It is very easy on MUIU or CM7 ROM with theme manager, but on stock rom you must modify systemUI.apk for that.
You're wrong mate, battery icons are situated in framework-res.apk not in systemUI.apk
To modify the battery icons,
-Extract the framework-res.apk from your rom.
-Rename it to .zip
-copy the battery icons that you want and paste them to res/drawable hdpi or hdpi v4 depending of roms.
That's it.

Yes you're right. I made a mistake. The SystemUI.apk contains wifi, gps, GSM, 3g, 4g and quick panel icons not battery. Thanks for correction.

Bro, what program do I need to do what you mentioned above? And how to save back to the framework-res.apk? Any guide or reference? I love the bubble icon an I wish to cook mine. Thanks
Hi,
You need winrar or winzip to open the framework-res.zip (it's initially framework-res.apk that you need to rename as explained before)
both programs are downloadable for free...just ask Mr google and he'll provide you the links for download

Or you can customise a lot of this in a web interface: UOT kitchen
(google it)
Many of the bat-mods (+ other theme) have been available in UOT kitchen since long time ago.

Hi,
The drawable hdpi is inside /res
when you rename framwork-res to .zip double click on it then you'll see folder named "res" double click on it and you'll find drawable hdpi file that contains the battery icons and other things.
The link is working correctly, I'll see later when I go home if I can upload elsewhere .

On my phone (Onecosmic's ICS Port RC1) the icons actually had to be put into SystemUI.apk.
I tried the trick with framework-res.apk but it didn't work. After I dropped the icons into the right folder in SystemUI.apk, the thing started working.
One peculiar thing though. My battery icon says 71%, but battery stats in Settings say 73%.

Strange..I haven't tried ICS yet but it's good to know that files have been relocated elsewhere.
All the Ics roms for SGS available until now are in beta stage and there are many things not working as it should be.
The battery icons are not the problem for you but it's maybe a bug with the rom itself.
Try to ask about it in the rom thread.

I've been reading the theme guides and, time permitting, would like to start playing around. I've been comparing files from the stock theme template to crakes battery percent mod found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793805&highlight=battery+mod and have been trying to figure out how to use it in another theme. Is it as simple as adding the extra stat_sys_battery_#.png's or does something else have to be done to the framework-res.apk to get the phone to point to the added pngs? I hope thats understandable, thanks in advance for your help all!

If your theme has 1% intervals already its just a matter of swapping the png files. If the theme don't your gonna have to devompile the apk and edit 3 xml files then recompile

okay, ya thats what i was wondering. any help on the xml files to edit and how? i've got apk manager and have it decompiled, i dont see anything that jumps out.
EDIT: okay i've got in the drawable folder stat_sys_battery, stat_sys_battery_charge, stat_sys_battery_charge_err_vinsq, stat_sys_battery_charge_vinsq, stat_sys_battery_vinsq. my guess is its 3 of those, i guess i can just compare the stock theme with the stock battery mod to see what to do.

in general, yes, but i may not know how for these purposes. what might i be missing?
There's an even easier way.
start adb
and type adb pull /system/framework/framework-res.apk framework-res.apk
(grab frameworkTW-res.apk*i think* if you want it for touchwiz instead)
Next
go here UOT Kitchen
select flashable .zip
go through the stuff
upload the framework-res.apk you just pulled.
wait a bit download package and move to sd card then browse and install it and reboot.

basically i want to work in a battery % mod into the theme from AOSP Magic (partially just to see if i can do it ). when you say "has any edited .9.pngs" do you mean if i edit any? or if the theme contains any that are already edited.

ya i'm a little confused at that point on how i'd handle that. anywhere i can read up on that?
so basically if the theme i want to mod has .9.pngs that were edited from stock, when i decompile and recompile with the new xmls its going to break something? if so, what would i do? use the battery % mod theme and dump the drawable-hdpi folder into the apk after?

gotcha, perfect thanks!
Adding Ext Power as well as % Battery Mod is very easy thanks to Jim Panses super Arbeit
Many thanks also to Dena and whiskeybro for their Theme as well as vukandric for the Gingerbread theme.
This is how I did it on Darky's Rom, but it should theoretically work for any Rom based on JPU.
Possibly the Rom needs to be deodexed what most custom roms are anyway.
You will possibly lose animations but there is an easy way to get them back!
Read end of post for this!
Ok let's get started with the simple (but limited) method.
Step 1:
Download the theme from Dena, the Gingerbread Theme as well as the framework-res.apk attached to this post. Put them on your SD card.
Step 2:
Install Dena's Theme with extended Power Menu
Step 3:
Install Gingerbread Theme
Step 4:
With Root Explorer copy the framework-res.apk file out of this thread to /system/framework
Your system will most likely crash after that and reboot with the new framework-res.apk active. Then change the permissions to 644 meaning all boxes in the first column selected as well as the topmost row of the second column selected. All else unselected.
Done!
This should work for any rom, but I can't confirm it yet.
For anyone interested in making their own themes compatible with ext pwr + % battery here is the more complicated way to do this and the way I actually did it:
Step 1:
You will need Dena's Theme again as a base as well as a another theme that already has the % battery but lacks the power menu. (It work too if you don't have % battery yet, but then only for the ext Power Menu)
Step 2:
Extract the framework-res.apk of each theme.
Step 3:
copy everything from framework-res.apk\res\drawable-hdpi of the theme you want to use into the same (sometimes also called "...\drawable-hdpi-v4") folder within the framework-res.apk of Dena's Theme.
Do not extract the framework-res-apk files. Use 7-zip to open them and do the copying!
Step 4:
Do the steps from the "simple" guide but instead of gingerbread theme you use your theme of choice and the framework-res.apk you use is the one you created.
Animations:
Many Themes use custom animations now.
The most common is the fly-in animation.
These animations might be lost with this method.
To get them back simply download the "Animations.zip" from this thread. Extract and move to /sdcard/AndroidThemes and then install with Metamorph (app can be found on market)
Here is another way provided by kenkiller
kenkiller said:

differently themed maybe, but it should still work as they are all based on the same framework-res.apk (that of JPU)
Animations are gone, but I have a good idea how to fix this
Animations are what puts Darkyy's ROM apart. Apart from his very good themed colors & graphics.
Thank you for the credits!

