Anyone exchange their Nexus? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I know a lot of us have been having battery issues and/or signal issues. Has anyone reached to Verizon and exchanged it? If you have, did it get better for you? Is everyone waiting for the updates first?

Yup...going again today.
Yessir, although not for those reasons. My first GNex had screen problems...the vertical banding you may or may not have read about. I compared mine to a couple other Gnexes (GNexi?) and neither had the banding to the level that mine did, so the store agreed to swap it out. The second one I had had a great screen, but the speaker for phone calls (the earpiece) was defective and sounded blown. If I had the volume over 20% there was static over everything. The store once again agreed to swap it out. Now I'm on my third, and this one clearly has a screen problem. I didn't notice it last night before leaving the store, but anything that's grey (see all menus, widgets, etc) are purple unless I turn the brightness up to 50% or more. I'm going back today to swap again for the 4th one, HOPING TO GOD I CAN JUST GET A GOOD ONE.
I know all the Samsung haters will say this was coming and I also understand there's a tradeoff for having SAMOLED, but call me crazy for feeling like when I spend $300 on a phone that it should maintain SOME level of quality control.

Screen defects?

After a few hours of playing with the VZW Nexus, I noticed a thin, vertical line of pixels that are lighter than the surrounding area. It's really noticeable on white to gray screens.
Has anyone else noticed such a defect on their display? Would VZW exchange it? I probably won't be able to get to a VZW store until the weekend is up, and I'm worried that they will assume the delay means that I caused the issue.

Yep I got em looks like a faint checker board

I think that's just an artifact of amoled screens in general. AFAIK, SGS2 had the same issue.

Are you sure? What I have looks more like stuck pixels; a line of pixels that are firing at a consistently higher brightness than the others. I had a Droid Charge before this phone and never had this issue.

The Charge doesn't have the same screen, it was SAMOLED+, the Galaxy Nexus is just SAMOLED.
That said, I'd need a better idea of what you mean, or how you're testing it. But I don't think I see it, and I'm pretty picky about my display.
I am a little disappointed in the odd washed-out look it has, almost like the gamma's too high.
Anyway, Verizon would probably exchange it, but you'd probably need to call in and have them ship you one. Going in-store you'll be fighting with stubborn sales reps who aren't getting a single dime of commission off their time with you.
My first unit had that, my current one doesn't. Try for an exchange, mine is perfect, but took two tries.

Is there a way of fixing it, like how you used to be able to fix old tv's with a magnet?
i have the same issue... and i can`t make an exchange because i bought at USA and know i`m in BRAZIL. =/ have some way to correct this problem??
thanks
Judging by the crickets chirping, looks like the only thing you can do is exchange it.
Has anyone had any luck with replacements? I get the vertical/horizontal line issue at lower brightness, but even at higher brightness solid colors look somewhat grainy.
I had a vertical line and some random spots with pixel problems. It wasn't visible during the day, but at night those pixel were darker than all the rest. Got a new phone within a couple of minutes in the store.

horizontal lines on the screen?

I just purchased my phone and i am noticing horizantal lines on light color backgrounds like white and gray. It is extremely annoying, especially for the price i paid for the phone.
Anyone else having this issue. Looks like i have to exchange it. Any thoughts?

