Wanted to get a discussion going over a much debated and discussed topic....flashing ICS roms with ICS kernels. I want to know the forums specific attempts so we can better understand user errors versus software errors versus hardware errors.
I bring this up as I went from el29 to fc07 a while back and have been on ICS since. I am now on FC22 courtesy of agat63, which I flashed over calks fc18 v2 from. Before that I went from stock rooted fc15 to calks. This was all done using either rogue recovery fc07 or rogue recovery fc22 and using calks format all zip or modified format all zip.
Does it seem this was all "lucky"? I have a feeling many of these brick issues are due to people trying to flash between an AOSP type rom to another and/or using ROM Manager to do so. So lets hear it . . .

The bricking is related to (I think) data partitioning in the ics cwm recovery. If you wipe anything, something is most likely going to go wrong.

That's what I'm trying to boil down to....I have done bith wipes and zip formats, yet no issues....some methods or ROMS are leading into this so I'm hoping the brickers out there can give some feedback on exactly what was flashed and on what ROM, along with some success stories to try to figure out the issue.

Someone said once the source is released the risks should be minimal.
Also true....but with all the leaks going around and flashaholics it'd be good to have some guidelines til then, other than speculation. "I believe in science."

In addition,
CM9/AOSP/AOKP seem to increase brick chances.
CMW Touch espicially with ROM Manager is espicially dangerous and should not be touched.

This is what I hear the most. Has anyone else had success with flashing stock ROMs via clockwork on a stock(ish) ICS ROM? By this I mean based off fc07/15/18/22 (calk/agat63/goodness) and not CM9/AOKP/etc...

I am running FB15 on CM9 and have had a pretty good experience with it. Has anyone moved to the latest radio, FC09 (i think it is still the latest)???? Did it make a difference? Is it worth changing over to it?
haven't seen any difference in Daytona area. I really don't think they are doing any modem work since EI22.

I have to say I believe fc09 appears more consistant on day 2 of testing! 4g and 3g are more consistant on speeds and much less fluctuation than fb15

I no longer have Sprint service but, instead, uses it on WIFI. I noticed battery life under use is better with FC09, GPS is back to being more accurate and the automatic brightness is finally more consistent, whereas, before it used to fluctuate.

It sounds like he has the whole update, not just the modem.
FC09 gave my data speeds a little boost and more consistency as well as made my WiFi speeds jump up a whole 10 Mbps. Very worth the tedious task of collecting files, odining back to EL30, then using the CWM 5.0.2.7 zip to flash the FC09 delta file, even with a 20% chance of possible corruption that would cause me to start the entire process over again.
I'm on FB15 and have been since it leaked....seems like the whole community skipped over it and jumped directly to FC09 tho might jump ship myself soon enough but as of late I've had great 3G speeds and download speeds (could be the 3G Turbo tweak tho) and I never use wifi so.

ok, i asked this question originally to see if there was a definite answer. seems to be half and half. however, being that i am on cm9 with fb15, what is the easiest way to install fc09? should i boot in to stock rom from my sddisk and install fc09, or can i just odin the modem directly to the phone while on cm9? i tried to odin it a while back and screwed the entire phone up and had to start all over.
Just Odin the modem directly.

when you odin just the modem it should be a modem.bin in the phone section of odin I believe. someone else can chime in but for sure. but I had the same problem with the modem.tar for fc09. but if you have to start over just flash the official fc09 or fc19 tar then root and boot.

This is a thread to discuss the FG20 build for the Boost Mobile version for our phone.
As to my knowledge there are no issues running it on our Epic 4G Touch without of course a simple APN fix to get MMS.
What we've noticed is that its a more polished version of FF18 and what we should have essentially gotten for our phone.
I would like to know your experiences on FG20 and how it's running for you.
And note any bugs you notice please!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Everything seems fine, some (but fewer than FF18) apps FC on me. The multitask bug is still there, I haven't tested if the exchange bug is still there. Battery life seems a bit sketchy, but better than FF18's. This is near 92-95% percent of what our ICS update should have been in the first place.

I not sure to try the full ROM because I only flash the modem and can't even make a good call 95% of calls drop on me and the people I tell to call me they all went directly to my Voice mail.
Maybe I should try full ROM but dunno.
Edit: I just notice a few hours ago service get a Lil better, I will try again maybe was Sprint Service problems.

I've been on the fg20 modem for a few days now and not had any problem, I've have no 4g in my area and spotty 3g... my 3g speeds have been more or less the same as they were on ff11, but the consistancy and stability of the connection has improved and this has helped my battery life, not that I had an issue with my battery life... voice calls have been good and I've not noticed any change from what I experanced on ff11, which prior to this was the modem I got best results with

Hello, I tried the FG20 rom and noticed that there was no Roaming option in the settings, so I did a quick search for Boost mobile roaming and found that BST doesn't allow roaming. So for now, it's back to the somewhat unreliable (WiFi) FF18

I'm not sure what you're questioning, but I'll try to be more specific. After trying the FG20 ROM/Modem and realizing that it had no roaming option, I first reverted to a backup of FF18 ROM, keeping the FG20 Modem. But FF18 has an annoying WiFi issue where it often disconnects while in sleep mode. So I then restored old reliable a.k.a Blazer 4.1 ROM which doesn't have any issues whatsoever, or at least any that bothered me. The modem itself, whether EL29, FF18 or FG20, all performed about the same regardless of ROM type, so as of yet, there is no reason to go back to an earlier version than FG20.
Bottom line, when I mentioned WiFi issues, they had nothing to do with modems..... I think.
I am still trying to figure out what makes these builds so different.

