sound

I had started a thread asking for help on how to do this. So since its pretty much confirmed it works on most phones even when you didnt realize it was installed Ifigured it was time to give it a proper [How-To].
Disclaimer:I am not responsible if you break, brick, hump, throw against wall or any other action you do to your phone. By using this script you agree anything that happens is your own noobtastic fault. Any attempts at blaming me for anything other than this being fantastic will result in you being pointed and laughed at.
If you are using BACKSIDE/IHO or have already installed the script dont I REPEAT DONT run the script again. Doing so makes multiple instances of the commands and will stop the bootsound from playing. If you run the script more than once you will have to delete somethings to get it to work. SO be warned DO NOT RUN THE SCRIPT IF YOU HAVE ALREADY OR ARE USING BACKSIDEIHO ROM
The ability to play boot sounds is not activated in CM7 based roms. You have to run a script that will enable this function on CM7 based roms. I remember somebody posting this a short while back but it wouldnt work for me. Apparently the sound file I was using was not named properly.
I found a tutorial on CMforums about how to do this. Tested it and everything works great. Several people have tried this on Froyo roms and not have it work. Also it appears on some phones it just wont work at all.
This is what you do.
1. Download this shell script here bootsnd.sh
2. Place it on the root of your SD card & then open Terminal & type the following
su
cd /sdcard
sh bootsnd.sh
3. Now by using a file manager program with R/W (Read/Write) go to the /system/bin in your phone & make sure the file has transfered over! It should say BOOTSOUND & have permissions set to rwxrwxrwx! for this I use Root Explorer or you can use File Manager once you have selected R/W
4. Before transferring your sound file over rename it on your pc, android_audio and make sure it is a .mp3 file. Transfer the sound file from your pc to the root of your SDcard. Now move your sound file you want to play when the phone boots to /system/media of your phone & rename it android_audio you will have to be in R/W mode! Typically fifteen seconds is plenty long and just perfect, however anything over 30 seconds will get cut off.
5. Reboot & enjoy your new BOOTSOUND B)
I dont take credit for this and I am just adding the info here, if you wanna give thanks make sure you go here as well & say thanks to Colpophage for his help on this topic - say thanks here

If your having trouble getting sounds to play this should fix the problem.
Here is how to fix it.
Make sure you are mounting in R/W mode on each of these steps.

Using a app like root explorer, goto /system/bin and delete the file bootsound.
Back out to /system now open build.prop in text editor mode, look for this text.
Code:
ro.config.play.bootsound=1
Delete it from the build.prop and save and exit.
This is optional but recommened.
Reboot phone.
Verify no sound is playing.
Now run the script again and reboot.
You should have a boot sound again.

if you're using a froyo rom, it's a simpler and different method to get the boot sound.
you need the .mp3 saved as
/system/sounds/poweron/PowerOn.mp3
that's all.
if it still doesn't work, try re-encoding the mp3, or use a different one. sometimes the system's picky about which mp3s it'll use for a bootsound.

If you are using a CM7 based ROM, here's a flashable zip file you can use:
Activate-Bootsound-signed.zip
Boot into recovery and flash after flashing any CM7 based ROM.
Note- If you have made changes to the files mentioned by eollie, you must remove your changes before flashing this.
Thanks Jerry. out of curiosity, is there a size or time limit for these boot sounds? i was thinking of adding the very opening of "Zoo Station" by U2.
I dunno about cm7, but I put a 40 second mp3 as the bootsound in froyo, and it played all the way past when the sd card mounted on the home screen.
The most I've been able to play is about 90 seconds, larger files didn't even play for me.

Remember some Rom cookers have supercharged the boot process. So the best thing to do is use a timer and time how long you have from the flash from the second bootanimation to when the phone does the soft vibirate to let you know its loaded.
is there any way to use a sound for when the phone powers off also
it is not working for me...i did nothing eollies thread and i only flash Activate_Bootsound-signed.zip this on that you have given, but steel boot sound is not working.I am currently on cm7 6.5.8.Please tell me what to do to enable boot sound???