If you can still see them above 20-40% brightness then you may have a poor screen. It is normal to see grains and a small amount of banding on AMOLED pentile displays when the brightness is very low. They entirely go away for me at 25% brightness.
I dont see them over %40-50 brightness for white backgrounds but they still can be seen on grey backgrounds. Well when you keep the brightness that high it sucks the battery pretty quick. I dont know what to do
Should i just go ahead and exchange it?
I have this same issue. I swapped it out 2 times each one had the same issue.
I'm pretty upset about this.
I've been told that the iPhone had similar issues and that use of the phone will cure the screen and the glue. Not sure if this is the case. I have been playing movies non stop to help "cure" the screen.
I notice it most when I use auto brightness. If I put the brightness all the way up it pretty much goes away.
Anyone able to help us out?
its because this phone uses an outdated "pentile" screen. sure its "HD" with a higher resolution & pixel count then standard pentile screens but its still pentile. if you want a screen that will amaze you then exchange your phone for a Rezound. i actually had a Rezound but gave in to the hype and exchanged it for the Nexus. oops
This has been discussed on here (and on forums for other phones) for some time now. I've followed many of the threads, and my understanding was that it had more to do with Super AMOLED displays, rather than pentile.
For example, the Galaxy SII also has this issue, and it uses an RGB display, not pentile. And my Nexus One, which is pentile, uses a non-Super AMOLED display and doesn't have this issue at all.
All that being said... when I got my Galaxy Nexus, this was more noticeable than I expected to be... but I found it actually bothered me less than I thought it would.
I call them vertical banding ghosts, but I guess in your case they are horizontal. Every sAMOLED phone has them, I don't know why. My Vibrant has it too, but honestly I just got used to it and now I don't even notice them.
I wonder what causes it.

it isnt bothering me too much either actually. just sucks that at this point in time(on a high-end device even) that we're having to deal with it period. my last 3 phones were HTC(Incredible 2, Thunderbolt & Rezound) and they never had this issue. Actually, the display on the Rezound was the best i had ever seen.
just in case anyone is having second thoughts about the Nexus, i have seen the Rezound going for around $300 - $500 on craigslist/ebay & the Nexus' at $600. so you could always make a bit of money rather then just doing an exchange at the store.
im contemplating it myself depending on how soon/if they can fix this phone & ICS to get it to properly play certain files/games that are a big deal to me.
If they were to fix the screens, would they replace the older phones for free?

I don't think there will be a fix because I don't think it is necessarily broken. All phones with sAmoled have those banding ghosts (I'm assuming this is what the OP was reffering to). I've never heard of horizontal though, usually vertical. All the sAmoled phones have it.

Update: I went back to Verizon and played with their Demo phone, had the rep come look for reference, then we unboxed and booted until we found one with out the lines. This is defiantly not a technology issue, its a defective screen issue.
I swap for the new phone and now I have no lines.
When you go, make sure you pull up dark green and white full screen and DO NOT accept any phone with the lines.
Now that I have one without a screen issue I can relax. Yes, the Rezound has a smoother look and a little more resolution or PPI (pixel per inch) but it doesn't come near the vibrancy of the Nexus.

Hmm this method sounds like pain however, I expect this phone to be %100 flawless as far as hardware goes for the money we are paying for it. Without a contract this phone costs $800 and it is not acceptable to have a screen that has vertical lines on a phone that costs as much as this one.

If you're paying $800 off contract for this phone you aren't looking at your options. VZW sells it for $649. You can import it for $685.
This isn't a defective screen issue, it is how the technology is made. Just because one phone doesn't experience it to the same caliber as another phone does not mean it isn't simply how the screens are.
The phone is for verizon however i bought from bestbuy mobile. They brought the phone up without my upgrade and the price came out to $800. Thats where i based my price.
Honestly, I will not pay $685 for this phone yet alone $800.
I am a little confused now...should i not exchange it?

The point is no one should ever buy an off contract phone from Best Buy or Amazon, because they make more money by locking you into a two year contract, that is why their off contract prices are ridiculous.
And unless you want to be like that one guy and unbox every single phone in the store until you find one that doesn't have the bands, you should just keep it because it isn't a screen defect the one he found after doing that just doesn't experience it as much as some of the other ones.

I am a little disappointed tho. I mean all this hype and screen doesnt even function how it supposed to. Leaving the screen brightness high sucks the battery life.
I actually turned brightness all the way up, even then i still get vertical lines on grey backgrounds.
I dont think that is acceptable, i am going to exchange this phone.
Just tried it in the settings menu by around 5% drops and don't see these lines u speak of. Do u have a link to a sample picture/background to reproduce them?

Your posts are seriously the most worthless waste of bandwidth I've ever read on a forum. I really have to take a look and find the ignore feature. They are just unbearable to read any longer. I'm convinced you just come here to talk **** about a damn cell phone.

