Hi All,
This is the solution to the thread CM7 with working VPN
With lots of source code sifting and debug monitoring and finding most of the problem within a specific file namely "system/bin/mtpd".
I have compiled a CWR zip file for people to flash with this file inside.
This will replace the broken file and replace it with my file. After flashing the VPN PPTP will connect and work but does have some disconnecting problems sometimes. Still trying to find out why. But at least now it will connect and work until it disconnects.
I wonder if I could get some help from more devs to sort out the stability of the connection sorted out.
Some files that need to be check
mtpd - Needed to be exchanged for Typhoon and Hyperdroid
ip-up-vpn - Needed for Hyperdroid
pppd
racoon
VpnServices.apk
Would really appriciate some logcats so that we can pinpoint where the connection is being lost.
Confirmed working: Typhoon roms. v1.0 & v 1.4
Hyperdroid from v1.4
Not working: You tell me
Other Issues: You must at least set up one VPN connection with the default android settings menu for it to export the libraries, if you are using 1VPN.
Regards,
Arne.
thanks a lot
thanks
Pleasure !!!!
thx, maestro
Really nice
arne, it's ok for you when we include it in our roms? (hyperdroid and clk cm7 tweaked)

I have check this with, TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 Nightly v3.0.4 to v3.6.9, all of them will now work with VPN PPTP.
It should work perfectly with Hyperdroid's CM7 aswell, but at the moment it doesn't. Still having to check the dependancy of the pppd file.
I don't mind if this gets included into the ROMS. But wait until I have sorted out all the bugs and it is working on all the roms.
v1.4
After some hard work the v1.4 is out and this will work on Hyperdroid and Typhoon CM7 roms. Still the VPN disconnects randomly but at least you can get it to connect.
I use 1VPN as it allows me to set an auto re connect but this is not a good solution.
Really nice. Hope you can fix the disconnects.

To repair the disconnected I need to get a few log cats together. I susspect it is a program specific command that is causing the VPN to disconnect. Pinpointing the program and command can help me repair this.
THANK YOU for fixing VPN! I have tried all day to get PPTP to work, and it worked instantly when installing your fix!

does this supports group authentication (similar to cisco client)? can it be flashed with MIUI-XJ ROM?
I have tested and can report that the connection is stable as long as its being used constantly. I have successfully streamed a couple hours of video from netflix with no interruption or disconnects, but with normal browsing the connection disconnects after a while.
Hi,
I'm currently on an AOSP ROM (tytung's NexusHD2 v3.2a). I know the thread-title says CM7, but I hope maybe I could get some help anyhow
VPN is extremely important to me, I need it for support issues at work, and since support situations rarely come with a predetermed planning, access to VPN over mobile data is an absolute must for me...
Sadly for me VPN works just fine over WiFi but doesn't over mobile data, I'd rather the opposite Mostly when a WiFi is around me, a PC I could use is not far, so that wouldn't be that much of a problem. When a support issue happens at work during non business hours I'm likely neither around a WiFi nor a PC, so that's where VPN over mobile data would really come in handy
I tested loads of ROMs, AOSP and CM7 (including Hyperdroid, Dorimanx's 2.9.9, Amerciandoid...), but all have the same behaviour for me.
So to me this seems to be a general issue.
Here are the symptoms I'm experiencing :
VPN will connect fine, a ping will go through, but after a certain volume of data goes through the tunnel (really not much, less than an initial VNC frame, so after just a second or so), it will brake, no data going through but stay connected as far as the notification of VPN shows.
And it's a question of data volume (traffic) not time, I left it pinging for over an hour, and it was still pinging, but ICMP packets are really tiny. After that I tried accessing a Windows share on the other end of the tunnel through filemanager, it showed the 1st level of folders, I could drill to one folder deeper and than it broke off again
Is this something you've experienced as well ... ?
I tried Dorimanx's v2.7 kernel on NexusHD2 ROM installing VPN patch (I suppose it is the 1.4 patch in the first post that is installed since Dorimanx gives credits to Arne182), didn't help either.
I wasn't really expecting this to help, since his ROM 2.9.9 also has the fix, and it behaved just the same...
I'd be thankfull for any clue pointing me in the right direction !
JP.
This thread has not been updated for a while so I am unsure if the problem has been resolved for good or not.
Anyway, although I don't know if the stability is related, but there used to be an Android-bug which caused disconnections. You could avoid it by disabling password-encryption.
see this post of mine:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9579628&postcount=2
Tested with l2tp and I can report that l2tp is way more stable than pptp! Been connected for hours, with periodically Internet use.

