[Q] Does anybody else have these lag issues? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I can't figure out whether I had this lag problem when I first got my GN. 99% of the time my phone runs absolutely beautiful, perfectly smooth scrolling through menus and on the homescreens.
The only two places I do encounter lag are when I press the home button if I'm on a screen other than the main one (eg I'm on the left side screen and press the home button to return to my main homescreen it seems quite stuttery). And the other place is in the settings menu, when selecting any of the options it lights up blue but when it returns to it's normal colour before going to the appropriate setting it seems quite stuttery as well.
Neither of these are massive issues obviously, but I'm just interested in whether this is standard and it's always been like this or if by flashing other ROMs to my phone (currently running ARHD 2.1.2. but I've had these since I flashed the first version at least) I've caused this behaviour.

I'm rooted but running completely stock and I have lag issues occasionally as well. Mine occur around 30% of the time.
I'm hoping a software update can address this, because when all of the Nexus reviews were going up a month or so ago, there were no complaints about lag. At that point in time I'm fairly certain the reviewers had Android 4.0.0 installed.

[Q] Should I return my phone?

Hi I bought my GNex in January and lately it's been having more and more issues.
Here's a list of what happens so far:
1) Low battery life - about 6-8 hrs with minimal use
2) Low 3G and 4G signal - usually 1 or 2 bars
3) Camera sometimes becomes unresponsive requiring a reboot to start up again
4) Sometimes the phone will be unresponsive in lock screen requiring to reboot by removing battery
5) A lot of apps become unresponsive or crash - happens daily with 10+ different apps
6) Sometimes my soft key buttons (back, home, windows) buttons will disappear and not come back (happened while using GoSMS)
Verizon told me that the new update will be coming out this month. Do you think it will resolve all of these issues? I'm hesitating with getting a refurbished phone. Has anyone had any issues with refurbished ones? Thank you to all who reply.
1) Low battery life - about 6-8 hrs with minimal use
This is pretty much the only downside I see with the Nexus. It's a great phone, but the battery life is terrible.
2) Low 3G and 4G signal - usually 1 or 2 bars
I'm running the 4.0.4 radios, which have a (cosmetic) fix for this. 3G data always seemed to work fine for me with only 1 bar, though.
3) Camera sometimes becomes unresponsive requiring a reboot to start up again
This happened to me a few times with the stock ROM. The current ROM I'm running (GummyNex, compiled from source) is based off of Android 4.0.3 and has never done this.
4) Sometimes the phone will be unresponsive in lock screen requiring to reboot by removing battery
See previous answer.
5) A lot of apps become unresponsive or crash - happens daily with 10+ different apps
Probably the apps' fault.
6) Sometimes my soft key buttons (back, home, windows) buttons will disappear and not come back (happened while using GoSMS)
This has happened, but it seems like if you just rotate 90 degrees one way and then back, you can usually get them to come back.
So...to answer your question, even Android 4.0.3 is a decent improvement over 4.0.2 in terms of stability. The forthcoming update is Android 4.0.4, IIRC. There's no point in getting a refurbished phone right now, since you'd still be running stock 4.0.2.
Everything you mentioned can be fixed with a custom rom, kernel, and baseband/radio flash.
If you don't want to do that than.... Yes return the phone.

question, nahingp
1)
You should look around for apps telling you what causes this battery drain. You might have installed apps preventing your phone from going to propper sleep
2)
I guess this depends on where you live and move. Is your network also this slow?
3)
Now this is a reason to give back the phone! It seems to me like it is a guarantee issue!
4)
See previous answer (I am not a friend of custom roms and flashing )
5)
Could you name one or two of them?
6)
Maybe after all you first should try to do a reset sounds a little bit like a software error...

[Q] Touchscreen Issues

So for the entire year and a half I have had my T-mobile G2 (aka HTC Desire Z) my touch screen has had issues.
It seems to happen mostly when I am doing something memory intensive, but not always.
My screen either goes completely unresponsive to touches or acts like only 1 touch is performing “pinch to zoom”.
To remediate this issue I have to hit my top power button to turn the screen off and then back on, but this is just a temporary fix.
It does seem to last a little bit longer before starting this behavior if I do a complete reboot.
My phone is still usable but this is an ultra-annoying issue that I believe should be able to be fixed. I have used task killers and messed with the performance options in cyanogenmod to no avail.
This has happened on the stock ROM and every other rom I have ever run. I am currently on Andromadus Alpha (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1349864).
Thanks for any help in advance.
I have the same problem since its new.
It does it when the screen is dirty too.
Makes a huge difference when I'm using my old moto milestone, the screen is more responsive.

