Where are apps located on MTP view? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have searched the forum and can't seem to find any help on this, but where are the apps located on the MTP view for the system? I am trying to load backup files for certain apps and can't find the folders for the life of me.
I really miss the easy SDCARD view .

You will not be able to see apps in MTP view, use Astro or any other file viewer on the device. I am not sure if its possible to use something like airdroid to see or not.

I tried using Astro but could not locate. Do you guys know where they are on the system folders?

Using ES file explorer I see:
the apk files in /system/app
the binaries in /system/bin
most of the data is in various directories on /sdcard
Try using ptp mode instead of mtp; it seems to show more file types, at least on my win7
Airdroid is also good.

You can't see /system with MTP. MTP/PTP allow you to access the "sdcard" which is really just another folder of sorts.

that's a known down side of the MTP
just use root browser or Rom Toolbox

[Q] All files not showing on PC

I have tried with file manager and found the files i was looking for in android/data/something but when i connect my GN to my PC (win7 32bit) i only get a few folders and files,
I have tested with both USB modes and I only get the basic folders such as
Alarms, Android, DCIM, Downloads, Movies, Music, Notifications, Pictures, Podcasts, Ringtones.
and the file manager reports more folders present :/
also the files i'm trying to access are within the android folder (which is visible on PC) but in filemanager there are 10-20 folders found in android/data that are missing on PC. PC only shows 3 folders in android/data
It also appears to be possible for other users to access the exact same file at the exact same filepath, why can't I?
is there a feature on GN or ICS that makes it impossible to access some files from the PC or is this a bug/flaw?
in case you guys need to know what files i'm trying to access, it's the game files to GTAIII
I kind of have a similar problem.
When i connect my phone to a windows 7 computer it mounts okey and shows me the files. If I create a folder on the phone from windows explorer, unmounts the device, I can not see this folder on the phone via a file manager unless i reboot my phone. This also applies the other way around. If I create a folder on the phone from a file manager, then mount the phone to the computer, I can not see the folder until I reboot my phone.
Is there a fix for this? Is it a bug? How can i resolve this? It's very frustrating.
MTP/PTP doesn't offer all the features the full USB transfer mode has. Search will help you find the pros and cons of this.
Workaround: Use an app like WiFi File Explorer or Airdroid.

[Q] Why do folders on /SDCARD appear empty through computer?

This is driving me crazy. I want to copy the TitaniumBackup folder from my GNEX to my Win7 PC.
Looking at the folder through Root Explorer on the GNEX all appears normal. When I look at the folder through my computer the folder is showing but the contents are backups that are almost a month older than are on the GNEX. If I delete everything in that folder FROM THE PC it still exists on the GNEX.
It is like it is looking at a different folder entirely however looking and searching through ROOT EXPLORER there are no other TITANIUM BACKUP folders.
This happens with a lot of apps. Example: I created a ZIP file using ROOT EXPLORER. The zip, viewing through ROOT EXPLORER is located in the /SDCARD/SPEEDSOFTWARE/ZIP folder however when I look at the SPEEDSOFTWARE folder via my PC the folder is empty.
I have tried both MTP and PHOTO mode. This happens with a lot of folders when trying to view them from my PC connection. Some stuff is there and a lot is not.
Hmmm, there is a /MNT/SDCARD and a /SDCARD folder (I don't know much about Linux) and the files I am NOT seeing on my PC are in /MNT/SDCARD and the files I am seeing are in /SDCARD. Why are there 2 different "SDCARD" folders? I changed the TitaniumBackup to save to /SDCARD instead of /MNT/SDCARD but the backups are still not viewable (or copyable) from my computer. I just don't get it.
So the question is, how do you "backup" the contents of the "SDCARD" directory if you can't see the files when plugged into the PC?
Well, after comparing all the "visible" files on my computer when I access the GNEX via MTP vs what I see using ROOT EXPLORER the ONLY 2 folders NOT visible from my PC are TITANIUMBACKUP and SPEEDSOFTWARE (thus is the ROOTEXPLORER app data). Why would they be hidden?
It's due to how the Android MTP service works. It hasn't scanned your internal storage for the new files/directory to present to your PC yet.
Download and run an app called SDrecan from the Market. This will force the media services on your phone to rescan the device.

Absolutely amazing! Thank you so much! I have been pulling out my hair for days!
thank you! I had the same problem!worked flawlessly!

this app is force closing. i cant even run it . do you have any idea? just today was working fine , i installed a custom rom and now when i try to put another roms on my sd card , i get this message that it's empty
trickster mod also has a media rescan option in bottom of tools section if this is helpful to you, I have to use it after using the "a better camera app" in order for pics to show in gallery without reboot

how do i see all files on my phone

Ok i just got the Galaxy nexus (verizon), Im trying to transfer HI-Res texture packs to .n64oid, Yet the GN doesnt mount as Mass storage so the folder doesnt pop up.
Im rooted and running CM9, When connected i see the option MASS STORAGE but its not highlighted.
any way around this?
I do have the GN toolkit incase that helps.
USB Mass Storage is not supported on the GNex.
Either use ADB or some app that does things wirelessly.
what kind of apps do it wirelessly?