I'm running this but I'm also on boost. Find it to be an improvement over the last few ics leaks. Using agat's latest release 4 which I loaded thru Odin since mobile Odin doesn't recognize the device anymore. All in all pretty smooth with good battery.

Hey guys,
After two years of use, I finally managed to shatter the screen on my HTC EVO 4G. Now that I'm due for an upgrade, I'm going with Epic Touch 4G as LTE network won't be in my area for another year.
I've been browsing the forums and after lots of reading, my head is spinning.
There's all these acronyms.. like FF18 I don't understand.
I'm getting a brand new Samsung SII Epic Touch 4G tomorrow from a Sprint Store.
I plan on using some form of Cyanogenmod if available.
There are TONS of root threads that I've found - Where do I start? Which one should I go with?
Sorry if it's noobie questions, but I appreciate any answers. Thanks!
Read the stickies sections in the forums. Ff18 is a ice cream sandwich build, its just the build date. F=2012 f=June 13th. Fh13= 2012 August 13th etc. Qbking77 has helpful videos on YouTube. Just read in the forums a lot and read the stickies section and you will pick it up. Enjoy the phone. It depends on what build you are on to root. Sfhub has one clicks for every build I think.

No rom will require a modem to be flashed. As modems are sepreate from the roms. Only time you will flash a rom/kernel/modem all in one is the one click .tar odin. You can flash modems independently.

Hey guys, thanks so much for all the help.
I have successfully rooted my Epic 4G Touch and flashed CM9 Alpha 6 on it.
Thanks SO much to QBKing77 for his very intuitive and simple videos.
My next question involves CM9 and Wireless Hotspot
I noticed that whenever I activate Hotspot, my 4G disconnects and falls back to 3G.
I have searched on Google and saw that this is a relatively common problem, but is there a fix? If not, are there any other AOSP ICS-based ROMs I could use that have portable wifi hotspot available with 4G?
Thanks again guys.

hi all,
I didnt find any threads that answered my question well, so if its a repeat my apologies. I am running Blu Kuban 1.0.5.4, it runs nice and smooth, i love everything about it, but i dont know JACK about modems in this sense. In about phone it says my modem is FF18, which seems right from everything i HAVE read lol, but then the BK build # say FL24.
i have read that GB and ICS modems are interchangeable, but i have no knowledge of where to start or IF i should bother messing with it. i know i have to travel to downtown orlando to catch a 4g signal, and 3g kinda sux and i get almost nothing inside my apt, and wifi is alot lower than i expected given i run a full dual-band DDWRT gigabit cat6 network.
so the crux of the question is the modem in the build number what it seems like? are the 2 conflicting or am i just misunderstanding al together lol and more, is there a better setup i can use, i know that tends to be phone specific but it seems like in general some prove to work well together and some dont.
thanks in advance for any/all help

FF18 is fine to run in BK FL24. Both are ICS. However, modems vary from phone to phone, location to location. I would try updating your modem to FL24, and after you reboot, update prl and profile, and see if that improves signal. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. But the short answer is no, the build is not conflicting with your modem, it's most likely the area you are in. Play around with other modems, see if it helps! Good luck

Not sure if you know but mobile Odin does not support the flashing of modems for the epic touch. It may look like it flashes but nothing happens. Either desktop Odin or recovery is the only way to flash a modem.

wow..no i didnt know that, some of the other boards hinted at it working through mobile odin and some said nothing at all, a friend however said it could so i took his advice...its possible he had the same thing where it looked like it flashed but didnt...it would explain the probs i had with the other modems lol

Read RWilco's comment in tutorial for flashing TAR and TAR.MD5 files, and it is a blanket statement regarding modems and Mobile Odin/Mobile Odin Pro (don't do it).

I don't believe this applies to GB and ICS modems. Let me check SXTP for confirmation.

I don't chance it flashing any modems. Everything else, sure. Modems, I use CWM exclusively.

with that in mind i will try using only cwm, and see if that makes a difference...thanks all for the help and the quick responses you guys all rock! im not a complete noob with flashing and such, but im not a pro either, i spent alot of time in IT and helpdesk, but now im back in school for programming, still only kinda towards the end of what would probably still be considered an apprentice level code monkey and while i some experience with linux/unix, in that realm i WOULD call myself a noob lol
ok so...i guess i have one more question, im running Blu Kuban, which uses a modified AGAT recovery...is it ok to flash a modem from that or should i just stick with desktop odin?

It's ok to flash from that. If it doesn't take, then try pc Odin. But like I said, I use CWM exclusively for modems.

Thank you for keeping us posted on your progress. Sprint/Boost/Virgin Mobile should just link to this forum in their communities for all tech support issues. It's faster, better info, and way friendlier. And wow it beats the heck out of going into their stores. I remember when Garwynn would post in the Sprint forum for the E4GT, and his input was far better than the Sprint monitors.
