The light sensor on my evo 4g is very vague when I'm in a totally dark room brightness is at the top and when I go out the brightness increases. Any solution for this problem that does not involve third-party applications?
you can always deactivate auto brightness, and control it manually from settings.

iknow that but i want auto brightness to work
I know its a 3rd party app but use Chainfire3d for this and toggle night mode..all sorts of colors too. Also if you dont like Chainfire3d, Widgetsoid also has a way to manually control settings and then lock 'em in. Example - 10/30/40, 20/40/60 etc. Just throwing it out there in case others may want to use 3rd party apps and have same question.

Hello,
Is there an app similiar to lumos for windows mobile on android. Lumos is a custom brightness setting app which uses the light sensor. Lets say it is dark or I turn the lights off. I can set a custom brightness level such as 1 percent battery backlight. I really hate the default setting for auto brightness and was just wondering if there was an app similiar to lumos that uses the light sensor. I already know there are widgets that u can press but is there a way to make it usr the sensor so it can do this automatically? thanks
There was a bounty thread a while back on this. We just ended up setting up Tasker to do it. It works really well, and tasker is a great app to play with.
Also, CM6 has the ability to adjust auto brightness setting built in
Hey... I think this thing makes phone calls too!
I know this has probably been mentioned 1000 times but why doesn't anyone make an app that will let you manually turn the soft key lights on or off on a non-rooted dinc.
So many clock apps, etc have the option of forcing the softkey lights off, prove that it could be easily done since those apps are available for non-rooted dincs.
If anyone has a solution (other than the black e-tape one) please let me know. You can't see the buttons worth a crap unless the room is very well lit. in other words useless at night in the house with normal lighting. Yes I know I could cover the sensor with my thumb but there has to be a solution lurking out there somewhere.
thanks in advance.... johncal
There is. It's called Screen Filter. You can use it to do really low brightness (like when you use your phone in bed, not what she said ) and also manually turn softkey lights on or off. Actually, I'm not sure about forcing on, but it does turn off softkey lights for as long as you want.
Seriously, why do you want to turn them off? I sorta memorized the position of the softkeys.
I find the softkeys way too bright, so I've always used apps to turn them off in the past, never on.
In addition to trying Screen Filter as recommended above, give LEDs Hack a try. It's primarily designed to turn them off, but maybe the "ON" button will work... I'm really not sure.
For what it's worth, CM7 lets you control the softkeys. Specifically, if you go into the auto-brightness levels, you can turn them on/off for a given brightness level. From my experience, it seems that these settings stick even when you're not using auto-brightness. I turned off soft-keys at all the levels, and they stay off even when I'm not in auto-brightness.
With CM7, I no longer have to use Screen Filter for turning off the softkeys, but I do still use it to dim the screen very low.
I really want to keep the softkeys on not off. I'm also running a stock non-rooted rom. Phone's fine for me the way it is except that I just want the ability to keep the softkey lights on. I guess I'm just surprised that no one has come up with a solution for that.
Screen filter is for turning them off and unfortunately, LED hack is for rooted phones. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Where are the softkey settings in CM7? I looked under the autobrightness settings place but couldn't find anything.
Nightly 37 btw.

Menu > Settings > CM Settings > Display > Automatic Backlight > Edit other levels
Lower / Upper = readings from the light sensor
Screen = the screen brightness you want based on the lower/upper light sensor values
Buttons = whether or not you want the softkeys on. Unfortunately, they cannot be dimmed (hardware limitations, from what I've read), so 255=on and 0=off
In the default configuration, for example, if the sensor value is 0-199, the screen will be set to brightness 25 and the softkeys will be turned on. If the sensor value is >399, notice that the softkeys turn off (button value changes to 0). If you want the buttons on all the time, set all button values as 255. If you're like me, and you hate the softkey lights, set all button values to 0.

Byrong, youre the man. Did not know about this. Bye bye softkey lights. Thanks!
My tablet when on auto brightness becomes very dark in unlit rooms and I can barely see it videos or detail.

I am not sure if this works with stock roms, but if you install PhilZ touch recovery from the thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2367151
You have options in the advanced menu to change the response time for auto brightness. The default is 1 minute, you will need to tap about 4 times to get it down to 0, as it counts up to 5.
Which sped up the delay from going from one extreme to the other in ambient lighting.
If you install his custom roms you also get options to adjust the brightness intensity in 5 steps while auto brightness is on. I found this out after some time messing with my settings.

Lux Auto Brightness - perfect app for brightness tuning - you can set you own profile - matching desired screen brightness to sensor reading, and the process is very easy.
Short info, taken from app description:
Lux isn't your ordinary brightness app. It intelligently adjusts the brightness of your display based on the environment you're in. If, for example, you step into a dimly lit room, Lux will automatically lower the brightness of your display to make it not only comfortable to read, but to also preserve battery power.
Lux provides the option to automatically adjust the backlight at fixed intervals (periodic mode), when a change in environment is detected (dynamic mode), or when the phone wakes from sleep. It's also possible to adjust the backlight manually. Simply disable automatic mode and you can use it like a traditional brightness tool!
Perhaps the best thing about Lux is that you can teach it how to behave. If the backlight is too bright or dim for your liking, simply open the provided Dashboard, adjust the brightness slider to the level you desire, then hold the link button. Lux will use this new 'link' as a reference in future.
lux and velis both work. i paid for both, but i prefer lux.
Do you use the auto screen dimming feature? If mine is working it doesn't seem to be very "aggressive" for lack of a better description...I find myself manually changing the screen brightness more often than not.

Seems like the polling interval is lengthy, I noticed as well compared to CF Lumen I've used before. But I'm aware a shorter poll interval uses more battery, it's a trade-off I guess. I think it works as designed, you can install an app with a shorter polling interval but you might take a hit on battery.
I recommend giving Lux Auto Brightness a try, it's a paid app but there is a lite version available for download.
I use it mainly for the night mode feature since I sit in front of a desk all day.
Only annoying part about it is since its an app that gets detected for drawing over other apps, I have to constantly disable Lux in order to allow permissions.
right, I will look into it for some third party apps. It just seems to not be as responsive or offer as wide a range of dimming capability as my droid ultra did.

I am Annoyed also. Status Bar pro has the same bug. Is it a bug or what? Why are we about to take N and this persists?
Im not sure if these watches have auto brightness but im assuming they dont as there is nothing for that in the settings.
So what I did is with tasker and autowear i wrote a task that looks at my phone brightness every time the screen turns on and off and adjusts the wathc brightness to the same +15% (as it was a tad dark)
Anyone using a different way of auto adjusting the brightness?
Attached it
So i set some minimum values for watch brightness which is 50
also when i set my watch birghtness same as phone it was a bit dark so i added 10* in the one formula where it says *1.1
you will have to play with it
I created a action so it will run when screen turns on or off
HW2 has auto brightness, test with put it under a lamp

I've tried to do the same but couldn't get it to work because my tasker skills are lacking. Please share your tasker profile and task(s).

Thanks for the task but shouldn't there be a profile to go with it? I'm not sure, but I think if you export the profile instead, the associated tasks get exported with it.
