[Q] How to replace icons?E: 10-23

I would like to change some of my app icons could anyone help a total nube?

Edit: I'm going to put together the information I've learned from asking this question and the links and post them here thanks to everyone that helped me I know I still have allot to learn so anymore info would be greatly appreciated

There are a couple options afaik.
You can use ADW Launcher, which will let you choose any picture/logo/icon for any app you put on yr homescreen. I use almost all Launcher Pro icons in my ADW Launcher.
Or, much more involved and complete, rip open the apk in question and replace the icon with one of ur choosing.

I was thinking of trying to open the apk because I like sense but not shute what programs I need or what to look for but I'm willing to learn.

You really just need the program 7zip.
After you have it set up, right click on any apk, highlight 7zip, and pick open archive. The icon you'll want to change is in res/drawables andshould be called icon. Be sure any new icon you put in there is the same format, size and name. I have never made my own icons, just used others, I recommend icons from droidicons.com/launcherpro That may not be the exact page, but Google it if you like the minimalist theme.

You need a program called NinjaMorph its not hard to learn biut once you do you can google any image and use it as an icon to the apk of your choice.

Keep in mind that NinjaMorph only works on System Apps and does not work on Market Apps. If you want to change Market Apps the only way to do so is to open the apk and insert them.

Yeah, I have always just used 7zip to edit the apk's before install.

I must be missing something I open the apk with 7 zip and replace icon.png with the icon I want to use but when I put the apk (in this case google earth) it won't let me install it is there anything else I need to do?

Sorry, there is a bit more to it.
You also need to delete the META-INF folder and resign the apk.
I use this signing tool APK Signing Tool
It's an edited version of a zip signer. I didn't make it, got everything from this old thread Editing APK's

Thanks good thread. So using these will rewrite the meta file that I delete? After I do this I assume that the market apps will have to be manually updated and edited again.

Yep, a new meta-inf is built for you.
When there's updates for apps, it sucks, gotta redo everything
I went through and did all mine to Launcher Pro style icons, thought I was done, then the updates start rolling in and screwing with everything. Now, when I try a new ROM, I just preload it with all my edited apps before flashing, makes for a bunch of work up front, but it sure is nice to just flash, sync, and go. Then I disable all updates until it looks like something important is fixed/added.
And slightly off topic, what's the deal with market app developers putting out like 27 updates every week, driving me crazy. I know I have a lot of apps, but it seems like every time I look, 19 updates available. And I gotta go look at change logs and waste all my precious time at work when I should be getting stuff done, it's all their fault when my crews production runs low

I know exactly what you mean but it seems like some of them update everyday. Thank you for all the help was hopeing to be finished tonight but my nice just crashed my computer but as soon as I get it back up and going I'll be good the one good thing about it is it gives me a chance to do a dual boot with linux

Lol I look at this post just to see how to change the icons I hate the handcent icon lol(do you have a eclair one btw ) and I agree Adam every morning im driving to work and download an app and I get like 5 apps need to be updated lol specially if their games like fruit ninja man that's a long download if I don't turn 4g on

How to switch battery icons from one theme to another?

How do I pull the battery icon out of one theme and then place it in a different one? Thanks.

Copy and Paste
Open both zip files (do not extract), go to system>framework - open framework-res, go into res>drawable-hdpi - select the battery icons you want and copy them into your other zip in the exact same spot. They will overwrite the ones that are there. Save the zips and you should be good to go.
If the xml files of the battery you want to use are different then the ones in the theme you are using, it will not display properly, but if they are the same, you should be ok.

Is it possible to pull everything out of the theme other than the battery, and then flash just to battery on top of the current theme i'm using?

In short, no... because you are replacing framework-res, it will replace all the images. The bestway to get the battery is to find one you like and copy and paste it to the theme zip.
If you were to remove all the other images and flash it, I imagine there would be a whole hot of problems.

Tell me which icon set you want into what theme you are using. It's not hard if you know what you are doing. I can do it for you once I have both sets of files. Will take about 10 mins if both framework's are the same. More problems if the charge icons 9,10 or 20 vs the 100 I use in my theme.

Holy crap, I actually did it, and it works... At least I think it does, I'll have to wait and see if I missed any...

Try making a metamorph if your just trying to change a few images in an apk.
cd's or tapes?

How do you "go into res"....im running windows and that box comes up where i have to make a decision about finding a program to run the file...thanks?

"res" is the name of the directory inside of the apk. Open .xml files with something like Notepad++ and open .png files with Photoshop or GIMP. Of course you can just view them with the Windows Photo Viewer but that doesn't allow you to edit them very much at all.
EDIT: just saw the last reply was (from me I might add) in May lol. Thread necromancy at its finest

Its ok...i wasnt expecting to get a response till next month lol...ok...im in ...i downloaded a program..i went exacty where you said...but i cant find the battery icons...what will they be called? I only found the ones labeled battery_char..which is short for charging..basically..i want to take the battery icon from black and blue glass theme..and place it inside the epic dark horse theme..i like the numbers better!!???

okkkk.........so i dug a deeper in the files....for this particular theme....its called...stat_sys_battery...and there is 100 of them..due to the fact its a number system..so all i have to do ....is use the copy or move button...and place inside the same folder where it should be inside epic dark horse....do i need to delete epics dark horse batt stats or it will override?