Is my Galaxy Nexus screen okay?

Hello. So this is my 6th GNexus that I received today, because I just seem to be getting phones with the same dark screen (in my eyes they are dark). This is at 25% brightness.
Or maybe I'm used to my first brand new one that was just perfect to me? It was naturally bright. The current one I have seems good, but the keyboard is darker and in the notification greys and browser bar grays u can notice the color differences. When I go to a website that's background is reddish/organish it's pretty noticeable there.
As of me typing this, I spoke to Verizon and said if on my 7th GNexus (next one coming Thursday 3/29) had the same issue with the screen they'd be consulting it with Samsung to see if it's a software issue or the LED inside the screen is messed up or something.
Thanks. So how would you describe a "good" screen? Pictures appreciated, just making sure I don't have one that's fine and I'm freaking out about it.
Are you for real or just trolling?
Seriously? Complaining about a dark screen when you have the brightness set to 25%? The screen is supposed to be dark the lower you set the brightness at; that's just common sense, geez...
I think I've finally decided to stop coming to XDA. Coming to these forums just gives me a headache now. All the absolutely idiotic threads/posts by what seem to be either trolls or complete retards. /endrant
I'm for real.
It's at 25% brightness and I've held not one but two GNex in my hands that looked fine at 25%. Something is wrong.
If the forums give you a headache and you can't tell the difference between trolling and reality, welcome to the interwebz. /endrant.
Maybe the thread wasn't completely necessary, but there's the occasional decent person that likes to input on the situation.
Let's start by clearing your headache, you didn't need to reply, if it was a "idiotic thread by a troll or compete retard". Lol.
Let's look at the one constant between all 7 phones, you. I've got one guess where the problem is located.

In case I'm still being looked upon as a troll, does anyone know the symptoms for a "bad" screen? I searched and read the thread about what's okay and not for a Galaxy Nexus screen but seems like I have some good stuff and some bad stuff, which is confusing.
User error. Obviously.

So I'm guessing you've had a look at the sticky on this forum? I don't see what's so confusing about it? You either have unattainable expectations on what the screen 'should' be or your the most unlucky person ever. There's no way 7 devices in a row would be faulty.

Yeah, you got me thinking now, anyway here are some pictures, while I'm not a pro photographer I tried my best as I was in a hurry. These are taken from an HTC Thunderbolt. (25% brightness) These look right?
Anything odd in the color of the yellow coins in Temple Run?
Red and Brown seem odd to any of you?
Keyboard, here's where I really think it's a bit dark, look behind the keys. This is a screenshot but if the issue shows even in the Android OS Screenshot.. isn't that an issue?

i think a visit to your friendly neighborhood eye doctor will do wonders. or an eyepatch so the looks you get won't be so bad.
Ehh a nice amount of sarcasm there but, that can mean 2 things good or bad, so you think it's alright?
Looks fine. I've seen pictures that were easily worse.
Sent from my Nexus in Texas.
Okay, thanks huge sigh of relief.
So the other ones I had that were brighter, were just different screens but they weren't bad (nor was this one)? Right?
Looks just fine to me.
You have the brightness at 25% though? If the screen on another one looked fine at 25% (maybe a demo in the store?) maybe you should think about the lighting where you used it. If it was inside and fine at 25% but you are using yours outside at 25% then that is likely the problem. The brightness needs to be higher in brighter rooms / brighter days.
Try setting it to auto and see if it works fine for you that way. If it does, then you are using it as intended AND it works for you, so no worries. Remember, it is an AMOLED display and is designed to be more power efficient than other displays, so having it on auto should be just fine.
I personally set mine to 20% on another phone (totally different type of display, though the backlight itself might be similar, IDK) and its fine until a bit of sunlight hits it. I then switch it back to auto when I exit a building or enter a place with those obnoxiously bright halogen lights.
I suspect that is the issue you are having, how you are using it vs how it is designed to be used.
I know what you mean. But the 3rd GNex and the first I had, everything on the phone was literally brighter on 25% brightness. So I guess every phone has a different screen? (The phones with working/good) screens.
What I mean by "brighter" is for example the background of the keyboard set when your going to type a message, it varies a lot in brightness from phone to phone.

galaxy nexus screen degradation over time...

