Honestly not sure of this falls under "General" or "Q&A", so if I'm wrong, feel free to call me out...
I've had my ET for almost two weeks, and have been pretty happy with it.
I'm running stock ROM, with Chris's stock pulled CWM kernel.
My problem is that I'm having issues with heat, primarily while charging. Nothing palm-searing, but I have had a single instance that the phone complained it was too hot to charge.
The heat itself doesn't bother me, but everything I've read indicates that heat is bad for lithium batteries.
My last day to return under the new 14 day policy is Tuesday.
Since I haven't had any real issues, should I bother with returning and take the chance that I'll end up with something worse?

I had battery heat problems, traded it out, got a replacement with LOS.
Depending on how things go, that could be best as LOS stands a chance to be patched up.
are you over clocking and/or undervolting?
either one can cause that overheating situation...
I was planning on doing both, but have been hesitant due to the heat I already have...
The LOS isn't that big of a concern for me, but I would hate that any replacement would be worse off in whatever fashion...
It is just that whole limited return thing has me concerned that I will be stuck having something go wrong & I'll have to pay for a replacement. But, I could have that same problem with whatever replacement phone I get...
Download BatteryLife widget and change the settings so it shows extended info aka the tempature of battery and anything over 110 is getting pretty warm for this phone. Honestly bro it sounds like they need to replace it for you. Lots of people have replaced there phone due to Heat problems
Okay so my epic recently started overheaing again. This first started happening 3 months ago til I took it to my local sprint shop and they fixed it for free. They said not to overcharge my phone and that they had to boost my battery. To further explan my problem, my epic gets really hot when browsing the internet but regardless of that, I just leave my phone in my pocket and next think I know when I try to unlock it is that it shutdown. When it happens, I have no idea. I can't even turn the phone on unless I remove the battery and put it back in. I'm running cm7 (the latest update from 10/22) andi listen to music in my car and most of the time its plugged into my car charger since the battery life is currently horrible on cm7.
So does anyone have any idea of how I can personally fix this or boost it? Its been more than a year so I'm not sure if sprint wll fix it for free.
Dont know what to say except for maybe you need a new battery! I have an extended battery and even though its a bigger battery with way more juice than the oem version, I still get about the same i did on eh17 [stock] but the random reboot thing has happened to me but I never had to battery pull to get it working. I am currently on cm7 too and I noticed that it only happens when its really low battery that it reboots or shuts down saying 0 when I am at like 5%...? but for the most part I think you might need to to a odin to stock and update ota to get ei22 if you want that modem or do ec05 and just use the modem-update zip found in the dev section, after you reflash cm7. my phone never over heats! oops once! I was watching movies on it all day with the wifi and via speaker from netflix but thats the only time. maybe you also might have a very aggressive app running in the background, and thats whats heating up your pocket! are you using tegrak for oc?
Thanks for your time man but not I'm not running anything to oc. I never oc because I really have no need for it. Neither am I running any aggressive apps. I tried leting my battery cool down overnight by taking it out and leaving it next to the window but no luck. The worst part is, this shutdown happens unless I constantly check my phone and use it. If I don't use it for like more than 30mins, it turns off and I hav to do a battery pull. And most of the time after the battery pull, my charge drops from like 90% to 15%
You said your running CM7? I remember on CM7 I couldn't even use the phone or it would reboot due to heat also. You should switch to maybe a different ROM if you'd like more use of the phone or wait patiently for a fix to this issue. I tried asking about this problem in the CM7 thread a month back and no one else seemed to have this issue but me.