Actually there is what about 204 battery pngs to move on most 1% battery mods.
Take about a whole minute to highlight em all, and drag and drop them from one ROM zip to another ROM zip.
Make sure you grab all 204 or you will end up with a screwy looking charging animation or something else in the battery mod at some point

the "204" im looking for will all be in the same folder correct? And if so...wont all of them have some form of the word "batt" involved...? Cause i only ones i see is 1-100..full...unknown..and the batt char icons? Would this be one of the ones thats nots included in the "most" you were talking about lol?

Yes they are all in the res/drawable-hdpi/ folder.
They will be named...
stat_sys_battery_xx.png (these are the non charging images)
stat_sys_battery_charge_animxx.png (these are the charging images)
Really wont matter if you grab the unknown battery image... Just make sure you have all the normal and charging images and you should be fine.

[THEME] ICS'ed framework files for Syndicate Ice 1.1

a few notes: all images were kanged from Overstew's ICS theme for Calkin's ROM.
I'm not a themer (hence the .apk files), but I love Jez2cool's Sydicate Ice ROM. So I took the images from Overstew's ICS theme and copied them to the appropriate Syndicate Ice 1.1 apks. No other changes were made.
Crap. Can't link to images (or the framework-res.apk (which is over 8megs) ) because I haven't posted enough. Ummm, bear with me here... Any suggestions on how to get link up?

Nice work! Hope to see more work from you... the locals are ravenous for more themes... I think if u post about 8 more posts throughout the threads you will be able to post that framework...

File is too big to post. Would love to get the mediafire link up for everyone tho.

Lol sure. This is the stock eg30 theme. Keep in mind you will have to resign the zip to get it to run correctly after u add the apks (sorry if u already knew that... u can just delete the extra apks in it...)

yes that's all you need. If you want take a look at the updater script, in the Meta-infs/Google/com folder i believe? It'll have the language there needed to tell cwm what to do, think you don't want to use just a standard notepad app to write as it may fail.

Theme Help, Looking for PNG Location

I have been trying to find this image and cannot. In the screen shot I am trying to take the progress bar you see in green and go blue with it. I have looked through both frameworks and systemui and anything else I can think of. I can find several twprogressbar PNG's but they are already blue from the theme Im using. Does anyone know where that image is at. Thanks in advance.

Checked both. The actual provider doesn't even have a Res folder. Kinda odd.

Its an xml not a PNG. I don't have a PC right now so I can't look and tell u the exact one but dazed knows. I would send him a pm. Sorry I couldn't be more help but it changed in ICS and without being able to look I can't remember which it is.

Hey that is awesome. Thank you. I throught I was going insane. Its the only green really left and I wanted to try and change it. I'm not the greatest with XML but I can give it a shot. Thanks again. I'll shoot him a PM after while.

Its really easy to change. If u want u can download my theme or Dazed‘s blue theme or an ICS theme and when u know the exact one u can swap them out or you can open them up and look at it so u get an idea. U need to use something like notepad++ to edit the XML and if your going to make the change yourself your going to need to decompile the apk because just extracting it with 7zip or something won't allow u to edit the XML. U won't be able to read it.

Thanks. Once I know which one it is I may do that. The hardest time I'm having right now is decompiling and recompiling ICS frameworks without issues. I am using APk multi tool and for the life of me I cannot get it to see the project. I try to decompile with dependencies and it says select a project so I do. But it never selects. I'll keep playing with it. But if burst knows which one it is that would be awesome. I see he's now in the thread.

Have u tried using the tool agat posted in development?

You know I downloaded it but didn't really give it a shot. Maybe that should be were I move to instead of keep beating my head against the table with the Multi tool. I'll give it a shot.

Apk manager is the best. I'm tired so too lazy to read previous posts, but the progress bar XML is progress_horizontal.XML under framework-res.apk > Res > Layout.

I just decompiled that and couldnt seem to see that file in the layout folder. maybe im looking in the wrong place?
Edit, there is one in the drawable folder?

Well I changed out the Progress_horizontal.xml and the TWprogress_horizontal.xml from the drawable folder. I used the framework from Tiffs ICS with a twist of Honey theme v1.0. That damn bar is still green. Verified all the PNGs were right. And made sure that I did indeed get thee right xmls switched over. Not sure what else to try. I looked in the layout folder and there wasn't a file named that in there. and ideas?

My bad, it is drawable. For ICS, it might be a part of SystemUI. (They also placed the battery mods in there.) Try those sub folders and search for "progress". I haven't done any ICS theming as of yet, but I think that should do it.