Don't really know, but I think there are a few, like Wifi Explorer, Airdroid, etc.
If all you want to do is copy a file to the /data directory, why not just use MTP to copy it to /sdcard and then user Root Explorer (or something like it) to move it where you want it?
I would personally just do it over ADB. Open a command prompt in the direcotry where you have your adb.exe file and type:
adb shell
su
Now you have full access to the file system.
ill try this... THANK U FOR HELPING
just did what i needed with ROOT EXPLORER. Thanks for ur help. i dont know why i didnt think about it

MTP and hidden files

Hello,
THere is a strange thing with the mtp mode, when i connect my phone. Ican explore it go to the directories. No problem. BUT, i don't see the hidden files or hidden directories in the explorer. The file are or directories begin with a .. I see it in the note ii with asto os es file explorer, but when i caonnect i can't see them. In windows of course i put the possiblity to see hidden system file but no change
Any idea
Tha,ks
I have the same Problem I simply solved it by going into the default file explorer enabling hidden files and copying the files into other directories which I can access on the PC.

Yes why not, but if i understand in mtp mode no hidden files, in the windows explorer. What a shame, really i dislike MTP protocol, the usb mass storage was more easy
Thanks

Can't move some files, can't create some folders

I don't know how else to describe this issue I'm having:
Essentially sometimes I cannot create new folders, either in an explorer app (ES File Manager, Explorer (free, not Root Explorer), or other file manager) or when connected to my computers via USB. Sometimes I can do both. Similarly, sometimes I cannot move files from one directory to another, both using file manager or when connected to computer over USB. It seems random, I think?
An example of this is I downloaded a PDF file from SharePoint using Chrome. The file is downloaded to the /Downloads directory by default. I wanted to move this to a different directory (/Documents), but the cut+paste operation failed. ES File Manager says the operation can't be completed, Explorer just sits there and doesn't say anything. When trying to do the same thing over USB connection, Windows just sits there saying the device is busy, and it'll sit there indefinitely. But an OGG file I downloaded from Dropbox was free to be moved to and from several directories when I was testing file operations.
Basically it's like my device doesn't want to play nice with files and folders. I tried doing a factory reset, but that didn't seem to help. Do you think completely reformatting the phone (as in fastboot format userdata, and a fresh ROM + kernel install) would help? It seems drastic, but at the same time being unable to move files and folders is very strange and likely hard to pinpoint the culprit.
I'm rooted (using traditional SuperSU root) running Pure Nexus 12/01/2015 ROM and ElementalX 0.07 kernel (Enforcing disabled). I doubt any of those 3 factors are the cause of it, but every detail might help, right?
Update: It looks like a permissions issue. Please see post below.
OK an update to this, I discovered that some folders that I thought I had deleted using ES File Manager are still showing up in USB storage when I'm hooked up to a computer. That is to say that what I see using a file manager versus what I see while connected to a computer are different.
Further to this, I am now getting "Permission denied" by the file managers when I try to copy and paste anything from anywhere to any other place. I have booted into TWRP to run Fix Permissions already. It looks like everything now has rwxrwx---, which means to me 770? It should be 775, no?
Any ideas what might be causing this permissions issue?

For this, I read somewhere that the latest ES File app has a recycling bin for when you delete apps. So, that needs to be emptied too.

I did indeed clean out the Recycle Bin (and subsequently disabled it), but the problem persists. But thanks for pointing that out!
OK, an interesting discovery:
If I am on my device and using ES File Explorer and if I am in the path /storage/emulated/0/* then I am unable to copy/move files and directories, as I've described above.
If I am on my device and using ES File Explorer and if I am in the path /sdcard/* then I am unable to copy/move files and directories, as I've described above.
If I am on my device and using ES File Explorer and if I am in the path /data/media/0/* then I am able to do anything I damn well please.
Now this makes a bit of sense to me, given the permissions for each directory. For example, when viewing the permissions of a file or folder when in /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0, I can only see the permissions as "Readable: Yes, Writeable: Yes", but I cannot change said permissions. However, when I view the permissions for something when under /data/media/0 then not only can I see the explicit permissions "rw-rw-r--" I can also change it if I wanted to.
I suspect this might be more than just the ROM. Perhaps I did not flash the system.img correctly when I first went through the process? Is this possible?
