i can an unlimited min, tex, and data for $70/month through my business. i currently have the gsm nexus with tmobile. was thinking of switching to verizon for the lte speeds. the only thing that i'm worried about it that it doesn't run a completely stock android (verizon crapware) and it won't get updates as quick. also worried about battery life. lte is a battery killer. are there any cons to switching?

Well updates *do* come directly from Google and the verizon bloatware is a nonissue (just Hide it and you'll never have to worry about it again). If you're worried about battery life just turn off LTE and enjoy great battery life.
Pros? Verizon has *much* better coverage than T-Mobile and LTE is much faster.
but because of the "only 2" verizon apps, are the updates going to come directly from google or do we have to wait for verizon to release it with there "only 2" bloatware apps
The android updates come straight from el goog, the apps should update via the market and not from the rom.

Sure LTE eats more but that is the price to pay for speed

Keep the GSM unlocked GNex and don't buy the Verizon CDMA version that won't allow you to use a sim card from anywhere else. I also have a Skyrocket and it has LTE on AT&T and I really don't notice the difference in speeds from HSDPA+ on the GNex and LTE on the Skyrocket.

If you turn off LTE, 1st you loose signal for a minute or so, 2nd you loose data + cell phone use together, and 3rd you are now stuck on slow CDMA that tops at 500kbps-1.5mbps near Boston area where Tmobile 3G is 2.5-5.5mbps and Tmobile 4G even faster
Now that a buddy whats to buy my Nexus One and HD2 for $500 bucks shipped, I am still thinking about switching to Verizon and get Nexus for $150 or pay $550 for GSM version.

N1 + HD2 for $500?? Heh that's awesome! I have one of each sitting around gathering dust, does he want to buy mine too?
my past experience told me, CDMA is not as good as GSM, why? if your phone decided to sync your email or FB, you won't recieve your phone calls whatsoever.

You can use voice and data at the same time on 3G due to eHRPD.. or that's how it was on the thunderbolt at least.

What? This has never been the case. CDMA phones always have 1x to fall back onto. You just can't use EVDO (3G) while on the phone because the phone defaults to 1x while you are on a call.

I thought voice has priority over data on CDMA, no ? maybe thats why 2 of my friends told me that many of verizon calls go straight to voice mail ....
I switched from T-Mobile to Verizon and never looked back. Verizon's coverage blows away T-Mo's, and LTE is real 4G with real 4G speeds. And why worry about updates? This is a Nexus with all of the development that brings with it. I don't know why you'd ever be on a stock ROM.

Well, I had the same issue a couple of days ago. But the issue was not with the phone....it was with the signal tower. You should call Verizon and see what's going on. Sometimes there are areas where 4G signals are also weak. I spent one night at South Beverly Drive and Wilshire in Los Angeles, and I got no 4G signal whatsover. If you live by the area where there are lots of tall buildings, you probably won't get any data signals. So you might wanna check both.
My first Nexus would lose all signal at random, even if I was in an area with 4 bars of 4G. Swapping the SIM card out didn't work, so I swapped the phone out.
The new one works perfectly in a 4G area, but in a 3G-only area (like where I live), it will drop its data connection a lot. It keeps voice, but the 3G icon disappears. Switching into CDMA-only mode didn't help. Flashing the 4.0.3 radios didn't help. I use a lot of data, so I'm left wondering whether I should swap this phone out, or just give up on having a Nexus.
I don't experience any connectivity issues so far(I live in Fullerton, California), and my brother, 2 of my friends, friends' friend, my girlfriend and her little brother!
It started after the 4G outage... Could have that hurt my phone? I highly doubt it but you never know...hmmm to verizon when I get back home from vacation
EDIT: Been on CDMA and it seems to be working, low bars, but seems to be. Maybe its verizon's network where I am, ill check again tomorrow. Hope its working this is really making me sad I really do love my nexus
Could it be your modem/radio? I'm using a GSM nexus, but I had loads of signal drops on the KK1 modem till I updated to the KK6 modem

I was wondering the same thing. Mine has been sporadic since the outages while my wife's charge is rock solid. I have tried to lose a signal with her charge and it won't do it. 3g is awful on my nexus. It'll be there for a minute or two then gone. Really frustrating cause I love this phone

I've been seeing the same thing but it seems to only happen when I'm on LTE. Example...I just went out and was in a 4G coverage area with full signal. Around every 15-20 minutes I would lose all form of signal for about 30 seconds and it would come back. I've found that switching to CDMA only allows me to maintain a solid connection. During the period that I was experiencing the outages my girlfriends RAZR has been rock solid. Looks like I may be spending some time on the phone with Verizon tomorrow.

