Hello Galaxy Nexus Xda Users!
Informations:
Here is a simple apk to odex automatically, easily and securely deodexed roms.
This apk has been coded by the famous Paul Obrien from Modaco Roms and Forums.
This guy is just a genious.
The original apk has been done for Galaxy S II but it works on Galaxy Nexus (tested working). --> Original thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1215271
Paul is even using it in his own Galaxy Nexus 4.0.4 Custom Rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487056
But I tested the apk on other 4.0.3 deodexed roms that you can find in the development section of the Galaxy Nexus and it is working perfectly (Aokp odexed rom is wonderful...)
Odexing a deodexed rom is giving you a boost in smoothness (you can see it in the launcher or in scrolling through system apps), performance and battery.
It gives you the flexibility to have a custom rom with modified system, framework and design AND all the tweaks that come with a custom rom in addition to the performance of an odexed stock rom.
To use it:
1) make sure you have a custom rooted rom / kernel with init.d support (scripts must be able to run at boot: it is a folder in /system/etc). It is very important or it won't run pre-boot scripts... Thanks to open1your1eyes0 who remarked it.
You can try this useful application to add init.d support to your ROM / kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933849
2) make sure that you don't have transparent status bar before odexing or you will loose your bar after odexing... (for AOKP users for example). Thanks to frantic912 who noticed it.
3) simply put the apk in /system/app folder with a file browser like "Root Explorer" (the folder must be in RW mode to copy the file)
4) do a nandroid backup in cwm and / or titanium backup of all your apps (even the system ones like Gmail)
5) then go to the launcher
6) tap "Odex me"
7) follow the instructions
It will:
1) reboot your phone
2) odex all the system staying on a black screen or on the Google screen a bit longer than normally (but it's normal)
3) put a ".odex" file with each app in /system/app
4) reboot again
5) go back to home
--> You will then see your boost in smoothness!
For people who are not convinced: check that: http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...e-difference-between-odexed-and-deodexed-roms
To see if it worked:
- Go to /system/app folder and see if there is a ".odex extension" for each system apk.
I attached the apk to this thread for ease of use.
Please write here your tests, opinions, questions, and thank Paul (and me for giving you this info ) for this wonderful and simple apk.
P.S. Please read reports from other users in the thread before trying the apk as some users seem to loose their status bar if they set transparency effects or some of them are having "force closes" if the rom they are using is too much themed...
P.S.2. Pay attention please, as androidphone2012 intelligently noticed, this apk can only odex *.apk files. The system framework is not odexed by it. To odex the framework too, please use the following script instead. It odexes *.apk files and Framework *.jar files too.
--> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2278586
If you already ran the apk to odex apk files, do not flash that zip: re-flash your ROM, GApps and MODs you're using and then flash the zip.
For your information, I tested the CM10.1 zip from the thread on my AOKP latest nightly build version and it worked flawlessly.
Looks cool. Nothing is attached to your post though.
Can I use it on other devices? (Galaxy si900)
I don't think this works. It rebooted and when I booted back and checked, there were no .odex files in the /system/app folder. Has anyone else got it working?
FYI, tested on 4.0.4 stock deodexed ROM.

Oups Sorry.
I was at work, I attached it but maybe when I posted the thread, it didn't put it...
I reuploaded it...
It's ok now.
Disregard previous post...
Did not have init.d support. Very important or it won't run pre-boot scripts!

You can try, it could work.
I will try this week end as I go to a friend who has a Galaxy S and I will test on his phone.
Will report after but you could do a nandroid backup, test by yourself and report here too

Thanks. I knew that. Just forgot to post it.
I modified OP to inform about that.

So apparently I spoke to soon...
The app ran this time but after the reboot and odex process, my SystemUI wouldn't load and I ended up with no notification bar up top or any soft-keys at all. Also it was back to stock wallpaper. Not sure what happened, it looked like everything went through fine but I guess my SystemUI is borked.
Recovering from backup now...
I am not sure what caused this issue. I did have modded soft-keys and battery icon however, but I don't see why this would matter if a lot of the custom ROMs have modded soft-keys anyway. I would like to point out this was on stocked deodexed 4.0.4 ROM. If this works for anyone else, I would surely like to know. MAKE SURE you backup before trying.
Thank you Flolep
It works great for me, but I don't know why Gmail disappeared. But it's still in /system/app, so I tried to install and I get this : Application not installed

It's a system app so you can't "install" it. It has to be flashed into the ROM. I have a feeling this app is not exactly the most reliable in working with all the apks.

Well. I didn't have any problem with it... Gmail was still there and my framework and system ui didn't have any problem after reboot...
I tried with modaco 4.0.4 rom that is near stock 4.0.4 deodexed rom and I tried with heavily customized aokp latest aokp build 25 rom, configured for my needs, battery percent, toggles, navigation controls in blue, etc, etc, and all worked seamlessly...
I add to first thread to do a nandroid backup before launching the process.

