[Q] SD card proper replacement process - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got a new class 10, 32gb sd card. What I would like to know is if there is a recommended 'process' to swap out my existing sd card?
When I copied the contents of my old sd card to my pc (win7x64) using standard copy/paste, I got an error on a few folders that the path was too long to paste. I know windows has limitations, so I'm going to mount both sd cards and just copy from the old to the new directly using robocopy.
Will there be any other issues due to media serial number or anything like that for apps that were installed to the sd, or am I over analyizing this?

The paths should not have changed from one card to the other. Since your source did not gawk at the long path the destination should not also...unless u grabbed the parent or pasted into a child or something. That said I know you nand and use tb. I would grab the current backups, images, whatever else u want and eikther nand or tb what daata was sd stored that you want back. Just my opinion.
The other thing is I would format the card in the phone first.

Yea, there were quite a few 'res' folders deep inside a google.books subdirectory that exceeded windows ability of copying. Don't use so I'm just going to clear data on the books app. Will hang on to old sd card before formatting and reusing somewhere else.
I will document anything else I find...

As long as the card is formatted, can't you just copy the contents of the sd card from your PC back to the card (assuming you copied your SD card to the PC)?

The issue is that windows has a limitation of 256 characters to use when copying files, which includes the full path from the root of the drive. Certain things work while others will not. Full copy in explorer is one of those things that does not.
So, copying my sd TO MY PC fails at a certain point. What did get copied will copy fine going TO THE SD CARD as there will not be a path/filename length issue at this point.
I tried the below (e is old sd, f is new) but still did not pick up the deep files. Didn't try robocopy.
xcopy e:\*.* f:\ /e /c /h /r
In my case, I did not care about anything in this directory, but others may. Just a heads up...

Swapping SD cards

Hi,
Can I copy the contents of my current SD card and put it on a new card without messing up anything? That is to say keep my apps, data and settings intact when I install the new card? I'm rooted with CM 6.1
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Yes, you can. All you need is a card reader.
If you use Apps2sd they would stay on a different partition, which Windows can't see.
If you don't use that everything is saved on your phone.
But it is safe to just copy and paste from one card to another.

Yes. I use Apps2sd - all I will need to do is copy the apps back to the phone then copy the card contents to the new card.

Wait - what?!! He was talking about apps2ext. If you're using what came with the rom and haven't created an ext partition then you're using the apps2fat method. In which case you can copy over the files.
Or were you talking about apps2ext? If so, how did you get it done (pm me w/ answer so we don't hijack this thread)

Faulty memory card maybe.
Format your memory card and check if you still have problems with your apps.
In which way are they damaged?

That's an interesting issue!
Try this:
1. Move all the apps back to your internal memory.
2. Delete off the .android_secure folder.
3. Copy your important stuff back to the computer.
4. Format the memory card from your phone (not from your PC).
5. Reboot the phone.
6. Copy back all the stuff and move the apps back to memory card.
See whether it helps.

It looks like there is a serious problem with your phone handling the SD Card. I can't suspect the phone, but only your SD Card.
Try with a different SD Card. By the way, is this card came with the phone? If yes, try to get a replacement in the service center.
And, you are welcome to press the "Thanks" button anytime you like .
yeah i will try that.thanks mate.

Can't find extension on my SD card. Please help

So here is my situation. I had the EVO 4g and just got the LTE (loving it BTW. Haven't rooted yet. Gonna wait a little bit). I'm sitting here at work plugged in as USB cleaning up my SD by organizing videos, pics, files, etc... Then, when I went back to the phone, there will still things there that I had deleted or moved. I was totally perplexed. Then it hit me that I partitioned my SD on my previous EVO. When the phone is plugged in as USB I am unable to locate the extension. How do I access the extension that was added?
Any help understanding this is appreciated. Thanks
Ok so I downloaded ES File manager and now I can see the ext_sd. But now it seems when I had the phone plugged in as a USB I was actually in the extension the whole time. All the things I did to organize my pics and files were in the extension. Also it seems that the phone is storing new pics and downloads on the extension. Can I undo an extension? I just want to have control of where things are stored and be able to organize them. This partition in really messing with my head...lol. This is a bit confusing for me so any help is appreciated.
Thanks
So are you saying you can't see the partition you made on the SD-card? Cuz if you are, that partition is in either ext-2,3 or 4 which Windows cannot see. So you have to use Linux to see ext partitions and move stuff, whatever with it.

That is correct. Can I undo a partition?
So when I take a picture it stores it on the ext. The gallery displays images and videos that are on both the ext and that are not on the ext.
When I'm in ES File Explorer I can see ext_sd. I can press and hold and it gives me the option to delete. What is going to happen if I delete the partition from ES File Explorer? I do not need it now with the LTE and all the extra memory. I suppose it will just delete everything on the extension but the extension will remain?
If you still have your old evo you can use ra recovery to re partition the card. Set swap and ext to 0 mb. This should restore the entire sd card to its full fat32 size.
Edit: this will format your sd card so have a backup of data.

Is "erase storage card" the same as formatting the card?
After I erased the card I went into ES File Manager and I can still see ext_sd. There are still file names on the card it seems but they all appear to be empty.

Yea....unfortunately it is for windows. It's 16GB card.
The "erase all data" did not eliminate the ext (I can see it in ES File Explorer). The phone stores new camera pics on the ext. It looks like all of the information on the card is in the ext. So when it's plugged into my iMac I am seeing the ext only and thats where I drag it into as I have no choice

me too. I would like to know how to recover data from it if anyone knows.
I've had this issue ever since upgrading to ICS. It will say sd unexpectedly removed, or corrupted sd card a few times per day. Tried a new sd card, and got a replacement phone from T-Mobile..still does it on every Rom I use. Quite annoying. But, I have found that taking out my battery and holding the power button for a few seconds to drain all the juice out seems to bring it back.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
It means that the sd card is formatted to something that its not supported by the phone. I had this problem before, save all the data on your computer, make a folder and name it sd backup. then on the phone do a factory format only on the sdcard. or you can do it on recovery, it will format the sdcard too. then move all your stuff back from the computer and you're good to go
Dude I tried NTFS ext4 and fat32

it happened to me again while i was restoring apps after loading a different rom. this time, i put it in a card reader and ran chkdsk /r on it, and all my files reappeared. so i back it up this time. i am not sure why it happens so much.
i had this with one of my sdcard not long ago. i copied all the data from the sdcard to my computer and formatted the sdcard using another phone and put the data back on it and never had an issue since. i probably could have used the s2 to format while i was troubleshooting but it got fixed before i could try.

If you can save all your files to computer then let the computer format sd card to default fat32 not ntfs. Then move files back to sd card and it should fix the problem. I have done this method several times and it worked for me.

I warn you trying this setting. I tried this >>> Editing .XML file. I started getting severe force closes especially Google Frame Work Services. Even reverting did not help. Had to use my Nandroid Backup to go back.
4.3 is sucking so far for 64 GB External SD Card write support. Titanium Backup & Helium both apps can not do automatic scheduled Backups on External SD Card since 99% of the time they do not get Write Access. Only way to do an external SD Card backup is manually after rebooting the phone, even that is hit n miss.

I agree with you. 4.3 is still far from 64Gb SD Card support, and I know that editing this file can be dangerous, but I read that someone was able to restore his card and due to its cost was worth a try. During my tentative, this update didn't have effect (but at least I didn't get more troubles).
