I'm curious if it's possible to just boot into cwm to do a backup and install a ROM. I would like to do something like this
fastboot boot recovery-clockwork-5.5.0.2-maguro.img
Then create a nandroid backup and flash a custom rom. The purpose of doing this would allow me to retain my stock recovery. Is this possible, are there any negatives to doing it this way, if I need to get back into CWM to restore my backup or flash a different ROM couldn't I just rerun fastboot without wiping out my stock recovery?
Flashing CWM does not modify your bootloader. The recovery and bootloader are two different things. Without unlocking the bootloader you won't be able to fastboot CWM anyway.

Sorry, I mistyped I intended to say recovery not bootloader, I have already unlocked my boot loader
You cannot Fastboot boot a recovery since this method is intended to boot a boot image.
There are no downsides to flashing CWM since it is trivial to flash the stock recovery back.
Temporarily loading CWM makes is more complicated, especially if something goes wrong flashing ROMs you have more steps to perform to recover.

What are you talking about?? Of course you can boot a recovery using fastboot. And it doesn't make anything more complicated.

Yes, you can do everything you stated. Although it is almost as much effort as flashing CWM and flashing the stock recovery after.

Yeah I was kind of thinking I was over complicating it I think I will just go with flashing it permanently. I did read somewhere in a cwm thread that there are a few issues with having cwm flashed to recovery like not being able to charge with the phone off.

That doesn't apply to us. That was an issue that came up with the early builds of CWM for the HTC Sensation. The problem with what you wanted to do is more of a recovery issue. What happens if you flash or modify the wrong file and you get stuck in a boot loop? Now you have to wait to get to a computer to re-boot into the recovery to get a restore going. As long as your boot loader is unlocked and you can turn the phone on you'll have no issues with getting it back to stock for a warranty exchange if that's what you're worried about.

i just flashed cwm to my gnex with rom manager after rooting the phone (without unlocking the bootloader). when i try to boot into the recovery, i get this picture of an android with its chest open and an exclamation. i would assume that the recovery partition was not flashed correctly? are there any suggestions?
thanks for your help in advance!
That just means the recovery was not properly flashed, what you are seeing is stock recovery. Try again via rom manager, or do it manually using fastboot.

Not true. If you have root, you are good to go.
@OP: the reason CWM is not sticking is because you updated your build with an OTA (or link). When you do this, the update adds 2 files to your ROM that re-flash the stock recovery on every reboot. You need to delete them and re-flash CWM.

You still can boot into CWM Recovery without deleting or change the filenames..
Just before you want to boot into CWM recovery...from CWM App..clck flash recovery..after that click Reboot into recovery.. doing these 2 steps..you will get booting into CWM Recovery yet not losing the stock recovery..

Yup, you can do that as well. But you would need to flash CWM every time.
Not sure why you are so concerned with having a stock recovery though. The "I want to be able to get the next ota" reason doesn't make any sense at all for these reasons:
1) The link for the next OTA update will show up on XDA before you get it. So in this case, you need either CWM or root to install.
2) Irrespective of whether you have a stock or custom recovery, you will receive notification of the next OTA update regardless. If you have the stock recovery, just click install. If you have CWM, start ROM Manager, install the stock recovery, and then install the update.

I flashed CM10 onto my phone a couple weeks ago, everything went smoothly. Today, I reverted back to stock and locked the bootloader so that I could receive the stock JellyBean update. Well I download the update, reboot phone into fastboot, attempt to go into recovery and I get the red triangle !. I know this is an issue with the phone apparently not finding a recovery boot but why didn't my reverting to stock reinstall the stock recovery? Does anyone have any guides they suggest to get stock recovery back? (I've found a few but thought I would ask).
Now, this is understandable that my phone can't boot into recovery since I flashed CM recovery onto it and whatnot, but I attempted to boot into recovery on my girlfriends phone (same phone, NEVER BEEN UNLOCKED OR FLASHED) and it can't boot into recovery either... Is something going on here or am I just missing a huge piece of the puzzle? I don't really want to have to flash anything on my girlfriends phone to fix it, she's not into the tinkering and would rather not have her data reset. Any help would be appreciated.
And for the record, I did a search to figure this out but at the very least I can only find solutions for people who have flashed CM or similar and nothing pertaining to the problem my girlfriend's phone has.
Tried reflashing recovery already? How did you "revert" to stock?