I just flashed the EI22 Legendary Rom thru clockwork and same issue.. left the battery out for the second night in a row.. but it still overheats.. hopefully sprint takes care of this for me
Sounds to me like you might have a bad phone, and or battery. I know mine gets hot when using a lot of data like streaming music, or sitting in car dock in hot summer... with out putting ac on it... ><
But it does get pretty warm but not to hot to hold when in a pouch and streaming music from network via bluetooth to a speaker at work. Never had a reboot or shutdown from heat doing that. Only time I had it shut down due to heat was one time in summer in the car dock.. Streaming heat + 110F don't help.
Sounds like hardware to me. If it does it on stock and different roms.
Hmmm, i'm on legendary rom 4.0 with th IAP kernel and i've noticed that when surfing the net for a few hours or playing a game for a few hours the battery will get hot enough to fry an egg it seems. before installing EI22 i noticed it would shut down due to overheat but now I stop all activity on my own cause it gets way hotter than ever before and i'm nervous it's gonna fry. The phone I don't think is recognizing the battery is overheating anymore! Not sure. Thing is, I noticed before ever rooting that this overheating would happen if playing a game for too long on my phone. But doing same exact thing on a friends EVO didn't get hot at all!
Well if you are getting that hot then there is an issue. I work at a Radio Shack*i need different job badly.* and have seen a few phones where it is hardware or even battery related that they are to hot to hold really.
What games were you playing? maybe i will give it a try and see what my phone does. I do have the angry birds, fieldrunners, peggle, plant vs zombie, zenonia 3.. no issues when playing them for a bit.
The thing that gets my phone the hottest is to stream from like google music or xiia live*shoutcast streams* to a bluetooth speaker like I said above. Though streaming to internal speaker or headphones/speakers doesn't get to warm just slightly.
the game I was playing was drag racing (has happened with cut the rope too). Just played it yesterday and no problems. played for like 3 hours straight to test it. This was also after I had organized all the apps and things on my phone. I had found a ton of programs constantly running in the background and other things going on at the same time. Just a big mess. Cleaned it up and no overheating problems now. I think for me it's just something that's gonna happen once in a while when I got too much going on on my phone.
Hi, I have a HTC desire, its nice but it gets hot latley when playing games like angry birds for a bit when the battery drops to 20% or so, and I plug in in.. it starts doing reboot cycle.. I think it only happens until the phone cools down.
I know the only real fix for this is a new mainboard, but I am not under warrenty..
any suggestions on how to live with it, or work with it.. someone told me a bad sim card or sd card might do this to the phone... I have already put 2.3 on it and factory reset and such...

Wow, good to see im not the only one. I have the same problems, and depending on the rom they get worse or better. im running CM7 now and i have little problems, but when i was running the ICS beta it happend a lot, both on and of the charger and in my pants pocket or out.
If its overheated and i take out the battery i can smell a sort of molten plastic / overheated electronics smell.
for me it was the same - main problem is motherboard.
in the end service center exchanged for me motherboard and now this problem is gone.
but before this exchange i did following:
* decreased max cpu speed to 576-768MHz (via SetCPU)
* in one of old kernels I was able to manipulate with CPU voltage level, so i was decreasing it for all freq. which was used by me.
* charging only via PC usb ports - when it was able to be fully charged and not overheat
but the proper way would be only to bring your device into service center...
I would also suggest decreasing the max speed
might be that sleep mode doesn't work entirely as it should in some roms, not making the CPU frequency drop enough when the screen is off.
And your device might be getting old and wear is starting to show.
If it's actually damaged, replacing parts may be the only solution
This is a known problem for the first devices. The solution is to change the motherboard, of course at the service center.

How did you void your warranty? Rooting or installing custom does not void hardware warranty. At least I got my pvt1 motherboard replaced even when I had rooted and used superglue to fix some broken plastic under back cover.

Ya, the phone is just out of warrenty, it really is only 1 year in Canada.. no ifs ands or butts...
But the phone only seems to do the reboot loop when I play angry birds when the battery is low and or when I play angry birds when the phone is charging ..
I think it happend once in google street view...
in other words intense apps... that make the phone warm up and then the sensor tells the phone to restart to protect the processor from overheating, but when the phone reboots the thing is still hot so it keeps rebooting.. only solution is to take the phone battery out and let it cool..
I guess this problem could get worse but it doesn't happen with normal web browsing at this point. I might have to live with it until I find someone to replace the mainboard cheaper than HTC wants.. otherwise not worth it.
I guess lowering the CPU max might be great so it doesn't overheat in the 1st place, I will try that.
I don't really understand rom, I have 2.3 gingerbread, is there something else I can change to perhaps get a better radio signal on this puppy ?

