Question About MicroSD Cards - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey
I hope I don't get flamed for this, as I tend to find plenty opposition when trying to justify to people why I need so much storage space Basically would like to store most my music and have space for other stuff on my phone. Currently have a 32gb card and was either thinking about buying an 160gb iPod classic (which I really don't want to do as I find physical hard drives to be unreliable in portable devices/especially ipods). Alternatively I was considering purchasing a 64gb micro sd since I've heard that these cards work with out phones.
The problem here is that this card still retails at over £100, and I'm not sure I can justify spending that much on a card that will definately plummet in price once the 128gb variety are released.
So, a couple of questions... Firstly, does anyone have any information of when 128gb Micro SD cards will be available (I can probably justify spending over £100 for that much storage)
Secondly, if our phones work with the 64gb cards, will they also work with the 128gb cards and the rest up until the theoretical limit of 1-2tb?
Thank you for any help

but dude, i'm just venturing an educated guess here. but the price of a 128gb card isn't going to be 4x's the cost of a 32gb card. it's probably going to be about 3-5 times the cost of the 64gb card for a while after it's released. i'd look for the 64gb sdxc to be widely available in Q3 2012. by widely available i mean, in stores like curry's and the such. to understand the cost differences read the article below. and about the 128gb card, probably about a year or so after you see the 64gb @curry's.
these things are first proved possible. as in 'proof of concept', then they go into research and development. THEN into mass production. it takes a while for that process to occur.

as to your music needs:
have you considered google-music, or amazon-cloud storage?
also, as an android user you have 50gb free online storage with www.box.org. just DL the box app, and register for free.
there's also skydrive which offers another 25gb.

Thanks for your response. I figured that since the 64gb cards dropped relatively quickly in price, I was hoping the same would happen with the 128gb ones around the £100 mark.
The 64gb card is nicely priced at £89 atm
http://www.picstop.co.uk/sandisk-mobile-ultra-micro-sdxc-card-c6-64gb/?source=awin
So may just wait for it to go down more.
Will look into the online music storage. Thanks for your help. The obvious problem with this though is that you require an internet connect (probably a 3g one too), and it wouldn't work on the underground. Could still be an option though..
Thank you for your help.

wow. that's an awesome price, even cheaper than in the US considering the conversion rate. if it's only a limited time offer, maybe you should jump on it!
yeah. gMusic works best on wifi, but also offers offline playlist sync options. if you could plan what you want to hear on the underground on the way home or to work, you could sync it before you leave, maybe.

Dammit, why'd you have to mention the 64GB card
Now I'm going to have to shop for one.
/ Cloud storage is not for me, as I could only use it when connected with WIFI
// No high-speed cell service in my part of the world...

SDXC cards are priced pretty reasonably now, has anyone confirmed if they got a 64gb sdxc to work on the G2?

32GB MicroSD - working in X10

Just in case anybody was wanting a hands on confirmation....
How much did that cost you?
$199US direct from Sandisk US online store (selling it exclusively at release, and still exclusive through them but also available from their UK store, problems with stock currently). I got it shipped to NZ using Shipito, which is an excellent service for us non-US residents.
Expensive, but then I've had the money saved over a year now since the 32GB cards were meant to be released ages ago!
Why the hell did you pay that sum of money for card !?!? )) DO you really need it or just for fun ? Because maybe it would be smarter to buy now 16 Gb for like 50$ and when that become small, in year or two, buy 32 Gb for 50-100$, because that would be the price in 2 years....but cheers to your purchase
You have no idea how sick I was of not having all my music on the phone, along with room for apps etc. I've had a 16GB card since their first release and its chafed continually since then.
Besides, 32GB cards were expected ages ago, so I've had the money saved! I budgetted to pay even more to be honest, and still would have made the purchase in a heart beat if they had turned as expensive as I had estimated...
Then enjoy it !
thanks on confirmation ,i really wanted it
I have heard some noise about the 32gb not working for what ever reason. I know we have had one user claim that it is working on there device. Is there anyone else who has had problems with the 32gb? Or, are there any other success stories to be heard?

What 'noise' have you heard ? I know personally of someone who has 32GB card in his phone and it is working fine. I have seen two users on here sucessfully claim to be using 32GB cards in their X10.

