Landscape Start screen - Windows Phone 7 General

I am wondering if any developer would like to make a landscape start screen. What this means is I can turn my phone to landscape mode and the start screen changes to landscape. I think that would be a cool feature if possible this could be implemented in some way.

If you mean home page = the home screen then answer would be probably no because the api won't allow you. I could happily be wrong!

Not possible. Even phones with slide keyboard don't have this

it will be like 2 tiles and lots of empty space on the right side of your screen...
why would u want that??

Huh?
I think what the OP is asking for would look something like this (very quick) mock-up:
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Of course it will never happen, but it would be very nice if it did.

yah that is what i am looking for. This couldnt be possible even with a special skin or custom rom. Android people have some pretty radical customs roms(i know it is open source) just wondering why that couldnt be done with windows phone.

Well for one, performance reasons. I remember when I had the Android G1 switching between landscape and portrait lagged as I had to wait for the system to be responsive again after opening the keyboard on the homescreen.
Most windows phones are candybars. Only 2 generation 1 models have slide out keyboards
The OS is designed primarily around portrait use. If you were to make the homescreen landscape it would present some design inconsistencies.
It is not necessary. Using the homescreen in landscape mode provides no tangible benefit over portrait mode and could be annoying when lying in bed etc.

well see when i am using my phone in landscape mode, it gets annoying for the screen to go back to portrait so this is why i am wondering if this is possible. There are some phone that can go into portrat mode and dont have a qwerty(non windows phones)

The quick mock-up looks like Windows 8.

yah it looks good but i dont know if it will happen

Nice mockup!

I too am pining for lanscape start, hubs, index search
is there a registry edit maybe in order to add this functionality when I dock my Titan?
I have been using the dock for my Titan a lot lately and wish the start screen would rotate to landscape when I dock or the tiles themselves could simply stay in portrait just rotate accordingly when I dock because the screen is now a landscape position sure there will be a huge black bar off to the right but that's fine and for the hubs and index search too.
there has be some type of edit to change the system into rotating start screen?

Sorry but I think that is impossible, Windows Phone 7 is really closed about the homescreen and mofidications

maybe the app "htc dock mode" could be something for you

Maybe in windows phone it a landscape start screen could come alive

WM 6.5 app to show where the screen is tapped?

I myself am not a programmer, but I do have a good idea for anyone that has some free time.
If someone could make an app that when the touch screen is tapped/pressed it makes a ripple or dot or some sort of signal of where the screen is tapped.
I've seen this in Microsoft PowerPoint slide shows...
Whenever i attempt to press a button and i am not hitting it i would like to know where i am actually pressing so i can adjust.
If this already exists please point me in the right direction.
Thanks

I wanna know where im tapping the screen, ive now also seen screen shots where people have an arrow cursor, that would also be pretty handy if anyone knows how to get that
so basically like Windows Vista's water ripple on Tablet PC
yes exactly
i'm kinda suprised it's not out there already. the palm pre has it and it's a nice feature. kinda reassuring. lets hope someone can pull it together...
yea i would see it as a staple in touch screen devices, but maybe it takes too much memory or it gets in the way? im not sure but i know i would definitely use it
I am all for this as well, it would be really nice to have.
That would be nice.

(Use yer imaginations...) (Loads images and does things to them...)
So if when u click on the screen it takes a screenshot and then does a ripple on that image...
I know Twolf has done ripples in flash, so if flash were an acceptable solution, that would be a method. Have to take more screenshots and load em in to keep it updated..

- You can now add your own background picture, just place bg.jpg in this folder:
> For WM6 (not sure about WM5) the folder is /Application Data/Volatile/FlashRipple4
> For WM2003 the folder is /temp/FlashRipple4
If for some reason this is not the folder, run it once and search for a folder called FlashRipple4 with your Explorer application.
As always, sourcecode and EXE included in the zip, I also included a background image for testing.

So i don't know how this app exits, but if it could output the coordinates to the registry or a return argument i could at least click on the today screen with them in Mortscript.
I assume BBonz is already half done with the app anyways...
I've been trying to figure out if this is possible from a coding perspective... It seems that (at least with the .net compact framework) that there's no way to hook screen taps. A program like this would actually have to be a driver for the touch panel. The most similar thing anyone has done is TouchResponse. Unfortunately, the author hasn't been online since November...so I can't ask for details on how it was done.
If anyone can help figure out how to create a program, service or driver that can globally hook screen taps and return coordinates...I can probably write this.
Hi xawen,
"If anyone can help figure out how to create a program, service or driver that can globally hook screen taps and return coordinates...I can probably write this."
You can hook all touch events via the PenTrac.dll approach. Have a look at Scilors Multitouch DLL thread. There I explained the approach and posted the sourcecode...
hm, but this is only an approach for the HD2's touch.dll. Not for all Win 6.5 smartphones...
HD2 is good enough for me
no but seriously, tried doing some (very little) research but came up with nothing

Actually landscape Rosie is possible, G1 ports allow landscape mode, this is because it forces Sense to rotate when u pull out the keyboard, there isnt any accelerometer rotation tho, Im looking into making the process automated, by default landscape mode in Rosie is disabled
Yessss, i'd like it
There will be an official one when HTC release a hardware keyboard device...same thing happened with touch flo.
If you have 2.1 Download an app from market called Helix Launcher, its really awesome and gives you a home screen which rotates and it looks like nexus one, the down side is you cant use Sense Widgets on it. Only the stock android and the widgets which are available in market

