Garbled fonts - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
I have been using my Galaxy Nexus for a couple weeks now without problems, but today I was havinbg porblems with signal being lost. I switched it to airplane mode, then switched it back to normal, but it would not switch back. This happened once before, and was fixed by rebooting.
however this time after rebooting, my homescreen and fonts are messed up. The widgets and icons/folders on the homescreen either have garbled fonts, or the text is missing entirely. Same thing for the icons in the app drawer.
The text within apps, such as SMS, browser, contacts, etc, are all fine.
I have rebooted a couple of times but it hasn't made a difference.
Also a file download from gmail seems to be stuck, it's still trying to download after 2 reboots, but there has been no progress...
I know I'm throwing in a few different issues at the same time, but maybe they're related, maybe they're not...
Is there anything else I can try?
My phone is running stock 4.0.1, it was purchased in UK and on O2 network. It is not unlocked or rooted in any way, and I have not recently installed any apps that might cause such problems.

Only thing I can think of referring to you to try is a "Factory Restore".
Mind you, that means it wipes everything, apps, SMS, etc (not gmail/calendar stuff tho).
Other than that, I haven't heard or have read about this problem occurring - so apart from that, I dont know what else I can suggest you try - sorry!

Thanks. That's what I feared...
I was going to try to unlock bootloader to root, so was gonna wipe my device anyway, but I wanted to wait until after the holidays season in case something goes wrong...
I will probably take it into the O2 store this afternoon to see if they have any idea
I wish I hadn't spent so much time configuring my widgets Gonna have to do it all over again

Thats where all the fun lies

Dude, don't wipe it yet!
I had the same issue after my phone died while charging and I had to pull the battery. Fonts where distorted and further reboots didn't help.. BUT:
I changed the font size from small to normal, which immediately fixed the widgets. App drawer was still messed up, but after a reboot it was fixed as well. After that, switching back to small fonts works as well!

I just started having the same issue too... and since I was setting it up I'm not sure which of the 92 apps I installed may be affecting it lol.
I can say that changing the font size only temporarily fixes the issue, and then the fonts get garbled/go black/go completely missing again.
Perhaps a font reinstall would work, and if so could someone make it into a flashable zip or provide instructions on how one would do that?
Thanks

OK, so it appears that the issue is a charging/heating issue.
I've allowed my phone to drain to 20-15% and then fully charged it the last few days to improve the battery life. The garbled font issue seems to show a few mins after the phone is plugged into the charger that came with it and the phone starts to feel warm to the touch.
The issue seems to continue until the phone has had a chance to cool down a bit (I'm guessing it's more specifically the GPU as it looks similar to an issue caused by overheating GPU in a PC).
Another thing I have noticed is that the charge went from 24% to 50% after rebooting and only being on the charger a few mins.
I'm going to charge it to 100% with the phone off and then erase the battery info using CWM and see if it'll fix that issue at least.
As for the garbled font problem I will continue to watch it, but if it doesn't clear up I may have to exchange this one at the store (although I'm not at all interested in the hassle of that option).
Please share if anyone else notices this!

This still happens even if I'm fully recharged it seems the battery isn't my problem. I'm using a Verizon Galaxy Nexus running 4.0.2 stock; I recently started to use minimalistic text and also installed Simple Calendar and Widgetsoid to customize my phone. When I was finally happy with my customizations whenever I would restart my phone this would happen

The text would be garbled and the text under applications would be black (and a bit blurry) instead of white. The only way I know how to fix this is to turn my phone off, pull the battery, and restart it. But if I restart it again after the 'fix' restart the text goes crazy again. Has anyone had this happen after using minimalistic text? Is there a permanent fix? Thanks

No fix for this issue? Could it b tm the extended battery?

My nexus kept doing that, I finally went into settings, aps, all-selected launcher and hit clear data. Had to redo all my widgets on my screens but hasn't sone it since! Just got Jellybean this morning! Hopefully won't happen again.

I think my Nexus is broken :(

So I'm having an issue w/ my Galaxy Nexus..
Brand new, couple weeks old
Playing Music, phone starts going to a loop, phone hard locks.... Screen goes fuzzy grey
Several times I've come back to my phone and it got stuck in sleep mode. Can't wake it - had to pull battery.
Once in the middle of browsing the web on HSPDA, the phone just froze and I had to pull the battery

Are you rooted?
Have you tried a factory reset?

Might be a defective phone, return and get a replacement ASAP. This isn't normal.
Phone is not rooted, have not tried a factory reset
My phone also hard licked when listening to music. It only happens when u try changing the "Sound Effects" settings in the a stock player though

My browser froze on me once and I've had to do two battery pulls due to being unable to wake it from sleep mode. The issues were weeks apart though. My first Nexus S had bad issues with freezing and I immediately replaced it but this phone isn't showing any symptoms as bad as that was. I'm on stick 4.0.2 with unlocked bootloader, no root.