Ciuld the problem be with the service provider? Maybe they are cutting you off or something?

Thanks for testing, I still have not found the time to get into the code, but at least I know that the l2tp is more stable.
With 1vpn you can set up a ping rate so that the connection does not time out, but timing out connections doesn't even come close to why it is disconnecting.
Hey guys I am having problems with the wifi hotspot on my Nexus with my Mac. It will connect fine but after about 5 min the internet will cut out but still remain connected. Have no problems with my iPhone 4 from work so it is something to do with the phone. Any ideas on how to fix it? Very frustrating.

Are you on 4.0.1? I heard that .1 has some kind of issues with tethering taht were solved in newer builds. Did you try to tether to some other computer?
Yeah I am on 4.0.1. Have not tried other computer. Have found turning location services off fixes the problem. Is it hard to flash to yakju build so I can get 4.0.2? Is there any way to do this to void my warranty?

IMHO this whole yakju-better-than-yakjusomething is over hyped. There were threads where yakjusomething builds got updates, and yakju didn't. I wouldn't bother my self to wipe phone and flash other builds If I were you, well I'm not going to do that since I have yakjuxw or something similar It's still a Nexus, you WILL get any update as soon as it will be possible! Earlier I had Nexus S i9023 with SLCD screen (I loved that screen BTW) and I was getting updates couple of weeks after Android sites started to write about them. It looks like Google disabled updates after battery complains from users. For some time now I haven't heard about anyone getting .3 or .2 update to any SGN. Just my thoughts, sorry for little OT
Thanks again for the reply. Yeah I might just leave it as it is until I get the update. Turning location services off doesn't seem to fix the problem it is still disconnecting. Will just use my iPhone 4 for now :-(
Have now also found that I can not connect the nexus through bluetooth either. The Mac won't even recognise it. Any way around this? Grrrr

Thanks mate . Bluetooth is working ok now. Have found an app called wifi hotspot which seems to be holding the connection.
im also having the exact same issue. i'm on att. running an AOSP custom 4.0.3 Rom. I tried using att's tether apn and it keeps reverting back to Cingular 410, however i dont believe this is the issue, i think its related to the OS itself. is it Mac related? i have no other computers to test it with :-/
Maybe this: https://plus.google.com/103583939320326217147/posts/1Yy1jb9z4TA will help? In the post there is a zip for mac
Hey mate thanks for the link unfortunately it doesn't make a difference and for some reason the net won't work on wifi hotspot at all now. It connects but that is it :-(.
I didn't have time to really look into it, but I have some idea. Can you try how will it work when you disable security in settings? I mean make it an open network for, a second and try some browsing
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
that seemed to work on my nexus one and iphone 4 when i tethered. tried it with my gnex, same results, still showing connected, but no internet access after 5-15 min. i checked the status log of wifi tether for android, as it was doing the same thing with this app, and the it showed the wifi interface disconnecting by itself, i didn't do anything. Definitely OS related. Interestingly enough, this has happened both on the stock kernel and this franco 9.2 i'm running right now. Likewise with stock rom and this my current rom. so who knows.....very annoying though. :-/
Ok, with the network open on the Nexus the connection is fine on my Mac. As soon as I enable security though I have problems. Thanks heaps for the help so far but is there any solution available for this? Not real keen on leaving my connection open.
Sorry to bump. I'm having this issue as well. Verizon Galaxy Nexus on 4.0.2. My MacBook Pro connects to the hotspot fine and works for a bit, but then stops working. I can run network diagnostics to make it work again, but I have to keep doing that every 5-10 minutes or so and it makes it too annoying to use.
My iPad 2, iPhone 4, TouchPad, and mom's Windows laptop works just fine and never have these issues. It's only my MacBook. Anybody find a solution yet?
Exactly the same problem here.. Galaxy Nexus tethered wifi macbook pro running 10.7.2. Stays connected, but stopps passing any packets. Ipad, and other devices are still connected working properly, and the phone itself can use the LTE data connection. I've tried stock 4.0.2, as well as AOKP 4.0.3 latest build.. no luck. I've also tried both the native AP and android-wifi-tether too. Any help would be appreciated and rewarded.
---------- Post added at 04:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:13 PM ----------
PS - I even have the tethering option enabled on my Verizon account... (in case you were thinking it had something to do with big red blocking data)
I am still suffering this problem too. :-(. It is a real issue when I work outside the office a lot and do not have any problems with my work Iphone 4. I found pdanet works connected by USB but you can not access secure sites on the free version. Is there good alternative to pdanet?
hey guys. i now use an open network when i tether. it seems to keep a stable internet connection (packets transferring). the longest i've maintained a working tethering connection has been 2 hours....so it seemed good enough for me. Let me know how u guys fair if u do try an open network. still a weird issue imo that doesn't have too many solutions or even suggestions in the xda community (probably cause not many are tethering?). gl.
Hey, when I put my phone to an open connection mine is stable too. Must be something to do with the security. Wish there was a solution, I can't keep mine open the whole time :-(.
Anyone found a fix for this yet? Just about to return mine, tired of it not working. Have updated to 4.02 and my Mac to 10.7.3
I have a Verizon Samsung Fascinate phone and an Acer A100 tablet. My tablet locks in on the wi-fi signal generated by the the Fascinate's Mobile Hotspot program with no problem, however it does not even recognize the wi-fi signal generated by Open Garden Wi-Fi program.
Does anyone know what the Mobile Hotspot program has that Open Garden Wi-fi program does not?