Hi all. My screen is degradating over time.
I bought the phone on christmas.
Screen was perfect now I can see some horizontal lines with different hue also in non gray background.
I can see this lines on this forum also. My display is at 50% brightness.
Have you noticed the same?
My first Nexus had this from day one. Purchased on release day in November and it didn't get worse up until I sold it last week. My new Nexus is much better and doesn't have any lines, etc.
I think you'll find the majority of units shipped before the new year will have this issue to some extent. The newer screens are much better.
I once had six units powered on in the dark next to each other. Three were built in November, and the other three in late December. The three from November had lines and a more yellow hue as opposed to the December built models which had no lines and a more natural hue.
Yes I see the horizontal lines too. They are growing over time. Specifically on the color red. Install dead pixel detect and check each color and you'll see what I mean.
It really doesn't bother me much though.

My bad. So it is just a higher resolution gradient?
The two issues here are un-related. He's not talking about gradient banding. He's talking about physical flaws in the panel which manifest themselves as variation in intensity of light output from diode to diode.

True, the displays are just purely crap. There is absolutely no way around it. You might not see or care about it, but it is the simple truth. Samsung didn't deliver on the display. Great phone otherwise, but... I suppose nothing is perfect.

This is actually something different than the gradient fix in settings menu. My horizontal lines, specifically on color red, grow over time and they are actually hardware related. The actual pixels are changing. And its related to heat too. Hotter temp brings them out, and cooling off reduces them.
Also I can see them spreading gradually. They only hit the top half of the screen, but expand towards the bottom too as it heats up.
Again though this doesn't affect me at all! Its not noticeable and I'm not worried about it.

I just never seen 4 phones in a row have issues with the display, and different issues each time?
I can see one going bad, get RMA and fix it, but 4 in a row? Something is very wrong. If this phone cost me $50 I can careless, but when you spend $800 or more you expect it to work 100%
My samsung plasma TV actually has problems unfortunately it happened about 6 months after the 1 year warranty expired so nothing I can do.
I just have a real bad taste with samsung and not sure what I will do for my next phone but I got time to worry about it.
Is this possibly because of the pentile display? I hate the grainyness. It was PATHETIC at first but I fixed a lot of it with some color control tweaks. I'm lucky it did make a big difference. Phone looks beautiful now.

Thinking of trading my s4 in for something else...

Had my s4 for about two weeks and I've only encountered problems with it. It scratches easily, the screen smearing in the settings, the screen flickering when opening and closing the keyboard on low brightness, the stuttering when opening and closing apps and swiping left to right on the home screen, the pixels looking terrible when watching a movie scene in low lighting. Im disappointed in Samsung. A quad core device shouldnt have all of these problems. Especially if we're shelling out 630 dollars for these phones.

i am not sure if you have noticed this but the bezzle more like around the side of the phone where the aluminum body is has a plastic film covering all around (you have to look closely) , maybe the film is scratched try peeling that off and see if you notice the scratches anymore.

I have gone caseless about 50% of the time since day one launch and my phone is still flawless. Not a single blemish anywhere. The bezel dents far less easily than my S2 that is for sure.
I get the lag from swiping left to right when touch wiz first loads, it is smooth after that. Try another launcher if you don't like that as that is touch wiz only, not the hardware. Or wait for a custom kernel.
Or get the HTC One which is nearly the same hardware aside from the screen. Or sell and try the ASOP S4?
Your post gives off an air of trying to bring others down with you. Not sure how successful you will be with that here. There are alot of ppl who like there phones on this forum

Amen to that! I traded my s2 for the s4 and the worst issues I get are lint and a crash here or there from playing Ravensword 2 while keeping other apps open (which is my own fault). Are you able to have your phone replaced? Cause it sounds like they sold you a returned phone by mistake or intentionally

To protect any scratches I use 2 cases. One flip cover to protect screen and another gel case outside it to protect edges. And its not bulky at all.
I am going to order s view case with extra holding (no need to change back cover ) to replace this combination.

it's there a slim non bulky kickstand case yet? I know to look on Amazon or eBay but do anyone have personal recommendations?

