[Q] GREY vs BLUE 3G 4G strength bars - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have searched and can't really find anything that answers my questions, hopefully someone here on XDA knows....
When my phone was new it had blue in the 4G and for the bars, now it is grey.
What does this mean???? and why does it change???
I found a couple other threads on various sites, but no one seems to know.....
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ga...difference-between-blue-4g-icon-gray-one.html
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=22e56edff9fcce02&hl=en
Any one here know?
rooted 4.0.2 stock rom with 4.0.3 radio.
I am going to flash back to the 4.0.2 radio to see if that is it.

I believe it has to do with the radio switching between 3G and 4G. Sometimes, for me it gets stuck, can't figure out what to do. I hate picking my phone up and it's grey.
Really pisses me off when I don't have data cause it's grey.

Blue bars indicate that you have a data connection and are connected to Google services.

Grey bars mean the opposite... you're not connected to google services or you're not fully synced. Somethings not up to date.

Yes, with the same account in my screen shot......

Does'nt matter if you added your account or not and/or enabled sync.. if your device momentarly loose connection to the google sync server the bars will show as grey. It has nothing to do with good or bad reception. Merry X-mas!

This was a huge issue for me on early builds of Cyanogenmod for the thunderbolt.

Grey indicators mean that your data connection is not usable at the moment. I see this every day on my way to work in the subway: I have a usable signal, but can't access anything on the internet. Same goes for the WiFi icon.

Why is it a "huge" issue. If data works, it works.
Does it really matter that much what color the bars are?

People here are not talking about the dark gray that shows up when you have no signal. They are talking about the light gray when apparently you have a data connection, but are not connected to Google's servers/services.
This color change was in effect since the Nexus One, and it is even indicated in the Nexus One's user manual:
Dark gray - no connection
Light gray - connection, but no connection to Google's servers/services
Green (or blue in ICS) - connection, and connection to Google's servers/services.
I haven't seen the user manual for the Galaxy Nexus, but I would have to assume that it would be indicated in there as well.

blue means you are connected to google.. to answer a later post.. i can still use data when bars are grey, just means i'm not speaking to google server atm.

When i was using radio 4503 i would not get blue icons on cellular data but would on wifi.
This also stopped my from using my Google Voice when not on wifi. Soi flashed back to radio 4.02 and everything is working as it should

So what does this mean then? In the first shot, my 4G connection is live and quite usable (10-12 megs down). Is that full strength or no strength? Does the second screenshot mean I'm connected to google "just a little bit"?

First shot has no signal and the second shot has one bar
Just bc you have no bars doesnt always mean you have zero service

Grey data bars?????

It means that your phone doesn't have a connection to the Google servers, and most likely you don't have data at all. I would return to stock and see if it still happens.

Sometimes it's good to stay away of keyboard. Especially when you have no clue on what you are talking about.
Grey data bars means that you're not signed in to Google servers at all, not just to Google Talk service.
What if in past two weeks he have saved 50 new contacts and created 100 calendar events? It's ok now, but if he will flash new ROM all these contacts/calendar events will go missing as they never reached Google backup servers...
So, there's nothing to worry about, right?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
So how can you make it stay connected? More importantly, how can a ROM change cause it to drop connection to google servers, and how could it be repaired?
Dxtra said:
What Google server are you talking about? Idiot! Since you want to call out people. The only thing you always connected to is Google talk , and C2DM (Push service) Contacts, and calendar are sync in a time interval or when you make changes and if sync fails it will retry when you get data back and has nothing to do why the bars are grey because they could still sync. Again the grey bars has nothing to do with Google sync service. Gmail use push there's no need to be connect to anything but C2DM which every phone connects to since froyo.

You don't know what you are talking about. So let me start off by saying that I don't have Google Talk installed yet my bars are still blue. The bars will only blue if you are signed into a Google account and are connected to the Google servers. If you'r phone ever tries to ping the Google servers and cannot the bars will turn grey meaning you still have data but you cannot access Google services.

