[Q] *How* does 'improve face lock recognition' work? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Edit: I didn't see a way to delete this thread, and I guess it belongs in the Q&A forum. Sorry.
Hello. First post. I hope I searched adequately.
I have a Galaxy Nexus LTE device, and I have been using the face unlock feature. I have taken approx. 25 pics of my face, in various lighting conditions, both with and without my fedora perched upon my noggin, all in an effort to improve the utility, speed and efficacy of the face unlock feature.
My question: Does anyone know how many photos the device/software is capable of using to improve the efficacy of the face unlock feature? I'll just keep adding more examples of my face if it helps, but if the device and/or software (ICS), are only capable of using 5, or 10, or 15 photos as a 'database' of sorts to improve face unlock, then I don't want to keep wasting time adding new examples of my face.
So, does anyone know how many pics the face unlock feature can reference in its use?
Thanks!

Where did you find this option? I can't see it anywhere on my 4.0.1 Nexus.
This may be interesting, I find Face Recognition much more effective if you set up your "face" in a darker environment

No idea but after taking about 4 in various conditions I found that my gnex recognizes my face in all but the darkest conditions

Edit: How are people still on 4.0.1? Is it because you rooted before the OTA that came out on day 1 of release?

Root has nothing to do with it. Some people have the Samsung builds which, to my knowledge, none has received 4.0.2 yet. Also, they stagger releases so not all phones receive the update at the same time.

I have done this a few times and have gotten it perfect, I love face unlock.
To the other questions, this was one of the "lockscreen improvements" on 4.0.2, 4.0.1 does not have it.

Thanks for clearing this out for me.
And to others, I'm pure yakju, UK. Things just seem to move slower here. Possibly Google wants to skip 4.0.2 and focus on 4.0.3 over here?

I wish someone would figure this out too!!

Yeah I was wondering too. I've taken more then 15 pictures with the improve feature.

Have we gotten a valid response to the ?. I would also like to know if taking mulitpule pictures would actually help or if it only keep the most recent like 5. Thank guys.

Where did you ever here of the last 5? Anytime i have a face unreconized, i take another "improve picture". I hope i am not bumping out my older pictures.
I also heard people using 2 people faces and it still works.
FYI: titanium backup works to restore the photos across roms.

Just asking myself, is this a safe method? It's easy, but safe. I wrote an article where describes that it was very easy to unlock a phone just with a picture of the owner. it's only was a issue about the size of the pic, but with some tryings, phone was unlocked but not by the owner himself

I agree with you that it is not 100% unlockable. But it is only unloackable by someone who knows you. If you lose your phone in a taxi it will not be unlocked. If there are people who you live with or work with and not comfortable with them seeing what is on the phone, then it will not work. I have no issues with my kids trying to break into my phone(they have the code anyway to play games).
I do not have my corporate email on MY phone due to their corporate policy that face recognition is not allowed with their email. (My personal policy says i do not need to read work email on my time)
Where is you article?

It is a Dutch article what I found when I was Googling Face Unlock, it was a kinda review site voor Android phones.
glad my boss hasn't found out 'bout face unlock while I'm using my phone as a work phone (and get paid for it)
Will try to find that article an translate it into englisch with Google chrome (can't be worser then my knowledge of englisch hahahah)

They released an extra measure of security in jelly bean by adding a "blink" option, to validate that it's a person and not a picture. But it's not a completely safe method, and you'll notice the phone requires you to make a pattern or PIN lock before it allows you to add a VPN connection.

Voted. Hopefully Google does have this fixed in the next incremental update. It does feel like it takes a bit too long for the screen to rotate. I understand that they didn't want to have the screen rotating inadvertently, but I think they went just a little too far. It isn't awful but it could definitely use improvement.
It doesn't need fixing as it was deliberately set that way by Google - it's not a bug!
I like the delay as otherwise the phone would be changing orientation all the time as I move!!!

They should let users decide if they want a delay.
I like how people argue about how Android is so awesome cause of it's customization and it's open etc and then when there is a design decision made that people hate, others have to defend Google by saying how good the decision is and nothing needs to be fixed etc... If it's so great and open and customizable then Google should let the user decide if they want a delay or not.
@[email protected]????
There is no issue if you watch YouTube reviews it has been said that this is clearly a transition effect. Every person that has showed the screen rotation has the same effect and supposed "delay"
I think some of you are comparing it to the iPhone transition when rotating. AOKP has a speed up option I lowered mine and its fine.

Wouldn't that be the same as having the user decide to root their phone to make it faster? This topic is pointless, if your really that nit picky about an issue and want more to customize, then flash a rom. Cry me a river, build me a bridge and get over it.

did you do a sassy z-snap in the air after you typed that? because that's what i envisioned, reading it.
Do people realize that this is not a bug? Before 2.1, android had instant rotation but around Froyo, they added 200ms delay to prevent accidental rotation because it happens quite often and it's annoying. You could just look at the source for a moment and realize this. If you want to change this value, just change it back to 0ms or 50ms.
The delayed rotation isn't an issue, but it's pretty buggy and doesn't register often, like the sensor falls asleep and u gotta shake it to wake it back up - then it works fine again (with the proper delay).
I always chuckle when my wife shakes her phone, thinking it will wake up or rotate due to shaking
It's like my Dad when he used to move the Nintendo controller when Mario jumped - couldn't stop laughing!