" I know personally of someone who has 32GB card in his phone and it is working fine." This is what I am looking for, thank you. The rest was just noise.
Anyone else have any actual personal experience of the 32gb microSD working or not?
Yes, I've not had any major issues with a SanDisk 32gb card, a couple of issues with it not mouting correctly when trying to connect it to my computer and use it as removable storage but I get this occationally with the supplied 8gb card too.
Tested with my friends to start off with, and I've since been out and bought my own, you can buy and use with confidence, using mine mostly to store movies (only so I can showcase the phone - I find myself daily needing to justify why I didnt buy a Desire...).
Currently only about a hundred meg free.
It will become a lot more useful once the phone is rooted.
£100 for a SD card is a lot of money... If I were to do it again I probably wouldnt have bought it when I did, knowing my luck by the time we've rooted it they'll prolly be a third of the price!

I can also confirm that 32 GB SDHC MicroSD cards works well with X10.
...and I can confirm that there are 32 GB MicroSD cards out on the market that does NOT follow SDHC (SD 2.00) specifications, and might therefor be incompatible with the X10.
I was careless and happened to get my hands on one of these non-SDHC 32 GB cards.
SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacit) cards does not work as far as I know of.
it seems that the SD card is cheap in China........i wanna a 16G one
China SD cards
I have read in message boards that china is spoofing the settings on the card to make the phone believe it is a 32gig card, and most of the time people get the card, stick it in the phone see 32 GB and give positive feedback to find out later that after 16gigs it craps out and they lose all their data. I would be VERY wary of a 25$ card from china. If you look at the pictures of the china cards, it used to be that there was a round sticker with 32GB written on the packaging. Probably over 16GB... but now the pictures on Ebay are all of a generic white background micro SD card with 32GB written on it.

verizon wireless had a special offer on the 32 gb card for the droid x customers, now you can find really good deals on ebay (range $65-100) for authentic 32 gb sandisk cards.
I bought mine for $89.99 (buy it now option) and it works like a charm.

32gb micro SDHC Memory Card (CLASS 4)

I just found THIS 32gb micro SDHC memory card (CLASS 4). Has anyone purchased one yet? I'm real tempted to get one but am a little uneasy spending this much for it to just be a fake. Doesn't Amazon protect you even when you buy from their resellers?
UPDATE: HERE is the review page for the company selling them. I don't know how accurate it is but the second review from the top is most likely about this card.
never heard of topram brand before, and $170 isn't exactly a bargain... especially if it turns out to be a junk card

I purchased a 16gb class 4 card from topram. I used it in my hero (with A2SD) and now use it in my evo. The card works well and is the correct size (I have filled it with around 15.x gb to test).
I think I paid $18 for the card. When I need more space I will buy more 16gb cards before I would spend that much money.
edit: the card holds 14.92gb.

Just curious, what file table system do you use to format these cards to work with most cell phones. FAT32, FATex, NTFS? Or do you use the internal phones format utility?

Actually, Verizon screwed me over one too many times so I won't have anything to do with them. If you have to ask me, I'd say don't deal with them. Other people seem to have good experiences with Verizon so I guess they just don't like me. I must be flagged or something in their system. Anyways, I go elsewhere.
I'm gonna wait 'til 32GB Class 6 cards are ~$50 bucks, then I won't feel bad about missing out on verizon's screw up.
I would never buy this.

Gonna have to wait for 2 years at least. If you haven't noticed, 32GB standard SD cards aren't even breaking 32GB/$50 yet. Let alone a Class 2 32GB MicroSD, which has only been out for a few months.

Anybody tried this 32 gb sd card? Awefully cheap, is it worth it?

