I keep noticing that my brightness is always set higher than where it is supposed to be.
I will lower it to about 1/4 brightness and by the end of the day I notice its at 3/4 brightness all on its own... auto brightness is off and power saving is off
What gives? Anyone else notice this?

Yep. I have he same issue. It has a problem staying where I set it. Especially when I set it to 0% do you use an app to set your level or do you go into settings to do it? I usually use quick settings.

I think I figured it out...at the bottom of the display settings is a box that says auto adjust lcd power or something.. I had it checked I just unchecked it...will report back if it fixes the problem...I'm thinking it will

This is probably why.
Yeah. I typically have mine set at the lowest yet somehow it will change itself on its own.

Is the screen brightness supposed to drastically change when auto brightness is enable. I've been playing around with it and noticed that when auto brightness is enable the screen will drastically change in different lighting conditions (with a couple second delay) For example, ill walk into a darker room the screen will get a lot dimmer after a couple of seconds and v-versu. The reason I asked is that my eco 4g would gradually adjust to point t where I didn't even notice.

I've noticed it rapidly changing like it can't decide a few times, and overall it's a bit too dim outdoors. Coming from an Evo as well and I never noticed it changing either.
Just going to keep an eye on it, not a huge issue for me. Might see if there's any way to override and manually specify the auto brightness thresholds.
There's a second setting called "Auto adjust screen power" further down on the display page - it could be that. It's some sort of thing that analyzes what's actually on the screen and tries to adjust for it.
I think it may just be a samsung thing. I have a Galaxy Tab 7" and I noticed that it was doing this as well, and it drove me crazy. I just went into settings>display>brightness and turned it down manually to just under halfway indoors and if I know Im going outside, i turn it all the way up.
Ive also noticed thst it was auto adjusting even when i had it disabled which was probablt the "power adjustment" thing... But once i caught it turning the brightness down to "prevent overheating"!?

Really?! Thats bizarre. I wonder if it will constantly have the screen down while wireless tether is running.

Thanks. I also have auto adjust disabled. Since others are seeing it then I assume its a Samsung thing. Ill wait to see if others confirm. BTW this may just be me being a geek. I notice every little thing. The other is that the buttons at the bottom of the phone aren't as sensitive as the eco.

A tip I read somewhere but haven't tried yet is to turn auto brightness off and when you do, hold down on the notification bar (don't pull it down, just hold a finger on it) and slide left or right to adjust brightness on the go. Not for sure if it works but give it a try (I'm chargin my phone while it's off now so I can't yet).

It works. I just tried it. That is pretty cool!
Worked for me too. That's great. Thanks. Where did you read that? Are there other tips?

This was a feature in the original epic as well. It is pretty cool. I just use this to change brightness . The only time i change is when i go out in the sun.

Can't remember anymore besides the screen shot one which has been mentioned. Tap home and the power button simultaneously. Also can't remember where I read it.

I would honestly say its a combination of things BC I have used roms where its totally obvious (on froyo) where on others its completely impossible to notice the change.

They kept the good features from the Epic. I like the feature in "Contacts" where you can swipe right on a contact to call them and left to send a message as well

I've had the brightness at the max, and turned off the Auto Adjust Screen Power option. Just while browsing XDA the screen dimmed, and when looking at the brightness setting it states "To avoid overheating, maximum brightness has been reduced.". This has happened at least three different times.
I'm hoping this isn't a serious issue. Have you had it do that multiple times for you as well?
Do the touch key lights just stay off when the phone is low on battery because right now mine are off and I have it on always on but my battery is very low.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
If you do not use any batterh saver app, the system just acts as you set up it on settings > display > touch key light duration
You can change the time from there.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
But if your touch light is always off on low battery then you may need to check wether any application is intercepting your default settings.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
you did not answer my question...
it happened when my phone went into critical mode maybe it was just an bug because after it died and I turned it back on they were on.
My second post. Which rom are you using? If you do not use any tweaked version nor any battery saver app, system won't turn off the light.

Mine shut off once the battery gets critically low, also screen dims even though I have auto brightness off.
It makes sense why it does that though.
This past week the stock Samsung internet browser app dims when opened. Then when I close it the phone goes back to the brightness level it was at before opening up the browser. only happens when using the Samsung stock browser. Anyone else having this problem?
Stock AT&T GSIII
Edit: Also wanted to add that this is not happening on my wife's GSIII.

Check display settings. There is an option to change the screen tone to reduce battery usage. Try unchecking that.

Thanks for the reply but just unchecked it and it's still doing the same thing. Even tried toggling on and off auto brightness and it still does the same thing. It's very strange.
Try turning off powesaver.

I'm chalking this up to a bug. I have a friend with an S3 with this exact problem. No amount of settings changing would fix it. I'm pondering doing a factory reset on his and seeing if that fixes the problem.
I was having the same issue. Turning off power save mode fixed it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Its not a bug. I was able to make this happen or not happen by changing a few settings, but I don't remember which ones because I'm on AOKP.
But it definitely is a battery saving feature, so turn off all battery saving stuff and then try it.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
The Samsung gs3 browser has its own display brightness settings that are independent of your screen brightness settings. While in the browser press menu and you should see a screen brightness option. You can select between 3 levels of brightness or set your own slider.
Thanks everyone...I found the culprit.
For anyone else having this problem, it is under the phone settings, power saving, I unchecked "Background color" which says "Change background color to save power in internet"

Something, I don't know if it's a specific app, it doesn't seem like anything in particular, makes the screen bright, not sure the exact brightness, always after I use the stock brightness widget on 0% which works initially. Anyone know the fix? Thanks. If you need to know my ROM, I have forgotten at this point. Let me know how to check that. Couldn't find it in settings. Actually it's bombardier
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
Ah ha! It's the "touch key light duration" setting set at "always on" that did it. Anyone have this issue? I don't mind just ignoring it and changing the setting. But a fix would be nice
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
No, that was a false alarm. Turns out the screen goes bright on it's own at night, as if it's reading off the light sensor. What gives?

So I'm trying to figure some things out on my own, but one of which I cannot figure out.
So whenever my phone's battery reaches 5%, the brightness level is LOCKED onto the lowest possible brightness setting. I can't make it more, or less and it's really annoying.
I'm using stock rooted 4.1.2 with ktoonsz conservative kernel, nothing crazy.

Try using an app to control the brightness. Look for "Screen Adjuster" in the Play store, it may allow you to use a higher brightness at a low battery level.

Most likely to conserve the last bit of energy it has left. So if you can't get to a charger right away, at least you'll have a tiny bit more of screen time

Yeah but during the day, the brightness gets so low that I can barely see it. I'd like to manually control the level of brightness and get rid of this "automatic" thing.

Yes I do. Obviously it's something out of the ordinary or else everyone would be complaining about it and it seems like it's just me.
I would agree with lakesoccer2 n just add an app to see if u can control it that way. One other thing, did you go into settings and click on display and then on brightness to see if the automatic box has a check in it? If you unchecked the box then you should be able to control your brightness. Hope this helps