[Q] Google earth control

Ok, this may be a totally dumb question, but how the hell do I control/interact with Google Earth on my Nexus (4.0.2). I cannot seem to get it to tilt and pan etc using touch. I see no other icons or menus with control options? Am I missing something simple?
Uninstall and redownload.
Terminators run on Android
Ok. I'll try that. but this was the pre-installed Earth that came on my phone. Not sure I can uninstall. will try though. It's updated itself since I got the phone so should have the latest version, but will try. thanks
Ok I uninstalled the updates to the app, but I cannot uninstall this "system app". So I disabled it, forced stop. Enabled it again and will now download updates to make it 6.1 again.
I'm not sure what I should be seeing when using this app. There are no controls.
Just go to market and search for your application on the menus, then press your app Earth and there will be an option to update.. That's what i've done.
Cheers!
I have the very latest google earth from the market. 6.1 something.
Here is a screenshot. Does this look right? how do I tilt the screen to get the 3d angle? all I can do is drag around, and rotate. I cannot tilt so I can see topography?
ARGH. Im sure its just me not knowing how to use it.
Screen shot - where are the tilt controls?

I too would like to learn how to tilt the view in Google Earth.
But I am bemused by the responses so far. Why is it necessary to uninstall and reinstall? Are you suggesting that the factory installation (with updates) is somehow broken?
Use two fingers to rotate/tilt.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Hold two fingers to the screen and instead of pinching, just slide both up or down to change viewing angle or rotate them in a circular motion around a centred point in order to spin.

I thought so, because the OP said other icons and controls were also missing. I also did not realize it was a system app (it was a Market app on my Fascinate and treated by my ROM as a user app)

How the hell did I not figure that out!! Never used multi-touch in that way before.
Thats great. Exactly the solution I needed. thank you.
I've been using touchscreen for 2 years, so I cannot be the first person not to figure that out. No hint on the app itself or help about how to do that.
anyway, cheers

Google maps works the exact same way. If you go to maps and drag 2 fingers down you will get that "3d" view. It's cool. They must be trying to get some continuity from app to app.

Although I'd agree it's not massively obvious in the app, there's always Menu > Help. Which has this to say:
To tilt your screen, touch the Look-Around icon and ensure it's enabled. To tilt up, touch the screen and move down. To tilt down, touch the screen and move up.

Spotted the problem? The "Look Around" button doesn't seem to exist any more, so the help is out of date! Wonderful.
I can confirm the "two finger draggy-spin" method works fine though
I know the solution. This was happening to me too but i figured out. This is how to do it. Enable auto rotation open Google earth and tilt your device then hold two fingers and swipe downward or upward. I hope i helped so thank me. Ok!!!!!!

Sense 4.0 in... LANDSCAPE?!

My phone out the box was for some reason, locked on landscape mode. Enabling auto-rotate fixed this, but turning it off goes back to landscape. All the apps also become landscape locked. Here are some pics as this is the strangest thing I ever seen as sense is NOT supposed to be landscaped at all

When I turn off auto-rotate I hold it in portrait and it still locks to landscape. I dont have any MHL or whatever wires to make it landscape either.

Meh, no big deal.
Im fully stock. I want to root, don't really know where to start. My other adnroid's had an easy-root type system that I did. I read now I have to do something on htcdev, flash some non-official CWM. Hopefully an easier method will be out soon =D. Flashing roms for me isn't a problem. I just dont want to mess with files in the core of the phone

This is bizarre because sense 4 doesn't natively allow for landscape except when you're using media link or MHL. BUT, I think there 2 possible solutions for you:
1. Calibrate your G Sensor ( from settings -> display).
2. Flash stock ROM and start over.
Hope things work out for you. Otherwise, I'd return my phone and get a new one. Don't unlock your phone if this is what u might do.
Cheers

General Bugs that I've noticed.

I will be posting bugs and maybe you too just so that we can compile them and maybe we can solve them using the reply functions or something.
Here are mine:
Reacting doesn't work right on Facebook it'll being up the options but I have to take my finger off and tap on the reaction I want.
Spire mobile banking app only in landscape
Commenity good sam's credit card log in refreshes when tapping username or password fields (tested on edge and Samsung internet both using desktop and mobile site) only when I use outer screen did it work. I didn't try chrome cause I've been trying to oust chrome.
YouTube randomly launches in multivideo or regular mobile version displaying only one video spread across screen.
Log in button on xda doesn't function on edge only on chrome. Which is what I'm using to post this.
If you got answers or resolutions lmk. If you got bugs post em .
I noticed sometimes when I tap things near the bottom of the screen in an app the phone will briefly flash another app as if it thinks I want to swipe to that app. Sometimes it actually does switch to another app. Does this happen to anyone?
If I use Bixby to set a timer, then move the little on screen timer to somewhere convenient it resets to its default position upon changing folding and/or screen orientation

I think your finger activated the bottom home/back gesture. You can turn on the gesture guide so there is more offset from bottom so less accidentally activation.

In hopes that somebody from Samsung may actually come across this I'll add another thing.. this is copied and pasted from multiple Reddit posts I made earlier tonight
On the Z Fold 3 I noticed that if you change minimum width on the main large screen it also affects the smaller screen. Does anybody know if there is a way to have Bixby routines manipulate developer options so that I can set one width for main screen and one width for smaller screen?
Anyways it'd be nice to have this option available rather than just zoom and font size options via Bixby routines