Found this on Ebay, don't know though. It comes out of Shanghai and the price is cheap. I'm more worried about cheap crap wrecking my phone. Anybody try one of these yet?
http://cgi.ebay.com/SanDisk-32GB-mi...gital_Camera_Memory_Cards&hash=item1e5e54d767
it won't wreck your phone, but it will probably die after a few weeks - if that long. If you but it, be prepared to throw away your money at some point and all the data on the card.
SanDisk probably won't warranty it because it is probably counterfeit.
don't think u ever will get it
last 16gb card i bought over ebay was about 7€cheaper then all the rest and i never saw it - got money back by paypal thats why i tried (and he had about 100 positive votings).
this seems to be about 50€ cheaper then a normal 32GB card and he has 0 votings - so he propably tires to get the money and vanish into dust before Paypal can claim the money from him.
would buy something more recent.
I bought a 16gb kingston class 4 on amazon, it was around 45$, and they had a promo that if you signed up for an amazon credit card you get 30$ off your first bill. so bought it and paid it off for 15$.
Honestly, with Froyo coming soon and apps2sd, Id really reccomend investing in a good class 4 or 6. The faster the speed of the card, the faster your phone will be able to pull and push data to it.
Another note, my class 4 can move large files at about 8-9 mb/s, but if there are many small files it will only run about 3 mb/s, so Id really recommend a reputable brand. That is not to say the kingston doesnt work good, just to say one of those cheapo 30$ cards advertising class 6 will probably run much slower and break apart quickly
Good point about the speed issue. Can't wait for Froyo.

Class ratings apply to write speeds not read speeds. Theoretically you can write faster to higher class cards, but this usually applies to direct writes on the device (camcorder recording to card) not USB between phone and PC. The USB copies (PC to phone) may be faster, but you have a additional overhead of the USB bus.
Buy a name brand card. I have an 8Gb Sandisk class 2 and it works great for Camera, camcorder, and anything else i want to do with the phone software. My 1080P camcorder has class 6 cards, but it requires it.
I'd steer clear from buying memory cards/ usb flash drives on eBay. I've seen way too many people get scammed on getting what they thought was a 16gb flash drive and end up with a 128mb stick with 16gb screenprinted on it. These microSD's are no different.

Actually I tested this using the sdhc adapter directly to the SD card slot. so no USB/phone interface interfering here. And again, thats what I was stressing. Buy a name brand card, probably a class 4 or 6 considering the move to froyo.

So you got the same MB/s throughput with the card reader as well as the phone connected to the PC? Still puts the USB bus in the way. EDIT - NM I see what you were measuring.
I wonder what the transfer rate is on the phone - back and forth between internal SD and external SD.
Huh, interesting concept. I dont even know of a way to test that
I bought a 32gig card from China for 18 bucks shipped. 1st time I've been scammed on ebay. It seemed to show up as a 32gig, but the phone wouldn't recognize it and wanted to format it....sure thing I figured. Now it shows as an 8mb card that won't format no matter what I do. I disputed it to paypal after the auction/seller disappeared on ebay, but they want me to send it back to China to refund. I considered this might happen and was willing to risk 20 bucks, but it didn't end up well. The funniest part was that it showed up in Kingston packaging, but the date was 2008. I'm pretty sure 32 gig microSD's didn't even exist in 2008.
Thats terrible!! well good luck getting your money back... Lol so I guess if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Id just stick with trustworthy sellers, brands, and sites, and look for good deals!

I am not sure where you found this - but the official specs call for up to 32GB card:
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SGH-I897ZKAATT-features
Many people are using 32GB cards. It is the limit of the SDHC spec, so the 16gb is probably a typo from somewhere.

Not sure if the one I purchased is the same because the item post has been removed but mine came from Beijing I believe. Came in a Kingston package which was obviously fake. Put it in my phone did a format and it showed a 32gb card. Writing files takes forever directly from the computer but everything looks good so far. Mainly using it for music.

Looking for a 32 GB MicroSD card for my Evo....

Preferably from Amazon as I have prime and it'll deliver quickly.
I'm not looking to spend anything more than $70-80, but obviously I'd love something even cheaper. Anyone have any suggestions or anything?
Speed isn't a concern to me as long as it isn't TOO slow. Probably only using this for music.
I'm an FORMER iPhone guy (had a Nexus One, but not for too long - bought it when it first came out exclusively for T-Mobile's 3G network and I had AT&T.... loved the phone, but couldn't stand Edge) who doesn't have much experience with expandable memory. I don't really know what to look for! Thanks.
Just a laugh for you, but being a former dual iphone family I went into a AT&T store (I wanted a 32GB card then...that moment and locally) and asked if they had any in stock. Salesman rung up my purchase and asked my phone number...I replied I used to be with you guys and switched over to Sprint and sold my etch e sketches.
He replied its ok and off I went.
Granted I paid 150+ then, they are available just about anywhere for the price range you are looking in.
I got a SanDisk. I do recommend however you get one with an SD/micro sd card adapter and USB for microsd as it was so simple to move everything from one card to the other in one shot.
You dont have to have these, just really makes it easy to move all from old card to card in one click.
Here is the the one I got and its $94 and 5 stars by all 4 people at amazon.

