I know I can use the front facing camera to take a self portrait but the picture quality is not very great. Is there anyway I could make the power button double as the physical camera button with having the phone got into power down mode. I search the forum and yet to find decent alternative

if you look again in development there is an aio mod that makes the volume rocker the button. and you zoom in by pinch.
This camera mod works: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1284486
I have to be rooted I assume

UnNamed ROM that I'm using lets you use the volume rocker. Lots of other great features, I'd highly recommend it.

I'm going have to check that out. Just got this phone the other day so I'm just root and leave roms alone for a min. I am going install that mod

Are you saying that CM already does this, or they will incorporate this feature? To my knowledge this is a brand new feature introduced with this modded kernel.
Though I use a N1 which has a trackball, this would still be pretty sweet.
I'm assuming this feature is very much possible, but it would be a battery hog since the sensors would have to be on at all times versus only coming on once you wake the phone with the power button.

Yeh I can see where the battery life comes into play.
But hey it could be an option, say for someone who's power button is broken (N1 users know what I mean by this).

I was an N1 user so I know exactly what you mean. The other option that Team Kang offers is VOLUME ROCKER wake. You can use the Volume Rockers to wake the phone.

Forgive me if there's an easy answer to this that I missed, but has anyone modded the camera app to use the volume rocker for shutter a la iphone? Definitely my biggest frustration moving from the OG epic. Glad that it's my only hangup. Searched every forum and didn't see anything.

What a coincidence, look who it is...lol. I know its baked into gtg's NoName ROM. It has volume up to snap pics and if you hold it then it focuses and takes pic. I don't think its out there as a stand-alone mod. Oh, also check your PM's!!

I use hxcamera mod. Not only does it use the volume keys to focus/capture it also incorporates the high bit rate video and audio mod. See post 7 in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183334
Also, Camera Zoom FX in the market has the option to map hardware keys. It was one of the 10c apps yesterday so if you hurry you may still get the deal.

I managed to get the app from the market, but that mod you linked to works exactly as I wanted. Thanks!

Can anyone tell me if this mod fixes the high gain mic recording issue so videos aren't distorted? How do you install this mod onto a rooted epic touch?
Thanks.
To install on a rooted e4gt all you have to do is save or paste it into the "system/app/" folder. You must have read/write access. I use Root Browser in ROM Toolbox, it has r/w by default (I think). I usually rename the original "camera.apk" to "camera.apk.bak" first so I have a backup. If you have a shortcut on your home screen you will need to make a new one.
I am not familiar with the audio distortion other than it being low quality in the stock camera (64kbps if I remember correctly from other threads). Check the links in the previous posts to see if the high bit rate audio mod addressed the issue.

Not finding it for the SII, wondering if there is an app or a mod that would allow us to use the Volume button for the Camera to take a picture with?
Even if it were the power button, but anything but the touch screen option?
I'm using the stock camera so if there is another camera app that does this, please give me a recommendation. Thanks for reading!
Using the power button for camera would be awesome!
Was a great feature on the vibrant. Would love to have it again.

What about a button remap? Like using the search button maybe?

Great idea.
In the meantime, the app CameraFX (paid) has the options to map keys to different functions and yes volume keys to take shot.
You can do this in CM7.

Sweet, problem solved! I think I got it for free from Amazon daily app or the 10ceng app deals..
Either way, I have it and will be using it for now.
Yep, I've been using Camera Zoom FX since they had it for 10 cents a while back. It's my default cam now because you can touch the screen to take a shot, plus remap the volume keys. Also there are a lot of settings you can go though as well. I recommend the app over the stock cam.
Am I the only one who is sad that the Stock Camera doesn't have an on screen shutter? I wish it did. It has so many more customizable options than a third party app like Camera Zoom FX or UCam. Sometimes it is awkward trying to hit that tiny little shutter button. Especially chasing a 2 year old. Any thoughts?
Doesn't it have like power or volume shutter

No. That would be awesome too. Apparently I dont have the correct Kernel that supports the MIUI Camera with the power button shutter. That would be very streamlined.

Certain roms have the power/volume shutter button option but I'm pretty sure that the camera ICS app has that option too.. And there is a free version in the play store

Are you on stock tw? I thought it had that option. Haven't used tw since last month but aokp has the power button option.

I'm on the Darkside Evolution v8. The camera that comes with it doesn't hVe it. I'll check out the ICS camera in the play store. See what it has. .
:Update: The ICS Camera in the Play store has the ability to use volume button as the shutter. It works well. I wish it had more custom options but it fits the bill. Thanks !

Not taking credit for this. Just putting this out to help anyone in need of it.
This enables you to take a picture with volume rockers and makes your camera record in better resolution. Also REMOVES THE BARRICADE OF NOT BEING ABLE TO USE CAMERA ON LOW BATTERY.