If by Hotspot program you mean the carrier loaded one, then this makes sense. This tablet only supports a specific wifi range (called ad-hoc I believe? Correct me if I'm wrong here) and thats the signal type the default one gives off. But OpenGarden uses a different one (called ad-poc I think, again correct me if I'm wrong) and the tablet doesn't support it. So your solution would be:
1.to try the beta version of the normal wifi tether app (the one that opengarden is built off the sources of, you know the one.) and see if that fixes it.
2. switch to an AOSP rom, and use the built in tether from that. Its a known problem with older android devices and mobile hotspots.
The Evo Shift gives off the correct one with both AOSP and near stock roms, as its a newer device, so I'm good there, but you'll need to do one of the above fixes. Sorry about that.
Infrastructure vs. ad-hoc
Minor correction (I think). Tablets/mobile devices out of the box support infrastructure network connections. In order to tether you either need to broadcast that mode or modify the wpa_supplicant file on the device to allow it to identify and connect to ad-hoc connections.
I have never heard of ad-poc.
The beta version of wifi tether supports infrastructure on some devices, so some people are able to use it. Best bet is to, like the above poster said, is to load an AOSP rom on the phone and use the built in hotspot. There is an official port of CM7 for the fascinate and I know that has built in infrastructure hotspot.
Thanks for reply. It seems to me if the native or bloatware program that comes with the phone can generate the correct frequency to work on our tablets without the need for any rooting or supplicant files or whatever they are called then why can't a program be written for the market that generates the needed frequencies since it is obvious it is not a hardware issue.
If my opinion sounds dumb due to ignorance on my part, I apologize. However if someone that knows can tell me why it cannot be done I would be grateful.

Not sure, might be because the files neccisary aren't open source, or no one has rewritten them for the facinate. I still think your best bet is AOSP, but you can try getting the apk off the wifi tether Google project page. Could be solved by the newest beta of that, cause it might have been fixed in that new version.

