[Q] compiled rom not installing - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a question,
While trying to flash a custom ROM (ICS) it does not seem to be creating the system directory. I have enough space, I am ext 4. I could post the ROM if someone wants to look at it for me.
I flashed the ROM successfully and rebooted. Hangs on HTC screen. Pulled the battery and rebooted into recovery. Adb shell showed that /system is empty.
I have compiled and flashed several ROMS but have never had this happen.
What causes this?
Thanks,
Jeff

theres alot of things that could cause this... to narrow it down a little, you should give us more info... like, when flashing a ROM... does it give an error? if yes, whats that error?

[Q] Fast Sense rom for Desire...

Hi XDA
Could any of you guys provide me with some advice on which rom to chose if I am looking for a fast sense rom. I have tried acesmod and found it to be rather slow on my Desire (maybe I am doing something wrong, but all in all the rom works just very slow).
I have heard great things about insert coin but I can’t figure out which one to install. So if you could throw in a link to the zip it would be great.
Thanks guys!
The links are in each ROM's thread.
And always it is easier to ask other than read which one is for you - but everything is there in each ROM's thread.
I am asking due to the fact that there are several Inser Coin roms and I just wanted to know which one was the fastest. If you don’t like to help me with this than its ok, I am not forcing you to reply.
Besides I am have only tried 2 roms until now and is therefore rather new to this. So any help choosing a fast sense rom and providing a link for this is welcome.
I actually tried the [ROM][28/08][STABLE][Sense2.1+3.0 GB]InsertCoin CM7 HBOOT/STOCK 1.1.2 but couldn’t get it to work. When I tried to install (using alpharev) from sd after full wipe factory reste, cache wipe and dalvik it told me it was unable to install. I am S-Off and on CM7 HBOOT.

Did you meet all the requirements with SD partitions and download the CM7 hboot version of the rom?
I have a 1 GB 4 ext partition on my SD. But I actually had some problems finding the file. I could only seem to find one file when I visited the mirror???
Its this link:
http://www.multiupload.com/O1LPYKVHIG
From this page:
http://insertcoinrom.blogspot.com/search/label/stable
The one that says CM7 in the title. The other wont fit.
I still get this
E:Can't open /sdcard/InsertCoin_GB_Sense2.1_CM7_1.1.2.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted
What to do???

May be a problem with the mirror / source then. May need to contact the dev...
When adding the file from your PC to your phone are you doing it with it on or in recovery? Whenever I tried to add a rom to my SD while in recovery it never worked.

This is corrupting before even getting to the phone. Winrar on PC shows it is corrupt.
Yeah I think I will contact dev after trying the last couple of mirrors...
Thanks for the help though! Will return when I the dev gets back. Which rom are you guys running on your desire?

rootSU: Cool
I just spend the night downloading the instert coin again, and now it worked!!! And to top this I must say it is a very fast and nice piece of rom!
Don't know what happend with the broken files or anything, but now it seems to work... The only thing i find odd is that the rom is really fast, but I still only have something like 20 mb free on the internal storrage after installing a few apps? On acesmod 007 I had a lot more? Is this something to do with Data++ (what is this)?
data++ is an alternative hboot from alpharev that if you fastoot flash the data++ table, it changes your internal partition layout to be heavily in favour of the /data partition.

[ROM] Stock rooted 6.3

In keeping with my tradition of providing stock rooted ROMs, I've re-packaged the new 6.3 update. As with my past ones, this is completely stock except for modifications that provide root access. It does not attempt to block OTAs in any way, and it does not contain any extras like the Market.
This is a full ROM, not an incremental update, so it will wipe your /system partition when installing. If you're coming from a non-stock ROM you'll want to wipe data/cache, but if you're coming from a previous stock ROM you should be okay. This is tested in CWM (it's what I have onhand right now) but TWRP should also work.
Changes between this and a completely stock 6.3 ROM are:
REMOVED FROM ROM
The new /system/bin/check_rooted binary
Stock recovery image
Stock bootloader image
That goofy userdata-backup.zip
ADDED TO THE ROM
Superuser
su
busybox
CHANGES
Removed the entry from init.omap4430.rc that ran check_rooted at boot.
Set ro.secure=0 so adbd runs as root (insecure boot version only)
updater-script doesn't attempt to install recovery, bootloader, or userdata-backup.zip file since they are not in the ROM.
updater-script won't check your /system partition's size before installing. This means it will install on a /system partition that's been resized, but I have not tested this. My assumption is that if you resized /system you'll know how to handle any errors that you may encounter.
I'm providing secure and insecure boot images, as with my past versions. For those unfamiliar, insecure means adbd runs as root on your Fire so you get a root shell when you use adb to connect (i.e. you get # by default). Secure gives you a user shell (the $) by default, but you can still use 'su' to elevate to root.