I think I may have got it, I just decompiled and changed the color code in the progress_horizontal.xml and recompiled. I looked through systemui and didn't see any files with that name. It's gotta be the framework-res one. Are you editing the hex values? Eg: #ff475864

Not sure lol. It should show up if you have the apk in the right folder. I think u gotta place it in the 'pleace apk here for modding' folder. Option to select should be 25.

Need a developers help

I am looking fire a developer who can help me port over a simple mod. I tried in my own but do not know enough. I do but want them to just do it I want them to explain what to do so next time I can do it myself.
I originally thought I just needed to change the Mount points but that did but fix it. After installing the mod the phone hangs at the boot splash animation fir the Rom.

What phone is it for? If it involves a resource file from another phone it prob needs to be modified for our device's framework-res. Will also DL and take a look later
Edit: there is a resource file in there, that would be device and android version specific. And since its not a whole Apk it'd be hard to decompile and port. What's it from?

Pretty sure it's from the sgsIII thats where I saw it as part of morphology so it shouldn't be extremely difficult to port or remake if need be. As a matter of fact mackentosh may add it in if he updates his morphology port since it's included in the newset sgsIII version. It "flashes new font colors to the /system" by replacing the compiled resources.arsc from the framework-res.apk from the sg3 Which is why he's getting a bootloop. And unless we have his framework-res.apk its not all that easy to decompile the resources to change. So unless you know something I don't this is built for the wrong phone and can't just be "ported" by replacing a few files here and there.
You could chuck this resource file into the stock framework-res that he's using and decompile, that sometimes works. Then copy the appropriate lines in colors.xml etc to our framework-res then compile. Then take that resources file and put it in a morph zip and it should work. But there's tons of xml's in there that are dif on our note

Its universal for TW roms on the sgsIII so it would probably be easier to just redo the mod based off of the note 2 files instead of trying to actually port it over. I haven't had a chance to open it up and see what we'd need to mod for a note 2 version. But seeing as how the sgsIII version works with any TW rom it shouldn't be too hard to make something similar for the note. The flashing part was just what they said in the sgsIII thread, I just haven't had the time to look and see what exactly it does.
Edit: I was actually thinking it was xml and smali edits to change the system font colors. I'm not all that great with smali/backsmali but I can manage as long ad I have my cheatsheet handy

Hmm I didn't think it would be that big a deal. I flash lots of sg3 stuff and they run fine. This is from morph like people have said and I run the morph itself directly as was written for the sg3. I am told something needs to be modified but it works fine for me the way it is and none will tell me what the original morph needs changed. I was thinking since this is pay off the morph it would be simpler than De compiling. I used to be a programmer and it kills me to have to wait around for someone to do something I could easily learn to do with a little guidance. . I will just keep trying. .
What resource is it using that would need to be changed?

It's not that it's a big deal, its just that without the entire apk it makes it a little more difficult getting the values from his work and transferring them to ours. Most likely one could just download the rom he was working with (was it like LJ7 or something?), pull out the framework-res.apk, put the resource file from the morph into the framework-res.apk, then decompile it.
The rub is that we are not just dealing with single xml's in the morph. Alot of the time morphs with single xmls will work between phones, as the description for a battery mod or whatever is generally the same in Android. The problem is there is a resource file, which is several xml's bundled together from the values folder of a decompiled framework-res. In there there's several things that are device specific, the dimensions of things, the styles.xml, the public.xml etc. That is what is most likely causing the problem. All you want from the resource file is the info and values from the colors.xml, it's just by itself and needs to be reunited with its apk to be decompiled and transferred. like a tiny example, your transferring a resource file with a colors.xml bundled that doesn't have entries for the SPen, doesnt have a public xml that has all the info and id's of the SNote images in framework etc.

Yes I understand that if a resource file is used it is but a simple move . What does would I look for to know it had a resource file?

Not sure what your saying here, but I saw it had a resource file included by opening up the zip and looking inside.
In general I'll just say, it seems like your making it sound very easy to simply change all the text colors of a phone. Its not. The xml and such are scattered all over and different for each phone. So essentially your asking someone to either do it, or teach you how to theme as it would take hours and hours to explain the whole process of compiling, searching and changing all the appropriate spots.

I was asking what kind of file is a resource file. . .xml ? When I open up a zip what would I look for to know it is not going to be compatable
I did not think it would be a big deal. I know now it is.

Resource.arsc is the file. Needs to be decompiled to change. Its not a big deal, you just can't swap files between phones all willy nilly.
Doesn't seem like there's much more I can do to help. You've had a few people chime in with good info and try to help and you haven't even thanked anyone for the effort, so...I'm out

Unfortunately all the suggestions went over my head. Not yet knowledgeable enough to understand. As i said I am trying to learn. Thanks for trying. I guess I need to figure out how to decompile a rom. Got everything installed to do it but cannot figure it out. Looking for some hand holding but cannot find any.