Thank you for the information, WiFi Tether 3.1 beta6 is the one I used and it works perfect on my Acer A100 tablet, no rooting or messing with the tablet involved. I get lousy 3g signal inside my home and I was was still able to watch a movie on Netflix from my Fascinate tether. It also works fine on my laptop. Thank you for all the help, I'm a happy camper.
Is anyone else experiencing this? This has happened to me with a couple of different roms; sfhub's rooted FF18, datajosh's FF18 rooted deodexed rom, and PhantomHacker's ICS FF18 Blazer rom. After I flash a custom recovery like agat's or chris41g's my wifi start not working properly. It will connect fine and work for a little while. I haven't quite pinpointed when it stops working, but after sometime the wifi will just stop bringing down data. This may be happening when the phone goes to sleep. Regardless, it will be connected to the router, but no data is flowing. I need to turn off and then turn the WiFi back on to get it working again. I've tried changing the wifi to disconnect when the phone is asleep, that sort of fixes things, but I'd rather have my phone always connected.
So, do other experience this? Is this a common problem I just have to deal with? Is there a thread somewhere that I'm missing that will help me fix this?
Right now, I'm running an the AOKP milestone 6 rom that came with the TWRP custom recovery and wifi is working properly, but I'm thinking I want to go back to a TW rom but want to figure out this WiFi issue. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!
I'm having the same problem, but only on my home network as far as I can tell. I found a thread elsewhere that proposed it was a problem with using WPA PSK encryption on 802.11g networks and a bug with ICS. The suggested solution was to change your encryption to WPA2 PSK. I did this and thought it fixed the problem, but it has returned a day later.
This doesn't happen when I'm at work, so I think it is some setting on my home network that ICS doesn't like.
I also experience this problem. I'll try messing around with my router tonight. I feel like I also don't have problems at school. So its worth a shot. I'll let you know how it goes.

So, I actually wasn't able to mess around with my router last night. But I'm wondering if this could be a router issue and not a security issue. Out of curiosity, what kind of router are you using? I'm using an old WRT54GL that I really like and suits my needs fine. I just can't believe out of everyone on XDA with an E4GT that most everybody isn't running WPA security of their routers. Similar to you, when I'm at school I'm not experiencing this issue. I'm wondering if I should buy a router from Walmart or something and see if it fixes the issue, return it if it doesn't. Thoughts?

I'm experiencing the exact same issue after loading the FF18 OTA update from stock recovery. Factory reset after update did not correct the issue, Sprint support has not been overly helpful- and went as far to say that correcting the issue may require replacement of the phone, and that I shouldn't accept the ICS update on the new phone if I go that route (not doing that).
Possible Solution
Okay, today I swapped out my wireless router with a dual band wireless N router from netgear. I've had it installed for a couple of ours and so far my WiFi on my phone is working as it should. I've made no changes to my phone. So, this may be a router issue. I don't know anything about hardware, or why this would be happening, but this may be a solution. I'll post an update if the WiFi ever acts up again.

I apologize for resurrecting this thread but, for posterity, i'm also running a WRT54GL v1.1 and have the same problem on two different E4GTs running FF18. I have tried the 4.30.15 cisco firmware after factory reset along with tomato 1.28 (with different SSIDs), both had the same issue (i.e. wifi seems to 'hang' after a few hours. the notification bar shows the wifi signal strength, as well as being connected, but unable to do anything online. this issue only appears to happen when using this router.), which suggests a possible hardware incompatibility. the current fix is to diable/reenable wi-fi, which will work again for a few hours. The router works perfectly will all other devices.
I will poke around a bit tonight and post results if I find anything
UPDATE: I apologize for the wait, but may have a workaround. The phones have since been updated to FH13 and both still had the same problem.
I'm currently using Linksys/Cisco firmware Ver.4.30.15 for my WRT54GL v1.1. In the wireless security section of the web interface, I have changed the security type from WPA2 Personal to just WPA Personal. No other settings were changed. Just to rule out a DHCP issue, I set an IP statically on the phone but this may not be necessary. Since the change I have not had the "connected but not really" problem as described above.
I have had a limited time to test the change, but if the problem persists at least it's an improvement. I will keep the thread updated with what I find.
Yes please keep us posted if you find anything with the settings on the router. i have the same router as you ther WRT54GL and I am experencing the same wifi connected yet disconnected bug. Have to turn it off then back on to make it work right.
I have the same issue. Not sure what the issue is but I never had any problems on Gingerbread.