This JUST started yesterday...
So, yesterday at work I noticed I had no data...so I did the typical restart...still no data...I shrugged it off and went on my way. As I was driving I had data again. I use wifi at home, so when I got home I didnt notice any issues and honestly kinda forgot about it. Well on my way back to work this morning I looked at my phone...had full 4g service...all seemed well. Then I got to my office...
Now let me explain I DO have 4g in this area but honestly...its only a solid 4g outside. Its not the greatest indoors. Well in my office I only get 4g if I'm standing at the window or one "sweet" spot at my desk. So 99% of the time I'm in 3g. Well to make a long story short my 3g antenna seems to be borked. I can pull 4g fine...on lunch today I was in 4g and it was working great. However, when I'm in 3g I get zero data...my phone doesnt work in 3g only 4g.
I called verizon and they just decided to send me a new phone...
I have rooted my phone and I have put the newest radio on. That was awhile ago though. Tonight I'm going to try flashing a different radio but has anyone else had this problem?
Again I get NO 3g service only 4g. In an area where 4g is spotty thats NOT good.
Thanks!
Yes, I had the same issue. The first Nexus I had gave me spotty 4G service and never went to 3G in the couple of weeks I had it. Amazon sent me a replacement which is rock-solid. I get solid 4G coverage where I should (my wife and several coworkers have LTE phones so I know where I should) and when I don't have that 3G kicks right in.
I think you should definitely expected better results with a replacement. Good luck.
I had chosen to use 3G over 4G to save battery life. After about a week with the phone I began to notice that I can hardly ever get 3G reception any more, even though 4G reception has always been excellent. I don't think it is a problem with the phone, but rather Verizon tinkering with its network.
I was having the same problem all day today.
I switch the phone to CDMA during the day and use the office's WiFi for data. However, I noticed today as I dropped my daughter off at school after lunch that I had voice only and no data. Her school is the first tower north of my office that doesn't have an LTE radio, so I normally just get 3G.
Not today.
I drove back to the office and I was able to get data through the LTE radio, but the data connection would go dead as soon as I switched to CDMA. I thought there might be something wrong with the CDMA tower, but two of my co-workers had Thunderbolts set to CDMA only and they were having no problems getting data connections.
I talked with tech support for a good couple hours this afternoon and they had nothing for me. Eventually I flashed the leaked 4.0.3 radios and CDMA magically started working again.
Did the new radios fixed the problem, or is it just a coincidence?
Hmmm...
I have been having the same issue since yesterday. Verizon said there is no outages in the area. I had no data all the way home from CT to NY and finally when I got home at night 4G worked. 4G was working in and out on my way in so I forced CDMA to see if that worked and I have been unable to get anything since. I have a new SIM coming today, but somehow I do not think that will solve the issue.
I've noticed this too. I was turning my LTE off thinking it would use 3g, but I'm noticing now that many times I either have 4g or no data at all.

I'm having the exact same problems and registered here to see what the resolution is. I'm apprehensive to root as I am still within the 15 day return window and quite frankly for 300$ I think this is total BS. Never had a dropped call, missed or unsent text on the 3g network on my old Dinc and I've lived in the same place for 2 years.
OP- could you keep this updated on how your new device works out?
same exact thing happened to me. I'm already on my second nexus and I didn't want a refurb or to lose root. So I flash android revolution hd , used tb to delete all my apps, and hid all signs of root including deleting su. I took it to Verizon and they gave me a new sim card. It was OK for about a day then started acting up again. So I called them from my wife's phone and they had to reset my number to the network and its been fine since

What do you mean by reset your number to your network? Never heard that term before
I'm not exactly sure, some techs don't know about it. When I had my charge it had no data. So they reset my number and phone to the network and I immediately got data back

As you guys should know, the data connectivity bug was patched yesterday. I had not activated my phone because of that.
So I patched my phone last night, and then activated it over chat support while at work today. It works, but I'm only getting HSPA+ even though I know I'm in a LTE zone...
I doubled checked my data plan to make sure it is an LTE plan... and I also have power cycled the phone. Still no go.
Got any suggestions?
At this point, I'm not really considering keeping the phone anyway. The screen is too slippery to my fingers, the interface has some issues that bug me, and above all I can't make calls comfortably because of the big corners. It pushes against my glasses... not cool.
Not that it matters too much, if you're not planning on keeping the phone. I never lost LTE until after I updated my phone. Now I've lost LTE from time to time, just getting 4G. But doing a soft reset fixes it. But just wish it wasn't happening.