Please remove the paid app from your post. It is against the rules. Plus there is a zip created by jerryscript that does this.
Another thing you edited the post for better wording yet instead of typing out into you abbreviated it. Also used the letter u instead of typing you. /faceplam Your post is horribly written using leet speak and text speak because you either cant spell or are too lazy to use proper words.

### Bootsound - Safe to Delete: End ###

Hi,
Tried all your suggestions.
Regenerated bootsound/edited init.local.rc/build.prop
But still no sound - using android_audio.mp3 - which is valid !!!
Was able change bootanimation.
Something I'm missing or just not possible in this rom ?
Thanks or any advise
I couldn't get the script to work for me either, but the manual method did work for me. The file I had was an ogg, so I edited that part of the bootsound file and the off plays.
Sorry, I don't know why yours doesn't work. Did you make sure your bootsound file has no extension?

Enhanced Camera.apk

Everyone seems to be asking for a silent camera app, also some desire one with better image/video capturing. There is one in existence however, most wouldn't know this (unless you use the 'search' function) because it's in the I9100 forum. Yes, it does work with our phone but I wanted something that was build from our source and that's up to date. I decided to take the best of both and combine them. This is the Camera.apk from Calkulin's 2.8.1 (EL29) ROM but with the edits from Potatoman's incorporated into it.
Check out Potatoman's thread to see the bitrates and sampling rates if you're curious. Instructions on how to put this in /system/app are in Patatoman's thread also. Let me know if for some reason they didn't work and I'll see what I can do. I've tested it on mine so I know it works I just haven't had a chance to test the sampling and bitrates.
Also, there's a media_profiles.xml that may or may not be useful. I use it anyway. That goes in /system/etc with no special permissions. Just give it the same as the stock one.
Lastly, in no way do I take credit for this. All I've done is combine work from two great devs - they did all the dirty work. If you'd like to thank or donate to someone then donate/thank one of them, or both
Cheers and enjoy.
EDIT: Figured I would add this here for those that aren't sure how to replace a /system file.
For a file explorer (eg. Root Explorer) make sure the system is mounted as r/w. Copy the app from your sdcard to the /system/app directory. Change permissions to rw-r-r. Reboot. I also set the owner and group to root but you shouldn't have to.
For terminal
Code:
su
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p9 /system
cp /sdcard/path/to/app /system/app
chmod 644 /system/app/Camera.apk
Reboot
Only if you have to should you just install it like a regular app. If you have to, just click on the app in your file explorer and select 'install'. This will install it to the /data/app directory. This should never have to be done though.
Just make sure you reboot

No not yet anyway. It just has the higher bitrate and sampling rate right now. I'm new to .dex edits so I'll keep updating it as I learn more. I know there's a power button mod for it but from what I've read its still buggy.

You'll need a file explorer app like Root Explorer. You can also use a terminal emulator app. With the file explorer you copy the app from your sdcard to the /system/app directory. Make sure sure the system is mounted in r/w also. That will overwrite the original, now all you have to do is set permissions which are rw-r-r.
Just to be safe, reboot. If you had a shortcut for it on your homescreen you'll have to put it back there.
For terminal
Code:
su
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p9 /system
cp /sdcard/path/to/app /system/app
chmod 644 /system/app/Camera.apk

No,u need to put apk in /system/app folder but you need to be rooted to put apk's in that folder.

[Q] Turn off camera shutter sound

I love this phone.
But, I can't turn the camera shutter sound off.
I have seen the following solutions:
Edit build.prop and set the camera sound value to =0
or
Use Camera Zoom Fx app and delete the camera_click.ogg file
I would prefer to do the former.
I guess I need to root my phone to do this - or is there an easier way?
I have never rooted a phone and I don't have a need for a rooted phone other than to be able to r/w the build.prop file.
Can I root it, edit the build.prop file, and then unroot it and have the build.prop file keep my edits?
Does anyone have any straightforward steps on how to root and then unroot this phone?
Thank you for any guidance you can provide!

