GN owners on AT&T. Which Baseband? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

For you guys with Galaxy Nexus on AT&T, which baseband do you have it installed? UG or stock XX? Just wondering which baseband offer best signal quality on AT&T.
I had UGKK7 up until last night and I like it overall but I just found out yesterday while going out with family in downtown Seattle area that my data connection suck. Basically it is really really slow or I get no data connection when I try to browse. At the very spot that I had very slow data connection or get no data connection error, I was able to use my wife iPhone 4 to browse internet fine. Although a little slower to usual, it was able to get on internet and browse fine.
So I was wondering which baseband you guys using on AT&T network?

I am currently using XXKK1 and have no issues.

stock here. faster down and up and the wife's iphone. make sure you are previsioned for the 4G data plan.

Not on AT&T but on T-Mobile, XXKK6 for me.

XXKK1 on AT&T with no issues.

Thanks guys. I just installed XXKK1 this afternoon. So far everything is running fine. I need to take a trip to downtown or mall setting where there are lots of people to really test this out.

Is there any way to do this if I currently have an iPhone unlimited data plan on my account?

XXKK6 and my performance dramatically increased over XXKK1.

hmm, best bet is to borrow a friend who has one of the AT&T 4G phone (inspire, infused, atrix). pop in your sim, call att to have them grandfather you to the unlimited 4G smart phone plan.

Currently using XXKK6 and it stinks over K1. My uploads are about the same, but downloads are about half.

UGKK7 right now. But these modems are region sensitive so you have to trial and error to find the best one for you.
Initially stock XXKK1 didn't give me good signal strength however data speeds were consistent within 2.0 - 2.5 mbps. With UGKK7 signal strength is a lot better than XXKK1 in most areas where I usually go (30 mile radius from Philly) however my data speeds are not consistent at all ... now I see anywhere from 700 kbps all the way to 6.5 mbps.
I am sticking with UGKK7 as it gives me the best signal (min 4 bars) and data speed (2.0 - 2.5 mbps) at home ...

That's awesome about your Dad, heck there's a good chance we've crossed paths In New Braunfels I get anywhere from 6-11 on downloads, which is plenty fast for me. Fyi, I'm actually the admin of one of the largest Texas Mason websites: www.masonsoftexas.com there are a handful of others on xda as well.

Anybody using The Ugk ones on ATT?

XXKK6 here
if you want to flash custom rom and stuff
i think u have to have XXKK6 or later baseband
tried UGKK6, UGKL1 and XXKL1
not much difference honestly
so went back to stock XXKK6

[Q] Best radio to use with Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile USA

So the official GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus (http://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html)
is supposed to have xxkk6 radio (radio-maguro-i9250xxkk6.img)
I read in another place that the Asian varian has a different radio, and the canadian varians also have different radios. So being that the GSM Galaxy Nexus is not officially in the US on ATT or T-Mobile I was wondering wich radio is best to use on the T-Mobile network?
North American code is UG, I think UGKL01 is the newest released radio.

I am using ugkk7. Look in dev section to see if there are any updates.
Sent from my Nexus in Texas.
I'm using XXKK6 - it's been working fairly well for me. Probably gonna try out one of the UG roms.
i'm currently on UGKL1, live in denver colorado (where t-mobile has 4G coverage) and i dont get any type of HSPA+ speeds, on a good day my down is only 5891kbps and my up is a mere 1243kbps (same speeds as my Nexus S).
maybe US radios are optimized for CDMA networks, i'll switch to XXKK1 later and see if it helps - anyone actually get 4G speeds yet? if so, which radio are you on?
Probably best to use a UG based radio if you're in NA. I'm on UGKL1 and it's fine. I accidentally flashed an XX radio before and data would cut out a lot...
i updated to stock 4.0.2 for tmo and i'm getting 10mps down and 2 up around my area of the woods.
kk6 radio band.

If your tower doesn't have any more capacity available, it doesnt matter what *you* do. There's only 21mbps (or 42, depending on where you live) per tower sector to go around to every user in your sector. If it's 21mbps, all you need is 3 other active people on your tower to get those speeds (factor in radio link loss too).
Long story short, not a single thing you can do to control your speeds. And judging a radio's "ability" based upon speed test results is extremely inaccurate.
And the nexus only reaches 21mbps on T-Mobile anyways so there's that. The north American radios are optimized for Canada.