I will keep in view for this app until more success cases reported
But I definitely will try after back from my vacation, wouldn't risk to brick my device on a trip ;p
I finally found the problem...
I forgot that the custom ROM I'm using needs a sort of modded Gapps pack to be install via CWM.
I think here is the issue.
Worked fine for me. GSM GN on AOKP B25. Just make a backup in cwm before you do it. Worst case scenario: it boot loops, you pop the battery, boot into recovery and restore.
Do you know the muffin man?

Hey guys, I come from the EVO 4G (supersonic) forums and have experienced this unclearable, unfixable, *86 PhantomVoicemail issue enough, when running AOSP/MIUI/Sense 3.0+ ROMs to know how annoying it can be. A fix in the Phone.apk smali has been found for this and I'd be glad to fill requests.
Dj21o has brought it to my attention that not only the EVO, but the E4GT and probably many other Sprint phones can have this issue. Not everyone can go through the trouble of deactivating and reactivating the phone to fix it permanently, so here I am, ready to fill requests for flashable zips that fix the issue. This fix is ROM specific so as ROMs are being updated the fix will be updated as well, if devs want to implement the fix into their ROMs that would also be very helpful, so just post the link to the ROM you want fixed and I'd be more thank glad to help fix the issue. Post the DL link the the ROM or the ROM thread and sit tight.
NOTE: If using an ICS ROM/Recovery then you must wipe Dalvik-Cache, this ensures ROM stability. (I usually just mod the Phone.apk right after downloading the ROM, so I usually forget this step)
I will add fixes (all are flashable) the the OP as I fill requests. Check back to see if your request has been filled.
Thanks a ton, many people will appreciate this.

Thanks! This would be great to keep alive everybody, so far I've fixed over 20+ ROM's.
Hello thanks for the fix. Would you be able to make an apk for CM9 alpha 3 that has the phantom voicemail fix but also works at 160 dpi? The one included with the rom crashes at 160 dpi. Thanks either way, if you can or you can't.

Oh, and you should also warn people about flashing your install zips on ics recoveries.
The fix you've shared are smali Java edits. Since they are, you'd need to wipe dalvik so the new classes.dex can be created. This wiping could potentially cause bricks when using any ics recoveries available right now.

I was referring to using the install zips posted in the OP. Caution should be used with these.
Manually moving the apk as you have indicated, you should also clear phone.apk data from the settings/app menu, delete the file with *phone.apk* in the name from cache/dalvik-cache, and then reboot.

Dude, I've made this mod also for several e4gt aosp roms. So has teamERA, people over at epic og cm9, and the guy over at evo3d that probably was the originator of this mod.
If you edit the classes.dex file in phone.apk, then the dalvik cache needs to be rebuilt to update for this change. It's basic android operation for deodexed files. If it works for you not to do anything with dalvik, then cool. But it's not 100% permanent fix unless that dalvik is updated.
Look, I'm glad the OP wants to help out and offer modded phone.apk here. But it's irresponsible to post flashable zip files for ics roms, for the e4gt, and not provide a warning in the OP.

That's what a reboot is for, to rebuild the cache. And everyone knows that you don't just flash the zip by itself. You have to do the complete ROM, gapps (if needed), and then the vmail fix. OP doesn't even have our phone, so don't be a jerk about it. PM him about putting in in the first post.

Hey OP, can I make one more request for when you have time. I like running my phone at very low dpi and the lowest the e4gt can go without system ui crashing is 129 dpi. Could you make a phone.apk with ghost voicemail fix that works at that low density [for cm9 alpha 3 rom]? Thank you very much. And to the other guys, you can just extract the package and then move the phone.apk using a file explorer and set permissions.

I take no credit for this modification, it is not an original idea nor does it contain original code. It's an adaptation of the modification for the GT-I9300 by wanam which can be found here. I simply made a few slight modifications to accomodate the SGH-I747.
That being said, I have not tested this on anything other than a SGH-I747, running a stock, deodexed UCALG1 or UCALH1.
"CWM" HOWTO
Download the appropriate package for your firmware (eg. UCLAG1, UCALH1)
Boot into recovery.
Make a nandroid backup.
Flash package.
Note: Recordings are saved to /sdcard/Sounds.
Also included are *-Rollback.zip files. These will "revert" or "rollback" this modification, returning you back to the STOCK Dialer (without recording). Be sure to flash the appropriate one for your firmware!
Question, where does it store the recording?