I think its your phone dude, I don't have any of those issues minus the slightest amount of lag when wiz kicks in. Return it, tell them it stopped turning on, no Samsung boot screen, nothing, that way they don't run you through a million troubleshooting steps.
Everyone here loves their phone, I think you need to just be patient and wait for devs to make some ROM tweaks and it'll blow the HTC One out of the water...

Not trying to bring any one down with me. I'm expressing my experience with the s4. I love it but there are a lot of issues.

Well I hope we change your mind man, the more people with these phones is more incentive for the devs to work on them!!
I feel like people here are disillusioned by their own experience with the device. If you're honestly saying you don't notice a screen smear at the lowest brightness or any kind of banding whatsoever in greys at the lowest brightness, you're obviously not using an S4, or you have some rare perfect unit that Samsung had blessed by their unicorn god.
I've personally played with three S4's including my own which I've obviously spent an extensive number of time with. The AMOLED screen at low brightness definitely has a number of artifacts which someone who is sensitive too could find annoying or troublesome. I personally am used to it, because the Galaxy Nexus had the same issues at low brightness, even worse in some cases. I find it really hard to believe that all three units I used were broken in some regard and I find it even tougher to believe because AMOLED has had this problem for a while now.
As for the Touchwiz lag, that will most likely be corrected via software. As flashing Faux's kernel and using interactive governor pretty much removes the lag completely. It's obviously some type of governor scaling issue.
The other issue the S4 has is the audio crackling with low impedance IEM's. Currently there is no workaround, aside from using different headphones as Samsung calls my UE900's "not compatible" with their device. The reason why I played with three different S4's is because of this problem, which was present in all three S4's to a varying degree of annoyance.
Don't get me wrong -- the S4 is a great device, I'm keeping mine for the time being, but to pretend like it's some flawless experience is downright incorrect. It has a number of design issues that need to be remedied in order for me to go ahead and purchase another Samsung S(Anything) in the future.
Mass hysteria. Can't wait for this device. Switching to T-Mobile tomorrow =]

Bless the unicorns, I don't have these issues. Any of them aside from touchwiz lagging after a reboot. I've turned my brightness all the way down and used the stick keyboard, Swiftkey and Swype with zero flickering; I've watched videos with no issues and examined several grey panels desperately trying to find faults and coming up blank.

Like I said before, warranty your device. Smearing and audio crackling are a known issue but only on certain batches mailed out. Surely, future ROMS will have audio patches to fix that but the screen is internal, obviously. We haven't figured out what caused it or who all has the issue but its a known thing. I wont speak on behalf of T-Mobile but being an employee I recommend just to tell them it randomly boots or doesn't power on at all; so you don't have to go through a million troubleshooting steps.
Just don't do the OTA when you get it lol

THANK YOU. +10000 I definitely LOVE my s4, but these problems are VERY annoying. My OCD is making me want to return it. Apple has definitely won the war of UI smoothness.

Well Apple has a couple of distinct advantages in that area. For starters they only have to worry about their hardware. So they can optimize all their software, SDK's, drivers, etc all for their one device. They also prioritize the graphics above everything else on the phone. Nothing short of a kernel panic is going to make the graphics hiccup/jitter in iOS. These two examples apply to other areas as well, like their audio processing latency being so low. Despite what people here say, the iPhone is definitely a sweet device.
That being said, if you haven't already you should try the HTC One. The LCD screen doesn't suffer from the same problems the AMOLED does. The interface is also much smoother. Plus you get better front facing speakers. You obviously trade off SD Card (which was one of the reasons I didn't get the One), replaceable battery, the S-Features if you like them, etc. But overall I think the One is a better experience if little things bother you.
You can try trading in your S4, but you're probably just going to end up like me, trading it and receiving a device with the same problems back.
