Was wondering what other Galaxy Nexus owners use as a filer manger. Used to use Explorer (not root) on my old phone, but it does not display properly on the GNex.
I am open to the "Icon" style GUI's though I tend to like the list style better. I don't mind pay-for apps.
I use ES file explorer.. I like the GUI and it works fine on the GN
Root Explorer is the best I've found. A recent update made it possible to open most if not all file types from the app. I was using Astro to do that but now that Root Explorer can do i as well it's a one stop shop for me.
There is a new free alternative to Root Explorer called Root Browser. I used it a little a few weeks back on my Droid 3 but it doesn't seem a mature as Root Explorer so I haven't used it since.
Everybody has his own preference but the 3 main ones I've noticed around are
ES File explorer
File Expert
Root Explorer
ES File Exlporer doesn't get to ALL files though does it? I have root explorer , but I can't update.....some crazy mess going on with that app , in the market( only for me though). I am still on version 2.16. Is root browser pretty much the same as root explorer ?
The best File explorers/managers you can get are:
Androzip
because of it's easy-to-use interface and because of it's understandable options
ES file Explorer
This app coninces due to it's colourful interface. It has good and accecable controls, and it barely interfears with anything...
The only thing that bothers me, though, is that you have to multi-select, to delete files/folders...
Root Explorer (File manager)
This app starts automaticly in the root section (filesystem)
You can use this ap, to remount your filesystem, and you can moify the SDcard speed, whilst you're at it...
The only thing that is missing, is the colourfulness in other explorers...
The same goes for speedsoftware's explorer.
It starts in the root section, and you can have a look-see through your OS, you can delete things from your SD card, but you cannot modify your OS.
That's why I would recommend this to beginners/hobby modders...
Those are he main explorers, and they are all together the best you can find.
I'll give another vote for ES File Explorer. Great UI and worked for everything I needed.

So for replacement of system apps and stuff like that ,root explorer will be my best bet then right

All the above mentioned work quite well so it's really just a matter of preference. I like the simplistic UI of Root Explorer (+ it's the first file explorer I bought when I first started with Android) so I use it.
My vote goes with ES.
Contrary to some comments above, you can access and modify all files with it (it is root enabled), and you don't need to multi select to delete stuff, you can long press...
The built in text editor and zip manager work with ROM zips and scripts etc, and even apk files. I even use it on my GTV because the built in movie player is compatible with more file formats than any other player for GTV...
And I just love the wifi explorer and cloud storage integration...

I believe (its been a while) you just go into ES File Explorer settings and enable the root access feature.

i personally use ES, its free and pretty much fully functional
root explorer ftw.
ES and Astro work but I can't stand the UI.
Simple for me, "explorer" if you're not rooted and "root explorer" if you are. Both apps are by the same dev. Clean, intensive and ad free.

Very sorry, this is a bit of a newbie question. I've updated to revo HD 2.1 and recently put on the power notification widget add on.
It says you can edit the widget.txt file in system/customize.
Well I got there but using root option on estrong yet I cannot see or edit the txt file. I've accepted superuser access etc. Selected Hiapk, didn't see it, selected cryogen and that didn't see anything either..
I also tried atsro and root explorer with no luck.
What file explorer people use to edit root system files?
Thanks for reading.

Why don't you edit the txt file on your pc before flashing the mod? ES file explorer should do fine...
Doh, I think it wad titanium back up causing problems, I reinstalled it and everything looked fine.
Out of curiosity, how do I explore system dir when on pc?
Thanks for quick reply.

Answering to your first post I will recommend ES File Manager too.

You can do it using adb, but you would have to work in the terminal (unless there's a GUI for it I don't know off?)
Regarding your first question: I would recommend Root Explorer, works like a charm

i think that ES file explorer is the best of the explorer
I use ES File Explorer and sometimes AndroZIP for unzipping archives.
Isn't he asking for a file explorer which will let him edit /system/customize/widget.txt?
I think the thread title is misleading.

i haven't found a thread about it and i'm searching for this by 2 months, i'm want some kind way to browse my internal memory by pc, if there's a way, name it please. And have another question, i already have root me play and installed Astro, IO and ES Explorer but no one haven't asked for superuser permission, cuz i want to to change the apk file from psemu native and i need this permission, if someone can help, don't hesitate, please.
adb pull is your best bet to copy internal memory to your pc to browse it.