I had changed sound effects turned on at one point but didn't like it so I disabled them.
When the hardlock occured in the music player, I was not using sound effects.

I do use my phone a lot. All day at work (10 hours a day) I have my phone in front of me, on my desk doing various things like opening web browser, playing music, etc... I can admit that out of the times I use this phone is its relatively uncommon and may be a problem with ICS/Software since this seems to be a common thing.
The Music player does hang or crash - there's a thread about it on here. Its been confirmed it only happens when the sound effects are on tho.
The phone does sometimes go into a sleep of death, and only a battery pull fixes it.
Some website do crash the browser and it reboots.
Various combinations of use do crash the phone corrupting the display, and the only way to restart is to pull the battery.
Having said all that, it sounds like you might have another issue. If its easy to get it replaced, then get it replaced. You might have a defective main board or something. If not, try a factory wipe without installing anything just as a sanity check.

Based on what you said - I think I'm just experiencing common issues.. What makes you think the phone may be actually defective?
I'm kind of pressing this because what I do not want to happen is spend days without my phone to get a new one only to find it has the same issue or is not brand-new (and inadvertently gives me a ****ty phone)
How is Samsung about RMAs? Any cross-shipping options anyone knows about? I can't check right now, but Im going to give them a call and check their site later tonight from home.
Honestly I had massive reboots and freezes happen on me to but then it turned out I had some apps on my phone that were not compatible with ics yet and I just uninstall them and no more crashes.
This phone has some bugs its early days. I don't think you will have much luck with Samsung its not apple

I've owned the phone day one and no reboots. I listen to music often and no crashes. I didn't tinker with anything though. I heard the music settings cause reboots.
Try a factory reset and not screwing with it.
The music app may have a bug with ICS. Not a big deal. Doubt the phone is defective as it sounds like a software bug. Try using another music player as a test, but I like the lock screen music controls of stock.
Galaxy Nexus - 4.0.3 CM9
Asus Transformer - 3.2 Revolver
Well since making this post the phone has not hard locked in the music player
While using the Facebook for Android App though, it suddenly rebooted while poking around...
This is kind of weird. Its not being very consistent lol
I've been monitoring the phones boot patterns and I found something that makes this phone reboot consistently
I will have Google music streaming over 3G/H...I open a program/app called "Trapster" (if you dont know what this is.. its basically a Map with an overlay of known hiding spots for speed cameras/cops)
if i have those 2 apps open the phone reboots within a minute or two - i think its heat related as the screen is ridiculously hot
Musi player bug
My phone also crashed when listening to music, but only happens when I try changing the "Sound Effects" settings in the a stock player. Tried EStrong player and no problems at all (however, there's no settings). And on my Sensation (with ICS on it - XE ROM) it will CF after 10 sec of playing...
Interesting...
Seen this twice now... Totally stock, not even rooted. Was typing a text message. Froze up and then screen slowly started to morph into this funky image. Battery pulled, rebooted and all is good again. I've barely ever touched the music player so far.

You must have been ready with a camera because I see that for 5-10 seconds before my screen just turns off... that exact "look" or image is what I see on my screen as the phone crashes/locks up.... if you leave it long enough it goes to solid white then blanks out after 30 seconds or so.... and the phone remains dark until I pull the battery.
Since my last post though, 6 days ago... I've been vigorously using the Music player along with other items trying to induce crashing and it hasn't happened. It is definitely inconsistent but I have been changing settings around. I made it so the music app doesn't stream data now(use offline songs only) and it seems to have 100% stopped it from crashing so it seems... And I mean I have music running all day at work (12 hour days) and I have it running in the car with navigation... no crashes for almost a week
I've been thinking about rooting it since I really thing what I'm experiencing is a software issue. It seems regularly rebooting my nexus has stopped all the issues I'm having.
Just to update this thread
I never replaced my phone. Heeding the advice of many saying it was a bug, I ended up rooting my phone and flashing several different ROMs. Since my last post and first ROM flashed, I have not had a single crash/lock/reset or even so much as to an unexpected reboot. Phone has zero problems after getting off the stock ROM.

Connections Optimizer is driving me crazy.

Is anyone else having problems with the Connections Optimizer?
For the first two weeks I had the phone, I didn't even know it existed. (I never activated it, nor deactivated it.) Now, the last two days, all day, throughout the day it keeps popping up wanting me to do something, and it's always at the worst time. I first noticed it when I was driving as it kept popping up blocking my nav app, making it dangerous for me to deal with it while driving. Then as I went through my day sending texts, FB, and taking photos, it just kept popping up throughout the day, just barging into whatever I was doing. There's no reason it should pop up when I'm just trying to take a photo.
So, are others having a similar problem? Will it cause any problems if I deactivate it?
Thanks.