With the exception of a few occasional and short lived deals on the Sandisk 32GB, you're not going to find anything less than $70-80 for a legit 32GB MicroSDHC card. Even $70-80 is a better price than you may find at this moment. Fakes are a very common problem -- smaller cards that have been altered to appear to be 32GB, but won't let you write anything more than the 2GB or whatever they really have in them. So even if you think you've found a great deal, be sure it's from a solid seller (and watch out for Amazon marketplace as well). There was a brief deal from Verizon earlier this year, and one from Sandisk direct a month or so ago that made it available for $50 and $57 respectively, but those are rare.
This Kingston is the card I have. It's sold out in this packaging from newegg right now, but I bought it for about $87 a couple months ago. Prior to sellout, it was going for $95.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139391
This appears to be the same card in different packaging (full size SD adapter instead of a small USB microSDHC reader), and it's also $95:
http://www.adorama.com/KGSDMC432GB.html
As far as I know, the Sandisk and the Kingston are the only legit 32GB microSD cards on the market right now. I haven't looked in the last month or so, but that was the case when I looked a few months ago. But there are also fakes sold as those brands, so be very cautious on any deal that looks too good to be true. Odds are very high it is.
I'm waiting for a steal of a deal on one of these 32GB cards also... my 16GB one is almost done for
I've been looking and waiting for a deal on one as well. My best advice would be to register on a site like slickdeals.net, setup an email alert for 32gb micro sd, and wait for a deal.
Here is a class 4 from Kingston for $105. This is the one I'm getting.
Or, even better, here's a thread about the 32GB Class 10 by Lexar for nearly the same price. Some of the links provided are even cheaper!
I got one off E-Bay for about $55 and it works fine.
Edit: Also check this out. I don't know if the code is still good or not. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852567
Personally, my advise would be to stay away from Ebay. I got 3 counterfeit cards there in the last couple of months. I got refunds for them all, but shipping one of them to China set me back about $25, and in each case I had to open a dispute before they'd provide me a refund. Now I'm trying to decide if I've got the money to splurge on a legit card in the $90 range, or if I'm going to wait and hope they come down in the next couple of months. No more eBay for me!

yes really cheap maybe to cheap but only £20 its got to be worth it to try
That seams too cheap considering memory just isnt sold at that price normally. Just make sure to read the fine print.
This is noted specifically for that sd card. (the other £65 128gb sd card they have for sale doesnt have this warning)
"When these brand new micro SD cards have been fully tested they vary in storage capacity, all cards range from 8GB to 128GB in capacity.. Please note that whilst these cards are brand new and have been shipped to us straight from the factory however they are sold as upgraded cards and therefore the capacity and speed may vary for each card"
Do some searching on the internet. The cards on ebay are cheap because they're fake. When you put them in your computer, they say they have the advertised capacity but they don't.
Also, they are very slow. If you want to be able to use it with the camera, you'll need something that's faster.
if you look at the feedback of those 128Gb cards you will see plenty of negative comments, saying things like constant data loss as cards need to be formatted all the time, not correct size, etc etc. i was looking at them but am sticking with my 32Gb one for now, as there are so many fakes doing the rounds that i would be wary spending 70 quid on one, let along 20 quid....remember.....if it looks too good to be true, it usually is too good to be true
ok well I just ordered a legit 128gb card for £66... will be ordering the phone tomorrow.... I CANT WAIT!!!
I always avoid cheap sd cards as in the past ive had nothing but bad look with them, either cheap knock offs that don't work or just really slow and die within 2 months! I would definitely avoid this seller:good:
