[Q] Did I lose Root? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I have recently, finally got to root my Evo4G after making the mistake and taking the 2.3 update a few months back. I am some experience but not a lot with rooting phones. (I'm better at "rooting" if you will w/ computers and game systems. lol) Anyways here is what I did:
1. I used Revolutionary to S-Off my phone and use that as my Recovery System
2. Installed ICS-deck-4.0.3 PA8
3. Installed the gapps that it came with and booted up.
Everything is working very well, I ran into no issues at all. However some things I noticed are:
1. I cant mount my SD Card
2. Cant seem to get the calendar fix to work
3. Also it seems that I dont have root??? I thought that revolutionary rooted the phone. If not how do i actually "root" and not just S-Off so that I can install custom ROMS.
Thanks
Jessy

To mount SD card you have to download a third party app.
the calender fix works (i think) but it depends on if it flashed correctly, if it was a bad download, etc.
Revolutionary removes the NAND protection, it doesn't root it. You have to flash a zip for the root binaries or you can install Superuser from the market. The su wasn't working for a little bit before because it wasn't updated for ICS. Make sure you have the latest Superuser app installed to install the latest su binaries.
my evo is aggressively runny

Couldn't update from market. Had to download the zip from su website then install from recovery. I got it to my phone from Bluetooth transfer from my notebook. Damn its like trying to get something done at a DMV. Haha. All works now. Mounting, hw acceleration, root access, now..... where's those beta cam drivers haha
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Also, the calendar fix, I was only able to install 2 of the apk's but I did it while i was in the OS not in recovery mode. I wasnt able just install them via the .zip file in recovery either.
Does someone have some better instructions on this?

Rom Manager starts but wont let me select OK?

Hi,
I have my DHD root for some time and I followed instructions to retain root when I did the OTA in December. Since then I had many issues with superuser so i found a version that works correctly.
I decided to install and try Rom Manager to update my recovery to the latest.
Rom Manager opens, but at the prompt, it will not allow me to select OK to continue. I can cancel fine, so its not crashed/hung.
Is this the app not requesting root access in the same way as other apps?
Fastboot and busybox all work correctly with superuser.
Any help?
Anyone got any ideas?
I even installed fresh, LeeDroid last night and still it wont let me select OK to go in to ROM Manager?
Maybe something on my SD card?

You are better off without the latest version of CWM if you have no plans of flashing CM7.
Damn, I just purchased the full Rom Manager in the hope that it would work.
What a waste of 4 Euro.
So I guess I wanted it for the ease of ability to manage ROM's as i use my phone more as a gadget rather than a phone. I like messing with all the great work chefs produce
Ill continue to flash via clockwork recovery and continue to upgrade clockwork recovery with the SDK.
I have a 16Gb Class 10 card on the way so when it arrives, ill do a full wipe and flash with a blank card to see what i get.
Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.
Going to bring this post back up as i was wondering if anyone had anything similar since?
I have gone totally back to stock now and done a fresh root and Eng and radio s-off but still Rom Manager opens but wont let me slect OK to continue.
I think its almost cetainly related to root access as I'm not able to choose allow when apps pop up requesting root. i have to deny them, close the app, then swap them to allow in Superuser and then run them again!
This is a real pain in my ass at the moment.
Is your superuser the latest version?
Yeah, have tried both the one in ChainsDD's thread which I know is very old.
Also tried the patched version that works properly with the later froyo build.
Have tried flashing LeeDroid and Revolution ROM's but still the same problem persists.
I went back to stock today, thinking it might have been a step i missed/screwed up. Still this problem persists.
I'm stumped. Could it be some hardware issue?
Well Damn crap n balls to it anyway!
Turns out after all this time, all I had to do was touch the search button at the bottom right of my HD to bypass the disclaimer of Rom manager.
I feel so dumb now. Still having issue with superuser allow button but I can work around that for now.