I'd love to know as well. I turned it off and it just keeps turning itself back on - it did it all day today as well.
And not just the optimizer, but I wish the WiFi would stay off until I manually turn it on - I find myself turning it off all day long as well.
The WiFi optimizer is basically an app that turns your WiFi on and if your around WiFi that you have connected to or one of sprints partners WiFi it will connect to it. I just turned it off. I don't know what pop up your dealing with. Mine never did a pop up

touch screen unresponsive

Hello All,
Got the htc10 about a week ago and love it so far but have found one annoying issue and I am wondering if anyone else has encountered this.
First off I should note that I am running stock T-Mobile. No root or unlocked bootloader.
The screen seems to become completely unresponsive to touch after turning off the screen then back on and immediately going to messenger to send a text. Capasitive buttons still work and the screen isn't frozen as it will open into app switcher.
So far this only seems to happen when going into messenger and right after the screen has been turned back on. It doesn't cut out while using it and it doesn't happen everytime. The screen works just fine after turning it off then back on again.
Any info or help would be great. Just trying to figure out if this is a software or hardware issue.
Thanks
I've had this happen with messenger(fb) as well. I seem to only have this issue if I unlock my phone straight into the app or double tap the notification from the lock screen. Im pretty sure this isn't a hardware issue, I haven't experienced this any other time on any other app.
It appears you are right. I have been testing it a bit and it only seems to happen when the notification on the lock screen is used to open the app.
Hopefully this is a simple bug that is fixed soon as it is quite annoying.
I have the same issue. Also happening in Textra SMS, so it's not a Messenger issue atleast. What kind of keyboards do you guys use?
Any fix?

Same thing here and used to happen on my m8 too. Mainky happens when I open the WhatsApp app directly from the unlock screen. Capacitive buttons work fine but can't type or touch the screen. Also notice the notification bar is blank. Until I lock and unlock the phone again.

YES!!!finally a thread with the same issue. i have the htc10 with the finger print unlock and there is a strange glitch that when the screen times out and i unlock with my thumbprint it unlocks the phone and goes to my home screen but the touch screen remains unresponsive. i can use the soft touch home and back buttons but not the screen. drives me crazy. i have to force restart my phone and it will work until the screen times out... and then i am back to restarting.... about a dozen times a day. sometimes i cant answer calls until after i restart the phone... is there any way to fix this?
This is happening to me very often since a few days ago.
Rebooting the phone solves the issue most of the time, how did you fix this?
I'm not sure if this is a software or hardware problem.
Having same issues on htc 10 lifestyle. Still looking for any permanent solution. Reboot helps, but only for a few hours.
Hey guys, wish I could offer a solution but just like to say that this has been happening to me for months and it's awful.
Need to turn the screen on and off again multiple times till it responds.

Question Random reboots

Hi!
I own an SM-F926B/DS since April with latest updates, and the last couple of months it randomly reboots. Some times reboots without asking SIM PIN, some other times reboots asking SIM PIN, some other times it keeps rebooting and I have to press the side button to make it functional again. Most of the times, the phone is hot on the back. I don't have to use the phone, some times it has rebooted just when I pick it up from the table. There is not a specific pattern, at least from what I can tell, some times 2-3 days will pass without any reboots, some other times a couple of times per day, some other times it goes to a reboot loop. Some times, the phone freezes (usually in Chrome or in settings menu), or some random applications do not open.
I tried removing some apps which I installed the period I noticed the problem, but it didn't make any difference.
I understand that I must do a factory reset, but I'm trying to find other ways to debug the problem before doing this, because I have many apps with many settings and it will take me forever to reinstall them. also, by just restoring a previous backup after a factory reset, I'm afraid that probably I will restore the problem too.
Have you any other advises? Perhaps a way to log the state when the phone tries to reboot or which application requests it?
Are there any others with similar problems?
Thank you.
.
I have had the same problem. Ses after the last update it don't seem to be happening now.
I had a random reboot problem back in July and it was the Facebook Messenger app that caused it after an update they did. When they updated it again, the problem stopped. The app also had been eating battery like crazy during that time. So, I'd start with looking at what apps got updated at the time it began happening as well as see if any are killing your battery.
Sounds like a badly behaving app eating battery and CPU to the point it's getting turned off. I would start with usage stats and battery stats whenever this happens and see what's going on in the background and start there.
Thank you for your help.
As I have said, the phone has all the latest updates, so it is not an outdated app or OS issue. Also, I have hundreds of apps installed, taking 10 updates daily, so it is impossible to track down which app might have caused the issue two months ago.
The phone does not turn off, it reboots. This way I can't find the app which may consumes more battery. The only thing that could help and I have not already mentioned, is that in most cases I see issues related to "Google Play Services" like excessive battery usage or stopped responding.