If you get it on the Sensation theres no reason why you wouldn't get it on the Nexus.
I was using the KK6 radio that came with my phone (assuming it was a UK one since it had a UK style plug in the box) but within 2 days of getting the phone I had dropped signal errors where only a reboot would fix it. I moved to UGKK7 and haven't had any issues since. Pretty sure my speed is slower though (haven't testing yet) so if you have no issues with KK6 keep it.
i've been on KK6 for about two weeks now, speeds never go above 5.5down - i guess i dont have very good HSPA+ coverage north of denver. i also have to turn on and off airplane mode once a day to fix connection issues.
I'm using XXKL1. I get speeds near 5-7 Mbps. Sometimes 9-10 if I get lucky.

I'm also in Chicago on the xxkk6 radio and I never seem to be able to get above 3-5mb down and .5-1mb up. I've also noticed that it shows "3g" as the connection status most of the time, save for when it momentarily shows an H at times.
Anyone have a clear answer on what is displayed when you attain an HSPA+ connection w/ this phone? I find it weird that with the dense 4G coverage in Chicago, I can't seem to get any better speeds than what I get w/ my N1.
Cheers, dudes.

Those sound like pretty standard 4g speeds to me. On a good day I get 10mbs. It really depends on how many people are sharing your tower. People with Verizon LTE are reaping the benefits of new technology without many users.
As for the icon I believe the GSM radio switches to 3g when no data is being transferred and switches to H when active to save power.

How do I improve data speeds on T-mobile?

My galaxy nexus usually does 2.5 mb down and 1 up. It also usually says 3g, and when I start using the phone 4g "kicks in." I am using it on t-mobile right now. Is there anyway to get faster speeds?
I used to have a t-mobile galaxy s2 and would get anywhere from 6-10 down in the same area and 1 up.
Thanks.
Your experience with the phone switching between "3G" and "H" is normal and the way it should be working.
As far as speeds go, I'd tell you to possibly change radios and/or check your APN settings to see if you can improve the speeds. These are the usual simple "fixes" for data speeds.
With my experience with unlocked phones... I've tried flashing different radios and it generally improves speeds.
I haven't really had to mess with APN settings though.
So far I have tried: the stock radio that shipped with the device, XXKL1, and XXKK6, with about the same speeds
If anyone has t-mobile and can point me in the right direction for better speeds please let me know.
Also--how fast are the overall data speeds you guys get?
I'm on T-mobile with XXKK6 all stock 4.0.2 and my normal speeds are in the 6mbps down / 2.5mbps up range. My highest are about 9.2mbps down / 4mbps up.

Has it always been this slow? Maybe your data is being throttled.
No idea... I guess I'll check. It's not slow by any means though just my t-mobile galaxy s2 picked up the signal a lot better since it had nearly double the speeds? I'm in Phoenix so I generally have excellent coverage too...
I'm getting 3.5-4 down and 2.5 up with XXKK6 and franco kernel
The numbers you are getting are pretty normal for TMobile. The galaxy s 2 theoretically should get better speeds, just because its max theoretical speed is twice as fast as the galaxy nexus' on the same network. Your speeds will carry depending on where you are, time of day, etc.
I remember on previous phones including Nexus S there would be a build.prop hack to make your speeds faster. Not sure if it works for the Galaxy Nexus but here they are,
ro.ril.hsxpa=2
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=16
ro.ril.hsupa.category=8

Add those to build.prop in /system/ (may require additional tweaking since NS is only capable of 7.2 Mbps)
I don't know if anyone is still monitoring this thread, but I went in to a t-mobile store yesterday and watched a One S get 21 meg download speeds on 4g when I can't get better than 3.5 with my GN. I've tried different radios, nothing changes. As though I am throttled at 3.5- which I am not.
Any ideas?