[Q] LG Ally rooting with Froyo

Tried looking around but I haven't had much luck on this one. Since Froyo became available sometime around the 18th via the LG updater I have yet to see a way to root this thing. z4 and universal just don't work. Anyone have a method to this madness?
Note: This isn't my phone but really a work phone. The one my co workers and myself use is not really in need of root but my manager uses wifi tether like a crack addict and needs it. Right now I told him to just say no to the update since it's now being pushed via OTA.
Rooted Ally Froyo OTA update
I also have the same question kind of.. OTA Froyo update came this morning but we (my girls phone)have denied it because we use tether more than we want Flash someone Please let me know when Ally Froyo is Rooted. THX.
Well my wife has the LG Ally and since she's had it I've been playing with it. It actually took a bit to get the update to load, but once it did I realized I lost root. I didn't think much of it because I had backups, but restoring them didn't work which meant that I wasn't able to downgrade and try installing a rooted version.
I then found that I could download the Superuser app in a zip file and use it in a custom recovery to install as root.
First get the latest Superuser zip file for froyo, su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip,here and put it on the root of your sdcard.
Then reboot into your recovery. The easiest way to get into the recovery is to power off the phone and then press SEND + MENU + tap END, keep tapping END until you see the LG screen. Once you see the LG screen you can let go.
Now you need to navigate through your custom recovery to use the zip file.
Amon-ra: Flash zip menu > Flash zip from sdcard > su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip.
ClockWork: Install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard > su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip.
Once it is done loading reset and you should be good to go!
Credit goes to ChainsDD for the awesome app!
I am stuck at the reboot into recovery, since I did not have root prior to the upgrade to 2.2.1, I cannot install a custom recovery to finish this method. Any ideas? This version locks out the files I need to push to!!!
Well so far z4root no matter what version doesn't work, think it has to do with the patch they applied in 2.2.1 Superoneclick just gets stuck in a loop on rageagainstthecage so I'm at a loss. Android Forums has the long route on how to root but to be honest I know I will screw something up. Anyone have a solution? I was rooted before but I never installed a custom recovery as this a work phone.
If you turn off the phone and then plug it into the computer and hold SEND + MENU + hit END to turn it on does it stay with the screen that shows a white triangle, a !, and the android guy? If so see if you can use adb shell and have it connect with the phone. I'm not ever sure if after the update you can get into it. You can use either VOL-DOWN + HOME + tap END or the previous method. The last one should get you the bootloader and if you connect your phone here to your computer you should get a "fastboot" device installed, or something like that. If you can get here you can flash a custom recovery. I think there is a way to do it via the recovery as well. Once you can get into either of those we can get you root.

try to re flash the phone with it again, if all else fails..... factory reset
lg ally wont root
Apparently I got my phone when verizon figured out a way to block all rooting apps. My LG Ally won't root using any of the suggested apps such as z4 root any version, superuser nor universal androot and I refuse 2 do that long drawn out process provided in newer manuals that's just ridiculous. We shouldn't b force 2 keep applications tht we don't want.
I didn't hv 2 update my phone it came with the 2.21 version alreayd installed. I did a factory reset twice and my phone won't work until I call verizon for them 2 reactivate it and once I do that all of the preinstall crap is already on phone as soon as its activated
It's too bad we don't have a method to root like on the Nook Color where you take a formatted SD card and boot from it...

I haven't figured out how to re-root yet but I did find a suggestion somewhere in a forum that worked for tethering. Download the Quick Settings app (with the green gear icon) from the market and it gives you and option to turn on wifi hotspot without rooting. It'll bypass the fee Verizon charges while using the app they added in Froyo.

While I agree that we should not have to keep apps on our devices that we do want or intend to use-if you want them gone-you MUST follow the "long drawn out process" to root the device and remove those apps. Otherwise-just deal with the apps being there.
JL
Also having issues
Having problems with z4mod application also. I tried rooting it with/without SD card in, connected/disconnected from the computer. The app runs, but it gets as far as "acquiring root shell" and then goes back to my home screen. No superuser app or busybox. I even tried installing busybox from the market and it just says Phone not rooted. Its kinda aggravating me. I'm kinda tired of tethering because of the net timeouts. Can't chat on IRC.

How to root and still obtain OTA 2.3.4 from Verizon?

Hi Folks,
I'm a noob, but noticed that we can root our Incredible before the new 2.3.4 OTA is accepted from Verizon, thus allowing for future ROM installs, etc.
However, I have read that using Unrevoked to root also installs a custom recovery and that the OTA will only work if my phone still has the stock recovery.
My preference would be to root the phone for enabling my ability to experiment with the inevitable 2.3.4-based ROMs that will have nicer UIs than what Verizon/HTC will provide via Sense 1.0 in the new OS update.
So, I'm curious if there's a straightforward guide for rooting an (AMOLED) Incredible but maintaining all else as stock, please. Yes, I've tried searching here but have thus far found snippets of info that have not yet gelled for me.
I suppose another option is to simply accept the OTA on my stock phone and wait for Unrevoked or another source to figure out how to root the 2.3.4 install. Does that seem likely to occur? It seems that there's still good enthusiasm for this phone, but I'm not familiar with the Developer circles and their interests.
Thanks.
- ooofest
Root, install this and continue on your way.
Oh, so root with Unrevoked (for example), install that OTA-based ROM and not wait for the Verizon OTA, I guess you're offering.
Seems a good option to consider, thanks.
- ooofest
Exactly! Not sure what other option is ever going to be available.

That link is to the OTA, which was taken apart to add root and a few other items to it, and made into a flashable zip. Root with Unrevoked, then flash that zip file.
Way easier than:
Rooting now, and then trying to get stock recovery instead of ClockworkMod Recovery, waiting for the OTA, accepting the OTA, then making sure it all works when it's done.
I wouldn't tell anyone to expect root to be achieved on the OTA simply because most of the effort these days is focused on working the kinks out of east root methods on other devices like the dInc2, EVO Shift, EVO 3D, and the Tbolt. There's already a rooted OTA ROM out there anyways, isn't there?

Yup, just install with RM by choosing the "Install from SD" option.
I never install from rm. I manually wipe and install from recovery.
keeps saying htc sence has stopped unexpectedly..
It keeps force closing.. I can not get to any menu or anything, it just keeps cycling and force closing, leaving me no time to perform any actions. HELP pleasse
tried to factory restore it upon boot... didn't work...
I tried to boot into recovery cause i did backup rom before tried to install... but when I get into recovery and select an option is does nothing.
It seems it might allow me to wipe data/ factory reset and also wipe cache paritition. Not sure what i should do until I get an answer.
EDIT... Believe I am restoring right now and everything should be Ok, lol. Damn... I will post results in a little when I am done having a heart attack
Having problems @ the screen where the two balls go around the big circle... just froze..
EDIT.
Still froze.
Got it back to work somehow.. pressed the power button while @ the screen mentioned above and it took me to the home screen.

[Q] Lost root, won't come back

So I'm not a complete and utter n00b here, as I've been rooting and installing CM for at least three years now on several different phones. But this problem vexes me...
Patient: SIII, formerly rooted and running CM10.1 just fine. A few weeks ago, I tried to install a 10.2 stable build, and it somehow took my root away. I tried every trick I knew how - installing the root files via Odin (many versions), via ADB, via Kingo Root...nothing. Absolutely nothing I try will get this thing to give me my root back, and the ads are starting to really get on my nerves.
My ticker says 15 attempted installs, but I don't think it's blocking me from rooting...is it? All the phones I've rooted I've never had a problem like this, where absolutely nothing will allow root to "take", such as it is.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks!
Wow, nothing? I figured someone would at least sigh heavily, berate me for not reading the forums completely, then point me to a thread where this has been discussed ad nauseum
Last night, I tried rooting with TWRP, CWM, every variant and trick I could find to get this thing to root for me, and while these things all seem to load fine, none of them give me my root access back. No one has any ideas?
Thanks!
help
im using rooted 4.3 stock rom in t999..
everytime i boot into recovery it says "fixed root"
any solve for this?????
Did you dirty flash CM10.2 over CM10.1? if so, it might have failed to write the partition completely/correctly. I would suggest to backup everything that you can (adb backup or similar) and then wipe everything then reflash fresh CM10.2.0 + GApps + SuperSU or Koush's Superuser flashable zip.