Sure. If you don't mind. Otherwise, when i get my dev box set back up, I am pretty sure I can figure it out.
Currently working on a UCALG1 stock firmware build that has all the potential of the phone unlocked (deodexed, zipaligned, BT and WiFi tether enabled, etc.) since i have only been able to find that for the previous firmware (UCALEM). Just makes it easier instead of having to flash to stock UCALG1 and then run a bunch of updates to get back. This way flash back to rooted stock with all the bells and whistles through odin without tripping the counter. :fingers-crossed:
Once I feel like taking the risk of bricking my phone, was going to work on doing the same to UCALH1 and test it out.
i flashed the UCALG1-DEODEX-EnableCallRecording.zip through CWM stock rom but with no flash counter rooted phone yet i do not see the recording feature. is there something i'm missing? any word of advice folks?
i was able to flash the tether app and debloated app through CWM without any issue; so i'm not sure what i'm missing here. thanks in advance

You CAN deodex a stock ROM, but gig would have to either flash a deodexed stock ROM or deodex your apks yourself. In order to apply custom modifications or themes, you'll need a deodexed ROM.
I, personally, run a stock ROM.. stock TouchWiz, etc, justed rooted and deodexed.

I am not deodexed. To run I simply renamed the phone apk and phone odex files in system/app folder to .old then moved the phone apk from the zip to the system/app folder using es file explorer. Rebooted .... record calls!

Be careful what state you are in when you use this. Lots of us states require two party notification to record calls (caller and called party)

Call Recording + No Increasing Ring
Attached is a CWM update that incorporates not only the Call Recording found in this thread, but also the mod to not have the increasing ringer which was by yoelsd. Thanks goes to both the OP and yoelsd and too many others that gave guides for decompiling and editing APKs... I also used the CWM zip that yoelsd gave with his update, as the update-script will remove the .odex file since the SecPhone_ATT.apk file is deodexed.
I just tested this out on my stock "Odexed" rooted SGS-III using the UCALG1 Firmware and it works like a charm. Best of both worlds. Maybe the OP can put a link in the first post to this. :fingers-crossed:

what is this Odexed and De-Odexed business? What's the benefit and why are we doing it?

Odex means there are .odex files present for an application. Example: SecPhone_ATT.apk also has an odex file named SecPhone_ATT.odex. A deodexed application basically has the .odex file complied differently into a .dex file which resides in the .apk. the purpose of odex was for speed but you lose a bit of storage and you cannot usually mod them as easy since part of the program is in 2 places. Deodexed apps tend to use a bit more memory and are not totally optimized for speed (zipalign helps with memory and speed and for the most part differences are negligible) but are the only way you can really make any changes to roms or programs.
There are plenty of resources out there that explain "odex vs deodex" on the interweb via search engine and on this site if searched.

Yup... the update that I posted is good for odexed and deodex roms since I borrowed the update-script that will delete the .odex file when you install it.
See my original post for who all I thanked for their stuff that I used. The only thing I did is take the OPs SecPhone_ATT.apk file for UCALG1 and modify it to include the no increasing ringer... there were guidss int he forums here that showed how to do it. It was easier to do that way, then to try to figure out how to enable call recording and mofiying the other APK to include it... lol
So if you used a DeOdexed rom, you will not notice anything. If you use an Odexed (i.e. stock) rom like I do, you will get a message when the phone boots that android is updating and the only file that will be deOdexed will be the SecPhone_ATT.apk file. If you are rooted, you can verify using file managers on your phone to verify that there is not a SecPhone_ATT.odex file in System/App after the update. If there is, then you can delete it (only if you actually did the update though).

Thank you guys! But all in all, it seems you have custom ROMs on your phones. I had searched the forums and had come across a phone.apk that seemed to be the answer. Now, I am not able to trace it.
Does anyone know about the phone.apk on the stock rom with the recording option?
Cheers!

Here is the one from FreeGS3 r6.
This is NOT my work!
This the stock UVALG1 Dialer app modded by uoY_redruM, dev for the FreeGS3 rom. All thanks and credit goes to him!
(Try out his rom, btw. It is awesome!)
This should work on any stock based rom though.
I'm pretty sure this is where the mod is included. Not sure right now if its dependant on another modded apk as well. Heading to work so will check later if this doesn't work by itself.

So will this not work on custom ROMs?
Its the samsung dialer so itll only work on stock based roms.
It'll likely be dependant on other parts of the touchwiz framework and is integrated along with contacts and such.
You can try it but I would be extremely surprised if it worked on anything like CM or ASOP.

Does it record on wifi calling?
That, I do not know. I don't use wifi calling so can't test for you either. I think that it would work, but you may just have to give it a test run to find out. If you do, report back as im curious about it myself now that you brought it up!

It's asking me to replace the stock phone apk. I think I have the stock one backed up in tb. Anyone have the new ota phone apk just in case.

