i'll do somthing in the UI to make a sound .. like a touch tone.. then in a few seconds i'll hear a pop from the rear speaker

Exactly have the same problem. I didn't notice the hiss though, but definitely heard the pops. But yes when I listen closely I with my ear to speaker I hear exactly what you described: a hiss ending in a pop.

On my other phone (samsung epic 4g touch), it does the hiss/pop/silence thing too, but the pop is much much quieter that I can only hear it if I put my ear right next to the speaker.
However on this galaxy nexus it is loud enough that I can hear it from 1-3 feet-ish. Its especially noticeable in quiet areas.
I'm considering return it because of this

For me it's not a big problem. I notice it but it is not annoying me. I hear it only when I'm concentrating on it. BTW just applied the new update and that didn't fix this issue.

Me, too, I just checked all electronical devices I have and they all have it. Though, it's so quiet, that I have to get closer to the speaker than I normally ever woult.
Is that different for the GN? Is it louder than "normal"?

my GN is defiantly louder than normal. I can hear it easily from almost any normal usage distance. It almost sounds exactly like the normal touch sounds so that I get confused and think I clicked on something

Mine does it too. Simplest solution I've found is to turn off touch sounds. That way the speaker doesn't keep turning on and off so often. I would normally turn those sounds off anyway because they are annoying, so it's no biggie for me.
Only time I have noticed a speaker pop is going into recovery

yeah, i thought i was going crazy last night too, but i definitely have the same popping problem
its not very loud , but its there - i heard it when i was in my room cause it was dead silent. Whenever i played any type of sound file, you'd hear the little pop afterwards from the speaker =/

Yes, I certainly also get this, my hearing is very sensitive, so something like this is very noticeable for me.
Even "turn off touch sounds" doesn't seem to stop it.

I would guess it's just something as simple as properly muting the output to the speaker before turning it off. This should prevent the voltage spike from affecting the speaker.
Its not unique to the Nexus - it can potentially happen to anything with a speaker that isn't muted before turning off the amp.

So I noticed a small issue with my nexus.
When I am in a Phone Call, the earpiece kind of distorts the voices. It is hard to explain, but it is kind of like a robotic echo voice...
The situation returns to normal if I lower the Volume to about 40%.
The voice over the earphones or the external rear loudspeaker are fine though...
So, based on this, is it a defective earpiece, or a software problem that can be solved with an upgrade to radio/baseband?
Anyone else had this issue?

I too am having an issue with the volume and quality of sound coming from the ear piece. I can barely hear anyone and if there is any kind of ambient noise around forget it. From what I've gathered it is a bug in JB or 4.1. There are a few fixes floating around to increase the overall system volume, but they seem to fall short when it comes to the in call ear piece volume.
I have tried build prop edits with no luck.
What version of Android are you using 4.0 or 4.1?
I am going back to 4.0 Cyanogen Mod 9 to be exact and will see if this fixes it, if not this phone is going to have a date with a Big hammer.
Maybe some of the folks on here will chime in and offer some help or suggestions?

I am running the stock 4.1.1.
My problem is not the volume. I have to lower the volume to be able to have a good quality output.
If I increase the volume, the sound increases, but the voice on the other side becomes distorted un a robotic maner.
It is har do explain.

Wow I wish mine was loud, I may go by the Sprint store and play with their demo phone.
If it sounds like the person is speaking through a kazoo, you have a bad ear piece. Had same issue on first gen sgs.

So I finally broke down and called a guy I knew that worked at the Sprint store he said to bring it in. I asked if it was cool that it was rooted and he said no prob, they placed a test call and said and the tech said," you have a bad speaker come back in a few hours and it will be fixed."
You do not know how many hours I spent looking up fixes,flashing this trying different kernels blah, blah, blah.
Take it in and have them look at it, just be cool with them and don't try to BS them. Hope this helps a little.

I have noticed that the bottom speaker on my Z5 premium is quieter than the top one. I have tried using landscape, the left/top speaker is always louder.
When starting speaker phone, which produces audio out of the bottom speaker, it is louder briefly before returning to a lower volume. I also notice this when starting music after the phone has been quiet for a while. The bottom speaker starts of loud then it sounds as though it fades to a lower level.
A method to reproduce the bug: Enter the service menu by entering *#*#7378423#*#* into the dialer, selecting "Service tests" and then the "Stereo speaker Right" test. You may find that it begins louder then fades quieter soon after the test begins. If not, play the "Earphone" test and then repeat the Stereo speaker Right test, and you should find that it begins louder than before, before fading quieter as soon as the test begins playing
Anyone else?
EDIT: a more foolproof method, start playing music in Google Play Music or your music player of choice, go into the above service menu and play the earphone test. As soon as the earphone test finishes and your music resumes, it'll be clearly louder in both speakers before the bottom/right speaker fades quieter again.
Hopefully sony fix this quickly!

Mine is fine this morning! Coming out of both speakers as it should! Weird. Literally just charged it overnight and tried again this morning after my Timely Alarm went off

We had a post about this when the Z5 came out. I and a few others had the same problem and it rectified itself over night.
Mine has been fine for ages, I've just flashed new generic software for the UK and the problem is back again. I'm hoping it will sort itself out like it did last time. Its definitely software and not hardware related
Under audio settings enable Dynamic Normalizer ,that fixed the issue for me.