Used this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1848566
It worked, I'm on stock ICS, but I didn't do ANYTHING after booting into ICS again and attempting to install JB and booting into recovery. Did I miss something? How do I "flash recovery"?
Unzip the factory image you get from developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Then use fastboot to flash the recovery.
EDIT: red triangle doesn't necessarily mean the recovery is broken. It's just the way it is. If you wish to flash a 3rd party ROM you'll need to flash a 3rd party recovery.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I think you are confusing a few things here. First off, the Android with the red triangle IS the stock recovery main screen. (If you want to flash the update manually, you need CWM -- go into fastboot mode and type: fastboot flash name-of-recovery.img, where name-of-recovery is the recovery that you downloaded and want to flash.) Second, you need the stock recovery for an update to install over-the-air, but you need a custom recovery if you want to flash it manually.

this happened. you installed stock recovery when you reverted, whats the surprise?
and you dont need to relock bootloader to successfully update through ota. seems to me know the op needs to refine his searching skills.

So in the context of my girlfriend's phone where nothing has been done to it in the 4 months she's had it, why would it be giving the recovery error? Also, does flashing the recovery wipe the phone?
It's funny too because I just got the JB OTA but I'd still like to get this figured out.

run the update manually (found on the Update link on efrants sig) through cwm, that should give you a more detailed description of whats going on.
flashing a recovery doesn't wipe the device. unlocking will, btw. its not an error, its the stock recovery!

Alright, I think I got it... so the android with the red ! triangle IS stock recovery? I just remember on my Nexus S being able to boot into recovery and load up a stock .zip update manually without any custom recovery mod. Is this not possible on the Galaxy Nexus then? So what does the stock recovery DO other than sit there and reboot after a minute?

Hi everyone.
I was able to successfully unlock the bootloader and root the phone.
However, I have trouble trying to get into the Clockwork Recovery Mode. Every time I try I just get a message saying that this is a special distribution and some other legal stuff. I can't get into recovery mode.
Anyone else have this problem and fix it? If so, how so? I would like to install some custom ROMs.
Have u flashed the recovery in fastboot?. The screen with red letters is normal.it shows u have installed custom firmware on ur phone.

I believe I have. I have also done it via the Clockwork Mod app.
How would I go about making backups and installing custom roms?
For that u have to flash custom recovery. Flash it again...
Download appropriate recovery.img for ur phone. place it in fastboot folder.rename it recovery.img.go into fastboot n connect phone 2 pc.it should say fastboot USB. Now use command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img while in fastboot( not in boatloader screen).

I think I did that. But I will try again

Did it twice, unfortunately all I get is the disclaimer instead of the Clockword Mod recovery options. I can't even do a factory reset.
Here is what I used:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1635520
Still doesn't work.
If you flashed the clockworkmod recovery.img via fastboot and it says successful it should be on there. The HTC disclaimer boot screen is normal. You must boot into the bootloader and select recovery to get into clockworkmod.
The only recovery I can get working is Team Win. I Unfortunately after I install a rom it either freezes at the disclaimer or the rom reboots the system. The I can't even restore the stock recovery.
Any advice?