[BUG] Screen Sensitivity Issue-Lag (4.0.4-4.1.x)

Problem summary
Known cause (might be others): selecting an app from the Recents list (Task Switcher)
Temporary fix: turn the screen off, then back on
Workaround: avoid using Recents list (you can use a 3rd party task switcher instead)
How to test: open Messaging, hit Home, hit Recents, select Messaging from the list. Your screen will be less sensitive until you turn the screen off and back on. You can view the pressure by going to Settings -> Developer Options -> turn on Pointer Location. This will allow you to see the Prs of each tap in your status bar. Normally your lightest taps that register will show anywhere from 0.28 to 0.32. However, after this bug is activated, you will mostly get values over 0.40 for your light taps. This is actually a very noticeable increase, especially when trying to type quickly.
Please report any other known methods to "activate" this bug. After re-assigning my Recents button to a 3rd party app (I'm using Simple Task Switcher), I haven't seen this bug at all. It seems that a couple of people have seen it produced by something other than Recents, but they haven't narrowed it down (or reliably reproduced it on purpose).
Please star this issue officially so Google can fix:

Hehe yes this s gonna be a difficult one to confirm. But it is definitely not dirty hands. To clarify, a quick press of the power button to lock then unlock completely fixes the issue. Same fingers suddenly register perfectly. This is driving me nuts as the phone is not even usable right now. Literally.

ios 6.2 doesnt get issues.
I don't know about your other experiences, but as far as the browser goes I have the same scrolling effects as you do. I think this is how it is meant to be. They tightened the scrolling a lot and I kinda like it. Before one small flick would send me across the whole page, which was kinda annoying. Just my preference.
I'm not having this problem. It would drive me crazy too. Been using my phone alot over the past two days and I didn't run into this problem even after almost 1h of continuous surfing. Also a few checkpoints of Shadowgun didn't trigger it.
But you can confirm your problem if you enable "cursor position" in the dev options (hope that's what it 's called in english). "Prs" and "Size" should need a lot more than around 0.30-0.40 to register your touch if you have the problem you describe.
I am sorry that you're experiencing this, but 4.0.4 has nothing to do with this. 4.0.4 is just software, Galaxy Nexus is not a pressure-sensitive device, it is merely touch-sensitive. Which means that software gets an analogue signal from the touchscreen, either 1 or 0. It has no 'range' of sensitivity, so it cannot decrease in sensitivity in software (if it did, then it would not work at all).
This is entirely hardware issue and I suggest either making sure your screen is clean, your screen protection thing (if you use one) isn't acting up or if your hardware has become faulty (have you dropped it recently?).
If problem persists then return under warranty.
My wife had this issue once.
It was the third party launcher she was using.
I don't think its a matter of touch sensitivity dropping, its a matter of the system just being too slow to really work right.
It was ADW EX, fwiw.

Lol that is hilarious. You forgot the step where its the OS that actually processes the input data, so in that process, a ton of problems can arise.
And personally, since 4.0.4 I have also been experiencing a "similar" issue. When scrolling down (and only down), I experience a kind of "lag" like if it only registers the swipe movement half an inch lower. Its not a big deal, but still an issue.
Edit : What he explains as "pressing very hard" is most likely the fact that when you press harder you actually cover more surface, so the amount of extra input data can definitely impact the behavior.
I had issues for a few hours after the 4.0.4 update, where my softkey buttons weren't responding. Thankfully, it seems to be fine now, but it was a cause for concern.

Thank you my friend, I should have thought of this; now I have numbers to confirm this. So with cursor option enabled I can get down to 0.30, managed 0.28 once. However when the bug starts, I can confirm that I cannot get below 0.60. It just refuses to register that input for some reason.
I lock the screen, 1 second is all it takes, and now it registers down to 0.30 again and all touch works properly. Its almost like some type of memory leak issue is the way it feels to me. It only starts happening after a few min of use.
Its definitely an issue now that I can see the pressure numbers. The question is what the hell can I do about it. I flashed aokp29 with the latest 4.0.4 ota merged in, problem still occurs. I'm gonna try stock 4.0.2 or 4.0.1 just to see. Thanks.
I have never had much luck upgrading Linux versions. That's why I start fresh every time with Android. Lol