It has nothing to do with an app being outdated, but that when they updated it, they coded something wrong. You can try to track which one by looking at which apps consume too much battery in the Settings. Rebooting does not change that stat at all, and rebooting is what it did when Facebook Messenger caused my problem back in July.

The usual suspect is Google Play Services. In device care I see different apps crashing daily, not the same.

My Google Play Services are currently 1.5 and 0.3% (Secure Folder and regular one), so that's not excessive battery use for that. When Messenger caused me issues, it was like 40% or something. It also never crashed.
I tried a diagnostic log app, but it doesn't work to capture random reboots. I just had to wait until they updated the app, which I think was about a week after it started. It mostly happened while I wasn't using my phone.
Hmm.
Last week I eventually did a factory reset. After selecting language for the initial setup, the phone entered a reboot loop again, so it was obvious that it wasn't a software issue. I proceeded with the setup, but without restoring any applications. The phone did some reboots again.
I contacted local customer support, and when I went there they connected the phone to their software and they were able to see in the log files some kernel panicks, memory errors and boot loops since the factory reset. They told me that if I hadn't reset the phone, they would be able to see all the problems since the beginning.
They told me that they have to change the main board, and after two days I got my phone back. This happened on Friday, today is Monday and everything seems fine (I crossed my fingers). I reinstalled everything including applications from Samsung Cloud.

Oh wow, what a hassle! Glad the phone seems to be working well now, though! That's crazy that it rebooted that early in the setup process. Did you have to pay for the fix?
No, it was covered by guarantee, the phone is less than 6 months old.

Well that's a relief!

Question Touches sometimes don't register immediately after going to home screen, etc

Does this happen for anyone else? On my S22, not all of the time but sometimes, when I leave an app, go to recents, go home, etc, a tap sometimes won't register immediately, or maybe for .5 to 1 second. I have show taps enabled and I can see the taps happening, so the phone and touch screen are both aware of the tap, but they still don't do anything for a bit.
I think it's an issue related to One UI Home (Launcher) and its animations. They should definitely improve it and squash those annoying bugs.

Diaable all animations. Not needed.
There should be no delay. A second is an eternity. Is it running warm or hot when near idle?
Try clearing the system cache.
Try in safe mode. You may have a buggy 3rd party app.
Did you do any major firmware upgrades without a factory reset afterwards? If so... get reloading.
Do not use SmartSwitch.

For me, it's been this way since I got the phone, the animations definitely seem to cause most of the issues after turning them off, but some of my taps still dont register. It's significantly more rare with animations turned off but it's still there. Unless it's just normal for some taps not to register every now and then, but I never had this issue on my galaxy s9.
While typing in another app (chrome), I just tried going to my home screen and tapping a different app immediately, it didn't register it on the first try. I don't double tap so I'm not sure how long it takes to stop. It's rare but certainly still there.
I'm curious if anyone else here tries, even with animations off, if they would experience the same issue occasionally (I had my keyboard up and I was typing). While in one app, type or do something for a bit, and then hit home, and tried tapping another app immediately. For context, I am tapping it RIGHT as the screen switches to home. I know I'm not tapping it too fast or anything because my taps register more often than not doing the same thing.
Trying in safe mode is difficult as it seems the issue doesn't present itself immediately, even in normal mode, after a fresh boot. I also tried safe mode with my internet enabled and didn't experience the issue, but I'm still not experiencing it (in normal mode) right now at all. It's important to mention that I've experienced certain hiccups like this since I first got the phone, before I installed any third party apps. Most of the bloatware apps I have uninstalled. The only thing I can think of, that was available then and still available now, are apps like google drive, samsung notes, etc.

Show taps is enabled so I can see the screen acknowledges all my touches, it just doesn't do stuff otherwise sometimes.

Something running in the background.
Do a factory reset maybe to rule out user data corruption or malware.
Possibly corrupted firmware or mobo failure.
What are the power settings in Device Care?
Disable global power management.

I have everything off other than auto disable apps, it's instead listed as automatically put apps to sleep, is that the same thing?
I'd rather not factory reset, but I don't think it's malware if I got this phone factory fresh and it had the issues then too.
Considering it seems to get worse the longer the phone is on, I suppose a mother board issue would make sense. At least it hasn't progressively gotten worse altogether since I got the phone a year ago.