+1 I too never had any issues with GB 2.3.6. The wifi problem started with ICS FF18 and now too with FH13
So I have tried to trace my issue to it's roots and after a lot of investigation I decided to make this thread.
The issue:
When connecting to home wifi network I get "Authentication error occurred" even though it's the good password.
It first occurred on stock 4.1.1 ROM with stock Kernel even before rooting. What's more interesting is that I've successfully used the same wifi network for around a month. Other devices connect just fine, no settings on the router changed when this started happening. Didn't fiddle with any settings on the phone neither. I can connect to free wifi APs just fine.
What I've tried:
Dialing *#0011# and from service mode disabling wifi power saving feature.
Using all possible encryption combinations on the router (Open - no password, WEP, WPA-PSK AES and/or TKIP, WPA2-PSK AES and/or TKIP or both WPA and WPA2 at the same time), switching channels, disabling 802.11n mode.
Using some modded wpa_supplicant files from this thread.
Using a bad password just to get a different error.
Downloading some other wifi connectors from the Play Store including Wifi Connection Manager which claims to "Fix device Wi-Fi problems." by cleaning the stored wifi config files and maybe something more.
Flashed Omega v10 ROM with Perseus kernel.
All these things and basically any combinations of them worked to no avail. And the only thing that helped was being very close to the router. That way I manage to connect but moving a couple of meters away, like to a nearby room, and it starts giving the same error even though the network strength is still full at that point.
My thoughts:
I saw a similar issue at a couple of places including a similar thread last active dec 23rd, Android issues on code.google.com and androidforums, but no solutions found there worked. Also comparing how my old original Note and an even older LG P500 perform, the wifi signal is obviously weaker on the Note 2. My area is not heavy on wifi networks, so my guess is there's something wrong with wifi drivers or configuration. Sooooo.... What can I do to remedy this issue and also is there any way to beef up my wifi in the process?

My thoughts:
I saw a similar issue at a couple of places including a similar thread last active dec 23rd, Android issues on code.google.com and androidforums, but no solutions found there worked. Also comparing how my old original Note and an even older LG P500 perform, the wifi signal is obviously weaker on the Note 2. My area is not heavy on wifi networks, so my guess is there's something wrong with wifi drivers or configuration. Sooooo.... What can I do to remedy this issue and also is there any way to beef up my wifi in the process?

I had somewhat the same issue. Autentication error.Even though WIfi worked properly on my Galaxy y.
From v9, I flashed v6 Omega and then everything was working fine. So go ahead and flash Omega v6.
And after that did you go back to a Jelly Bean ROM?
Edit: at first I figured omega v6 wasn't JB, but then I checked... For the peace on my mind I'll try flashing Omega v6 later today.

When I went to v6, all was working well. But when v10 was released,i flashed it,hopiing that the wifi issue is not there but alas same result.
Before flashing,I made a backup of my wifi folder found in root folder /etc/wifi .
After flashing v10, and overwriting the wifi folder with the one that i had backed up, the issue was solved even on 4.1.2 for me.
Worth a try mate.
Do report back.

Sounds very interesting. Will report Dunno if an upcoming exam is more important than solving this issue now