Thx for the info
Giving it a 5-star. Helpful.
it's pretty easy to regain the animations if u prefer the original.
Just extract the anim folder inside darkky's framework-res.apk with 7zip, and then overwrite the same folder and contents with the framework-res.apk you intend to copy to ur phone. But in the case of animations, it's needed to clear dalvik cache in CWM.
This actually does work on most custom roms, as long as they are deodexed.. Great work though..
Is it also possible to only add ext menu and keep glass window lock screen? I like the instant sms reader

Works also on RC4.2 because there are no changes to SystemUI.
Thanks telispetsinos for the tip!
I read that lippol94 mod works on RC4.1 but just in case are any changes to SystemUI.apk in the RC4.1 I did this MOD.
Thanks to lippol94 for his work from RC3.1 and to everyone else for contribution.
I did this mod from RC3.1 MOD by lippol94 for my own use.
All credits goes to lippol94 from which I copied the files for this MOD and of course to ICSSGS TEAM who made ICS possible on i9000.
RC4.1/RC4.2 are ODEXED ROM's.
The MOD is only for battery percentage, no other changes.
Backup before updating.

No need to. If you are odex then flash this mod and then with the apk open in a zip extractor drag and drop the .pngs inside drawable-hdpi and that should be ok. Don't add any files. If you have issues with the apk not working then you could try bringing across the manifest from the other apk (if you have used ALL of the .pngs from the other .apk?) as I believe the manifest has MD5 sum checks in it, or you can break down the manifest file in notepad++ and copy all the checks into your own manifest? That may allow you to flash...follow the tut in the link that someone else posted above. what ever is easier
Edit: I would not follow that tute in the link posted. That will not work.
If you have disixda's kitchen you will see an option to deodex apks. If you see how that script works you can reverse it, baiscally it will drag out of the apk the dex file and make you an .odex file
we can all sacrifice a little space for optimised usage, but the .odex file AFAIK is not actually any benefit in system performance, only boot performance/speed?

I've also tried before with the method suggested by Qobok, but the odexing process failed..., I've to study more odex/deodex process...

first of all,I really appreciate ur help guys and I can never thank u enough for ur help.
ok,I looked all over the XML file and can't find the exact line to edit,i thought its cuz im using a modified systemUI,so I decompiled the original systemUI and extracted tw_status_bar.xml from layout to compare but still can't find the exact line to edit.
I found one line only with the same color code u mentioned so I changed it and recompiled, replaced and fixed permissions then rebooted and the status bar disappeared ! so I replaced again in system/app and this time wiped both caches and still status bar wont show up ! so ofcorse I put back my original systemUI AND got it back
I've attached my systemUI so may be if any of u have some time u can look at it and have a play ! ??

ok,I looked all over the XML file and can't find the exact line to edit,i thought its cuz im using a modified systemUI,so I decompiled the original systemUI and extracted tw_status_bar.xml from layout to compare but still can't find the exact line to edit.
I'm running stock jb 4.1.2 LSD AND its odexed
once again thank u very very much for ur time and help

hmm not sure were you found SystemUI.apk your working off of but its a freaking mess.
It looks like you compiled it with a chainsaw , Missing Dex etc all kinds of bad error jungle when i decompiled....
Anyway I pulled xml from it , made edit and packed it into worthy SystemUI.apk for error free recompile.
I then pulled edited file from apk and gift wrapped it for you vrtheme install.

oh my
Your apk is a mess as seen in screen shot so it would only make sense for you status bar to disappear....heck you should be in boot loops.
And this is only half of errors displayed within apk.
Lets start over,
This thread / forum its not the place for it , In the future you would want to go - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=527
For now get your creation working on device , extract working copy SystemUI.apk , send it to me in PM & I will make color edit to its status tw_status_bar.xml

i'm sure my SystemUI looked twice as bad after my FAILED attempt trying to get a transparent status bar background with white text.
I'm trying to do the same mod of changing the color of the battery percent, but when I open the XML file both on my phone and on my PC, it's almost all scrambled and unreadable. Is there a special encoding it needs to be opened with? I'm using a stock rooted deodexed ROM.

You can't just extract an app and open xml files. The app must be decompiled first, changes made, then recompiled. If you are a noob, I would suggest TickleMyAndroid as a starting place. There is a thread.

understand, thank you for your help anyway
Those icons are controlled in the app itself. Example
The powermanagement icon is not changed in the settings, you need to edit the powermanagement.apk file to see a changed icon in the settings menu.
There are also icons that are controlled in the com.HTC.resources.apk, you can't decompile it but you can open the apk with 7zip and copy out the icons, edit them and copy them back in the apk.
Same is for framework.HTC.res.apk !
And make sure you do not touch the .9.png files. It srews up the apk !!!
Exactly, the problem was in com htc res apk , i change some icons and now everything is working correctly

Mr Hofs is right!
However, i think is better wait the update from the themer