Before I start digging, anyone know specifically which driver controls the touch input? I'll try looking thru github.
Also I was on stock 4.0.1 prior to this. So this could be normal behavior for everyone but everybody is used to it since nobody stayed on 4.0.1 like me. Cause I can easily say this is difficult to notice if you aren't paying attention. The question is, why does locking the screen temporarily change it back...
I can confirm some of what you are saying..sometimes when I'm browsing the scrolling tightens up..I lock the phone then unlock it and it is smooth again..doesn't happen all the time tho..doesn't bother me but I've noticed it

I can also confirm. This morning I found the Swiftkey was lagging on Facebook. Something like the phone did not receive the touch. Then I rebooted and now it is ok.
I did not get this issue on 4.0.2 and I don't install anything new on 4.0.4.
The way I installed 4.0.4 was from the official factory image, so my phone is fresh! I reinstalled all apps manually as well. Nothing fancy apps.
I know this is my first post, but I can definitely confirm this issue.
I use my Galaxy Nexus for development, so the screen is always on. The sensitivity goes down very quickly.
My phone was an International GNEX that I loaded the US firmware on and then I flashed the OTA 4.0.4 update.

Just to point out, the phone is all digital. It does not get an analog signal from touching the screen. Also to that point you said analog but then described digital with the 1 and 0
Has anyone affected tried going between 4.0.2 and 4.0.4? To check the possibility of a driver or some related value changing.
Also, if not fixed by going back to 4.0.2, this could be due to current leakage from somewhere causing the touch to not work properly. I've seen it on other capacitive touch devices, though mainly when a non-compatible charger is connected. When you shut the screen off, the charge causing the problem/interference with the touch is temporarily dissapated, but then comes back after you use it again. Probably very unlikely in this case, unless Google changed something in the touch driver that makes it more sensitive to interference, which in turn messes with actual input from fingers.

Its possible. I was on 4.0.1 so perhaps this issue originated in 4.0.2 but I never noticed since I didn't update then. I can add that I did multiple wipes and clean flashes, and also tried both aokp 28 and 29 (new 4.0.4 ota merged), and happened on both.
I'll post what I just sent to arbiter which gives more insight.
From my extra testing under normal use my light touches register 0.28-0.33. Especially on swipes, the end of the swipe registers 0.28 as the finger travel breaks contact with the screen giving that swipe extra input which pushes the swipe motion further extra boost. When the bug starts the touch swipe won't even break 0.38-0.40, and that extra swipe data is lost resulting in the end of the swipe data points being excluded and swipes travel half the distance.
This gets exacerbated on the keyboard when fast typing light pressed. Its so bad it frustrates my face off cause typing just ceases to be possible. Such a difficult issue to diagnose.

[Q] What kind of lag/issues, if any, have you been experiencing?

As this is my first Windows Phone and I wasn't really sure what to expect when it came to fluidity, I was pleased with how smooth everything is. However I've begun noticing a decent (read: annoying) bit of lag when I open up the messaging app and begin typing. The letters take a second to appear and autocorrect is slow if it comes up at all. The lag only last maybe 3-5 seconds but annoying none the less. I've also had some rather bad experience with laggy apps, with Skype being the worst culprit. I read good things about the recent refresh, but it's pretty much unusable for me. I've also been having issues with losing LTE and having it drop down to "4G". A simple toggle of airplane mode fixes it, but it's gone from happening rarely to happening once or twice a day now. When I do have LTE though, I have 4-5 bars constantly.
Anywho, bit of a wall of text but I just wanted to see if anyone else is having similar issues and if it's worth going to AT&T and seeing if they'll replace the phone for me as I'm still within my 30 day return window.
EDIT- Just remembered 2 more issues. Had it reboot on my when adjusting the volume and there's a weird clicking noise that happens when I swipe from the first picture in the camera roll. The phone is on silent, and it only happens going from the first to second picture. Little odd but not a big deal.