I can tell you that when I have grey bars, everything related to Google stops working, and resumes working when blue data bars return. The Market, Reader, Gmail, YouTube, Listen, Maps, Talk, etc all stop working while browser and other web accessing apps are just fine. So to me, it appears Google routes there traffic differently because of authentication than other apps on the phone. So I would say it is safe to say, grey bars means no Google services.

This is all a service thing. What you are probably experiencing is your phones service cutting out and therefor you are losing connection to the internet (Including the Google services) then when you get internet back your bars are gray until your phone can confirm it is connected to Google services then once it gets confirmation your bars turn blue.

Well all Google services go over your network then go straight to Google's servers so if you cannot access Google servers you cannot access the apps that require access to Google servers. Just like if Facebook was down I would not be able to access it on my phone but everything else would still work fine.

It's not my phone signal in my case, it's actually my wifi icon that keeps going grey even though it's full signal strength and there's nothing wrong with the router or broadband service. It's the ROM change that caused the issue since restoring a previous backup restores service. It's intermittent, sometimes it'll work and other times the icon goes grey. Just wondering how it could happen and how it can be fixed.

What ROM are you having issues on? This may be a stupid question but if you have a CDMA GNexus is it possible that you are using a GSM ROM or vice versa?
I'm actually using a HTC sensation but saw this thread on tapatalk so thought I'd ask since the issue isn't device specific, it could happen on anything.
Basically I'm using an ics ROM on it which worked fine, but the most recent version is causing me to have intermittent grey wifi icon and loss of internet connection as a result. Just wondering what could be done to repair it instead of just reverting to the previous version, so thought I'd ask.

I remain signed out of Google Talk most of the time, and the bars are still blue, so the color of them has nothing to do with GTalk, as others have said, and it only deals with being connected to Google itself for the other services your phone uses.

Possible fix for grey (gray) signal bars

I have an LTE Verizon Gnex - and have rooted and installed the 4.0.4 rom.
Since then I have been plagued with gray signal bars - both WiFi and data and have not seen any fix.
What is the symptoms of grey bars - well in my case all apps (Google) worked - but i was not getting push gmail etc - just new emails when i synced etc.
I noticed that although my Google accounts all said synced - my Google Currents App - when i synced it manually never finished and the icons were white squares and not images.
So i don't know if the following was a 'currents' issue - but it could be any Google app is not syncing fully so check them all.
steps to return blue bars - I don't know which step actually worked - but this is everything I did
wipe currents data
uninstall currents
clear data in Google Services Framework
uninstall updates to google market
clear cache & data for Google Market
reboot - now i had blue bars at this point and gmail pushes worked again
update apps
install currents
set up sync
all good
this worked for me - so please report back - hope this helps someone
EDIT - just tried this on my Transformer Prime with Virtuous Rom - and got blue bars back as well !!!!!
I had Google services background disabled and had greyed out bars. Once I enabled background data i had the blue bars again. Hope that helps.
Not sure if what you're experiencing is a bug/other problem, but just to prevent more confusing posts about what the color of the signal bars means... There's a lot of misinformation about this on the net.
Blue (or Green on Honeycomb) - Active connection to Google servers, Idle.
Gray - No Internet Access, OR, no connection to Google yet.
This is explained in the Android Users Manual PDF. I can dig up the exact quote if you really need it.
The confusion sets in when you receive an email with a Gmail account, and have grey bars.
What then, is a reasonable explanation (honest question)? I have seen it reported more than once.

grey bars - can get gmails arrive when you force a sync
blue bars - as a mail arrives at gmail - it pushes a notification real time to your device
that to me was the difference
The reports I saw were not people forcing syncs...
Well for me it worked for the time being. Clearing android framework and market + a reboot. Many thanks to OP.

yup - I didn't really intend a discussion as everyone's problem maybe different - more a "this is what worked for me" - glad it did for you too.
I've seen loads of people complaining about this - and no fixes - so here's one that might work for you.
I usually toggle airplane mode and reboot.
1. Turn on Airplane Mode.
2. Reboot
3. Turn off Airplane Mode
4. !??!?!?!?!
5. PROFIT!?!?!

yup - but this did not work for me
I've been having this issue since I updated to the 4.04 radios. Loading the 4.02 radios back does not fix it. Google services does eventually connect, but it takes 5-10 minutes.
When I switch to wifi or 3g, the bars blue out immediately.
The problem only exists on 4g.
I've tried all the tips on this page, nothing helps. Any further suggestions?
Thanks
Clearing the framework and market worked for me as well. Many thanks!