I would say probably yes since it's mostly stock, but I've never tried so I can't say for certain. Worst case should be that you bootloop, at which point you can always go back into recovery and wipe data, too.
Perhaps the dumb question, shall I just download and flash it by TWRP like other CM Roms? Please excuse I am noob. Thank you

I've had CWM (and TWRP, actually) refuse to mount my cache partition in the past, and rebooting generally fixed it for me. Not sure if that's what's happening to you, though.

I recently repartitioned my KF following the guide you posted using the GNU parted method. What I did was increased my media storage and shrunk my cache partition to 350MB and userdata partition to 700MB, would those settings affect CWM in anyway? The other thing I noticed was after I get the error, I reboot and check the CWM folder to see if anything did save, and it looks like it doesn't compress the back up while saving it. I found a partial back up of 2.35GB after the error. This is a strange one
Update: okay figured it out. The problem was CWM was trying to back up the /sd-ext volume. I unchecked it in the advanced back up option and ran the back up without a hitch.

Can anyone confirm that the browser did not update to the newest version?
To access reading view, I was told "At the bottom of the display there is an eyeglass Icon tap it the screen says loading and you will have the view. Back arrow out of it."
I don't see an eyeglass icon on this rom.

It works for me, but only on certain web pages (I'm guessing ones that are text-heavy). Try viewing some random Wikipedia article, for example. The icon also doesn't appear until about a second or so after the page has completely finished loading.
Just bizarre, I am not getting it. I looked at wikepedia articles too. I am using the insecure rom if that makes a difference.
What version should the browser be now?
I have 1.0.13.328_10008910
Gonna go clear data, etc.
Well, heck, that did it. Thanks for that. Interesting feature!
Flashed this succesfully... but i neglected to wipe the system and accidentally flashed the 4.0 gapps package after. Boots fine but i am getting an android.process.acore FC and a Calender session FC. Any suggestions? I came from JC's ICS build and I am thinking of just going back to that.
Update. Nevermind. Just went back to ICS. The Stock Launcher gives me douche chills.
Swype?
Anyone who has Swype working on 6.2.1 or 6.2.2 installed this? If so can you tell me what happened to your Swype and were you able to get it working again?
I'm still on 6.2.1 (updates blocked with Droidwall) and went through so much hassles getting everything working *just* right, I'm trying to decide if the changes in 6.3 are worth potentially having to re-do Swype, market, calendar/contact sync, etc.
Edit: Any hope for an incremental update on this one? I loved the ones for 6.2.1 and 6.2.2.
Edit2: Any issues with market or calendar/contact syncs (for those of us who had set that up)?

I had that same issue when I changed my recovery version. I wen't from standard to touch recovery and that's when I noticed that issue. I mounted and un-mounted my cache partition then wiped all my cache partitions and the issue never came back. But I just change my recovery back to standard again to flash an ICS Rom, and haven't noticed it back though. Maybe it happens when you change to a touch recovery?
Did you just change your recovery by chance?
I did just go from 5.0.2.6 to 5.0.2.7
But it started before I switched. I actually switched to see if it would fix it, I'll have try your suggestion thanks

Hey guys, I hate to bump an old thread, but I'm having the same problem.
I tried flashing a new CWM, which didn't fix it, and I tried what RikkKeith suggested ("I mounted and un-mounted my cache partition then wiped all my cache partitions and the issue never came back.")
I'm not sure what caused this, but here's a list of odd things that have happened and what I've done recently (in chronological order):
music stopped working (not sure if this has anything to do with it)
I attempted to un-install and reinstall Avast anti-theft
attempted to install the aGPS fix
restored from a backup
used ODIN to flash CWM 5.0.2.7 (instead of 5.0.2.6. Happened after this problem started appearing)
The phone is a Koodo T989D running the stock OS.
Thank you VERY much for any help.