The curiosity will hamper your exam!
Is it today?
Well there's 24 hours left, but work and catch-up for half a year is no small feat
To follow up, did flashing Omega v6 work?
i'm really keen to know as I am having the problem currently.
Authentication Problem Wifi - solved for me
Hi folks - I had the same issue with my Galaxy Note I717 (it's the AT&T Note 1) that I got yesterday. I have no problem with my T959 Vibrant to connect to my router at all. But the Note always gave me the authentication problem. So I took it with me to work today and no problems at all to connect to Wifi over there - everything just worked fine.
Back at home - same issue. So I was thinking about to reset my router when I saw this button on it's side and I remembered that I had read something in the settings of my phone.
So that's what I did: When choosing the network on the phone I went to advanced settings. WPS - here I choose Push Button. After that I pushed the button on my router and voila everything worked as supposed.
After switching Wifi off and back on there was no authentication problem anymore. So to confirm the whole thing I let the phone forget the connection and I had the same authentication problem. After choosing WPS "push button" and pushing the button on the router everything worked again.
I don't know - maybe it's just basics for a lot of guys here, but I was glad to figure that out by myself and maybe it helps someone else.
In the case that it might be important - my Note runs stock ICS 4.0.4, stock kernel. is rooted and unlocked. The Vibrant runs ICS Passion V13.1 and Kernel Kiss Yum Yum Good #2. The router is a D-Link DIR 655 Wireless N
Following up the thread:
No, flashing omega v6 didn't work for me.
What I found out is actually 5 GHz band routers work just fine (for example at my university) and all the 2.4 GHz ones give the same error if I'm not close enough to them (something like 5 meters with straight visibility and 2 meters behind closed doors with my home router Comtrend WAP 5813n).
I have called Samsung's Warranty Center to ask for assistance and since we don't have official Samsung service centers in Lithuania, they told me partnered service centers might just return the phone to me as it is and so they would call me when they found out more about this issue (that was almost 2 weeks ago). Will call them again tomorrow and will post any updates if the story develops.
EDIT: After talking to them they apologized for taking so long and assured me I was not forgotten and the issue was forwarded to UK because they have no records/info about it here in Lithuania. Strange thing is I still have my phone, they didn't even wanna check it out.
Note 2 wireless issues
Lads I tried EVERYTHING to get connection working after it dropped on me after a month. Done everything I have read on every forum. EVERYTHING. All other Samsung devices work fine except this note 2! One other odd thing I discovered. It connects fine to any modem or roster fine then when try again on each it won't. You tell me guys? I had it with this issue. Help before I chuck it in Port Phillip Bay!
Hello Jumbo,
i had the same problem and read a lot threads about this error message.
For me it looks like not all who get this error have the same problem.
Some wrote that they fixed it by
- exchanging the wifi folder with the one from 4.1.1..
- flashed a different kernel
- downgraded to 4.1.2
- changed wifi energy saving stuff
- messed around with their routers
and so on..
I also did all this stuff but with no success..
In my case I figured out that
- the same problem exist on 3 different routers (so it couldn't be a router issue)
- the wifi speed (when I sometimes got connected) kept falling from 65MBit down to 5MBit
and by having a wifi connection, I couldn't reach any webpage.
- then I recognised, that I only had a working connection, when I was close
to my router, like 1 or 2 meters without anything between us. In this case
I had no problems with authentication and to surf on the web.
I decided to send my Note2 in for a repair, and guess what... They changed my
Mainboard and since then, everything is back to work..
How long did it take for the repair? I can't imagine being without my phone for an extended period....
I know, it's an addiction, but I'm ok with that..
Steve
I have an identical issue with my S3 GT-I9300
For a totally reliable wifi connection, I've had to site the cradle for the phone on top of my router!
Am out of warranty, so if anyone finds a fix for this that does not involve a mainboard change...
(My first post on this site- I just wish it had been a fix rather than a query)

Sorry for the late answer.
My repair took 1 week...
shipped it to w-support on Monday and got it back Saturday.
I was really happy with w-support here in Germany.
I've reset my device to stock and so far it's been sitting @ warranty center for a week, no answer about the roots of the problem yet..
May have found a solution
Hi,
I had the similar problem. With me it started happening after I changed to a Zyxel modem. After some investigation I noticed that in the Zyxel the default gateway is set at 192.168.1.254 whereas most other brands use 192.168.1.1.
Have an inkling that Android doesn't play nice with non-192.168.1.1 gateways.
So changed this in the router settings.
To be sure I also allocated fixed IP on the LAN to my devices and made sure that in the advanced settings of my WiFi network on the Android device I made sure the primary and secondary DNS addresses matched those that the router uses.
Oh.. And to top it all off I fixed the broadcast channel of the router to channel 11 (Probably best you use an app like WiFi Analyser from the Play Store to find the channel that works best for you)
This seems to have solved it for me for now. (I know, not a very scientific method, but got fed up with trying to isolate the culprit)
BTW. Am running (1) Galaxy Note on latest stock ROM (rooted though) (2) Galaxy Tab 2 7" (stock JB ROM - non rooted).
Hope this helps..
Sounds so strange that gateways and channels did it for you. I've tried to change channels on my router with no results. Also I have tried way too many routers before I decided router settings were not a problem. I guess we may have different kind of hardware/software faults resulting in same error message.

I know. It is weird.
Mind you only a few hours have passed since my changes. I'll keep an eye on it if it reverts to it's old state.
Ok.
Had the same issue again this morning, but oddly enough, once it connects, it stays connected. Also when the phone is put to sleep.