Towel Root(TR) and Rooting in not one click but 2 Clicks

First of all I want to thank all the developers on this and all forums, I hope that you prosper in your endeavers...
I have been at this since the sprint mogul came out. Playing around with PPC kitchen and technology keeps getting more 'interesting'...During the s3 root procedure I was fascinated with the Knox and how it was dealt with automatically with Supersu, and how cwm took control of keeping itself as the recovery as well as offering to keep root(such manners!)...
Check your Version # this how to is meant for 4.2.2 ONLY
I believe there was just an update(cause my phone downloaded it and wanted to install) I knew it was time to root again.
This summer I finally upgraded from my beloved Galaxy s1... After many a rom it was victim of a glass of water
spill...Bought a s3 sph-d710 for cheap and have been loving the phone but missing my wifi teather(and text to speech
prowess, why does the s3 stock suck worse than s1 cyanogen 10.2?) so I know I must root.
OOps my volume UP button is
broken! How to I get to downoad mode? to use ODIN! Gueess I gotta Root on the Phone...
ABD? Tried finding the tiny version of abd but after failed downloads and searching for links for the tiny version were
broken so...instead I Installed towel root and followed the guide here
http://gs3.wonderhowto.com/how-to/easiest-one-click-root-method-for-your-samsung-galaxy-s3-0155625/
It was so amazingly easy(you download towelR touch the red Icon or one of the donate links in TR), wait 20 second click make it rain, wait 20 seconds then check with saferoot...(after installing it @ goo.im)! After TR immediately without rebooting install #saferoot(do not attempt to get root with this just install), and install CWM recovery which I did thru rom manager(via google play, I attempted to install from their site but it was a zip and it did not jive with my unpackaging skillsEDIT Drr it was prolly for cwm?). Safe root does something for SuperSU so that it will not hang while removing knox( wait 5 min if it seems to hang then force quit and u prolly did not install saferoot yet so do that and try again)
(EDIT: be sure and install safe root (FROM GOO.IM)after you make it rain with TR and then you install supersu & rom manager. Also Install towelroot and Supersu from their perspective verified real web page not other sources/googleplay) I was freezing at chainfires supersu install after making it rain)but once saferoot is installed it will disable knox(noted above)
I then took out Knox with Supersu simply by opening the program(it will ask you if you want to kill Knox) also it will ask to
update everytime.
Then I Installed the 4g and hotspot fix via CWM recovery via Rom Manager reboot into recovery and I was fully functioning..done! ND8Oxed 4.4.2..

So just to help out other noob out there, what I did was:
1. root the S3. www idigitaltimes com/samsung-galaxy-s3-android-442-kitkat-update-how-root-sprint-sph-l710-variant-and-install-custom-roms
(Sorry I am not allowed to post links yet)
2. Install a custom recovery. I did not use Philz. I am sure it must be very good. However, I am not very good at using
Odin yet. I used CWM. Installed it directly from play store. There are lots of youtube videos on how to do it.
3. copy the Hotspot ROM zip file to the SD card in the phone. In my case, the ROM is the ND8 odexing version
4. Back up my stock rom (rooted) with the CWM recovery, in case something goes wrong. Lots of youtube videos too.
5. install rom from the zip file using CWM recovery. (again, lots of youtube videos available)
6. factory reset and wipe the cache
7. reboot and setup the phone from scratch.
There you go.