Thanks for the suggestions man.
I was hoping to avoid CWM 6.x for a little bit as I'm essentially operating as tech support for four T989Ds, and I'm trying to keep this stuff as similar as possible between all four.
I'll give them a try and then report back.

edit2: refomat said it was successful ("formatting /cache..." "Done."). Going to attempt to reboot.
edit3: it appears to be working. Thanks
Problem disappeared for me when I switched to TWRP, which I much prefer.

Can you tell how i can reformat my cache partition into ext4 format? i've got the same problem since i installed CWM Touch so i removed it and ut my hone back to stock unrooted and the problem still persists and i cant use flashimage do anything that includes intalling custom recovery imgs with the adb shell and terminal app in android. even with root access i dont have the right permissions. ive tried fixing the permissions but it fails. so plz help, im pretty desperate to try anything to fix my phone.
Nevermind about my cry for help guys, I figured out a solution by going back to stock, flashed twrp, and put CyanogenMod temporarily just to convert an img file to a flashable md5 with the help of terminal emulator for android (been having problems with heimdall lately), etc…
Here's what i did when i said converting…
I opened a linux command line (terminal emulator) on my phone, and ran these commands on the img file.
Code:
cd /mnt/sdcard/download
mv recovery-clockwork-6.0.2.7-hercules.img recovery.img
tar -c recovery.img > recovery.tar
md5sum -t recovery.tar >> recovery.tar
mv recovery.tar recovery.tar.md5
zip recovery.tar.md5 recovery-clockwork-6.0.2.7-hercules.zip
rm recovery.tar.md5
rm recovery.img
exit
Connected my phone to my pc, copied the zip, extracted it, flashed the image using ODIN, and Voilà.
Then i followed the other steps on CyanogenMod's wiki for installing CM10 onto the hercules and everything went perfectly into order.

sense port issues

Tried to use logcat to figure out why rom wasn't booting but adb daemon wasn't starting which led me to believe that the kernel hadn't loaded. So I pulled the recovery log from when I installed the rom zip. It seems that for some reason the install process skips over the kernel for some reason. here is the recovery log and both updater-scripts. I cut out a lot of crap on the recovery where it was extracting apps and stuff so you can see where it skips. I get no errors or anything that I can tell. it just doesnt install the kernel.
Recovery Log
updater-script sense port
updater-script base s3
any advice?
EDIT finally got the kernel to install. I was told that all you needed to do to get it to at least boot was copy the bootclasspath from the sense kernel to the base kernel and it would (should) boot up enough for me to run logcat and figure out where to go from there. However ive swapped out the bootclasspath and left it stock. ive even left the kernel completely stock (base cm9 kernel) or installed the pure sense kernel (sense port is evo 4g lte stock rom) and I get the EXACT same boot loop. it makes it to the second boot logo (Samsung Galaxy S III) then right before the boot animation it boot loops. Ive compared all the .rc's in the ramdisk and all are the same save for the init.rc. i tried merging the base init.rc and the sense init.rc and nothing appears to change. when i install cm9 with the same base kernel i used in the port it installs fine no issues. this is driving me bananas! i cant imagine what could be present in both separate kernels that is preventing it from booting.
I even took a guess that it wasnt the kernel and tried swapping .so files and .ko's but same thing. idk what else to do. there are sense ports for the S3 i9300 and Xperia Neo that are booting, not completely functional but booting up. ive studied the kernel of both and nothing that I can tell is different besides the obvious differences in mount points and such. what all can prevent a rom from making to the boot animation (at that point i can run logcat)? is there a list? lol
I dont have a logcat for obvious reasons and recovery.log shows no errors or anything out of the ordinary. it HAS to be something with the ROM itself. maybe a file(s) im missing or something?

Ah see that's the trick lol this is a sense port to the S3 from the Evo 4G LTE. I can't get the darn thing booted to troubleshoot because the kernel never gets installed. I only make it to the second samsung boot logo then boot loop.

Will only run Hensemod ??

I have a wildfire s and run the m1hnd4x8r rom and have NO issues and 500mb memory
Trying to get wife's same, but having probs.
Only difference is hers is a 2012 model, but its unlocked, S off, and perm rooted.
It wont load the same rom as mine, stops on HTC screen and wont boot further despite how long left.
It wont run WC2.0, or any other rom I seem to try, but will restore (CWM) easily to hensemod 7 and has no issues with that rom.
Ive spent hours on it reflashing stuff...
Anyone tell me why it wont run these other roms please??

Any pointers??

driving me nuts.