I have this problem, although until recently it only when trying to use it as satnav.
I'm glad to hear it's a known problem though.
I contacted my provider and they said perhaps the battery is getting tired and causing it to reboot due to lack of power. I pointed out that it was the other components near the sim & sd card slots that were getting hot, not the battery, so they sent me another one. I did buy another battery too and that has made no difference either. As soon as I rooted the replacement phone it started getting warm too. I'm also pretty sure that the "replacement" was a refurbed one, since the optical joystick doesn't always respond and when typing msgs sometimes the vibe feedback stops working mid-word.
It's very frustrating not being able to use it for navigation any more (although it works happily with My Tracks for recording routes).
However since I've rooted it, I don't think I'd get away with requesting another replacement phone. I've tried installing other rom's that might run cooler, but when I do they always lock at the HTC splashscreen and I have to restore nandroid backup.

I think I have same problem...my Desire in regular use get worm at 35% and at 38% burns my hand...and what is wors,for 15/20 min. regular use(not havy or gaming) temp. rise from 28% to 37% but something confuse me...last night I play 3d games for an 1 hour and at 20 min. I put it on charger and continue to play games and 40 min. later temp. is 40% and stil no reboot but butom side of phone(not battery...front side (buttons and screen) and back side) is so hot that I can burn my hand on it. I put statistic that battery indicator show(time,%,temp.). So is it like that to you guys? Is your phone have that heat thing for 15 min. of regular use?

Ahhhhh.... My gf phone having this issue.. and i think the problem is the sdcard, class 2 and use it for a2sd..
But, i tried to unroot the problems still happen, even without sdcard, the best way for me is leave this phone.. :-(

simply installed it, and it had it run at lowest speed on idle so it could remain cooler
(you can check the settings on it to see what it runs on idle and modify to your needs anyway)
I have similar problem like yours. I suspect the problem is come from SIM because there is no this kind issue happened IF turn to flight mode or tool out the SIM.

Does anyone have issues with your SGSII T989 phones having extremely high temps?
I get it when using the GPS, charging the phone while i'm talking on the phone, and doing a few other activities. It did not do this on my first purchase of the phone and i'm a bit weary of the temps as sometiems it gets quite warm!
Currently I'm on O.E. SGS II Rom w/ root, that's about it! No OC no mods or anything of that sort. (Just CWM and Root).
Any tips would be greatly appreciated, as this heat as caused me from using my phone each day more and more.
P.S. I WAS on Juggernaut Rom and then flashed back to Stock, and it was having this heating issue then, should i try to do a complete 100% wipe like on one of the development threads and start from scratch like I just got the phone from the factory again? I wiped my system using Odin and it seems to of kept my old programs, no information like games and etc. was kept however, does anyone think that might be the problem? Once again thanks!

If you are rooted you might want to try a different kernel and maybe SetCPU. I had some overheating/temp issues a while back and after I lowered my CPU a bit and set it to an Ondemand state with a profile for screen off running CPU very low when not actively in use it seemed to fix the problem.. Btw SetCPU is free for XDA users, there is a thread somewhere in the Android Hacking Apps forum..

I'm on the stock kernal, I was on the modified 1.7ghz kernal before i believe, as I could overclock over that, but i just recently stopped that and went back to stock. I was and still am expecting the phone to malfunction on me sometime soon lol. It's been a really reliable phone so far! My G1 and Mytouch 3G slide (gf's phone) took soo many dumps on me while I used it. Each of those phones were probably sent back 5-8 times and they were kept completely stock for a while!
Back on subject though. Any kernals that go well with the factory rom? I don't favor any aftermarket roms right now as they're not stable enough for my usage IMO.
I have heat problems but I've always had the stock kernel...

Undervolt at the stock clock if you want to lower temps. However, charging will always increase heat especially if you are using the phone at the same time, and depending on ambient temps.
Dude my moms sgsII literally got fried because it heated up once. She was using her phone normally and all of a sudden it started heating up. She kept using it and the next day the phone won't turn on, charge or get into download mode. It looked like what a hard brick would look like. So I just returned it for a HTC one S.
Btw she was on full stock.
My phone heats up a lot because I'm down south with 90-95 degree temps and I keep phone in the car dock by the windshield but it never failed on me.