[Q] SGH-T989D (Telus) Slow "4G" on T-Mobile

Hello all!
Noob here, first post, so first and foremost please pardon any ignorance. I did search here as well as google without finding any significant results. I appreciate anyone who takes time to answer.
I recently bought an unlocked Galaxy S2x (989D) for use here in the USA on T-Mobile. I went with the 989D and not the 989 because I'm using a grandfathered T-Zones plan.
I rooted/flashed Juggernaut 5.0 through cwm, and the phone is working fine EXCEPT my download/upload speeds are lousy. Consistently 1.5Mbps down / 500Kbps Up MAX with 800-1200 ms ping via speedtest app from various parts of Maryland (Baltimore/DC corridor) and using different servers. My N1 has always tested faster than that in the same area, which is why I'm particularly concerned.
I tried flashing Telus KJ3, T-Mo KID and T-Mo KL1 modems found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426001
But saw no improvement. I've also tried using the stock epc.t-mobile and the old internet2.voicestream APNs, with equally crappy results on both.
Is it just a matter of T-Mo having terrible speed over HSPA in this area, or is it possible that there's something screwy going on with the device/rom/kernel/radio? FWIW, calls and texts are fine, and wifi calling works as well. I've attached a few screenshots in case any of them might be helpful.
TIA!
hmm... you should read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514954
there's no spoon
highest speed i ever got was close to 10 Mbps in Canada 3G/3.5G networks
seems more like the area you live in, have poor Tmo coverage for data
That's disappointing, to say the least, especially since according to the coverage map, I'm smack in the middle of a giant blob of "4G Excellent" coverage. I'm still confused as to why my Nexus One would have better speedtest results. Perhaps HTC/Google FTW.
seriously???
Is this legit? Full 4G signal? I can't imagine how it's THIS slow. Does jugg 5.0 have any build.prop tweaks that could be farking with my data? Just threw my sim card into my N1 to compare and it's way faster.

I am also wondering about this same fact with a real Telus phone in Canada. I'm also wondering about the difference between the 3 radios that were provided with the Darkside.UCLE2 Beta 5 ROM. (Don't get me wrong, appreciate all the hard work from these guys, amazing where the T989 dev has come already!)
I tried all 3 radios, and get different speeds with each one. Blazes 4G radio I can't seem to tether, and then the T-mo radios I'm having issues with Bluetooth and even Data.
Could someone if you have a minute explain what the difference is between the radios and maybe suggest what radio would be best for us Telus users in Canada?
Cheers, TIA!

JoshD422,
I will be the first to tell you living in Toronto, that its completely unpredictable in Canada.
I've had areas if there is high use downtown I will get even worse results than that (seen a ping of over 1000ms ).
At the same time I can redo a speedtest about 200 metres away, and get results up in the 10 Mbps and pings of 45 ms. So I don't believe that part has to do with the radios but more the quality of service, and I'm in whats supposed to have the best service city in Canada.
Your problem definitely seems to be due to the T-Zones plan. I don't have that plan and I'm using an unlocked stock Telus T989D in Maryland and I get 2-4 Mbps down and 0.7-1.0 Mbps up

Yes, only "3g" icon in MD/DC area. I guess maybe perhaps this is not as fast as using the T-Mobile radio software that comes stock in the T989, but it's plenty fast for me. I don't think the "4g" capability is much faster, anyway.

I think the "4g" icon is purely cosmetic. I have an unlocked Telus T989d on Tmobile and my co-worker has the Tmobile T989 on Tmobile. We both did a Speedtest side to side and we both got ~12Mbps down, ~1.3Mbps up. My phone was showing the 3g icon, while his was showing the 4g icon. Both our networks showed up as HSPA. Both of us in our respective stock, un-rooted ROMs.
While T-Mo roms do tend to be a bit over zelus with the 4G icon, it is much faster than a 3G connection. Where I live in Orlando is a 4G area and I get over 20mbs download speeds and over 2mbps upload speeds..
Side note though.. it is funny that people still use "" or call it 3.5G when the T-Mobile network has been accepted as 4G for almost a year now .. I tried to find the artical but its being illusive today..

Officially, 4G is supposed to get 1000mbs peak download. Tmobile uses HSPA+ which peaks at ~80mbs. I think that is why people call it 3.5G or use the "4G" when talking Tmobile.

Rogers download speeds

I'm currently on Rogers Canada right now. I have the Gnex NON-LTE version. I've been doing speedtests on my device and I've constantly been getting around 250kB/s, usually less. There are a couple times where I reached 850kB/s but most of the time just 250 which is quite slow. I've tested this in open areas.
The baseband it came with is UGKL1. I've been downloading stuff and usually I get around 250kb/s or even slower.
I now switched to the newer radio UGLA4. I am getting about the same results. Once or twice I did speedtests and got 640kb/s.
My feeling is that its Rogers network that's constantly giving me poor download speeds. Does anyone else have faster speeds with non-LTE Gnex on rogers? Any solutions? I've looked around but to no avail.
I just tested mine (Rogers Network) and I was getting a consistent 1mb/s upload and download. I do however at the moment have a good quality hspa connection.