Going into your phone via SSH should allow full access, since you have root. The app needed on your android is QuickSSHd ($1.49 btw). On your PC, download WinSCP then link them up.
Or if you want to explore the root partition from your phone, use Root Explorer ($3.99)

anyway TS, to add on your choices, try 'wifi file transfer pro' https://market.android.com/details?id=com.smarterdroid.wififiletransferpro&feature=search_result
works like a root explorer, but this is for PC, browse or upload/download to/from your android file system..

I've personally used WinSCP on my android, so yes. Works brilliantly
I am at a loss. I have found a thousand people on the interwebs that seem to have this problem but I have been unable to find a single solution.
I have searched these forums and every other android forum I can find. Hopefully I'm not posting this in the completely wrong forum but at this point I'm so fed up I'm seeing spots.
I want to use File Expert. I like it, it's pretty, it SEEMS like it might be useful to a person who wants to copy/move files.
But, it just says "operation failed" when I try and copy files into a system directory. (I have some ringtones, alarms, etc that I want to be available even if I'm in usb storage mode so I like to move them into the system directory).
I can move the files from a terminal emulator (pain in the you know) but Root Explorer (ugly) is the only file manager I can find that actually works to move them.
Am I stuck with Root Explorer or is there something I can do to get other file managers to actually work?
Yes I have enabled the root exploring function in File Expert and every option that i believe is applicable. I also like Anttek (quite visually appealing to me) but it doesn't work either.
Try es file explorer you have to have root permissions to move system dir apps and so forth in the settings of es file go down and check root explorer and mount the system as writeable and all your issues will be solved

Thanks for the quick reply and I will be happy to try ES File Explorer, but why would that work if File Expert (which also claims to be able to mount r/w) doesn't?
Is there really only just ES and Root Explorer that properly get root privileges?
Not sure? I guess so :/
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Oh well ES works and it looks pretty good so i suppose I'll use that. Thanks.
Maybe the other file managers did not obtain superuser permission properly, or don't like the new version of busybox, or just don't like Epics...but Biggie steered you the right way.
^^^^^^^^^ edit: you beat me^^^^^^^^
I know in es file explorer you have to go into the apps settings to give the app root permissions so it can get to /system and all that jazz. Maybe file expert has the same deal in the apps settings.
What is the best file manager, where I can look at all my files on my SD card - and also delete them without connecting up to a PC?
Also trying to delete that stupid Elysium trailer.
What is the best app?
Thanks.

Total Commander, ESFile Explorer and Solid Explorer are amongst best android file explorers.
file manager
root explorer, root access is required, it help u to explore all of file in external/internal memory and ex-sdcard
it can work fine without root access but cant del file in internal memory. it work fast than every file explorer but ui is very simple
ESFile Explorer for me, rooted required.
Tried Astro and ES Explorer.
ES is much better, perfect. It lets me delete stuff, and is very slick. Also, no adverts (that I seen) unlike Astro.
Thanks.
I can not miss the opportunity to plug Total Commander. The Best file manager for Windows and Android.
The crazy bastards even support Windows 3.11 .
Wondering what file manager app most of you all are using on this phone. I'm having trouble finding a good one with 8.1.
I had high hopes for the new Google files Go app, although it really doesn't seem like it can do much yet.
Solid explorer is still my explorer of choice after about 3 years and 4 phones.
Root Explorer.
Root Explorer for me. Tried other ones but I always come back to RE
Edit: been using MiExplorer for aweek or so now and I'm really liking it.
Mixplorer for me ?
Root Explorer
Fx file explorer for me
It just works and you can "tweak it" to your preference.