Wait, sorry I shoulda been specific I guess! I don't think you can install like a normal app.
Use root explorer and copy the original from /system/app for your backup.
Pay attention to the permissions it has and copy the modded one over the old. Change permissions to what they were before. Reboot into recovery and clear cache and dalvik, then reboot system.
Test.

Thanks a lot Doc!
This is quite interesting! Although I have root explorer, I am terrible with the android stuff and so I am worried about replacing this apk with the existing phone.apk. (its the lack of "recovery" knowledge that scares me to go ahead)
Has anyone of you experts made the dialer work so far through this integration of FreeGS3 phone.apk on the stock ROM?
Cheers!
Another thing that I just figured - In my stock ROM, I do not have a phone.apk (attaching screenshot)
Which app should be backed up? I am guessing that the GS3 apk should be renamed as the stock ROM apk. correct?
http://db.tt/t7Ig4rsG
Edit 2:
guys, just figured out that there is actually an .apk called SecPhone_TMO.apk (kept searching for phone.apk )
so, please ignore the screenshot above!
although, will wait for someone to try replacing the stock ROM .apk with the GS3.
Worked perfect on Wicked's ROM. Have to move the stock phone APK out of the system\app directory and replace it with Doc's. Make sure to put the phone in airplane mode first.
Question - where are the recordings stored?
Thanks for the awesome mod!
They are stored at /sdcard/sounds/
Thank uoy_redrum at the freegs3 thread. Its his work not mine.
.....hope he didn't mind me sharing it like this. Shoulda asked first.
Ill check with him to be sure though.
You guys should try his rom. He's an outstanding dev and very helpful!

I wouldn't worry much about it. Especially if you make a copy of the original file as a backup on extSDcard.
Titanium backup works really well too.
Biggest thing to remember is the permissions.
If you can boot into recovery, wiping cache is no big deal at all. Wiping dalvik isn't bad either. When you reboot it'll rebuild dalvik but will use the new app you copied into system.
ALWAYS MAKE A NANDROID BEFORE ANYTHING!!!
That's the most important yhing you can do when messing with anything. It basically creates an exact image/snapshot of your current setup so you can go back to it at anytime.
Nandroid = Peace of Mind!

I got a 4.1.2 aosp browser working as it should on a UVALL4 base (required some xml and smali edits to work/display as it should, plus some edits to CSC.apk to avoid freeze ups after a data wipe). It was pulled from an AT&T SGS3 CM 10 build. Would folks be interested in that?

Oh course! Load er up! This version is working on my 4.1.2 okay although mine did freeze before I wiped cache/data. I remember this when running cm9 on my old phone (not running cm10 until its a bit more stable on our phone) and I do love having my bookmarks back in my menu instead of stretching my thumb all the way to the top of the phone (I can go one handed most of the time). Really though, not sure if it's any better otherwise. Both are fast. Sammy seems to have more options especially after some csc edits. AOSP could be faster but nothing too noticeable atm. I'll give it a few more hours before deciding. There is something scrambled in the menu probably needs a modded xml or smali edit like you mentioned but otherwise everything is perfect. Nice find, op...
Sorry for the delays there -
So this is what I managed to put together. Note that this was modified to appear correctly on a UVALL4 base (which also means it should be good on UVALK8 as I don't think much changed w/ framework-res between the two updates).
There are two flashable zips:
This one is JUST the browser.
md5: D6A0D5A932EE5B07ADEAF8C3D162A79A
This one includes both the browser and a modified UVALL4 (which again is essentially identical to the UVALK8 one) CSC.apk file. This is really only necessary if you wipe /data with the AOSP browser installed - if you don't plan on doing so or plan on wiping /system (like to flash a rom or something) right after then this one really isn't necessary. I just figured I would include it just in case.
md5: DDCD7375447E50F74C586854D32847BC
NOTE: In BOTH of these zips the AOSP browser has been purposefully named SecBrowser.apk so as to overwrite the stock one as they can't both be functional simultaneously - if you DO NOT want the stock browser to be overwritten then you'll need to back it up, add a .bak to the stock SecBrowser.apk file, etc.
Hope folks enjoy!
Also - the media preloading stuff won't work - I didn't feel like making framework edits for this so I just removed the checks for it in the browser apk. And - make sure to go into Settings > Labs and enable the Quick controls. I find them pretty snazzy.
EDIT: Saw a mistake in the zips - dunno if anyone tried them or anything, but they will work now lol

In theory yes - though the csc-included one would likely cause issues. The browser apk itself works fine though.

At laaast
Works great on my note 2
Extracted SecBrowser.apk from the zip
Renames /system/SecBrowser.apk and .odex to .apk.orig and .odex.orig
Pushed yours to /system/app and chmod 644
Then reboot , clear cache and data and reboot again
And voilà
Many thanks !!!!
Way to go downloaded 1st file and all is well on my Note2