Thanks, this worked for me and this was the only Google search result I found that had this information. I did not have Currents installed, so I skiped those steps; so the magic bullet to get the blue bars back may be one (or all) of the other steps.

Can you make calls or is your radio out too? IMEI still intact? I would try wiping everything and reflashing a different rom and see if the one you tried just didnt install correctly.
I am having the same issue as well (actually I was going to make the same thread) except it is only wifi that isnt working for me. Every time I connect to a wifi network the signal turns grey not letting me use the internet. But when I disconnect from it my cell strength gets full and turns blue and I can use 3G no problem.
Any ideas people? I am currently on stock 4.0.4 rooted.
Long press the WiFi toggle in settings. When you release your finger it should take you to a screen where you can see the available networks pick one and connect. Hope that helps our even makes sense

Well for the both of you I would flash the radios again. Both sets. And if that doesn't work. I would have the phone on when it gives me gray bars make sure 4g is off and put it in airplane mode let it sit for about 20 seconds and then turn airplane off and see if you get blue.

I do remember if you did a app and system restore from TiBU, instead of just the app+data restore, it screws things up and gives you grey bars.
I am assuming you did not do that, but that has been my only experience with it.
Actually i did use tibu and when the restore is finish it asks me for a reboot and that is when it ****s up. Should i flash fresh and restore from google?

Grey bars is NOT a result of no data, and blue bars is NOT a result of having data. You can have grey bars and have data.

Please Help! Signal Problems

Maybe try to flash a different modem with the modern flasher found in the android dev section?

[VERIZON][VS986] Data Icon Appears While Wi-Fi Is On?

Mine does the same thing, but can't answer your question. The pessimist in me thinks it could be some shady trick Verizon does to seep more data out of us for overages.
Was going to post this same question, I remember on the galaxy s4 they had the caller id app causing the issue, doesn't seem to be the case this time. Also tasker can't control mobile data on lollipop anymore, so that's out of the question.

I've seen that bussiness model before. I have a HP printer at work that uses 4 cartriges that cost roughly $180 (each) HP has set it so even if you print strictly in b/w, it still applies slight C/M/Y to the mix till it depletes the other cartridges...

I had the s6 edge before this for a couple days and this phone is similar from what I've noticed some apps require carrier data to provide authentication and some phones use both Wi-Fi and lte to download faster this phone does it at times it's just not really a feature to turn on and off yet like it is on the edge.
Sent from my LG-H811 using XDA Free mobile app
I've got the H815 and can not confirm this. I never had a phone that did this, save you activated that option within an Xposed module. I did this on my Note 10.1 2014 LTE because I wanted to check the connectivity strength of my carrier even when I had WLAN enabled. But out of the box? No.
On the G2 pre-lollipop, we could change the icon set and hide data icon when on wifi.
After lollipop, it seems to stick regardless. Annoying I know.
The only downfall of the LG is the intense amount of status bar icons. I really only used xposed to hide most of those and have centerclock. Need root first though. Not sure if xposed is supprted without a custom recovery yet. They disabled activation through the app until testing was complete.

Same to me, im on T Mobile galaxy S6, i just update mine to 5.1.1 and this anoyin bug start to show.
When im on Wifi the Data icon show up randomly:crying:
For what it's worth, I set up a tasker profile along with autoinput for when I connect to my saved wi-fi access points it would turn my mobile data off. Now it's not a smooth as tasker before lollipop, but it gets the job done.
That's a Verizon thing, same appears on my Moto X. Doesn't bother me, I'm always interested to see signal strength available even if I'm using data via WiFi.
This is how every Verizon phone has been for the past few years. This is intended and I honestly prefer it.