I believe that you can unroot directly from the superuser app that is sideloaded via this rooting method. Once unrooted, the changes that you made should remain. If they don't for some reason, all you have to do is keep root and just deny apps that request superuser access.

You would need to root it to edit the build.prop, as it is located in system. That other way to unroot might work to keep it but if you use lgnpst it would replace all the system files, giving you your stock build.prop again. If you wanted to delete the ogg file you would still need to root for that. At least on my phone the camera_click.ogg file is located it /system/media/audio/ui directory. You could just move it somewhere else as a backup. But....being rooted is awesome

I think (once rooted) is safest to just overwrite the click sound(s) with a silent one. Then it plays but you can't hear it. works for me and any camera proggy that defaults to the system will use it too.

On the LGoG it's in: system > media > audio > ui > camera_click.ogg
It may be in a different location on other devices.
You have to be rooted in order to write over system files, but I just renamed the original to camera_click.ogg.bak and then copied the silent version in with the same original name "camera_click.ogg" less the quotes and making sure it's an ogg file too, so there is no system playback error.
Hope that helps.

You'll also want to verify it was overwritten. I'd try playing the sound once you do... just to be sure it's the write file.
Otherwise, you might search your device for the sound and see if it's listed elsewhere.
In case the program you are using does not have "system" write capability, I might suggest ES File Explorer.
Either way, you will have to access the settings to turn on the ability to "write" to root in order to "overwrite the file".
Additionally (if the file is changing back - or so it would seem)... be sure to check the permissions it has before you overwrite it and when you do (assuming success).. make sure to set the "new" files permissions to the same as what the old file had. Else, the OS might overwrite the "new" file with a tared (backed up) version... knowing that it's been screwed with.
It's kind of a form of protection from corruption (computer sees potentially bad file and replaces it with good file.)
Good luck and happy fourth!
Phantom camera_click.ogg
I beg your forgiveness for my ignorance, but I've never done much tweaking to file systems after a rooting... but my gf has the Sprint Optimus G and can't find the camera_click.ogg file at all using Astro File Explorer. Does anyone know any other location it may be at? As a computer technician, I'm embarrassed at my lack of know-how around the Droid OS!
Not sure if you looked at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2051384
Read the op then go to page 11 and you see there are 2 fields that need to be changed.
After you do that and reboot as it states, you will have sound when you have your volume on and no camera sound when you turn the volume down to vibrate or silent. At least that is how it is for me. I prefer it that way.
Hope this helps

Naturally
Per Murphy's law, after she and I both looked for around 30 min before giving up and me posting on the forums, I downloaded the ES file explorer and found both files within seconds.
Got it with the silent camera while the phone is on silent/vibrate. Now for a little tweaking to silence it with the volume up.
Thanks for your help, guys and gals. No wonder XDA-devs is one of, if not the, top-notch sites!

[Q] Unable to edit build.prop

So I have successfully rooted my wife's TMobile D851, which was verified using joeyk root checker app from the playstore, but I am unable to edit the build.prop so I can hide the nav bar and install lmt launcher for pie control. Am I missing something? I have no issue with my Nexus 5 or any other phone I've tinkered with and I am drawing a blank on what the issue is.
I'm hoping it's something super obvious that I missed and I'll feel stupid after I'm told what I am doing wrong.

I had thought about that so before I made this post I did a adb pull /system/build.prop and edited it with notepad++, as you suggested, but then I am unable to actually push it back. Can I just put it into a folder on my phone and then use some root file browser like ES or whatever and set permissions that way?

Your description of the permissions is a little weird but I think I can figure it out. I imagine it's the same permissions the current build.prop has? My wife has now taken her phone and gone to bed so I will have to try this tomorrow. Thank you very much for your assistance!