After reading your comment and a few others I am very concerned now about my Z5P, It is being delivered tomorrow and I would have thought that with such a big battery running in 1080p most of the time the battery life should be great. Also heat issues sound concerning aswell as the speaker issue
All phones for me are hopeless this year

Don't worry, your Z5P will kick ass...the heat issues are probably least of a concern with this phone compared to other 810 phones...and quite honestly, you should WANT the phone to run in 1080p outside of viewing pictures and videos... There is absolutely nothing to be gained by having 4k on all the time...but if that is something you want, it can easily be achieved by changing the DPI...no root or bootloader unlock is required... Being a Nexus 6P owner, I can honestly say the Sony is still better even running 5.1.1

Yea the battery is a little better today, but still not ideal for its size. On a bright note although it's a heat sink the performance is OUTSTANDING!!! no matter how hot it gets, I haven't noticed any decrease in performance. I also haven't noticed the "over heat" process running in the background yet. This was a common site on my z ultra!

Thanks I am not concerned about 4K infact thats not even the reason why I am getting this, I wanted a bigger screen than the z5 and bigger battery. I am glad its 1080p most of the time. that is a good thing infact I wish it was just 1080p.
My concerns are the battery life as if its running 1080p the battery life should be great ith a 3430 mah cell

See that still not ideal for its size is concerning tbh.
So I don't have a speaker issue as such but the speakers on this phone are not very loud and tbh, I am tired of this whole stereo speaker stuff I don't buy into it, before anyone mentions that the phone is water proof/resistant. I don't buy it on HTCs or the Nexus 6P either. Imo the bottom mounted single speaker on my GS6 and IP6S sound better, fuller & louder.

I know that this is an old thread but that's what the search feature is for.
This fixed my louder top speaker issue and has had the added bonus of increasing the volume of YouTube too. Thank you.
SOLVED!!
I have solved it
First step, empty the media volume bar, then restart your phone
Second step, turn your phone on, and play music with no volume, then increase it gently.
Voila!! Your bottom speaker now has equal volume with top speaker

Does your speaker work fine now? I had mine stopped working and got a replacement from the company. But after 40 days the problem is back again. There is a 7db difference in the loudness of both the speakers. My original phone used to do the same. Loud for a moment but then quite at the end. But gradually the bottom speaker lost all of its sounds and I wasn't able to use the loudspeaker feature while calling and the company swapped it for me, probably with a refurbished model. Respond to me and help me out or I'll be damned after the warranty period expires.

I'm on the new android 1.4 update with speaker support. When I make a phone call, I either get really low volume on the speaker (have to put my to my ears to listen) or the speaker has decent volume and distorts (like when you play loud music on tiny speakers). I'm wondering for those with the new update if that's normal or there might be an issue with my watch

Unfortunately, I think it's an issue with your watch. The speaker is actually pretty loud, you can easily hear the voice from 2 meters away. The sound itself is also pretty clear, of course bass performance is reduced, but the speaker is suitable for phone calls.

Thanks for your reply. Is your watch the same volume all the time if you don't adjust the volume. My watch works fine at times and then for no reason you can barely hear anything and have to put the watch upto your ear. Also do you get any distortion at all on phone calls i.e. squeaky or mumbling voice

Yes, my watch keeps the volume at the same level as long as I do not change it manually. There is also no distortion on phone calls.

No afraid not. Have contacted Huawei support today in the UK and they have escalated it to head office and will let me know what happens next. Will update the thread when I hear something back

Zenwatch 2 have the same problem... So i think that the problem it's on android 6.0.1... The volume in call it's very low and if you use in a car, it's difficoult to hear!Also the speaker as you said distorts the sound !!! This , however, does not happen by listening to the music ! if you use google play the sound is higher than the call! but high- volume music have a scratch
Ensure that the speaker port is clear. It can become blocked and the result is distorted sound.
Update
Update, after contacting Huawei support. They sent me a prepaid envelope to ship my watch to a third party repair centre SBE Ltd. I sent it off on Thursday and they received it next day Friday. This morning I received a brand new replacement sealed box. I have tested this one out and there is no issues with it. Sound is clear with no distortion.
Seems I'm having the same problem, hardly use the speaker, don't even play it loud when I do and out of the blue the speaker is distorted. Sigh
I have the same issue now with my replacement Huawei watch. Very annoying. It's completely unpredictable when it distorts as sometimes it's fine and other times its distorted. It sounds like someone trying to speak through their nose. Very distorted.
The only thing I can think of is the place I work at is quite dusty as I do warehouse work so maybe the speaker has dust inside

that sucks to hear... spoke to support and after factory resetting I still have distortion... seems im gonna have to request a replacement, hopefully no more problems

I can't get a recording as I've sent the watch back to the service Centre. The distortion when it occurs is so obvious that you can tell it's a defect with the speaker as even half volume is distorted.