[APP][WIP] ISeeYou

Hi guys! My name is Mirarchi and i'm an italian software developer that comes from Windows programming. Recently i bought a fantastic Galaxy Nexus and i started a project called "ISeeYou". This program recognizes your face while you seeing the phone keeping on the screen. When you don't look the phone, the screen will go off after a specified timeout. So this is similar to a popular app integrated in the new Galaxy S III.
Developed for device targeting Android SDK rel 9-14 (Android 2.3 and later)
No 3rd party libs. Uses only integrated system libraries(so it SHOULD work on every Android 2.3/4.0 based device).
Detectes the face, not the eyes(for now).
Customizable timeouts and app starts.
Requirements for using the app
Android 2.3 or later.
Front facing camera that detects your face. You can use the integrated Camera app to verify if the camera can detect your face (this app uses the same face detection system)
Known Issues
While using the app you can encounter the "Failed to connect to camera service" error. This is ok because you can't use the camera while the service is scanning your face. You can simply resolve by retrying to open the Camera app.
Cheers!
When the app detects your face, an "eye" icon will appear on the left side of the status bar such as a notification.
Enjoy the app and let me know the results.
Suggestions are also appreciated.
NOTE: UNISTALL ANY PREVIOUS VERSION OF THE APPLICATION OTHERWISE YOU CAN HAVE STRANGE ERRORS!
Edit 20120616: Upped a new version that should be compatible with devices other than the GNex. Now the app doesn't use constantly the camera, but now polls the camera every N seconds where N is a custom parameter. Also you can specify the maximum scan rate that is the maximum time that the camera is occuped by the ISeeYouService. In the next few days i will releasea FREE version with reduced features. Enjoy!!
Edit 20120617: Released the "free" version based on build 20120616. This version hasn't the 5 minutes limit, but there is no possibility to change settings. This will be available in the "PRO" version and i will sell it in the next few days. Stay tuned!
Edit 20120617-2: New version available! Added a persistent notify icon that links directly to the app. Now when the service is running, will show a "closed eye" icon. When the service detects your face, the eye will "blink" for a split second. Now the service runs in foreground mode. This will prevent undesidered closes of the app by the android system and should solve the FC issues. Cheers!!
Edit 20120617-3: Link for PRO version. Enjoy!!
Edit 20120621: v1.2 available for download on google play. Cheers!
Edit 20120630: v1.4 available for download! Added the exception list feature. With this mode you can "Blind" the i seeyouservice for certain applications. The keepOn button will let you to keep the screen on for exceptions apps. Also now you should be able to run the service on 2.3 devices. Enjoy!
Edit 20121021: v1.4.3 available for download! Enjoy and sorry for delay!
I look forward to this. What help do you need to get it out?
Thanks subvertz, for now no help is needed, but your attention is very appreciated! I only need to wait that google activates my developer account for distributing the app on play store.
Why don't you post the app in the xda developers for testing and people can provide you feedback on the same.
This way you will help the community n also gain some beta testers for your app.

Sorry dude, fc was my fault. Upping a version that corrects this bug.
For the "eye" icon it should appear when detects your face.
Firstly try with the default android camera application to find the optimal conditions (distance and lighting) to ensure that the device can recognize your face.
Wouldnt it waste the battery constantly checking for the face?
It would seem better to launch the service when the screen is going to time out, check for the face and if seen reset the timer

You should look up the code for that app and see if you can get some ideas from that, I feel like that would be a better start point than coding from scratch.

was testing it alot and its always showing the last 6. wanted to clear them out once i got it right.

Pictures do not save only shows the placeholder image. After you get this sorted out I have a suggestion for a possible feature. Automatic upload to drop box or to have the picture sent to a specified email. It would be great as a backup if the device was stolen. As we know the Nexus 7 does not have cell service so tracking it when lost would be difficult. That being said most thieves are going to try to unlock it once while still in a hotspot. This would make a great chance to capture their picture.

The one feature I am waiting for is to compile my own list of canned answers, in the order that I want. And how about keyboard support (just release an API and let developers build keyboards) instead of the stupid OK Google feature which I never use and is not nearly as reliable as it should.

Can't wait.
I read somewhere that was coming in the next few days, not sure if that was true.
They would tell us right?
Seems to be coming in December. .

THIS.
Been so long I almost forgot about it.
Although with the last update, they did make the notification pictures for group hangouts bigger, but not higher quality.
Dumb question, but does my phone need to be upgraded to Android 5.0 for the watch to be upgraded? Not that there is an update for my Note 4, but I may have to hold out because of one specific application I use regularly that I don't suspect will update right away for Lollipop.
I'd update for the battery life.

This is not a problem with the Moto 360, rather with Google in general and the way they treat contacts. Google apps default to a 96x96 photo. On your phone you can set a specific photo per contact up to 720x720 (assuming you have Android 4.1+) but that doesn't fix the underlying issue, and the contact photos don't persist to gmail or from Google+. This is a really annoying situation to me, as I like to set everyone's contact photo myself, and then Google overrides it with a 96x96 of the person's Google+ photo if that exists. I don't want the person's Google+ photo, much less a 96x96 of it.

Looks like a comment in that Google+ thread linked says OTAs start either tomorrow or next Wednesday. Sweet!

Yeah but his watch is the LG G watch...so I don't know if it will be the same for all watches.

its like any stock android device . all get the updates in the same time frame . not like OEM updates .
I'm running 5.0 on my s4
And I can already access the new features mentioned in the article. Being able to hide the top notification is actually really awesome, without disabling notifications on my watch I can see the entire watch-face. Very cool. The only thing that really bothers me now is that the words "ok google" are on the screen whenever I wake my 360 up for about 3-5 seconds. It's pretty intrusive and doesn't look good on a lot of my watchfaces. I'll post photos if anyone is interested.
I believe you are looking at the update they did a week or two ago, 4.4w.2, where the enabled being able to swipe down the bottom notification without dismissing it. I think the 'ok google' thing will go away, maybe with use I'm not sure, but mine isn't doing it at this moment and it was shortly after this last update.