Did you officially upgrade?
I had (and still have) an iPhone for development. I didn't get LTE until I got both a new SIM and ditched my iPhone dataplan for the LTE equivalent. Same price, and still works in the iPhone, so I'm happy.
I'm having LTE issues as well, I'm in the Dallas area and was told the LTE is down. My iPad 3 which has LTE is only getting 4G as well.
So it might be an issue with ATT and LTE, at least here in Dallas.
Did you see if there was an outage?
Call one of the local ATT stores to check.
Good point. I'll check into it, since this makes much more sense then what I had thought was the problem. Especially considering I'd never had the problem before.

No outages reported by my store,
They've told me the problem could be my device. At this point I'm not attached to the phone whatsoever so I'll return it and wait for the galaxy S3, which will be unveiled may 3rd.
Mine was due to an outage here in Las Vegas. Been having super fast LTE since. I'm hooked like crack on this phone & LTE!

I've had this phone now for less than a month. I know it's not a long time, but I think I've got a pretty good idea of how this phone performs. I have not rooted this phone, I am on 4.02 and PRL 15119.
1. The signal problem:
Coming from a Droid2, the first thing I noticed was one or no bars where I used to have full! I was losing data all the time, until I switched to CDMA only. My phone kept switching to LTE and back again, I spent more time in hand offs than connected!
I had the opportunity to have my Nexus, a TBolt, and a Maxx all in my basement together and did a few tests. All three phones had trouble holding LTE here when I was able to run a speed test, they all performed similarly, between 1 and 2 Mbps. When all three switched to CDMA, they displayed one more bar on and off than my Nexus, but showed similar pings and speeds.
I spend a lot of time in my basement and have never had troubles losing data (CDMA only) even though it displays 0-1 bars all the time.
Now, I do occasionally have problems with data, but it's nothing new to me. My Droid2 would show full signal and just not load a page or drop to 1x in locations known to be strong service.
I have not had this problem with the WiFi hand off back to cellular data. This phone switches faster than my Droid2 ever did. Like, by a lot. I work in no service building. Every morning I turn my WiFi on and just turn it off when I get in my car to go home. Usually I have cellular service before I can even turn off the WiFi.
I read a lot of reports where someones Nexus would be outperformed in a 4G speed test by another Verizon 4G device. Not the case here. My tests were constantly the same when comparing between the Nexus, TBolt, and Maxx.
I stopped in the Verizon store and two of the sales dudes had 4G phones, a Razr and another Galaxy Nexus. The Nexus guy was rooted on 4.04 and couldn't break 10Mbps while Razer guy and myself were fighting for 40Mbps.. Maybe there are some lemons out there
All in all, I may have gotten a good device (made in China, go figure), but I do not believe there is a real problem here. If this is your first android on Verizon, I can see where you'd think there are problems. Whenever I pick up my phone, I just ignore the bars and use it. It always works. Even in 3G, this phone loads pages WAY faster than my Droid2.
2. Battery life: I am not a real heavy user. There are times when I'll spend 20 minutes in the bathroom playing angry birds or reading threads, but that's about it. I got the Verizon extended battery before leaving the store with my new phone. This battery has 200mah more juice than the extended battery in my old Droid2.
I think this phone get's great stand by time, I got it to go 3 days off charger with a few calls and texts every day and a little bit of angry birds
On a whole, I'd have to say it get's as good or better life than my last phone.
3. Random reboots: I was constantly pulling my phone out of my pocket to find that it was off. I had gotten quite concerned after reading all the posts about crash reboots. It wasn't until I set the phone down while booting it up that I saw the screen shut off. I knew something wasn't right here and reproduced the shut down by smacking the phone in my palm while it was booting it up.
After looking closely, I noticed the battery would move up and down in its compartment. I solved this by taking some folded paper and taping it to the bottom edge of the battery. Pushing the battery up into the contacts on the phone. I also added some tape/paper to the top of the battery so the cover is pushing it down into the compartment.
Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but I haven't had a single crash/reboot. Just this battery connection problem.
4. Slow screen rotation: I have noticed this, it is VERY annoying when you first get the phone. Habit is to flip it landscape BEFORE launching the app you want to use. This is why you think it's so slow, because the home screen will not flip, it just refuses to. In any app, it flips just like you're used to. A non problem that I'm sure will get fixed.
5. Screen banding: I tried looking at the blank grey screen on any brightness, I could not get the bands I kept reading about. I guess I got lucky!
6. Overheating: I read this phone will try to use 2.4 and 5GHz spectrum's while on WiFi. The first thing I did was set it to 2.4 only and have not had any issues. I use WiFi 8 hours a day every day with out the phone getting hot. I also use the hot spot almost every night, as I don't have a land line internet at home. Never an issue, once again, to the touch this phone was not as hot as my Droid2.
I really like ICS and this phone seems like a keeper. I hope this inspires someone to go out and buy the Nexus!!
Over the weekend I went to the Verizon store to compare the vz nexus signal. Turns out every device with lte read -60 and then nexus -80. But there was one lg phone that displayed both signals at the same time, 1x and lte read -60 and -80. So I wonder does Verizon lte phones actually never show lte signal and always show cdma even when connected to lte?
Just earlier today I compared my Galaxy Nexus at -110 to my dad's Rezound at -80. Side by side at the exact same time. I'm sorry I didn't take a picture.
I'm unrooted stock 4.0.2 right now.
Silly question but did the salesman with the Nexus have LTE on?