That's not the LTE version right? What baseband are you using and where are you located in canada? I'm in the Vancouver region.
I think I partially figured out the reason why I'm getting slow speeds. I'm currently using AOKP ROM (milestone 4). There's a power saver setting where if I'm idle for a certain amount time (ie 10mins) it turns my connection to 2G. Yes I set that up. Once I wake my device it turns 3G/HSDPA back on. However going into the secret menu (*#*#4636#*#*) I noticed that the preferred network type is set on "GSM/CDMA auto". This is likely the be the issue, if I want HSDPA it should be set on WCDMA. Now I've set that to WCDMA Preferred. Doing a speed test I'm getting speeds of 400-500kb/s. That's a drastic improvement. However upload remains to be the same at around 150kb/s. However keeping the power saving option it reverts back to the "GSM/CDMA auto" after idle time.
I don't think I have quite solved my issue as this device should be about to download/upload at faster speeds. I'm going to change back to my old baseband and see. Please let me know the details about your phone, thanks!
Edit: I see you're from PEI. Let me know your baseband still, thanks!
That doesn't sound like a radio problem, sounds more like a tower problem. Have you triend driving around ant testing your signals in different places? I usually get between 2,5 and 9mps in and around montreal. Where did you try? Were your four signal bars on with the H and the arrow?

Yes I have. I get about the same results. I have tried both open areas and inside buildings. I just reinstalled old radio and my speeds with WCDMA only enabled gets me about 300+kB/s.
Just to clarify my kB/s or kb/s is kilobytes for seconds (not bits).
I doubt we should be having tower problems in Vancouver though....
So I tried driving around more with the new baseband I got about 1000kB/s. Upload was still slow at around 200kB/s. Any reason why? I found some people believe that rogers caps the limit but still too low for me.
Could possibly be your carrier throttling the speed? For most users 250kbs is more than enough.
I have the gsm version and live in the UK. If I get 2.5mb download speeds over HSPA I consider it fast!

I'm on Bell, I get between 6-9Mbps down and 2.5-3.5Mbps up consistently.
Yea it's been pretty much up and down for me. Most of the time I get around 500kbyte/s and around 230 indoor. Upload is just pure crap for me outside or in. I've been getting around 150-200kbyte/s, mostly 160ish. Sometimes I even get 80kB/s. This is a problem and I don't know if its the phone or just poor coverage. I'm leaning towards poor coverage as I did manage to get a fast 900kbyte/s download and 250kbyte/s upload.
To those moving to mobilicty, honestly the coverage with them is worse. I can't stand dropped calls. I have friends who are on both wind and mobilicity and they tell me about the dropped calls. I sometimes have to make important calls and dropped calling is a nono. They can deal with it but for me I can't.
I've been with Mobilicity for just over a year now and I have never once had a dropped call. Coverage is poor though I've just never been on a call with poor coverage I guess. Basically if you stay editing the gta minus oakville you will have no problems

Thanks for the advice but I read through the thread already and it doesn't seem like it will improve drastically. So I rather not attempt to flash a modem that may cause a soft brick. My brother has a N900a and gets almost triple the speed of my lte. What gives?
I dont always get fast speeds. I'm guessing at&t phones get higher priority than other phones. There is a build.prop that you can flash/edit that may or may not work. I, myself, haven't made any mods because I get higher speeds usually. Not always. I am on a 900T but using an international 9005 rom with T-Mobile modem still. It really boils down to is the risk flashing a modem or build.prop worth it. In downtown houston I rarely dip below 10mb/s on LTE and occasionally see over 20mb/s. The congestion is real bad here so it is very often I get bumped back down to hspa. Like I said, you have to weigh the risks. I am fine with how it is working now. My post probably hasn't helped you get you where you want to go but it may help you to be content with what you have or may consider flashing an international rom minus modem and see if that helps.