The only problem i have seen is:
When i switch off my phone and turn it on sometimes it freezes and i have to turn it of an on 2 or 3 times in order to get it working. this has been happening recently i dono whthere it is to do with some apps or firmware issue.
sometimes the touch screen also give hiccups specially on facebook app.
No other problem. coming from samsung galaxy s 2, i only miss the ability to change my homescreen every week with a different launcher and layout. The apps that i miss are Tweetdeck, 100% working Pulse, Youtube and Facebook App.
My Lumia 900 playing Angry birds is so much faster and smoother compared to SGS2.
Overall i am happy with the looks and performance of my phone.
I get that messaging problem as well sometimes where the keyboard lags and the typing noise doesn't keep pace with my inputs.
Mildly annoying and it's not constant so no big deal for me.
Sometimes, multitasking stops working and I have to do a quick power-off.
Actually, all issues are resolved with a quick reboot as opposed to a reset with my Lumia 900 which is something I can't say about my HD7.
I agree with above. The only lag I get is the occasional facebook load time lag. Some apps take longer to load than others, it's perfectly reasonable. As for overall lag, I had one experience yesterday where everything just slowed to a standstill. It was the first time I had to restart the phone, but after that, I've seen no problems. I can imagine it was a corrupt app as I had been downloading quite a bit of them that day. Coming from android for 2 years, the experience here is much much smoother. My advice, as i learned from the past 2 years, is to retrace your steps and find out when exactly it started to lag. When you find the beginning see if you downloaded any poorly rated or laggy third party app, or if you changed a seeting on your phone. If it continues to lag for no reason, you might just have a bad device. Best of luck.

I just upgraded from a Samsung Focus. My very first reaction was that the screen was slightly less responsive than the Focus, which was buttery smooth and instantaneous. It felt slightly, but noticeably less responsive. After using it for a day, I don't notice it anymore. I am sure it is there, but my memory of the Focus is not as near. As far as true lag goes, I have not experienced any after 2 weeks use, and no reboots or freezes.

I'm glad you are enjoying it but I came from the original focus myself and had the exact opposite reaction. That it was much faster and smoother than my old focus... I still have it and my kids play the old games on it so I can compare regularly and still feel the same.
Does anybody have lag when they are pinching and zooming on heavy desktops websites? i am getting a lot of lag here where my htc titan did not get that lag.
The only issue I seem to be having is when playing any kind of music or watching videos. If I touch any of the capacitive buttons, it's as if I long press them. Not a huge deal since I usually only touch the back arrow anyway, but that's all I get.
i was wondering if anyone else had this problem. My lumia has consistently not displayed maps in nokia maps or the maps app. It will show my location on a blank black or patterned screen (depending on the app). It's not a wifi or data issue because it's happened on both. It's happened five times in 3 days. Each time i've had to shut the phone off and restart it and it works again. Is this just a problem with mine? Thanks.e

Looks like today majority of Europe is getting Nougat update on HTC 10.
How is update working for you, regarding bugs and stability? I'm kinda scared of updating it, since the Nougat update ruined my Oneplus 3.
just do it. its great

So far no issues at all.

for me battery life is a little better on N
I think it's a good improvement, but I have had the occasional issue with screen touch sensitivity, for example, on page scrolling - sometimes if I scroll and hold my finger still, the page flickers up and down, and sometimes it scrolls to the start or end hyperfast. Also when using Swype, it sometimes completely misreads the initial finger movements, inserting more characters than I've passed over . These don't happen often enough to be a problem, but they didn't happen before and make me wonder if the screen sensitivity has been tweaked up a bit in some way.
Have been on N for a good 3 weeks already? Generally, the phone is performing admirably, day to day performance is faster, snappier.
However, with all the improvements being made, there are still some bugs that have yet to be quashed, mainly the in built camera app.
Right now, with the camera in Pro mode, whenever I am adjusting more than 1 variable ie; shutter speed & iso, the tap to focus refuse vehemently to work.. Also, live preview for shutter speed never goes past 3-5 seconds. In the past, when I max out the shutter speed (@16 secs) I will most definitely get a blown out image, for now, 5 seconds onwards doesnt seem to make any difference, until you actually take a shot... As a frequent user of the phone's awesome camera to take low lit shots, this is rather disastrous.
My phone is a Taiwan set, so I dunno if these issues are exclusive. Do chime in if you encounter similar problems with the camera app too!
PS: am using another photography app that does manual and RAW (manual camera) works pretty sweet!

exactly. that page flickers up and down. Scrolling in Stock rom is not as smooth as it is in LOS rom. This issue alone makes me sad every time I use my phone. HTC why you do this. No idea if it is good in MM rom. After seeing your post.. I would downgrade to 6.0 just to see how it works.
It's good, definitely more efficient but you'll not have xposed and from what I've read the likelihood is Slim that well get it, I think it's because the base has changed so much and continues to change meaning it has to be modified greatly, this is the only thing I miss. Certain devs also haven't updated their apps. For example Kodi wasn't updated, might be now but wasn't a little while ago.
Personally I think the trade off for performance and stability is worth it.. I wouldn't go back. Plus with the pixel launcher and a decent theme the phone really flies.
So far so good
No problems here, updated on Tuesday.