I thought it was a well fixable issue. Guess not? lol... Either way, everytime my batt temps rise, i notice i get 40-45C and i start to get worried. So if i'm in a car, i'd just put it next to the AC vent while the car's running and temps get down to about 25C and i'm good again. I just don't feel comfortable with the phone anymore like I use to. It never did this before, why now??
I have an app that warns when it goes over 40 and it happens daily. I was downloading torrents one time and it keeps the screen active while downloading and the thing got like 62 celsius before I realized what happened. It almost burnt my hand lol. if your ever in sunlight or palming the phone while using gps on 4g.
overheating is very common with this phone I wouldn't worrie about it to much it is uncomfortable though if in your pocket

Playing Osmos was like setting my phone on fire.

Are you sure I shouldn't worry? I mean, I don't want solder points falling off due to too high of a temp. Then again these temps don't even reach 100C yet. I've got the same app too probably, it's a battery monitor that tells u when the phone gets too hot. mine's goes off everytime i'm around 40+

Yep, I use GPS and often. It's just so much easier than guessing your way off a piece of paper. But yeah, like you the phone gets soo hottttttt. I have to always put the phone to my AC vent.
It's normal to a point.
These are serious computers we have.
Think of the old P486's back in the day, those things needed huge heat sinks and some even had fans
our phones which is what, 4x the cpu power and not only no heat sink but everything is squished together inbetween a hot screen and a hot battery
That being said, I use a program called A-see, which is to watch my security cameras while out.
And if I forget to close it out (Actually exit the program) It will keep running and running and eventually probably fry my phone
lets put it this way, I will actually start to feel it in my jeans pocket, it gets that hot.
Also I have a program which will alert me if my phone gets to 130 degrees F
And will automatically shut the phone down if it gets to 140
overheat protection or something
I had this issue where whenever I try to charge my phone it would overheat to the point unbearable to touch I went back to stock flash different roms in the end i exchanged it it was still under warranty

I've browsed the xda forums and few others extensively for solution of my issue, though to no help at all.
For the starters some numbers and general info:
Phone: R800i Xperia Play, 2.6.32.9-DooMKernel, Xperia NXT v.1.3.
Only default stuff running in the background.
For testing and possible solution, apps I've installed:
Advanced Task Manager,
No-Frills CPU (min. 134 MHz, max 1.114 GHz, smartass, sio),
Battery Defender (Temp 32C, voltage: 3.0V, changed from 4.0V).
I always keep Data, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS off, unless I need them. Brightness is about 30% most of the time, no auto-brightness control.
For solution purpose I've got manual network selection for 2G, usually it is 2G/3G auto search - never got issues with this.
I've got two batteries, stock one and a Tell Me one, both 1500 MAh, both never had any issues.
Today morning (7AM), as usual, I've disconnected fully charged phone from the charger. I haven't noticed a thing that could be off about the phone.
I've went to the work, and around 11 AM I've messaged a little, and then I've noticed a weird thing - phone was very hot and the battery info said that it is on around 30%. Of course, first I've tried was to reboot the device, and lower the maximum frequency of the CPU.
Unfortunately it wasn't a bug or a mistake - phone really had around 30% charge left. I've got a usb cable from a co-worker to keep the phone from dying.
In the meantime, I've tried resetting the phone to factory defaults, tried flight mode, setting everything to off - nothing helped. Also, what's more weird - phone was charging incredibly slow (that might be because of charging from PC USB) when turned off and it still was hot.
I've realized that phone is getting really hot only in one area - near top right corner (place where light sensor is), on the backside, after you extend the phone (there is a little screw there, under 'sticker').
After getting back to home, I've tried charging the first battery to 100% - it completed, using stock charger, but it took quite longer than expected. Discharging is quite fast - 1% per 4-5 minutes. In ~50 minutes I've got 90%. This gives roughly 7 hours of work on battery. In flight mode, with everything turned off, with CPU on 134 MHz.
On a second battery, which I have in right now, I am steadily progressing from 93% to the 0% at the speed of 1% per 3 minutes.
Phone is +2 years old, not on warranty.
Any advice could be really appreciated.
Is it a stock battery or an aftermarket? I had an aftermarket battery once. It had a similar response in my phone. Bought another battery. OEM and solved it.