I'm on straight talk att sim and it's ridiculous on an att phone I get att quality signal. But with this tmobile phone when home I can only get signal in my bed room by the window . From I walk into building calls and signal dropped dead . It truly sucks. I'm switching back to tmobile as soon as this month is over . I hate paying that extra 30 dollars but a phone is no good in one room .

I as well am on Straight Talk At&t micro sim and I get pretty decent speeds I believe Straight Talk cap's their LTE speeds at 15 down and I think around 8-9 up which ain't bad for the Chicago area. But there are times where I barely get 2 down and 4 up. I also have a Tmobile Note 3 stock/rooted using a ST sim.

The speeds are fine when I actually get a signal . Its the fact that I have dead spots in almost my whole apartment except the rooms located to front of building . It was never like this before .

Tmobile Note 3 on ATT Network
I have a Tmobile unlocked phone on ATT and I can't find out anyway to speed up the LTE. I get LTE it seems, but it cuts the speed in half compared to my girlfriend ATT variant Note 3. I tried to flash an AT&T modem to it, but then it would soft brick the device and wouldn't boot. I have tried every APN I can think of, but still no success. I have tried the build.prop, like adding the lines for faster data tweak, but still nothing is getting better. I have full bars, but speed is slow. Do you have any suggestions on what to do, b/c I am out of options. Thanks.
Add me to the list. Just switched over to AT&T from T-mobile, but get very bad speeds. The only reason why I switched over was because with T-mobile, I was getting poor quality signal almost EVERYWHERE, so I had no choice.
I'm curious; if the bands in our phones support the proper AT&T bands and we actually get LTE, it's gotta be a software issue. Modem most likely.
Yeah im sure it has to do with the way the modem is optimized for ATT's 1700 band. I'm also in the same boat and have flashed ATT's modem but it doesn't work. Others have flashed ATT modems but I dont think anyone has been able to successfully see their baseband change in the settings so no one can say whether it worked for sure. I can tell you that the bars have nothing to do with your call signal though, its just your LTE signal strength. If you really want higher signal in your house if LTE seems to drop or be super slow, you should manually switch over to use HSPA+ in your house. Its a pain...i know.
I'm hoping eventually the newer modems fix the 1700 mhz frequency optimization or some devs figure out how to successfully flash N900A modems on the N900T.
LTE speeds
I have great signal almost always it seems like. I have full bars on LTE or 4G/HSPA+, but if I put my sim card in my AT&T variant note I get at least twice as much throughput than with the note 3 tmobile. It has to be a software issue, I have tried to flash att modems with no success. Just got to wait for a tweaked modem. I have even tried tweaking build.prop file and it works a little bit but not much. It is just weird I have full bars with LTE, but I won't be able to get data sometimes, which is really weird. I think there has to be something with the signal bars showing higher dbm that it actually is receiving. Probably another software glitch. Well if anyone has any insight on this issue let us know, please been looking everywhere.
LTE speeds
I think also that the modem is not the only issue. I flashed a kernel today after being on the stock kernel on the T-Mobile and I did a speedtest and the speeds were really low. Flashed another kernel and boom faster speeds back to where I was, maybe higher, but I will monitor to see what happens. But I read that Kernels do affect data speeds sometimes. I am just going to keep looking around to see if any kernels work.

AFAIK it has nothing to do with kernel I might be wrong its just the modem

Is there any tweaks that can be done to kinda help the LTE or at least fix my signal bars showing full all the time. I am thinking it is not switching towers when it is supposed to and giving a false signal strength. Is there anything on modifying like you can on Sprint phones with dbm on wimax, where it will switch antennas.
Has anybody flashed the new N900T NE6 based ROMs / modem and seen any difference?

I upgraded the modem and bootloader to the new NE6 version. I'm on Temasek CM11. My observations:
Signal strength is slightly better. Speeds are definitely much better. Prior to the upgrade, I'd get around 6-15/down, 3/up. Now I consistently get 25/down, 10/up.

How did you get the new modem to stick? Did you do the triangle away method? If so, did you have to revert to a stock kernel first? I'm trying to upgrade only the modem and leave the bootloader as is. Is that a bad idea?

It's getting incredibly frustrating to have to repeat this a number of times. I think this morning I had to repeat it already 3 times. Please do a search; there are plenty of pointers on how to get it done. For reference, here is what I did.