TWRP is more convenient than clockworkmod for this particular phone in my opinion. When flashing rom don't forget you have to flash boot.img (kernel) from the rom (usually extracted from the zip). If your having problems with roms you may have to RUU back to stock.
I woke up today to a bootloop. After pulling out the battery, I cant turn it on, it was stuck at the google logo. I thought it was some rom issue or something. When I had the time, in the afternoon, I just boot to recovery, and wiped data+sd card. Turns out sd card was not wiped.
Just now, I found a way to boot it. (AFTER WIPING DATA) I used the gnex toolkit and boot with insecure image, and guess wat? My old rom boots. Everything was the way it was, and then it crashed and stuck on the google logo again.(I made sure i wiped things two to three times, data and sd) I did a few experiments:
1) Flash using ODIN
2) Flash CWM using toolkit--it changed back to twrp after reboot
3) Changing the icon on my homescreen after boot--- everything was the same again after booting
4) Flash stock image using toolkit
5) Wipe data using manual adb
6) Try to lock my bootloader
Everything I tried changing, change back to the original state after reboot. What is the problem?
Device: Galaxy Nexus
ROM: Purity 7 sept release
Kernel: Fancy r42
Logs in twrp are showing updating partition, not FAIL. So I really don't think there is a need to show the recovery log.
HELP ME!
are you flashing your recovery or just booting the recovery?
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
use ClockWorkMod. I've heard nothing but problems with TWRP.

Oem unlock will unlock your bootloader and wipe the internal storage in the process. I saw you didn't use fastboot. You could try that. Flash the Factory image via fastboot. If that fails try omap flash.

Yup,I tried it already thru toolkit. Not working either.
Dude the toolkit blows, flash back to stock manually via adb command prompt. There are tutorials around here on how to do it. It's guaranteed to work if you don't screw it up.
Honestly flashing back to stock via adb should be something everyone should learn if you plan on flashing roms.

What's up everyone. I had a stock One but needed to get my crackflash on so I bought a rooted One online.
So here are my questions 1) how can I tell what recovery is installed 2) how can i tell if the bootloader is unlocked?
And before you ask, I bought it third party so I wasn't able to get the info from the seller.
Thanks
Boot to hboot to see if the bootloader is unlocked. With the phone off hold vol down and power at the same time, untill a white screen appears (hboot). It will say at the top either locked, unlocked, or relocked. Then from hboot scroll down to recovery and select it with the power button. Once in recovery it wil say at the top which one it is and what version.
Thanks so much! Any suggestion on which recovery to use? I've read pros and con's of each. I'll prolly flash Vipers ROM.

I prefer TWRP. It has a nicer ui, and it backs up and restores a good 3 to 4 times faster than cwm.
That's what I'm used to. Can I just flash it in recovery or would I need to adb it over? I think the last time I had a rooted phone I flashed twrp via ROM manager

Best way to flash TWRP is via fastboot. Follow instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2416431
You could also use Root Recovery Tools - Flasher from the market as well. If you have a usb-otg adapter you can also flash it thru hboot as a PN07IMG.zip. And you can also flash it thru fastboot RUU mode.
Don't mean to hijack the thread but I had a quick question- what's the difference between doing an RUU and just flashing the stock OTA rom?
An ota updates not only the rom, but also all the other system images (bootloader, radio, recovery, and many other behind the scenes partitions.) Also obviously the ruu will not be pre rooted like the rom.
Got the phone today and the bootloader is unlocked. It has Clockwork installed. Its not the latest, any real reason to upgrade it?
Not really unless its realy old, which i doubt.

I would just recommend switching to TWRP though, CWM seems to give people issues sometimes
Sometimes current ROMs can have issues in flashing on older recoveries. I have had zero issues with twrp. While with cwm on my bolt all my backups got corrupted. I have tried cwm just to see how it is coming but like said it takes forever to do a backup. I just wish we could get the 4ext recovery. That was one recovery that in my eyes blew even twrp away. Twrp will never let you down.

I just did a backup with the CWM that was installed, it was only one version behind, and the backup is only 38mb?? I know that backups are usually 1 gb or so. I'm guessing I'll be flashing TWRP later on today.
That's definitely not a full backup lol.