This was achieved over a weekend in a strong service area on cdma only. I was at a solid 3/⁴ bars the whole time. I was at a buddys house for a lan, so i was doing my surfing on the computer. I was doing most of my texting in google voice on my pc, so the only use the phone saw was calls and bathroom browsing lol.
Yes, the nexus measures signal differently and this is why it cant hold 4g, it thinks the signal is too weak and lets go before it should. If you had a vzw droid before and know where the strong 3g is, set it to cdma only and see how it performs compared to the old phone. If your getting data drops and dropped calls where you didnt before, then exchange your phone.
Ive read there is a way to force lte only, this would be the best test. But i cant remember how to do it.
Want to add, the ics keyboard is the best one ive ever used. Also, speaker volume on this phone is plenty loud. I have had problems with call quality when i have no bars. Just does not sound good and hard to unserstand people. When i have a bar or more, sounds great. Like theyre in the room.

Definitely lte. I am not sure what vzws theoretical max speed is on 3g, but in our area, max is about 1.7Mbps. I know theoretical is no where near 10Mbps.

Could the differences have been due to your radios? I'm on 4.0.4 with the new radios and I don't break 10Mpbs.
The speed is fast enough for me and I don't remember exactly the speeds I had on the earlier radios. I vaguely remember breaking 10Mpbs at times. I might reflash the older radios and do speed tests.

Now i didnt see these guys screens, i dont know what they were using for testing or what server they were connecting to. He told me hes never been able to break 10 megs. For all i know he rooted and flashed on day one. I cant imagine the members of xda would overlook something so obvious, but who knows. Give it a try eh? For reference all my mentions have been using the official speedtest.net app and chicago servers. Im tempted to root, but im waiting for 4.05 ota and have no idea how to do it. Ill get there eventually
I've found that LTE can vary wildly in speeds. You really need multiple tests with multiple phones at the same location/time.
That said, I saw a huge difference between FC05 and FA02. I found that the best combination for my phone was FC04 on the CDMA radio and FA02 on the LTE radio. It's a good 2mbits faster and much more stable. Signal in my house is borderline, so you really see the difference.

That said, I saw a huge difference between FC05 and FA02. I found that the best combination for my phone was FC04 on the CDMA radio and FA02 on the LTE radio. It's a good 2mbits faster and much more stable. Signal in my house is borderline, so you really see the difference.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I flash the FC04/FA02 combo and in the spot near my house where I am disappointed, 4.5Mpbs down / 2.5 up, I got pretty much the same results. One difference I did notice is that the hybrid combo is slower to switch from 3G than FC05/FC05. I toggled LTE to force 4G connect.
I flashed back. Eager to see what 4.05 brings and also if the latest official IMM76K brings new radios.

Um, it kind of is since most of us come here for help.
Also, if your read the OP he was not complaining about issues as much as addressing them.