Maybe it's battery fault.
One of my battery did the same thing (it even got even bigger due gasses inside it). Replaced it and it's working fine.
If it happends on both batteries, maybe it's hatdware issue. In worste case, something inside phone is shortcutted and drainibg current, causing heating. Maybe opening phone and cleaning parts inside could help.

Wouldn't hurt to open it up and using an eraser clean the battery contacts inside phone and on battery itself. Then use a can of compressed air to blast that bad boy.

I've got two different batteries, stock one that came with phone, and a second aftermarket one, which was rarely used - only on long trips when I wanted to play. Both of them couldn't be damaged like that.
Phone never fell on the floor, is always in protective rubber-like 'case' and of course it never even touched water.
Right now heat is strong enough to be a bit painful if you slide the phone out and touch the light sensor area on the backside. I will try to get some torx screwdrivers and open up this part, but I doubt I will find anything. I was wondering if switching back to stock rom could help.
I'm really at loss here since I don't wanna buy new one, though they're cheap right now (about 150$ in my area with 24 month warranty, without any contract), since I've got some holiday plans and wanted to have some more funds. I can go by with the 4-5 hour discharge time if I have a cable on me since I'm working at the office with computers. I can always charge the phone, but knowing that usually I never even fell under 80% after 8 hours at work is kind of bothering.
Have you reformatted the phone via flashing a ftf file... see if that fixes the issue.
Maybe try to use it without battery. Connect charger, remove battery while still powered on, and wait 15minutes (as i recall, it will not turn off). If phone is still hot, then it's not battery related problem.

Actually I've tried this and I've got some results. Phone turns off when it stays this way in OS for a while, so I did that in Boot manager, which I thought won't be affected by OS itself, and I was right - phone stays on, with screen on. Unfortunately, it is very hot in the 'usual' place. So we can root out the possibility that this is a battery issue.I am not quite sure, but also this is certainly not antenna, since it is off in the boot manager, as well as WiFi, BT and GPS.
So could it be that the kernel itself, which must have some module responsible for power management, went crazy? That is just my wild (hopeful) guess, and I wish that flashing will help. Any ROMs that you can advice?

In that case, if you don't know how to open phone, maybe it's best to take it to service.
If you do know how to open it, first start cleaning enterier. If that don't help, try to power it while dissasembled, and see what chip is overheating and google for it's model to see what it is.

Thanks for advice. I will flash the phone completely to stock and test it. Actually, if it is turned off, it is not heating up but starts to when I try to charge the battery.
I'm working at IT company, but my knowledge ends at the desktop computers actually, certainly I am not into electronics - I can tell when capacitors on motherboard are starting to go bad, but that's it. Starting from laptops, some parts are to small and prone to damage to be just opening and looking around.
I suppose if the stock kernel won't help, I will seek assistance of some service since they always give some kind of warranty for repairs. Of course, I will keep this topic updated, since there might be same kind of lost soul with the same problem.

I'm working at IT company, but my knowledge ends at the desktop computers actually, certainly I am not into electronics - I can tell when capacitors on motherboard are starting to go bad, but that's it. Starting from laptops, some parts are to small and prone to damage to be just opening and looking around.

When you are on stock kernel, test offline charging too (phone turned off, but charging). So heating problem is only limited to battery-charging electronics-kernel).
Post your results when/if it's fixed, no matter what they are. Good luck

Unfortunately, after flashing to stock R800i_4.0.2.A.0.79.ftf I still have this weird overheating issue and the battery is draining really fast. Seems like this is hardware problem, not a software one, since I tested it in many different ways to no help at all.
I will not let go off my XPlay, as I will visit service and try to repair The Best Gaming Phone to Date, though I will buy a new phone, which will be Xperia S, since I've got my eyes on it ever since I played on my friend's one - Final Fantasy 7 with OpenGL plugin in fpse looked really great, and the controls were fine for my tastes.
When I get the XPlay fixed, I will update this thread, since I like this phone and would like to have it back and running.