I contact Huawei and they said there is no way to change the volume of the phone call. Maybe it is a bug! I don't know if I should try to get a replacement or just wait it out for a new update to fix the issue. Anyone found a solution??

Post no 7 mentions a similar issue with the Asus zenwatch 2 as what you describe. So check that thread as well. I can't help much as my issue was constant whether it was listening to music or during a phone call.
Also I know if you get water in the speaker opening then the sound will temporarily go quiet but once it's dried then it will return back to normal.

When You are in a call - incoming - there is options on the call screen swiping up. There is Volume and others (dialer, mute, etc...). Try it!
Same problem here. The sound is so low, almost mute and crunchy. I'll contact to huawei for a replacement.
That normally happens when water has gotten in the speaker. I would wait till it's dried out and check again.
Even though the watch is water resistant there is a sort of chamber after the speaker grille that water will sit in before it's evaporated. It happens to me often when washing my hands.

My bottom speaker is emitting an awful, high pitched noise. Sounds exactly like a dog whistle if I put it up to my ear. It happens when the screen is on, goes away immediately when the screen is off. It's mostly the bottom speaker, but I can hear it a bit off the earpiece too.
Someone else please test this, set your brightness to minimum, hold the bottom speaker up to your ear. Then set max brightness and see if it goes away.
Reboot did not fix it. May try a factory reset today.

I can replicate this on my Verizon HTC 10. The high pitched noise isn't loud or anything, but if I'm listening for it I can hear it if I put my ear to it (both bottom and top speakers.) The noise seems to go away when I make a phone call. I really don't consider this to be an issue... it's not noticeable unless I'm specifically trying to listen for it and put my ear up to the speaker, and only when it's at low brightness. /shrug

Yeah I'm torn on whether or not it's a problem for me. Right now it's driving me literally crazy lol. Whenever I'm in a quiet room, and brightness is below 30%, I hear it faintly, then I hold it up to my ear and it's a high pitched dog whistle making my brain bleed. It's making my ears ring even when not on my phone. I currently obsessing over it lol.
I'd like figure out whether or not this is present on all devices though.

Understandable. You can count me in the "Yes" column. I believe this has something to do with the LCD though, possibly with the refresh rate or something? Not 100% sure, but if you google search "high pitched noise from speaker when at low brightness" there are quite a few posts about people having this issue with LCD's in particular, even some older Nexus devices. I'm also interested to see if others have this issue, but my guess is all HTC 10's will do this...
Don't have this problem I'd say your units are defective.

US unlocked and can't reproduce this issue.

I can't reproduce this on my unlocked US model either or at least I can't hear it. How high pitched are we talking? I can usually easily hear tones up to around 19 kHz.
Edit: So mine does make a quiet tone with the brightness between about 5-10%. I can't hear it unless I hold the bottom speaker right up to my ear so this is a non-issue for me.
It's probably the pwm for the backlight that causes this.
Just to clarify, to me this sound is difficult to hear, not loud at all and it's not a consistent noise when the brightness is low. Make sure the phone is on about 5-15% brightness and hold your ear to the bottom speaker. It's a very high pitched sound. I believe the sound is coming from the LCD, I doubt our units are defective, but it's possible I guess...

He described it pretty well. It's a squealing, I can hear it holding the phone about 15 inches away, faintly. It's the pitch of the sound that's irritating, very high.
If you guys know what panel (tianma / sharp) your device has, could you post that as well.

Looks like there was an issue with it on the 2015 Pixel too.
Google's Response:
"After having one of our techs look into this, we found that this is the normal operating sound for the screen at that brightness because of the high density of pixels in the screen. However, it is such a high-pitched sound most people can't hear it which is probably why other owners say that theirs don't make that sound either."

Seems it's such a high frequency that not everyone can hear it... I'll bet it's the exact same situation here.
Well I just summoned another HTC 10. I had ordered two and cancelled one but they shipped it anyway so I refused delivery. Just went to my local FedEx facility and picked it up.
So I'll test that one out shortly.
most people can not hear that frequency... its the same sound older crt tvs emit... i would be able to walk into the living room and know the tv was on before i stepped in....
im betting they all do this... not everyone can hear it....

Agree completely... I was always one of those who could hear that frequency on those old CRTs too I'll just live with it, it's not a big inconvenience to me. The only time I'll have my face close enough to hear it will be when making calls, and it doesn't make that sound when calling

Well I'm starting to believe your right, it's on all devices.
The new one that I just opened has the same thing.
I'm not sure how people aren't hearing it. All it takes is a quiet room and it's such a piercing ring. I can literally hold it 12 inches from my face, and move it from side to side and hear the sound moving with the phone.
I've noticed a few things that cause it:
- the brightness is below 30%. 30-40 it's unnoticeable but still there if you hold the screen up to your ear. Above 50 it's gone.
- the background of the screen affects the pitch. The darker the background the louder and higher the pitch is.
I can live with it through the day. When I use my phone before going to bed, or just waking up I usually use my phone at 0% brightness. It's extremely noticeable even a good distance from my face at that point.

I don't have any noise from mine. Unlocked variant. But I tested AFTER I took the OTA that dropped today. Maybe it's fixed? I have the tianma screen
